CHAMBER PRESIDENT WELCOME

This past year has been — say it with me — “unprecedented” in so many ways. There is likely not a single household in our community that has not experienced the e ect of the COVID-19 pandemic in ways too numerous to list. This extends to our business community as well. Finding new ways to do business and serve our customers was, for all of us, a constant and existential challenge. Sadly, a number of treasured friends, beloved businesses, have left our streets, taking with them some of the color and dimension of our small corner of the world.

I am writing this in the depths of winter — both literally and fi guratively. We just had a fresh snowfall, and in so many ways spring seems a long way o . However, that same fresh snowfall reminds me that each day and each season brings the promise of a clean slate for all of us. A number of new businesses are or will soon be joining our community, planning for the Farmers’ Market is in full swing, which certainly means warmer weather isn’t that far o , after all, and the Winnetka Music Festival is scheduled for a return in September.

During the past year, your Winnetka-Northfi eld Chamber of Commerce has been hard at work. We have been able to continue many of our programs and networking opportunities in Zoom-land, as well as hosting the wonderfully successful Farmers’ Market and Open Air Holiday Market. We look forward to being able to once again celebrate members of our community at our Recognition Lunch later this year. Our dedicated sta has worked tirelessly (and generally remotely) over the past months to keep the business community top-of-mind, including providing critical assistance to businesses navigating PPP loans and ensuring as many as wished to do so were able to participate in the sales tax rebate program o ered by the Village of Winnetka. I know I can speak for all of us when I extend my gratitude to the Village leadership for their partnership with the business community during this past year.

While we await our emergence from the long, enforced hibernation of the past year, I will close by o ering a paraphrasing of three pieces of advice (to which I have added a fourth) originally taught to me by Rabbi Lisa Greene: 1) take a long walk (or bike ride), 2) read a good book, 3) make a new friend (socially distanced, of course), and 4) shop small. Or, perhaps in the words of the “Most Interesting Person in the World”: “I don’t often leave my house. But when I do, I shop local.”

Sincerely,

Pam Faulkner

WINNETKA-NORTHFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Iam often asked, “What is a chamber of commerce? What do they do?” Interestingly, the fi rst chamber of commerce came about in 1599 in Marseille, France. Its purpose was to gather merchants, industrialists, traders and craftsmen in order to discuss and tackle community challenges. The chamber of commerce was a place of unity, even among competitors.

The fi rst one in the United States started in New York in 1768. The United States Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1912 and promotes pro-business issues via lobbying e orts at the national level. At the state, city, regional and local levels, chambers focus on issues and advocacy relevant to their individual membership.

Currently, there are about 13,000 chambers registered in the o cial Worldchambers Network registry.

Chamber of Commerce organizations are not out-of-the-box, cookie-cutter setups. Every chamber is unique, with di erent benefi ts, resources and opportunities.

However, their end goal is the same: to serve as an infl uential voice and power that stands for the well-being of the local business environment. This includes helping to promote local businesses and improve their growth.

Local chambers tackle both issues and trends taking place in their community as well as o er resources and services to help local businesses succeed. It isn’t just a goodwill e ort, but an e ective strategy.

A Chamber of Commerce is an organization made up of local businesspeople to network and promote the interests of the business community. While most chambers work closely with government, they are not part of government, although many consider the process of appropriately infl uencing elected/ appointed o cials to be one of their most important functions.

Here are some great opportunities provided by a local Chamber of Commerce: • Make business contacts • Receive chamber newsletters • Acquire customer referrals • Bring credibility to your business • Increase your visibility in the community • Expand networking opportunities • Gain a voice in government

The Winnetka-Northfi eld Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization dedicated to supporting our Village’s business community and its diverse landscape of organizations. As we move toward our 100th year, we continue to grow our membership and to welcome new businesses into our communities.

The Winnetka Chamber is one of the oldest North Shore Chambers of Commerce. Incorporated in 1923, we have served our Village community of businesses and organizations for nearly a century. Our history gives us a proven track record and legacy of helping our members.

The Winnetka Chamber of Commerce joined with the Northfield Chamber of Commerce in October 2011 to provide a more robust community of businesses that fulfill the needs of both villages.

Our mission is “supporting and encouraging the development and success of local businesses for the benefit of our vibrant communities.” Our tag line is “thriving businesses, vibrant communities.”

Our diverse membership includes small businesses, large institutions, home-based entrepreneurs and established nonprofit organizations — no matter the size and type, the chamber is in sync with its members, every step of the way.

If you are interested in being a part of our local Chamber of Commerce, to grow your professional network and help the community, consider attending one of our networking events. Growing your relationship with our chamber can build lifelong friendships in addition to business opportunities. We look forward to hearing from you.
