WE’RE PROUD TO SUPPORT THE

WINNETKA-NORTHFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

What do we love the most about this community? The people we share it with! That’s why we support the families here, the local businesses, and the charitable organizations, too. Instead of just providing banking solutions, we also take pride in giving back to the people who work to make this area so great. Why? Because this isn’t just home to us; it’s home to all of us. And, as a true community bank, we know that when we all do our part, we can help make the North Shore the best it can be.

CHAMBER PRESIDENT

WELCOME T

his past year has been — say it with me — “unprecedented” in so many ways. There is likely not a single household in our community that has not experienced the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in ways too numerous to list. This extends to our business community as well. Finding new ways to do business and serve our customers was, for all of us, a constant and existential challenge. Sadly, a number of treasured friends, beloved businesses, have left our streets, taking with them some of the color and dimension of our small corner of the world. I am writing this in the depths of winter — both literally and figuratively. We just had a fresh snowfall, and in so many ways spring seems a long way off. However, that same fresh snowfall reminds me that each day and each season brings the promise of a clean slate for all of us. A number of new businesses are or will soon be joining our community, planning for the Farmers’ Market is in full swing, which certainly means warmer weather isn’t that far off, after all, and the Winnetka Music Festival is scheduled for a return in September. During the past year, your Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce has been hard at work. We have been able to continue many of our programs and networking opportunities in Zoom-land, as well as hosting the wonderfully successful Farmers’ Market and Open Air Holiday Market. We look forward to being able to once again celebrate members of our community at our Recognition Lunch later this year. Our dedicated staff has worked tirelessly (and generally remotely) over the past months to keep the business community top-of-mind, including providing critical assistance to businesses navigating PPP loans and ensuring as many as wished to do so were able to participate in the sales tax rebate program offered by the Village of Winnetka. I know I can speak for all of us when I extend my gratitude to the Village leadership for their partnership with the business community during this past year. While we await our emergence from the long, enforced hibernation of the past year, I will close by offering a paraphrasing of three pieces of advice (to which I have added a fourth) originally taught to me by Rabbi Lisa Greene: 1) take a long walk (or bike ride), 2) read a good book, 3) make a new friend (socially distanced, of course), and 4) shop small. Or, perhaps in the words of the “Most Interesting Person in the World”: “I don’t often leave my house. But when I do, I shop local.” Sincerely,

Pam Faulkner Pam Faulkner, President Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce

WINNETKA-NORTHFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE I cookie-cutter setups. Every chamber is unique, with different benefits, resources and opportunities.

am often asked, “What is a chamber of commerce? What do they do?”

Interestingly, the first chamber of commerce came about in 1599 in Marseille, France. Its purpose was to gather merchants, industrialists, traders and craftsmen in order to discuss and tackle community challenges. The chamber of commerce was a place of unity, even among competitors.

The first one in the United States started in New York in 1768. The United States Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1912 and promotes pro-business issues via lobbying efforts at the national level. At the state, city, regional and local levels, chambers focus on issues and advocacy relevant to their individual membership. Currently, there are about 13,000 chambers registered in the official Worldchambers Network registry. Chamber of Commerce organizations are not out-of-the-box,

However, their end goal is the same: to serve as an influential voice and power that stands for the well-being of the local business environment. This includes helping to promote local businesses and improve their growth.

Local chambers tackle both issues and trends taking place in their community as well as offer resources and services to help local businesses succeed. It isn’t just a goodwill effort, but an effective strategy. A Chamber of Commerce is an organization made up of local businesspeople to network and promote the interests of the business community. While most chambers work closely with government, they are not part of government, although many consider the process of appropriately influencing elected/ appointed officials to be one of their most important functions. Here are some great opportunities provided by a local Chamber of Commerce: • Make business contacts • Receive chamber newsletters • Acquire customer referrals • Bring credibility to your business • Increase your visibility in the community • Expand networking opportunities • Gain a voice in government The Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization dedicated to supporting our Village’s business community and its diverse landscape of organizations. As we move toward our 100th year, we continue to grow our membership and to welcome new businesses into our communities.

ew breakwaters, a boardwalk and other upgrades are complete, and Winnetka’s Lloyd Beach will be ready for boaters this summer.

