Dear Make-A-Wish Family,

As I look back on this incredible year, one word stands out to me: WishMakers. Each one of you — our donors, volunteers, partners, and supporters — has played an essential role in bringing joy and hope to children across our community. Thanks to your unwavering commitment, we achieved our goal of granting 416 life-changing wishes this year, creating unforgettable moments of joy for children facing unimaginable challenges.

Together, we create life-changing wishes or children with critical illnesses. MAKE-A-WISH ® MISSION

Our chapter has been privileged to witness the boundless kindness and generosity within our community, reminding us that when people come together with a shared purpose, incredible things can happen.

As we look to the future, let us continue to be the WishMakers that children in Central and Western North Carolina need. With your continued support, I am confident that we will keep reaching new heights, touching more lives, and spreading hope to even more children and families.

behind the magic: a wish specialist’s journey to bring hope

At Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina, every wish granted begins with a spark of hope. Behind the scenes, Wish Specialists like Ellie

Tallman dedicate themselves to transforming dreams into reality for children battling critical illnesses. Their work goes far beyond logistics—it’s about creating relationships, spreading joy, and giving families something to look forward to in challenging times. In this heartfelt Q&A, Ellie offers an insider’s perspective on the role of a Wish Specialist, the wish process, and the life-changing impact of a wish.

Can you explain the role of a Wish Specialist? What are your main responsibilities?

“The role of a Wish Specialist comes with many responsibilities, like paperwork, planning, and financial closing, but the most important part is being present for the wish child and their family. It’s about building relationships beyond the wish and letting families know that Make-A-Wish will be there as a support system during one of the most difficult times in their lives. Wish Specialists bring hope through direct communication and by creating an amazing experience from start to finish.”

How does the wish process begin? Can you walk us through how a child is referred to Make-A-Wish?

“The wish process begins with a referral, and what’s special is that anyone can make one. Doctors and medical professionals are often key referral sources because they work closely with families facing critical illnesses, but referrals can also come from family members, friends, or even the wish kids themselves. If someone believes a child might qualify for a wish, they can submit a referral directly through our website. Once we receive the referral, our team carefully reviews the child’s medical eligibility based on national guidelines. If the child qualifies, the family receives an exciting call to let them know they’re part of the Make-A-Wish family, and that’s when the journey truly begins. From there, it’s all about creating an experience that’s unique to the child’s dreams and bringing a little magic into their lives.”

Ellie with wish kid
Darryl

What happens once a child’s wish is approved? What are the first steps in making that wish come true?

“After approval, the family fills out initial paperwork and answers some general questions with a volunteer. Then a Wish Specialist, like me, is assigned to the child. That’s when we schedule a wish discovery visit—this is where we really get to know the child. We talk about their favorite things, from their favorite color to what they love to do on a rainy day. From there, we work with the child to come up with their one true wish. This process helps us ensure that the wish is not only meaningful but also tailored to their unique personality and dreams.”

How long does the entire wish process typically take, from referral to fulfillment?

“The wish process generally takes about six months to a year, though the timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the wish and other factors. Once a child is referred and deemed eligible, there are several steps to ensure every detail of the wish is tailored to the child’s unique desires. From the initial paperwork to the wish discovery visit and planning logistics, every phase requires careful coordination. Some wishes, like travel or events involving specific schedules, may require additional time to align all the moving parts. At the heart of it all, the timeline is about creating an experience that is as meaningful and impactful as possible, and we work hard to ensure every moment is worth the wait.”

How does granting a wish impact the child’s family and their emotional well-being?

“Granting a wish gives the child and their family hope. It gives them something to look forward to. So many of our wish kids spend their days focused on medical treatments or feeling unwell. A wish gives them something outside of their diagnosis to think about, and it has an incredible impact on their mental health and well-being. Seeing their joy and excitement unfold during the process is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.”

What made Darryl’s wish different from others you’ve worked on? How did it inspire you?

