How Do You Make Fried Ice Cream? Fried ice cream is typically thought of as a “Mexican treat.” However, it was not actually created in the country of Mexico; fried ice cream has a “Tex-Mex” foundation. There are also variations of fried ice cream that reflect Asian culture and cuisine. The difference between the Tex-Mex style of fried ice cream and the Asian fried ice cream is essentially the batter. The Asian version calls for a tempura butter batter, and the Tex-Mex version uses corn flakes, nuts, or cookie crumbs as the outer coating. To be able to make this somewhat exotic treat is not only impressive at a party but also delicious! It’s a neat snack that you can almost guarantee nobody else will be bringing, so you won’t need to worry about anyone else having the same idea. The best part is that if you are planning to make fried ice cream on your own, it is easy to do and has very simple steps to follow. First, you want to start with ice cream that is much colder than the normal storing temperature of ice cream. This way, the ice cream will not start melting as soon as heat touches it. If it is cold enough, it will begin thawing before it begins melting, which is what you want. As your ice cream is being stored at a sub-normal temperature, you want to make sure it has a nice egg coating with corn flakes sticking to it. If you are going to try the Asian version, just substitute the raw egg and corn flake coating with tempura butter and crumbs. If you do decide to soak your ice cream in raw egg, please be aware that it may not be fully cooked by the time your fried ice cream is done. This is why it is always so important to make sure you know if there are any salmonella scares. Once your ice cream has been prepared with the coating (either eggs or tempura butter) and has had ample time to freeze in a really cold freezer, heat oil in a pan to about 350 degrees. Once your stove is warmed up, put the oil in the pan and allow it to simmer and get warm. Once it is warm, put in some ice cream using a spoon or a spatula if you have one. Once in the oil, the ice cream will need to sit for about one minute. This is precisely why the ice cream needs to be extra cold – so it does not melt right away. Make sure that you do not over fry your ice cream. If you do, you may not be able to fix your mistake, as the ice cream will be melted in with the oil and no longer edible. After you lift your ice cream from the fryer, you can drizzle honey on top for some extra sweetness, or you can add a dollop of whip cream!