One of five beaches in the Winnetka Park District, Lloyd Beach has undergone a major facelift this past year. The breakwaters have helped bring back the beach and boat launch. “Now that we’ve installed the breakwater, there’s a huge beach,” said Kelsey Raftery, marketing brand manager for the Winnetka Park District. “It’s spectacular.” The district spent $5.5 million on improvements at Lloyd Beach and at the Tower Road Beach in 2020. Ongoing improvements to the beaches this year are expected to cost $9 million. Lloyd Beach, which is only open to boaters, will open Memorial Day weekend. The changing lake levels and crushing Lake Michigan waves left Lloyd Beach under water for most of the 2019 season, Raftery said. “There wasn’t any beach left,” she said. “The beach essentially was unusable.” Though the park district is making improvements at each of its beaches, Lloyd Beach quickly became a top priority, Raftery said. “It was getting damaged so quickly, and we were losing so much beach that it took precedence,” she said. The new breakwaters, made of boulders and designed to hold for 100 years or more, hold back the lake’s waves and stabilize the beach. The breakwaters also help capture drifting sand. Now instead of water lapping up to the beach house, the breakwaters have helped create two half-moon beaches. The beach 14

house, once inundated by water, now stands surrounded by sand in between the two beaches. “Now there’s actually a beach,” Raftery said. The breakwaters were initially planned to be installed in two phases in 2020 and 2021. But with the beach closed due to the pandemic, the work was completed by November. Other improvements at Lloyd Beach include a new boardwalk. A new trail leading to the beach will make it easier to launch kayaks and paddle boards. New boat storage racks for small watercraft also are available. On the north side, a new access road for motorized boats leads to the boat launch. Fenced-in storage also is available. The park district’s 2030 Master Plan also outlines improvements to each of the four remaining beaches. Improvements, including breakwaters similar to Lloyd Beach, also are in the works for the Elder Lane and Centennial beaches. Construction for those improvements is expected to begin this year and go into 2022. Unlimited pier launch passes and personal watercraft pier launch passes are $495 for residents and $990 for non-residents. Unlimited beach launch passes are $220 for residents and $440 for non-residents. Daily passes, accepted Monday through Wednesday, also are available. Daily beach launch passes are $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents. Daily pier launch passes are $25 for residents and $50 for non-residents. WE’RE GETTING THE BANDS BACK TOGETHER! The Winnetka Music Festival gears up for year four: take 2 After more than a year of Zoom calls, masks, distanced socializing and canceled weddings, graduations and vacations, and as vaccinations are underway, it’s time to make big plans to get back together. And what better way to celebrate the coming end of our isolation than joining the Winnetka Music Festival. Sept. 10 and 11 will once again see some of the top emerging bands from around the country make their way to Winnetka for what has become one of the most looked-forward-to events on the North Shore. This year’s fest has been moved from the traditional June to September to allow for more time to resolve the pandemic issues. Because of the new date, the bands are just now being booked, and the lineup will be announced in early April. However, the Winnetka Music Festival will still have a similar footprint and vibe, featuring four stages centralized on the east side of Winnetka’s downtown business district. Starting on Friday night, Sept. 10, the fest will kick off with performances on the two main stages. The festival picks up again on Saturday, Sept. 11, on the Village Green at the Family Stage with music and interactive experiences for kids of all ages. Throughout Saturday, some of the top emerging bands will be performing on both outdoor main stages as well as on the historic Winnetka Chapel stage. With more than 20 bands to choose from, the fest offers music for everyone. The bands are selected by Val Haller, a Winnetka resident and founder of Valslist who is known in the industry for having an ear for identifying top emerging talent. “The Winnetka Music

Festival has become one of the most unique and respected music festivals at which bands seek to perform,” Haller said. “Not only is the friendly, intimate fest a welcome environment for them, but the quality of the fest has become recognized in the industry as a highly sought-after place to perform. For fans both in the community and throughout Chicagoland and beyond, it’s a great way to say, ‘I saw them when’ as these bands achieve critical acclaim, including Grammy recognition, and notch appearances on late-night TV and at the most iconic festivals.” While providing an intimate environment to hear some of the best new artists, the fest has also become a much-anticipated social event. With food trucks, beer gardens, street musicians and much more all situated in an easily walkable area, our hometown fest is a place to see and connect with friends. This year more than ever, the event offers a great way to shake off the aftereffects of the past months and celebrate together. The fact that Winnetka would even have its own namesake music festival is perhaps emblematic of our unique community, and so supporting it is one of the ways that we cement our position at the pinnacle as one of the most distinctive places to live. The 2021 festival requires admission tickets for anyone 21 and over. Information about the lineup and tickets can be found on the Winnetka Music Festival website, www.winnetkamusic festival.com. Support the fest by buying tickets early when they are offered, contacting the fest organizers if you would like to be a patron or refer a sponsor, hosting a band or volunteering. We hope to see you there! winnetkanorthf ieldchamber.com B E S T O F 6 0 0 9 3 1 7

