STYLE

ON TRENDS We talk styling, staples and shopping with Indooroopilly Shopping Centre stylists Di Cant and Natalie Pearcy. Natalie Pearcy and Di Cant

Why did you become a stylist? Natalie: I worked in fashion for many years and it was a natural progression based on my experience in the industry. As soon as I began I immediately realised that I loved it and now I never want to stop! Di: In the 1980s I styled major fashion shows for department stores and shopping centres and was often asked to help people with their wardrobe. My profile as fashion educator at June Dally Watkins also introduced me to clients who felt unsure of their ability to dress themselves. What inspires you to help others find their personal style? Natalie: I find that helping others find their own style is extremely rewarding. Often people just need a bit of direction and to be shown what suits their body shape and how to interpret looks in ways that compliment their lifestyle. Once they have achieved this they find that they have a renewed confidence which carries across into other areas of their lives. Di: I love the challenge of styling a woman (or man) and giving them the image they had hoped for. Introducing clients to new ideas, shapes and styles they haven’t ever considered is very rewarding.

8

“...CAMEL AND BOLD COLOURS, LACE, THE FITTED WAIST DRESS, THE PENCIL SKIRT AND CIGARETTE PANTS” What are key trends this season? Natalie: Polished and simple pieces are looking very modern and beautiful. We are seeing very ladylike dresses, tailoring and generally ‘put together’ looks. Di: I have just visited the USA and loved what I saw on the streets – camel and bold colours, lace, the fitted waist dress, the pencil skirt and cigarette pants. What is the must-have piece for the season that every female should have in their wardrobe? Natalie: I can never go past a perfectly structured dress. This season it will have a slightly higher rounded neckline and elbow-length sleeves. Di: Every woman should have a bit of leather in their wardrobe. Start off with a good quality leather jacket but if you’re feeling adventurous choose a little leather skirt!

DESIGNER

/love

We talk to up and coming designer Jaye Leigo from boho brand Somedays Lovin’.

What inspired your current collection? My autumn 2011 is a mash up of everything I loved at the time [of designing]. I also draw inspiration from the environment and I always feel Australia has a worn and gritty feeling alongside a lot of arid beauty so I wanted to tap into that a little. What is your favourite piece in your collection? The Cabin Fever Sherpa vest and the free falling cape (featured above). Who do you see wearing your clothes/what person do you design for? I feel our Somedays girl is very fashion savvy. She is a little bit of a “gyp-setter”, a modern day flower child who loves nothing more than sunshine, barbecues, good music and comfy stuff. She dresses to suit her lifestyle. Where do you begin when you start designing a new collection? I’m really blessed to work with some amazing artists, so collaborating with them is my usual starting point. [I also] scratch around for random references and vintage pieces to inspire me. What are the current trends for autumn/winter 2011? I feel this season encompasses the nomadic traveller, it’s layers of burnt out velvets, Sherpa vests and jackets, fluid paisley maxi dresses and distressed floral.

20

What is the one must-have item this season? The Cabin Fever Sherpa vest!

City Beach

How did you get started as a designer? I started out years ago as a design assistant at Cue, which was a great training ground, I then went on to study fashion design at East Sydney Technical College and a few years later landed an amazing job in Hong Kong. I was the design director for a large American company working with huge brands like Armani Exchange and DKNY. It was amazing and I feel really thankful for the opportunity. Where do you hope to see your brand in 10 years? I want to grow really organically and remain true to who the Somedays girl is. What celebrities would you love to see wearing your clothes? Abbey Lee and Isabela Lucas (massive girl crush)! How would you describe Australian style? Relaxed, effortless and understated. How big is your wardrobe? It’s stupidly large! When I moved home from living in Hong Kong after four years I had 20 crates of clothes and my boyfriend only had one! And it’s not diminishing in size. Who are your favourite Australian designers? I really respect Collette Dinnigan, she has remained true to her aesthetic and her brand over the years and is one of the only Australian designers to be invited to show at Paris which is an enormous achievement. Master stylist and celebrity hairdresser Oscar Cullinan from Oscar Oscar Salons takes us through autumn/winter’s hottest looks. Revita Blonde pack $51.70, Jon Le Court Level 3 p 3378 3310

A change in temperature means it’s the perfect opportunity to update your hair! If it’s a new style you’re after, renowned Australian hairdresser Oscar Cullinan says think pixie. “For short hair the hottest celebrity look of the moment is the pixie crop, as worn by Emma Watson.” Oscar warns it’s a brave choice though with all your features on display! If you’re staying with Rapunzel-like locks it’s all about layers and the longer the better. “You don’t want a lot of shorter layers, as this will thin the ends of your hair and your hairstyle will start to look dated,” he explains. And fringes – in or out? “Bold fringes are still really hot with long hair, so experiment with a fringe that skims your eyes and has some texture and movement.” One of the easiest ways to update your hair is with a new colour and this season get glamorous. “For brunettes the colour needs to be rich with subtle highlights and for blondes the perfect colouring technique is micro-foiling for a very delicate shimmer of colour that blends seamlessly.” Oscar Oscar Level 2 p 3378 5763

Come in from the cold and take comfort from gourmet bites, decadent desserts and hearty mains.

On a roll All aboard the sushi train! Now open in the food court the J Shinsen train will be stopping at all stations serving traditional favourites as well as sushi sandwich and yum-cha. “We also bring the idea of yumcha on the train, like steamed dim sim and pork bun,” says owner Jeffrey Lae who adds that two of the most popular dishes are traditional sashimi and tempura nigri.

Take the cake We’re lucky that our mild Queensland winters mean we can enjoy ice cream all year round! Trampoline makes creamy gelatos on site daily with unique flavours including chocolate nougat and caramel pear. Their eyecatching cakes are also a great idea for your next party (and in winter it’s not going to melt before you’ve finished serving). There’s also a range of hot drinks to warm you up.