“Darryl’s wish was different because of all the rehearsals and planning that went into it. His wish wasn’t just an event; it was an entire production. But at its core, I approached it the same way I do all wishes — with care, time, and effort. Every wish is special in its own way. Darryl’s wish reminded me of how impactful these experiences can be, not just for the wish kids but for the communities that rally around them.”

Were there any memorable or emotional moments during Darryl’s wish process?

“The most impactful part was seeing how the theater community rallied around Darryl. The kindness and respect the cast showed him were incredible — they welcomed him with open arms. Darryl found a community through his wish, and that has stayed with me. I’m forever grateful to everyone in the theater community for making it so special.”

Looking back on Darryl’s wish, what did you learn from it that you now apply to other wishes?

“I learned just how many people want to be part of our mission. When working on project-based wishes like Darryl’s, I’ve learned to ask for help where it’s needed. The community always steps up to bring hope to our wish kids, and that’s a lesson I’ll carry forward.”

what is a

A WishMaker is more than just a title — it’s a call to action, a commitment, and a shared mission. WishMakers are the generous souls who come together to make wishes come true for children facing critical illnesses. Whether you’re a volunteer, donor, local business partner, or simply someone who spreads the word about Make-A-Wish, you’re a WishMaker.

It takes an entire community to make a single wish come to life. From the the doctors and practitioners that recommend the wish kiddos, to the first spark of inspiration when a child imagines their dream, to the planning, coordinating, and the fundraising it takes to bring wish to reality, WishMakers work together every step of the way. Maybe you’re the person who donates air miles for travel wishes, the local baker providing treats for a send-off party, every act of kindness contriutes to the magic of a wish.

Being a WishMaker is also about being part of something bigger than ourselves. It’s about spreading hope and showing wish kids they have a whole community behind them. For families facing the challenges of a critical illness, knowing that so many people care and are willing to support their journey can be life-changing. WishMakers bring comfort, encouragement, and light into times that can feel overwhelming.

when a stage becomes a dream:

It wasn’t just about a stage. It wasn’t even about a performance. This wish, this journey, was about a community — hundreds of people coming together with one goal: to fulfill the dream of a young man who longed to stand under the spotlight.

From the theater managers to local businesses, and volunteers working behind the scenes, the entire community poured their hearts into bringing one dream to life. Together, they built something bigger than any single performance — they built hope, connection, and the power of a shared purpose.

Darryl’s wish wasn’t an ordinary one. In fact, there are no “ordinary” wishes when it comes to Make-A-Wish, but this one was a bit unique. It spanned multiple challenges, and required a remarkable level of dedication and support from the Greensboro community. Darryl didn’t simply wish to meet a celebrity or travel somewhere special — he had a much bigger dream. A dream so tied to his passion for theater and a deep connection to The Lion King, specifically the character of Scar, that it demanded more than the typical path most wishes follow.

From the start, Darryl’s wish required precise planning. He wasn’t content with being an observer. He didn’t want to watch The Lion King on Broadway; he wanted to be Scar. He wanted to perform, to embody the character, and to have his community witness it on stage, live. This dream was born

out of Darryl’s lifelong love for the musical and for theater as a whole. He knew every line, every note, every subtle movement that Scar would make on stage. But this dream, as grand as it was, came with obstacles. The pandemic delayed the process, pushing the timeline back by months, while Darryl’s autism added layers of complexity to the preparation.

Darryl had high expectations for his performance. He wanted it to be as close to a Broadway production as possible, and this desire brought additional challenges for his Wish Specialist, Ellie Tallman. Ellie had helped facilitate countless wishes, but Darryl’s dream was unique. “Darryl’s passion for The Lion King was remarkable, and guiding him through the process was an inspiring experience,” she recalled. “It wasn’t just a performance for him; it was his dream taking shape in a way that showcased his love for theater.”

Two Years of Determination

What followed was an intense collaboration between Make-A-Wish, the Greensboro Community Theatre, and a network of volunteers and sponsors

The stage at the Carolina Theatre, which hosted the event, became a place where Darryl could transform.