NORTHFIELD A CLOSER LOOK

Northfield is the best of both worlds: a thriving, desirable suburb and a village with hometown charm. Incorporated in 1927, the village is located 20 miles from the heart of Chicago’s Loop. With a population of approximately 5,400, Northfield attracts those looking for a small-town way of life with a close proximity to a large city. When the village was incorporated, a commitment was made to protect open spaces. This commitment continues today as the village successfully balances that prized open space with commercial development. Northfield has more than 30 acres of open parkland that includes

BY LIZ DECHANT

ast year was the most challenging year businesses have faced in recent memory: businesses became innovative and flexible in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Village’s support for businesses never wavered. Since the moment Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued the first stay-at-home order in March 2020, Village staff worked tirelessly to help businesses adapt to the evolving demands the pandemic placed upon them. The Village partnered with the Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce to address emerging issues for business owners and put forward creative solutions for common concerns including providing education on marketing strategies, offering advice and guidance to businesses, and identifying and sharing financial aid opportunities offered by state, federal, and private entities. Village trustees acknowledged the financial burden on the small business community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and offered a Local Sales Tax Rebate Economic Relief program to eligible businesses. This program was open from Sept. 1-Dec. 1, 2020, and issued $297,500 to 76 businesses from a portion of the Village’s share of municipal sales tax received in 2019. Restaurants were ordered to cease indoor dining in October 2020, and the Village moved quickly to support them. The Village created a one-time Restaurant Relief Grant in December 2020 and disbursed $100,000 to 29 locally owned restaurants, providing them with immediate cash for shortterm financial operational expenses. In 2021, residents are encouraged to participate in the “Take Out Challenge” as a way to support local restaurants by spending $150 at one or multiple

Winnetka restaurant locations and entering to win prizes and local dining experiences. Residents can now access business promotions sent via text as part of the “Distinctly Winnetka” text loyalty program. Text WINN to 55678 to sign up and be notified about deals, promotions and events at Winnetka businesses. Despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, the Village of Winnetka welcomed 14 new businesses in 2020: 501 Local, Alchemy and Cloth, Bunny & Babe, Casa Spazio, Engel & Völkers, Munder-Skiles, Guanajuato Mexican Restaurant, La Taquiza Mexican Restaurant, Maison du Prince, Sole + Luna Wellness, Spirit Elephant, Towne and Oak, Pedego E-Bikes and Perspective Eyes. Several new businesses are slated to open in 2021. In Hubbard Woods, interior designer Rebel House will open in spring. In East Elm, Delos Therapy, Hometown Coffee and Juice, and Taco and Tequila Cantina are slated to open mid-year. Winnetka is proud of our existing businesses, several of which were honored in Make It Better’s Annual Best of the North Shore reader’s poll in 2020, including Bella Bleu Bridal (Best Bridal Shop), One Magnificent MedSpa (Best Facial), The Grand Food Center (Best Grocery Store), Stacked & Folded (Best Sandwiches), Academic Approach (Best Tutor), Corepower Yoga (Best Yoga), Bedside Manor Ltd. (Best Home Organization Company) and Get Dwell (Best Handyman). Business district revitalization was completed in the West Elm area, featuring widened sidewalks for easier pedestrian access, new brick

crosswalks, streetlights, benches, bicycle racks, bollards, landscaping and trees. Implementation of the Village’s Downtown Master Plan and Downtown Streetscape Master Plan will continue in 2021. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2021 in East Elm along Lincoln Avenue and Elm Street. The Village sponsored several outdoor shopping events hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, which supported local businesses and drew tens of thousands of visitors to the Village. The Winnetka Farmers’ Market was held from June to November in 2020: a record 23 weekends that attracted over 25,000 visitors. The market followed strict health guidelines to ensure the safety of shoppers and vendors. Three outdoor Winnetka “Shop and Stroll” weekends in late summer and early fall 2020 extended business sales outdoors. The Village co-sponsored the annual Red Invitation Sale and the first-ever Open Air Holiday Market in December. The Village is hopeful that 2021 will offer more opportunities for businesses to connect to their customers. Outdoor dining is a priority for the Village, which has expedited the outdoor dining permit process and continues to work with businesses to provide creative solutions to help businesses reach customers despite the pandemic. For the most up-to-date information on Winnetka businesses and events, be sure to subscribe to our monthly E-Developments newsletter, sign up for “Distinctly Winnetka,” and follow the Village of Winnetka on social media. NORTHFIELD BY JANE GOLDENBERG

