At Make-A-Wish®, we believe a single wish can transform a child’s life. That’s why we are on a mission to grant the wish of every child diagnosed with a critical illness. Life for these children can be scary, uncertain and overwhelming. Then a wish comes along, giving them renewed energy and strength.

Many of the wishes we grant are for experiences such as being a firefighter, traveling to an exotic destination or getting a puppy.

Every wish we grant at Make-A-Wish is as unique as the child.

As you may be aware, independent, recently published medical research is beginning to reveal new levels of wish impact ... even beyond what you may have imagined. One study quantifies the physiological and financial impact of a wish and directly links wishes to improved health outcomes.

You also may have noticed our mission statement has been refined and our brand has an updated look and feel to reflect our progress. Just one more indication of these exciting times.

Founded in fall 2018, the Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina Medical Ambassador Council has been instrumental in increasing medical outreach. The group is composed of six physicians who provide input and guidance on outreach initiatives, assist in educating and engaging other medical professionals and act as advocates for Make-AWish in the medical community. The Council aligns with the chapter’s vision to reach every eligible child by intentionally and actively taking steps to reach more medical teams who can refer their eligible patients.

I wish to meet exotic animals on a safari Jayla, 10 | Concord cystic fibrosis

Wish kid Jayla is absolutely wild about animals! It is hard to get her to talk about anything other than her pets or the unusual creatures she’s read about in books. She even dreams of one day becoming an exotic animal veterinarian so she can help sick animals. Growing up with cystic fibrosis, Jayla is no stranger to hospitals and treatments. She knows the impact a doctor can have on a patient and hopes to provide that same care to animals one day.

When thinking of her one-true-wish, Jayla imagined what it would be like to meet as many exotic animals as she could and wished to go on a safari in San Diego.

Jayla and her family made the trek across the country and arrived in San Diego for the adventure of a lifetime. During their first day, they received a VIP tour of the two-thousand acres at Safari Park.

They went behind the scenes to see several animals up close and personal. Jayla met deer, goats, birds and foxes. She even saw a lion roaring so loudly that she could feel it in her chest! The next day, they visited Nurtured by Nature, which provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience through individual animal encounters. Jayla got to meet a sloth, porcupine, several reptiles, and kangaroos. For Jayla, the best part was getting to swim with the otters, which her mom said she had never witnessed anything like it before. During the trip, Jayla and her family also got to visit San Diego Zoo, eat at delicious restaurants, experience the culture the city has to offer at Belmont Park, and relax every evening at the hotel pool.

At the end of her unforgettable trip, Jayla packed up her suitcase and boarded the plane with her new sloth and cheetah stuffed animals as souvenirs to commemorate the trip.

When they returned home, Jayla’s mom said,

“Imagine getting the one thing that you absolutely want in this world – that is what this experience was for her!

She will remember this for the rest of her life!”

OCTOBER 2018 Wish kid Elliott grew up an avid Cincinnati Reds fan because of his love of Ohio that he learned from his parents. After being diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, he had to stop playing in his baseball league, but still went to every game to cheer on his team. It was that spirit and positive attitude that helped Elliott face treatment and successfully beat his critical illness. To cap off his recovery, he had the opportunity to visit the Cincinnati Reds baseball team for his wish to be their manager for the day.

When Elliott arrived at the stadium for his wish, he was brought to his very own locker that was loaded up with team gear.

During the day, Elliott shadowed the Reds’ Coach Jim Riggleman, threw out the first pitch, and hung out with the guys in the dugout. Throughout the entire experience, he sported his new, custom jersey with his favorite number. The game he attended was also the Reds’ Knock Cancer Out of The Park event. When players and fans in attendance were asked to write down names of loved ones who have battled cancer, Elliott wrote “ME.” At the end of his wish day, Elliott said,

“Today has been an amazing adventure.

I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

NOVEMBER 2018 During long hours spent in treatment for his kidney disease, wish kid Ashton often escaped to a new world by reading his favorite Harry Potter books. Ashton dreamed he had the same magical powers as his favorite characters in the story. When it was time to pick his wish, he knew he wanted to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where he could turn into a real wizard!