You can see Darryl’s story come to life by scanning the QR code below.

who helped turn Darryl’s dream into reality. The pandemic didn’t just cause logistical delays; it also required ongoing coordination to ensure that when the time came, everything would be in place. The wish wasn’t just a one-off event. It was a meticulously crafted production involving costume designers, lighting experts, set builders, and choreographers. Everything had to align with Darryl’s vision.

The local theater community rallied around Darryl’s wish, understanding that this wasn’t just a performance. The stage at the Carolina Theatre, which hosted the event, became a place where Darryl could transform.

“Balancing Darryl’s dream with what was feasible required collaboration and patience,” Ellie said. “But seeing the final result made it all worth it.” Ellie and her team worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure every detail — from Scar’s signature growl to the lighting on stage — was tailored to match Darryl’s exacting standards.

not only Darryl’s creativity but also his resilience. His autism sometimes made it difficult to manage the scale of his ambition, but with Ellie’s guidance, Darryl learned to adapt.

The Greensboro Community Theatre team went beyond the call of duty, ensuring that the production would meet Darryl’s expectations while also providing a professional theater experience for everyone involved.

Bringing Scar to Life

When the time finally arrived, Darryl stepped onto the stage as Scar for three sold-out shows at the Carolina Theatre. It wasn’t just the fulfillment of a wish — it was the culmination of two years of planning, anticipation, and personal growth. As Scar, Darryl commanded the stage. He wasn’t just playing a role; he was Scar, immersing himself in the character he had admired for so long.

The crowd responded with thunderous applause. Darryl’s portrayal of Scar captivated the audience, and it was clear that this wasn’t just a moment for him — it was a triumph for everyone involved in making

his dream a reality. “Being on stage as Scar was everything I dreamed of,” Darryl said after his final performance. “I felt like I was in the movie, like I was really part of the story I’ve loved for so long.”

What made Darryl’s wish so powerful was the way the community rallied behind it. Everyone involved in the production, from the theater board members to local businesses that offered sponsorships, became part of Darryl’s journey. This wasn’t just about helping one young man achieve his dream; it was about bringing an entire community together to create something magical. And for those three performances, the magic was real.

The Power of WishMakers

Darryl’s wish is a reminder of why there are no “normal” wishes. Every child’s dream is unique, and every wish requires dedication, creativity, and compassion. But Darryl’s wish, in particular, emphasized the incredible impact that a community can have when they unite to make a dream come true. His two-year journey required the involvement of dozens of people, each contributing their time, talent, and energy to ensure that Darryl’s vision was fully realized.

Kathy Jetton, CEO of Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina, highlighted the importance of community involvement in making wishes like Darryl’s possible. “Our WishMakers are at the core of what we do,” she said. “Without them, dreams like Darryl’s wouldn’t be possible. They turn our mission into reality, giving children the hope and joy they need.”

In Darryl’s case, it was the collective

effort of countless individuals and organizations that made his dream of becoming Scar come to life. Volunteers, theater staff, and local sponsors all worked together to ensure that every detail was perfect, from the costumes to the stage design. The impact of Darryl’s wish extended far beyond him, touching the lives of everyone who contributed to its success.

For Ellie Tallman, this wish was a highlight of her time with Make-AWish. “It wasn’t just a performance for Darryl; it was a personal journey that brought out his best qualities, and I feel lucky to have been a part of it,” she said. Her words reflect the sentiment that many involved in the wish felt. This wasn’t just about a single boy’s dream coming true; it was about witnessing the power of hope, community, and creativity.

A Legacy of Hope

Darryl’s wish is now part of the legacy of Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina, a story that will continue to inspire future WishMakers, volunteers, and donors. His story is a testament to the idea that no dream is too big, and no wish is too complex. Every wish has the potential to change lives — not just for the children who receive them, but for the people who help make them possible.

As Darryl took his final bow, it wasn’t just the end of a performance. It was the culmination of a journey that had brought an entire community together, transforming one boy’s dream into a reality. And for those who witnessed it, the memory of Darryl’s time as Scar will remain a powerful reminder of the magic that happens when dreams come true.

it takes a community to grant a wish

In Greensboro, Darryl’s wish to perform as Scar in The Lion King became more than a dream on stage — it became a story of how a community can transform a single vision into something unforgettable. While Darryl’s journey highlights his courage and love for theater, it’s also a powerful reminder of the strength that communities bring when they rally together for a purpose. They didn’t just support Darryl; they became WishMakers, each of them adding their unique piece to the tapestry of his dream.

