Don’t Wait for Hope.

C R E AT E I T. 2020 was a year of unexpected challenges. The world came to a halt, and we all got a glimpse of what it feels like to have to wait for hope. But 2021 has been a year of resilience, strength, and innovation. The global pandemic challenged the core of our mission, as wishes that involved travel or large gatherings were no longer safe. In such challenging times, our mission has never been more essential. For Make-A-Wish, Fiscal Year 2021 was not defined by the pandemic. It was defined by your ongoing commitment to creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Thank you for being there for wish kids, no matter the circumstances.

Because of you, we found new and creative ways to deliver hope and encouragement to children who were waiting for their wish to come true. We pivoted our mission to more virtual and socially distant wish experiences, which led to more than 227 children’s wishes being granted in FY21– a true testament to your resilience. You have truly built a community that rallies around wish kids, and we are so grateful.

How we approach our mission continues to evolve, and your support also positioned the organization to re-evaluate how we reach underserved communities. Systemic racial injustice teaches us that, while it has long been a priority for our organization to reach the underserved, we must move forward at an even more accelerated pace. It is our vision to reach every eligible child, so we will continue to do the hard work required to ensure that children in underserved communities can experience the wish journey and its everlasting impact.

Thanks to caring people like you, the innovation we pursue today lays the foundation for delivering continued hope and joy tomorrow. We wouldn’t have been able to navigate the past year with such strength and innovation without you. As one Make-A-Wish community, we should all be proud to look back on FY21 and say: We didn’t wait for hope. We created it.

DO N O R S POTLIG HT RO BIN S MITH -SAL ZMAN Robin Smith-Salzman is no stranger to granting wishes. An avid supporter since 2013, Robin loves to give back and to make wishes extra special. Robin first encountered Make-A-Wish as a sponsor and then became a “Fairy Godmother” as a part of the W.I.S.H. Society, a women’s group dedicated to granting wishes.

On the day of Emma’s wish, Robin went above and beyond to create a magical environment complete with extravagant balloons and a beautifully decorated pool for Emma to swim in. Best of all, a guest had arrived from under the sea to celebrate Emma’s wish day. As a special surprise, Emma was going to be able to swim with

Because of her extraordinary dedication to wishes, Robin has been selected as the first-ever Wish Ball Chair, responsible for leading a cabinet dedicated to raising funds for the 2022 event on February 25th.

“It was a really great time today,” Robin recalled,“To be able to be a part of a day that a whole family can enjoy… that’s a great thing. I wish that anybody that is a donor or wants to be a donor has the opportunity to feel the way I do today. It just fills your heart more than you can ever imagine!”

Emma’s wish was a bright spot for her entire family. “Obviously no one wants to have this occur to their child, but just to have a few moments where she could stop thinking about going through treatment and be allowed to just do her own thing...she will remember this for the rest of her life,” Emma’s dad said with a smile.

It was because of a special community of donors and supporters that Emma got to feel like the beautiful mermaid that she always knew she was. This is an experience Emma and her whole family will cherish for the rest of their lives.

Medical Referral Spotlight For the past two years, Dr. Cassady Hossenlopp has been on a mission to reach more patients with critical rheumatology and nephrology conditions at Levine Children’s Hospital. In 2019, she was challenged to select a focus area to improve quality of care for Levine Children’s Hospital patients. After learning that the hospital was missing the opportunity to refer a significant number of eligible children for a wish, she designed a project focused on increasing patient referrals for Make-A-Wish.

The project concluded with impact. The last month, February 2021, had the most nephrology and rheumatology referrals since starting the initiative! The research project also left a profound impact on Dr. Hossenlopp.

Our Virtual Kentucky Derby Classic took place on Saturday, September 5th, 2020.

Generous supporters from across the state came together to raise over $113,000 for local wish kids, all from the comfort of their own homes. Like our usual in-person event, our “Derby at Home” featured inspiring wish stories, silent and live auctions, and a Fund-A-Wish campaign. We even got to stream a live wish granting, as wish kid Macie saw her pink unicorn treehouse wish become a reality. VIRTUAL WISH BALL

February 26th, 2021 was a historic night for our chapter with the broadcast of our first EVER virtual Wish Ball. Over 500 incredible supporters tuned in to watch an inspirational evening that ultimately raised $480,000 for our wish families. The stars truly aligned that evening as a competitive live auction and Fund-A-Wish, along with generous sponsorships and a robust silent auction, resulted in enough funding to grant over 80 local wishes! We can’t wait to see everyone back in person for the 19th Annual Wish Ball on February 25th, 2022 at the Westin in Charlotte. The event will also feature an option to participate from home. TRAILBLAZE CHALLENGE

Our Spring 2021 Trailblaze hikes marked the first in-person events at our chapter in over a year. Pair that fact with an incredible group of 90 hikers tackling 28.3 miles of the Foothills Trail in ONE day, and you have a recipe for an awe-inspiring experience. Our Trailblazers raised enough to grant over 40 local wishes this past spring and have raised over $5,000,000 since the program’s inception in 2013.

Q: We often refer to our wishes as “life-changing”. Kierra, how would you say your wish changed your life?

My wish to see Hamilton on Broadway was honestly mind-blowing. When I was in middle school, I had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up. When I got my wish granted, I honestly just wanted to see what Broadway was like. The energy in the theater blows it out of the water.

I got my wish granted in 7th grade and then the summer before high school I attended a theater camp at a local playhouse. When I got on stage for the first time and the spotlights were shining on me, I almost cried. That just sold it for me. I was like, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

Q: How did you first start giving back to Make-A-Wish, and how are you still giving back today?

I was really excited when Make-A-Wish first reached out to me to help with a project