Ashton and his family packed up the car and headed to Orlando. When they arrived at Give Kids the World Village, Ashton was so excited it was where he would be spending the week. He loved the parties that are thrown every night at the Village and eating ice cream for every meal.

For Ashton, the best part of the trip was getting a private tour of the theme park. “I was so excited I thought my heart would explode,” he said about the experience. Ashton also attended a wand ceremony at Ollivanders, which is what he was most looking forward to before the trip.

“My wish was even more amazing than I could have dreamed. I could not have imagined a more perfect week. I forgot I was sick.”

Maryam is a kindhearted 15-year-old girl who has always dreamed of living in a colorful, cartoon world.

She loves watching animated movies, especially Disney movies, and reading Dr. Seuss books. Due to her nervous system disorder, Maryam spends most of her time at home.

Her favorite thing to do is escape into a world with bright colors and funny characters. For her wish, she knew she wanted to go to the one place she could see all of her favorite characters come to life: Disney World.

During her wish trip, Maryam was truly able to enjoy herself and escape into a world she always dreamed of. Her favorite part of the trip was visiting the Dr. Seuss characters at Islands of Adventure where she pretended to be a Who from Whoville and met the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, and Thing One and Thing Two. She also loved visiting the Magic Kingdom where she met Cinderella, Mickey Mouse, and Goofy. The way Maryam’s face lit up as she traveled around Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld was indescribable. Maryam and her family made unforgettable memories to cherish forever.

Pitchin’ For Wishes | November 3, 2018

T

he Pitchin’ for Wishes Cornhole Tournament benefiting Make-A-Wish® Central & Western North Carolina returned November 3, 2018 for it’s 11th year. Thank you to all 67 of the sponsors that donated to Pitchin’ for Wishes, the 176 teams that came out to participate, and the 400+ spectators and local partners that contributed to this amazing event. Thanks to these supporters, we were able to raise $216,000 for Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina to help grant the wishes of children with critical illnesses in our local community.

The tournament is held every fall in Freedom Park and features an NCAA bracket style cornhole competition, as well as food, drinks, music, kids’ activities and more.

This two-time Guinness World Record setting event is made possible by the Roby Family of Companies and Harris Teeter each year. It is their mission to raise another $225,000 in 2019 alone, which will allow us to grant 37 wishes. Make sure to save the date for the 2019 cornhole tournament: November 2nd at Freedom Park!

Pitchin’ for Wishes holds a Guinness World Record for the largest cornhole tournament in the world.

Trailblaze Challenge Fall Season

D

uring October 2018, 88 hikers accepted the Trailblaze Challenge® and tackled a 28.3 mile hike in one life-changing day! In addition to being an extraordinary physical test, participants are challenged to also raise funds to grant the wishes of local children with critical illnesses.

Hikers of all levels are encouraged to join!

“Olivia’s Trail Warriors” were our top fundraisers this fall. The team hiked in honor of Kim & Damon’s daughter and wish kid Olivia.

During the fall season, the Trailblaze Challenge raised $246,000 of valuable funds for Make-A-Wish® Central & Western North Carolina.

With this money, our chapter was able to make 41 wishes come true.

Since the Trailblaze Challenge began in 2013 over 1,200 hikers have participated and have raised over $4.5 million for children in our local community.

This is a hike, not a race, and caters to all levels from novice to advanced outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers and volunteers are encouraged to participate in one of our spring or fall hikes. Not only does the trek provide a personal opportunity for adventure and fitness, it also makes a direct impact on the lives of local children battling critical illnesses. By helping grant their wishes, participants give local wish families the strength they need to keep fighting.

We’re looking forward to our fall hike on October 11-13, 2019!

JANUARY 2019 Vlad is an outgoing 13-year-old boy who loves gaming, being silly with his family, and watching Finn Balor wrestle on WWE. Growing up in and out of the hospital, Vlad spent much of his time watching wrestling because it offered an escape from the everyday world. Just like his favorite wrestlers, Vlad learned to suit up and face his own battle every day, head on. For his wish, he wanted to watch his favorite wrestler, Finn Baylor, live in Memphis.

Vlad’s wish day started with meeting his idol, Finn Balor.