The impact of community in wishes like Darryl’s is profound. A wish granted isn’t only a joyful event for the child; it ripples through the community, inspiring each person involved to see what can be achieved when we work together. Greensboro’s commitment to Darryl’s wish showed that these dreams aren’t just about one moment on stage or one day in the spotlight. They’re about connection, about showing young people facing tremendous challenges that they’re not alone — that they have a whole community cheering for them and believing in their dreams.

Darryl’s wish has left a lasting legacy in Greensboro, reminding everyone who contributed that they helped create not only a magical moment but a lifelong memory. And for those who may have just heard his story or seen him on stage, it’s a reminder of what is possible when a community rises together. The support of Greensboro didn’t just grant a wish; it gave strength, inspiration, and a renewed sense of purpose to everyone involved.

In the end, Darryl’s journey shows us that wishes, much like dreams, require both heart and hands to become real. And in Greensboro, a town that understands the value of community, Darryl’s wish has become a shining example of the magic that happens when we all play our part in making dreams come true

Amos’s wish wasn’t just about seeing the wonders of Yellowstone National Park; it was about experiencing nature up close, feeling the connection with the great outdoors that he loves so much. For the past three years, Amos had been involved in therapeutic horseback riding, which made the opportunity to ride through the stunning Wyoming scenery even more special.

From the loss of her beloved grandson, Xander, to bringing joy to countless children as a Wish Granter, Angel has channeled her personal experiences into a mission of hope. Her compassion, organization, and deep connection with families make her an extraordinary part of the Make-A-Wish community. In this interview, Angel shares the transformative power of wishes and the profound impact of her role as a volunteer.

What inspired you to become a volunteer with Make-A-Wish, and how did your journey begin?

I have donated to Make-A-Wish since its inception, always knowing it was a wonderful organization. After the death of my first grandchild, Xander, who was a wish child, I became a monthly donor in his honor. One day, a representative from Make-A-Wish named April reached out to me to learn more about my monthly donor story. We had a heartfelt conversation, and soon after, we met for breakfast. During that meeting, April suggested I would be a great fit as a Wish Granter. That moment marked the start of my journey with this incredible organization.

Can you share the story of the first wish you helped grant and how it impacted you?

My first wish was conducted via Zoom, and I remember feeling a bit nervous beforehand. However, the family was lovely and so

appreciative of the work I was doing. It was humbling to see how much the wish meant to them, even through a virtual platform. That experience, which took place over three and a half years ago, showed me the deep emotional impact a wish can have, and it left me with a lasting sense of fulfillment.

What do you find most rewarding about being a WishMaker?

The rewards are truly plentiful. Knowing I play a role in bringing joy to a child during a challenging time is heartwarming beyond words. It’s not just about the joy the child feels — it’s also about the happiness and relief it brings to the parents. Witnessing their gratitude and seeing the smiles on their faces brings me immense joy and purpose.

How do you balance volunteering with the other demands of your life?

I am fortunate to be very organized, which helps me manage my time

effectively. I also work closely with Amanda, who is a great support in this journey. While it can be a tough balance at times, I make it a priority to connect with the families I’m assigned to, often reaching out during evenings or on weekends. It’s a commitment I take seriously, and I always strive to give my best to every family.

How do you tailor the wish experience to ensure it’s unique and meaningful for each child?

I treat each wish as if it were for my own family. Listening actively and building rapport with both the parents and the child are essential parts of the process. Many families are incredibly thankful for the work we do, and that gratitude motivates me to go the extra mile to make their experience special. I try to focus on their individual needs and dreams, ensuring the wish reflects who they are.

What transformations have you witnessed in children and their families after their wishes were granted?

