Welcome Welcome to Make it British Live! in our new home at the Business Design Centre.

When I first launched this trade show in 2014 its aim was two-fold - to help solve the problem of finding UK factories, and to rebuild the network that any good supply chain needs if it is to thrive. Five shows later and it is great to see that so many UK manufacturers, particularly the garment makers, are busier than they have ever been!

Making in the UK is now more important than ever, as the sustainability of local supply chains is increasingly favoured over offshore production. Whilst increased interest in making in the UK has brought with it its own set of problems, such as skills shortages and capacity issues, not helped by the uncertainty surrounding the UK’s exit of the EU, this event demonstrates that the industry has enough resilience to overcome these challenges, and continue to thrive.

Technology will play an increasingly important part in UK manufacturing in the years to come, which is why we have chosen to focus on it as a key part of many of the talks that will be taking place over the next couple of days.

Our seminar programme is here to educate and inspire you with the lessons learnt by others; celebrating their successes and debating how we can improve even further. Equipping you with a practical plan that will allow us all to move forward as a combined force to rebuild manufacturing in the UK again.

@TheAllinOneCo Kate Dawson’s career evolved from being a nursey nurse to setting up her own nanny agency and then working with her parents creating interior décor schemes for national breweries.

She founded the All-in-One Company in Northumberland in 2008 through the need to keep her daughter warm at night. Since then, she has built up a factory from scratch with a team of cutters, machinists, inspectors and embroidery technicians.

She attended London School of Fashion bra-making courses and made it her mission to turn her lingerie social enterprise idea into reality.

@PhoebeEnglish Phoebe English is an artist and designer who founded the Phoebe English womens’ and menswear label in 2011.

The brand is entirely made in England and pieces are created with close attention to detail and quality, rejecting mass-made or ‘fast’ fashion.

She consistently shows at London Fashion Week, has a dedicated global following and actively pursues change in legislation to improve sustainability within the UK fashion industry.

@julia_redman67 Julia Redman’s background has always been in retail, starting at BHS 30 years’ ago, then working for the likes of Arcadia and M&S, including time spent teaching at the Fashion Retail Academy. She joined M&Co in 2010 where the main focus of her role is to bring the most exciting products to customers at prices that are affordable.

She’s passionate about fashion and still gets a kick out of being involved in the creation of a best-selling style!

Mark Randle has been in IT for 35 years and spent the last 5 producing the Galaxius solution focused on getting traceability back into the garment industry. Back in 2004, his step mum owned a large garment manufacturer and Mark was called in to provide an IT solution. This sparked the idea for Galaxius. In 2014, Galaxius was at Fashion Enter. It proved such a success that Mark is now taking Galaxius to the rest of the industry.

Stephen Russell is Professor of Textile Materials and Technology in the School of Design at the University of Leeds. His main areas of expertise are in textile engineering, textile design and manufacture. In addition to academic research, he has nearly 15 years product development and company director experience in the textile industry.

@GievesLondon Nick Keyte joined Savile Row’s Gieves & Hawkes as Managing Director in October 2016. He sits on the All Party Parliamentary Group for International Trade & Investment as well as the Walpole mentorship programme’s panel for high end consumer goods.

He is a Walpole mentor at the London Business School. Prior to joining Gieves & Hawkes he was at the John Lewis Partnership as Head of Buying, Menswear and Travel.

@hebtroco For the 7 years before HebTroCo, Ed Oxley worked in the outdoor industry running his own mountain bike skills and guiding business. His working life started out in community arts, leading drama, video and music projects, mostly with groups of young people. He worked as a massage therapist for 10 years. All his jobs have had the common thread of working with people and trying to make them happy. Menswear was the obvious next step.

@hebtroco Brant Richards’ manufacturing experience started with him sewing trousers for his teddy bear. He went on to design bike frames for himself and thousands of others. He’s also a former national magazine and website editor.

He’s now applying everything he’s learnt, with consumer-direct business models, manufacturing efficiency and 40+ years of wearing clothes, to bring production quantities back to the local area.

HebTroCo was launched in January 2016.

Joining Burberry united his passion for textiles with a love for innovation and technology in the textiles industry, especially around weaving. And he’s still loving (almost) every minute of it!.

@DianaKakkar Diana Kakkar is the founder of MAES London, a premium garment manufacturer specialising in high-end womenswear. With over a decade’s industry experience, she launched MAES London to help fashion designers make beautiful garments exactly to spec and in the most costeffective way. Previously she had run the atelier for a luxury LFW designer, which caters to members of the royal family and A-list celebrities.

As Kalopsia’s Director, Adam uses his knowledge of dataled designs to develop efficient manufacturing solutions to create a more lean service.

David Williams has been in the knitting industry since 1994, following on from his father who started in 1970. He launched Stoll GB in 2008 and went on to open the Knit Design Centre in 2013.

Small batch production commenced 2015. He is passionate about the knitting industry and its future. He transfers his knowledge to designers and is in contact with every knitting company in the UK.