They talked about Memphis and, of course, how excited Vlad was to see a WWE wrestling match live that evening. Rolling up to the match in a limo, he felt like a rock star. Not only did Vlad and his family have amazing seats for the match, but he also got a special shout out from his favorite WWE star. In Vlad’s own words, said it was the “best night ever!” Before returning home, Vlad and his family got to explore more of Memphis, and he was even made the honorary duck master for the Peabody hotel!

Vlad’s mom was so thankful that she was able to see her son’s wish come true. She said,

“This was the first time in a long time that we didn’t have to worry about anything and we could just relax and enjoy time together.”

FEBRUARY 2019 William’s wish is a slam dunk William is a 12-year-old boy who loves playing video games, hanging out with his friends, and watching sports, especially basketball.

Born with a neuromuscular disorder, his dad said that basketball has been an escape for William throughout his diagnosis and treatment. Although his condition does not allow him to be as active as he’d like to be, he still looks up to his favorite basketball players, and wished to be just like them by becoming a Charlotte Hornets player.

William’s wish day started with a tour of the Spectrum Center and breakfast with a few of the players before heading into pre-game practice with the rest of the team.

He spent the day getting autographs, playing NBA 2k with Miles Bridges, and sitting in an interview with Dell Curry where he shared that he thought the Hornets would hold the Warriors! He even got to sign a one-day contract in an official press conference! During warm-ups for the game, William showed off some of his basketball skills and participated in Kemba Walker’s ball handling drills and finished it with a bucket! William spent the rest of the game cheering on the team courtside with his family.

For William, the best part of the day was meeting all the big players, which he said was “really cool.” Now whenever William and his family watch the Hornets on TV, they are reminded of the unforgettable experience they shared with their favorite team.

n Friday, February 22, 2019, Make-AW i s h ® C e n t r a l & We s t e r n N o r t h Carolina hosted the annual Wish Ball at The Westin Charlotte.

For the past 15 years, supporters have come from far and wide to The Wish Ball, Make-AWish Central and Western North Carolina’s signature blue-tie gala, in celebration and honor of the life-changing impact of a wish. On behalf of Della, Aniya, Logan, Nicholas, William, and every local wish family, thank you to all who were able to attend. We are humbled and inspired by your support, and we hope you wi l l continue to be a part of our Make-AWish family for years to come. Wish Ball come to life. This year we raised close to $600,000, helping to grant wishes for children in our community with critical illnesses. That means nearly 100 children, just like the amazing wish kids that attended the Wish Ball, will receive the life-changing impact of a wish.

MARCH 2019 For wish kid Jadyn, family has always been the center of her world. “Jadyn’s greatest joys come from being with and around people. There is nothing that brings her more happiness than being with people that she loves and that love her,” says her mother. After being diagnosed with a genetic disorder in first grade, Jadyn’s mother and father have always been by her side helping her through treatments and doctor’s appointments. When thinking about what she would want for her wish, Jadyn only had one thing in mind, she wanted to go to Argentina to see her “Abu” (Abuela/ Grandma) and meet her cousins. Although her complex medical condition would make this a challenging trip, Jadyn never wavered on her wish and was determined to spend her wish with her entire family.

After months of planning, Jadyn and her family boarded the plane and headed for Cordoba, Argentina. When they arrived, her grandparents were waiting at the airport and the moment Jadyn saw them she raced into their arms.

There was a celebration planned back at their house with a giant banner welcoming the entire family to Argentina.

They spent the week with Jadyn’s aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents, sharing stories and playing together.

They experienced the Argentina countryside, visited local markets, and even went horse-back riding. Throughout the trip, Jadyn’s mom said that her cousins never left her and her brother’s side.

After returning from the trip, Jadyn’s mom said,

“It was everything Jadyn could ever have imagined and then some! It was truly amazing and Jadyn had the most wonderful time!”