I’ve seen firsthand how a wish can be life-changing. One family shared how their child’s Hawaiianthemed wish became the highlight of their lives. Another family, whose daughter received photography equipment, expressed how much it gave her a sense of purpose during her treatment. These moments underscore the lasting impact that wishes have, not just on the children, but on the entire family.

How does granting a wish create lasting memories for families facing critical illnesses?

Families often express how the excitement surrounding the wish

stays with them long after the experience itself. For many, the wish becomes a beacon of joy during a difficult journey. The memories created are cherished forever, offering a sense of hope and happiness that helps them through challenging times.

Can you share a particularly memorable wish story that deeply moved you?

One of the most touching experiences I’ve had was with a child whose mom I interviewed. After I expressed my hope that her daughter would have a wonderful wish journey, the little girl chimed in and said, “Angel, my wish is to meet you.” I was deeply moved by her words. I later had the privilege of meeting her and conducting her Discovery visit at the Wish office. She was a darling girl who brought so much love and light to everyone she encountered. It was a moment I’ll never forget.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a Make-A-Wish volunteer?

My advice is to only volunteer if

That (first) experience, which took place over three and a half years ago, showed me the deep emotional impact a wish can have, and it left me with a lasting sense of fulfillment.
— Angel, volunteer

you’re ready to make a genuine commitment to the organization. This is emotional work that requires an open heart and mind. However, the rewards are immeasurable. Knowing that you’ve played a part in bringing joy and purpose to a child and their family is a gift that stays with you forever. It’s a privilege to be part of something so meaningful.

Now, with renewed determination, we’re eagerly looking ahead to an unforgettable Spring 2025 season.

Among the many inspiring stories from the trail are those of the Hill Twins, proud Trailblaze Challenge alumni. “As identical twins, we love tackling challenges together,” they shared. “When we first joined the Trailblaze Challenge, we saw it as a perfect bonding experience and a way to support our community. Little did we know how much more it would give to us.” For participants like the Hill Twins, the Challenge is more than a physical journey; it’s a profound connection to a mission that changes lives.

looking ahead: a legacy of wishes, a future of impact

As we approach our 40th anniversary in 2025, Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina reflects on four decades of transformative wishes. Since our founding in 1985, we’ve granted more than 5,000 life-changing wishes, each one leaving a lasting impact on the lives of children, their families, and the communities around them. But our work is far from finished. As we look ahead, we are more committed than ever to ensuring that every eligible child, regardless of where they live or their background, gets to experience the magic of a wish.

Our chapter’s first wish was granted in 1985 to an 8-year-old boy named Jason. Jason’s one true wish was to meet his favorite football player, Miami Dolphins Quarterback Dan Marino. Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina has granted more than 6,000 wishes since 1985.

In 2023, we focused on reaching the children who may have been missed during the challenges of the past few years. Through the efforts of our Medical Outreach and Intake Manager, we deepened our connections with medical providers in more remote and underserved areas, ensuring that every corner of our chapter territory is represented. We are proud to have made significant strides toward increasing diversity and inclusion in our wish-granting process, but we know there’s more to be done. Looking forward, our goal remains clear: to serve every child who needs us, breaking down barriers so that no child is left behind.

As we celebrate our 40th year, we invite you to join us in continuing this legacy of impact. The heart of our mission has always been the WishMakers — supporters like you — who make these wishes possible. Together, we will create even more joyful moments for children battling critical illnesses, helping them find hope and strength in the most challenging times. With your help, the next 40 years will be even more impactful, as we strive to bring the power of a wish to every eligible child across North Carolina.

A Legacy of Hope: The David & Nicole Tepper Foundation’s Partnership with Make-A-Wish

For decades, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has worked tirelessly to support children with critical illnesses across the world — providing hope, inspiration, and light in times of darkness. By granting these children’s wishes, the Make-A-Wish Foundation turns dreams into reality. Through our partnership with Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina, we at The David and Nicole Tepper Foundation have witnessed this profound impact firsthand. We are honored to work alongside this incredible organization as, together, we strive to bring optimism and joy into the lives of our state’s most vulnerable and courageous children.