orthfield may be small in size, but we’ve got tons of small-town charm with just enough big-city sophistication. A bustling crossroads in the center of the North Shore, we boast a bunch of popular restaurants and lovely boutiques that offer a one-of-a-kind shopping experience for everything from cakes to cars. With us, people come first — exemplified by our highly efficient village government, which delivers top-notch services with a smile. The Village recently rolled out a Smart 911 system, which allows emergency responders to track mobile phone callers’ location and thereby improve responsiveness. And after months of community engagement, we will also soon have an up-to-date comprehensive plan to guide village planning for the next two decades. Since incorporation in 1927, Northfield has capitalized on its fantastic location only 20 miles from the Loop and 25 minutes to O’Hare. The perfect place to live and work, longtime residents agree. And so do our businesses, as our consistent near-zero vacancy rate in our Village Center attests. “Location, location, location,” says one local business owner. “Because of that, my business has attracted customers from Winnetka, Glenview, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Glencoe and Highland Park and Northfield, of course.” We’re in the midst of a major new improvement in our Willow Road retail corridor with the addition of a new Northview Bank & Trust branch next to Dunkin’ and the extension of Alice Lane to Northfield Road, which will greatly improve traffic circulation in that important retail center. Unlike most other towns our size, population 5,400, we enjoy not one but two of the highest-ranked school districts in the state, serving kindergarten through 8th grade, Sunset Ridge School District 29 and Avoca School District 37, plus New Trier High School, often mentioned as one of the best high schools in the country. Plus, we have a beautiful, new, energy-efficient Sunset Ridge School, certified LEED Platinum and the other school in the state with a ComEd “Net Zero” rating. We emphasize green planning in our village policies as well. We have a great curbside composting program with Waste Management, and the Village is committed to sustainable stormwater strategies. We prioritize pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as auto safety and have completed Phase II of a study to extend the Skokie Valley Trail through Northfield.

Other new improvements include the reconstruction of Northfield Road, and we’re working with Cook County on Phase II of a new, safer, more walkable Happ Road. Northfield boasts one of the most luxe boutique public fitness centers in the area at the Northfield Community Center — drop in at the corner of Wagner and Willow. All Northfield residents have resident status, and nonresidents are welcome. Northfielders can buy beach passes from Winnetka at resident rates. Our Village is most fortunate to have a wonderful group of engaged organizations, from our churches and synagogues to our social service groups, most famously the North Shore Senior Center, to serve the community. As we like to say, “We’re like the bar in the television show ‘Cheers,’ where everybody knows your name.” While our meaning is metaphorical, Northfield literally has a couple of those bars! When you walk into one of our wonderful restaurants or bars, you’ll likely see a neighbor or friend, and you’ll know you’re home. Article written by Jane Goldenberg for the Village of Northfield.

The presence of the arts in a community makes that community a better place, where students can express themselves in a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Attend classes, admire quality artwork, or attend a special art event—the North Shore Art League has a full calendar that will excite you! The North Shore Art League is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the arts. Founded 96 years ago, the League studios are located on the second floor of the historic Winnetka Community House. NSAL brings exhibits, lectures, workshops, classes and summer art camps to the over 42 communities we serve. Most classes are held in our sky lit studio, reminiscent of Paris art studios so prevalent in the early 19th century—giving artists the coveted North Light for their work. A fully equipped print studio is also an important part of the League space.

all ages from diverse backgrounds and varied financial means. We offer a wide variety of client-focused and goaloriented counseling services in a broad range of specialty areas. Many of our clients pay our standard fee utilizing their health insurance coverage. However, we are committed to providing affordable access to mental health services. Our Mental Health Access Program (“MHAP”) was created, in tandem with our mission, to offer reduced fees, using a sliding fee scale, to qualifying clients who are uninsured, underinsured or who have extenuating financial circumstances, such as a recent separation or divorce, abuse or abandonment issues, high medical debt or the death/major illness of a primary wage earner. Approximately 30-40% of our clients require financial assistance at any given time. We provide $600,000, on average, in fee subsidy assistance per year to qualifying individuals and families. NORTHFIELD PARK DISTRICT 401 Wagner Road Northfield, IL 847-446-4428 northfieldparks.org Director: George Alexoff