MAY 2019 When a child qualifies for a wish, they are encouraged to think of an experience beyond their wildest imaginations. For 9-yearold Gracelyn, this meant going shopping at Target. However, this wouldn’t be just an ordinary shopping trip; Gracelyn decided she wanted to do it “Supermarket Sweep” style, which meant she only had 10 minutes to fill her cart with new clothes, toys and everything a girl could want. She also wanted to give back during her wish. Levine Children’s Hospital has become like a second home for Gracelyn after spending so much time in treatment on the 10th floor. During her shopping spree she wanted to pick out items the other children at the hospital could enjoy as well.

World Wish Day Celebration April 27, 2019

orld Wish Day® is a global celebration of the hundreds of thousands of life-changing wishes that have been granted - and all those still to come. On Saturday, April 27, 2019, Make-A-Wish® Central & Western North Carolina celebrated this monumental occasion at Carowinds. We had over 300 people join us for the World Wish Day Celebration!

The beautiful weather, our incredible guest speaker, Dr. Pope, a visit from Charlie Brown and Snoopy, and the smiling faces of all our wonderful supporters who attended, made for an absolute perfect day. It was a time to thank the donors, volunteers, and doctors that help us make the impossible possible for wish kids. Together, we can give children the strength to fight, to get better, and to grow up. Join us April 2020 for the World Wish Day celebration, and help us continue to transform the lives of children with critical illnesses.

n Saturday, May 4, 2019, Make-A-Wish® Central & Western North Carolina hosted the sixth annual Kentucky Derby Classic at High Caliber Stables. The organization’s signature fundraising event in the Triad brought together over 400 guests from across the Greensboro and surrounding communities to celebrate the life-changing impact that a wish can make for a child facing a critical illness.

Raising over $300,000, the memorable and inspiring afternoon encompassed all things Kentucky Derby with traditional mint juleps by GIA: Drink, Eat, Listen, live and silent auctions, a hat contest, “betting” at the Fink’s Jewelers Sportsbook, and of course, a live feed of the Derby’s 145th Run for the Roses as the historic finish took place at Churchill Downs.

Guests also enjoyed unique surprises from local wish families including a performance from wish kid Aniya and seeing Devin’s wish to have a cowboy makeover come true!

This tournament provides the opportunity to enjoy a day of golf on Cedarwood Country Club’s pristine course, followed by a post golf event. There is golfing, heav y hors d’oeuvres, music, raff le, silent auction and more, all while raising vital funds to grant the wishes of kids in our community battling critical illnesses.

Thank you to the tournament’s incredible sponsors, participants, and committee members, who over t he past 5 years have helped raise $335,000 to help grant the wishes in our local community. A special thank you to Gary Barber and Debbie King for their leadership and tenacity for making the tournament possible each year. Trailblaze Challenge Spring Season

D It’s more than just a hike, it’s a personal journey.

u r i ng spri ng 2019, 178 hi kers completed t he Trai l blaze Chal lenge ®, raising $528,000 of valuable funds for the Make-AWish® Central & Western North Carolina. This event alone allowed us to make 88 wishes come true. In addition to being an extraordinary physical test, participants are challenged to also raise funds to grant the wishes of local children with critical illnesses. Since the Trailblaze Challenge began in 2013, over 1,200 hikers have participated and have raised over $4.5 million for children in our local community.

This is a hike, not a race, and hikers at all levels are encouraged to participate in one of our spring or fall hikes. Not only does the trek provide a personal opportunity for adventure and fitness, it also makes a direct impact on the lives of local children and their families. By helping grant their wishes, participants give local wish families the strength they need to keep fighting.

Take the opportunity to push your limits and truly challenge yourself.

Information meetings for the spring hikes will kick-off in January 2020!

Anna’s first seizure happened when she was just three years old. “I’ll never, ever forget that day. The look in her eyes, the feeling of realizing she actually had a seizure, and getting that confirmed with her doctor,” Anna’s mom says.

After the initial seizure came months of doctors’ appointments and testing before a blood test confirmed her nervous system disorder. Although her parents were relieved to know what the cause was, they were heartbroken with the news that her syndrome has no cure. The family joined support groups for her condition where they learned that children with her condition had potential to qualify for Make-A-Wish. They referred her and started imagining what the perfect wish for Anna would be.

With her love of Moana, Anna’s family considered a trip to Disney World or Hawaii but realized that Anna wouldn’t likely benefit from the trip. They wanted something they knew she would enjoy and kept coming back to having a pool. “Anna loves water. And she was happy with water from any source whether it be the hose, a pool, bathtub, shower, etc. but she especially lit up when she saw swimming pools. After a summer where we visited the beach and a waterpark, Anna made great strides in her physical therapy. It was then that we began exploring the option of a pool as Anna’s wish.”

After plans were drawn up, arrangements were made for Anna’s pool to be built, filled with water and other goodies. Anna would sit and watch the progress knowing it was all for her. The first time she got in the pool she squealed in excitement.

“The joy on her face was absolutely priceless.

Words won’t do it justice,” her mom explains thinking back on that moment. Anna continues to show the same excitement and smiles each time she gets in the pool. “The laughs, joy and

smiles we see are confirmation that she has her one-true wish.” The pool not only provides joy and laughter for Anna; It’s also an opportunity for her entire family to enjoy time together. They all get to experience Anna’s smiles and giggles and have fun together.

Aside from the emotional benefit the pool provides, it is also an opportunity to improve Anna’s physical abilities. The pool gives Anna freedom to move in ways she cannot do outside the water. Her mom says, “She is excelling in all of her therapy goals which we attribute to the cognitive and motor function she exerts while ‘playing’ in the water.”

“As a wish family, we are so very grateful for the giving heart of the donors who make wishes such as this possible. These individuals give so much so that children and their families can experience joy during a time where joy is hard to find. To have this wish granted is a dream come true. We never thought it would be possible, but we are forever happy and grateful that the possibility is now a reality!”

I wish to visit the cat sanctuary in Hawaii

“We met with Make-A-Wish early on in Ava’s cancer diagnosis. Shortly after the meeting, Ava was so incredibly ill that she could do almost nothing other than try to sleep between bouts of vomiting.

She didn’t go to school; she ultimately withdrew altogether from her junior year of high school as she was not well enough even for the classes to be continued at home or the hospital. During that time when she was the most ill, she spent much of her time on the internet. She immersed herself in a world of pets, rescues and reading about animal sanctuaries. I do not know exactly how she found the Lanai Cat Sanctuary, but once she did, she set her sights on visiting that sanctuary and Hawaii happened to be the location.

Ava’s smile and joy at the cat sanctuary was amazing. I’ve only seen her smile like that one other time since she was diagnosed: when she rang the bell as an official end to her chemo. The trip to the cat sanctuary brought so much happiness to her and it made me cry to see it. She was in her own version of heaven. She laid on the grass and had cats walking and climbing all over her. She was very interested in the senior center and the area with the ill cats. The behind the scenes tour was wonderful. She is now talking about living in the area and volunteering at the sanctuary after nursing school.

I could go on and on about how wonderful the trip was for Ava, her sister and me. It was another life changer for Ava. Cancer did take her life away in one way because it took her version of normal and turned it upside down; but Ava has made the best of it, and part of the very best of it was this experience. She is now looking forward to graduating from nursing school, being a pediatric hematology-oncology nurse and living in Hawaii so she can volunteer at the sanctuary.”

After initially getting involved with Make-A-Wish through her company, Barbara was committed to experiencing more of the mission and decided to become a Volunteer Wish Granter.

One of her first wish experiences was with wish kid Shanya.

Although Shanya is nonverbal, the moment she came into the Wish Discovery Visit, Barbara didn’t skip a beat. “I felt an immediate connection with her,” Barbara said when thinking back to that moment. “When she smiled, I knew that we were going to have the best time determining her wish.” Barbara began asking Shanya and her grandma questions and when the idea of having a puppy came up, Shanya lit up and threw her hands in the air in excitement.

It was clear that having a small dog she could name Fluffy would be the perfect wish for her.

On the day of Shanya’s wish, Barbara arrived at The Wishing Place early so she would have plenty of time to arrange all the goodies that were donated by Petland. Fluffy would be receiving the royal treatment with a new bed, blanket, treats, bath supplies and, of course, plenty of fun new toys. Barbara was giddy with excitement when she found out that she would be the one to hand the puppy to Shanya “When I came into the room with the puppy and her eyes lit up, it was such an amazing feeling!” Barbara said.