Three park districts serve the Village of Northfield. The Northfield Park District boundaries coincide in general with those of Sunset Ridge School District #29 and include much of the unincorporated area north and west of the village. The southeast part of Northfield is the Winnetka Park District, and a small area in the southwest section corresponding to Glenview District #34 is located in the Glenview Park District. However, any resident who lives in Northfield receives resident rates for programs held inside the Community Center. The Northfield Park District includes three parks (Willow Park, Clarkson Park and Fox Meadow) and the Northfield Community Center. Bordered on the east by the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve and Erickson Woods on the south, the village offers miles of scenic parks and recreational areas. NORTHFIELD COMMUNITY CENTER The Community Center is the hub of activities including classes, sports practices, fitness workouts, special events, birthday parties and meetings. The facility includes a full-sized gymnasium, fitness center, fitness studio, Residents Center (multi-purpose room) and the Community Conference

A Northfield park

room. The Residents Center is available for meetings or children’s birthday parties and has an ADA-compliant kitchen space attached. The Community Conference room has a 70-inch flatscreen TV, full AV capability, access to a kitchenette and is also available to rent. FITNESS CENTER The convenient, bright, ADA-compliant Fitness Center offers a comfortable space with state-of-the-art equipment throughout, dedicated areas for cardio, weights and stretching, video classes, personal training, and member-only restrooms and showers. Enjoy your workouts even more with the floor-toceiling wall of windows that wrap around the Fitness Center, bringing in natural light and wonderful views of Willow Park. A variety of classes are available in the fitness studio.

WILLOW PARK Northfield’s largest complex consists of four lighted ballfields, two lighted soccer fields, two tennis courts and six pickleball courts. There’s also a ½-mile pathway with fitness stations and picnic shelters that can accommodate up to 75 people. CLARKSON PARK Clarkson Park has been the heart of Northfield since it was established more than 60 years ago. The newly renovated park features a new playground, splash pad, pavilion, and a bandshell. Clarkson Lodge can be rented and is the ideal setting for celebrations, meetings and corporate outings. In winter, the area in front of Clarkson Lodge is turned into a seasonal outdoor ice rink which is typically open from December through February, weather permitting. Many of the Park District’s special events such as Market & Music and State Fair/Ribfest are held at Clarkson Park.

NSSRA The North Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA), a partnership of 10 park districts and two cities, connects recreation, leisure skills and sports to Northfield residents with a

Owner Tony Duncan has introduced hospital-grade air disinfectant at Body Science PFT.

ON THE RIGHT TRACK Fitness centers persevere through the pandemic

Kenilworth in late 2019. Within three months, the business closed due to the statewide stay-at-home order.

BY ERIN YARNALL

It was a similar story for Wilmette’s YogaSix location, a studio that opened in late 2019, shortly before having to shut down the studio space and pivot to virtual classes.

F

itness centers were hit especially hard by the pandemic, but thanks to perseverance and intense disinfection methods, some workout sites are bringing back clients and returning to normalcy. Temperature checks, class size limits, hospital-grade disinfectants and viruskilling UVC light are some of the tools in place to allow customers to resume their workout routines. And business owners have evolved to meet the needs of customers as the rules about workouts have changed. “Our cleanup people are working every day,” said Tony Duncan, owner of Body Science PFT in Kenilworth. Duncan had the unfortunate timing of relocating his gym and physical training center after 15 years in Wilmette to

60

BEST OF 60093

060_WNCC_2021_Workouts.indd 60

“It’s been particularly hard because a new business has a runway toward success,” said Suzanne Rossi, who operates YogaSix in Wilmette. “That got completely short, which has been an incredible challenge.” YogaSix shifted to Zoom yoga, then outdoor classes. When it finally reopened the studio space, class sizes were capped at 10 people, and Rossi said the classes were even smaller because she had measured the space to create a 6-foot distance between each mat, and then added some more space from there. Duncan said he went from 2,000 clients a month to zero, and it’s been a process to give customers the confidence to return to in-person training. “Client

confidence was so low,” Duncan said. Body Science PFT uses an “abundance of social distancing,” Duncan said, and staff does temperature checks on those attending workouts and classes and has handsanitizing stations throughout the facility. “We have these things called atomizers,” Duncan said. “They’re hospital-grade, antiviral, antifungal disinfectant. It’s not just a spray; it actually atomizes so it’s in the air. We fumigate everything with that.”

BodyScience_WNCC_032

At YogaSix, the air-circulation system is “full of UVC light,” which is effective against killing viruses and bacteria, Rossi said. She said the studio switched to a hospital-grade disinfectant, and staff cleans the floor after every class. Despite the early setbacks, Rossi has confidence in her studio and the business in general. She’s working on opening a second location, she said.