After taking Fluffy home, Shanya’s grandmother told Barbara that the two were inseparable. Barbara said, “I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of the wish process.

A wish gives a child a moment to not worry about their illness, but to create memories with their families that they can cherish.”

The Wishing Place WHERE WISHES HAVE A PLACE TO CALL HOME On Tuesday, January 29, 2019, we opened the doors to The Wishing Place. During the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Celebration, we recognized our incredibly generous donors and heard from wish kid Cainan about the lifechanging impact a wish makes. Following the ceremony, we cut the ribbon and opened the doors for all to explore, take photos, enjoy sweet treats, and celebrate the monumental occasion!

Kamille’s wish to have a pool was granted in 2017. Later that year, her mom Charlene spoke at the annual W.I.S.H. Society Luncheon about the impact the pool has made on their family and how incredible their wish experience was.

Charlene was so moved by the event that she signed up to be a 2018 Honoree and raised funds to grant more wishes like her daughter’s.

In October 2018, wish kid Jacob and his dad completed the Trailblaze Challenge where they hiked 28.3 miles in one life-changing day. After an impactful weekend, the duo decided to return to the trail as volunteers in order to help other participants finish the hike the next season.

Wish kid Elliott is always ‘game’ to share the story of how his wish to be the Manager of the Cincinnati Reds was granted. Pictured here at the Copperhead Strike Media Day hosted by Carowinds, Elliott captivated attendees with his charisma and gratitude for making wishes possible. He accepted a check for over $10,000 on behalf of the Copperhead Strike Auction.

For the past three years, the community has rallied around wish kid Mason as part of the team “Mase’s Magic Makers.” Each February, an online auction is held which features small shop makers donating their handmade goods and services. This year’s auction raised over $3,000 to make more wishes like Mason’s come true!

During her brother’s wish trip to go to Hawaii, Alexandra took hundreds of photos of the breathtaking tropical scenery. She shared her talents by painting one of the photos, which was auctioned off at the 2019 Wish Ball. The painting raised $12,000 to help grant more wishes like her brother’s.

Wish mom Marie completed the Trailblaze Challenge in June 2019, less than a year after her daughter’s wish to have a playset was granted. Not only did she complete the 28.3-mile hike with the top 5 finishers, she was also awarded one of the top season’s fundraisers, raising over $8,000.

Gabi’s wish was granted in 2017 and her mom Brooke has been dedicated to Wishing It Forward ever since! Brooke joined the W.I.S.H. Society in November and raised over $22,000. In July 2019, Brooke and her family wanted to continue granting more wishes and hosted an event at the Asheboro Copperheads baseball game that raised over $15,000!

As a special way to recognize event sponsors and W.I.S.H. Society Honorees, wish alums like Olivia have helped record thank you videos to share online and at events. Olivia has helped with videos for the Kentucky Derby Classic (pictured here), W.I.S.H. Society and Wish Ball.

Since October 2017, wish mom Chandrea has inspired local schools to help grant wishes.

Students, teachers and faculty members from 11 Chesterbrook Academy Preschools came together to raise over $8,700 during the 2018 holiday season. To date, the schools have raised nearly $33,000 to help grant more wishes to kids like Chandrea’s daughter Chloe.

• Wish Specialist and volunteer wish granter meet with wish child and family to determine wish • Paperwork is brought back to the office and wish planning begins

Initial Interview Wish Discovery Visit

Wish is approved & scheduled

• Wish Specialist contacts volunteer wish granter to inform wish is approved • Wish enhancement is done by wish granter to build excitement for the wish

• Community Engagement Specialist calls family and schedules wish discovery visit • Child goes on sign up for a volunteer wish granter

Wish is granted!

• Life-changing wish is granted to the child • Joy is created!

Our local chapter grants more than 350 wishes each year Since 1985, more than 5,110 wishes have been granted 100% local: Our mission is delivered at the grassroots level The average cost of a wish is $6,000 Our service area includes four major medical centers: Levine Children’s Hospital, Hemby Children’s Hospital, Mission Children’s Hospital & Brenner Children’s Hospital.
