Reflections on the past year

Dear Friends and Supporters, Welcome to the celebration of 50 life-changing wishes across South Dakota and Montana! All granted in a year where travel by air and attendance at theme parks was not a wish option.

The limitations brought by the global pandemic became opportunities for our staff and volunteers to re-imagine wishes in the most creative of ways. What didn’t change and never will is the strength, hope and transformation a wish brings to every child and family we serve.

Behind every wish are donors whose generosity made that wish come true. We couldn’t be more grateful to our generous supporters who are our partners in achieving our beautiful mission: Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

September 1 marked the significant milestone of our one-year anniversary of the realignment between our South Dakota and Montana chapters. Moving

forward as one chapter, we are united in our determination to find every eligible child and grant them a life-changing wish.

Of course, we can only accomplish such a worthy goal by drawing on the passion and selfless commitment of those who preceded us. In their early years of service, many of our chapter’s founders and supporters not only volunteered their time to ensure the health and sustainability of our chapters, they also raised the money to grant wishes and, ultimately, help us achieve financial security.

Our hearts were heavy in recent months as we said goodbye to two leaders very dear to our chapter—one in South Dakota and one in Montana.

In South Dakota, we celebrated the life and legacy of Cindy Walsh, (August 7, 1952-September 26, 2021), a true luminary in our chapter’s proud history.

Cindy selflessly served our chapter as

a board member for 12 years (19922003), serving as chair for two of those years (2001 and 2002). Memorials dedicated in Cindy’s name have already raised enough to grant two wishes in Cindy’s memory.

In Montana, we honored the memory of Peter Green (May 21, 1962-June 9, 2021). Peter was an enthusiastic supporter of Make-A-Wish, most recently serving as a member of the Billings Community Council where he worked with great kindness and skill to raise money and make more wishes come true. Peter’s family has also generously directed memorials to our chapter, which are very close to raising enough to grant a wish in Peter’s memory.

It is to the memory of these two extraordinary members of our Make-A-Wish family that we dedicate this newsletter.

They will both be missed, but their memories endure in the wishes we grant.

Wish Perspective

“I wish to be an Air Force pilot for a day” It’s not just any day that an air national guard base pauses all other responsibilities to host one guest, but that is what they did for 15-year-old Noah. Noah has had a passion for the U.S. Air Force and fighter jets since the day he watched his first Air Force documentary. Since then, he has watched hours of Air Force and fighter jet documentaries and he has dreams of one day serving in the Air Force.

Learning more about F-16s and fighter jets is what helps him to pass the time when he’s unable to do activities that other kids his age can do. Noah was born prematurely and spent 29 weeks in the Pediatric ICU, has been sedated over 75 times and has had over 15,000 breathing treatments. When Noah qualified for a wish, it took no time for him to exclaim, “I want to fly in an F-16!” Noah’s mom agreed by saying, “This would be Noah’s flight of freedom. Freedom from all of his doctors’ visits and treatments.”

The wish planning began when our Make-A-Wish South Dakota & Montana chapter engaged the 114th Fighter Wing Air National Guard base at Joe Foss Field.

Noah’s wish day. He wrote up an itinerary, arranged for civilians to be on the base and briefed the airmen on base before the wish day. This coordination was no small feat, but the airmen were more than willing to spend a day making Noah’s wish come true in the biggest way possible.

LtCol Noble customized a flight suit for Noah with his name embroidered on it. Noah toured the base, with airmen stationed at each stop who had prepared to educate him on their job. They were impressed with the knowledge that Noah already had from all the documentaries he had watched. Around lunchtime, Noah’s favorite food of pizza was delivered to the entrance of the base and carried to the lunchroom for all to enjoy together.

It was then time for Noah to suit up in his G-suit and helmet and head over to

the briefing room where Noah would learn how to enter the F-16, how to communicate with other pilots on the radio and how to make sure he was buckled in safely. You could feel the excitement building as LtCol Noble, Noah, Noah’s family and some of the airmen marched outside toward a line of F-16s.

Noah boarded the aircraft, and his brother used his newly-learned hand signals to usher the plane down the runway. LtCol Noble and Noah taxied in the F-16 and parked on the other end of the base.

Meanwhile, multiple F-16s took off to do an air show for Noah. Another group of airmen were instructed to give Noah’s family a ride to where Noah would exit the plane. Every person on base knew exactly where they needed to be without missing a beat.

As Noah carefully exited the F-16, he looked up and saw that every single person on the base had lined up along the building and they began to applaud him while others saluted him. A huge smile spread across Noah’s face as he received

high fives and handshakes from those near him, and tears rolled down his mom’s face. It was an incredible moment to watch the men and women who bravely serve our country applaud Noah, who had endured an intense medical journey in his fifteen years.

LtCol Noble and the rest of the airmen on base concluded Noah’s wish day with a naming ceremony where he was presented with a plaque, a United States flag and other gifts from the 114th Fighter Wing Air National Guard base. They treated Noah’s wish day as if they were on a mission to make sure that his wish day was perfect and that this young man had the time of his life. Noah and his family were taken care of every step of the way, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to watch these men and women serve their country in such a unique way.

According to Noah’s mom, he has spoken of his wish every day since! She said, “I can tell you that Noah’s entire wish day was way beyond our expectations, and he tells people that it was the best day of his life so far!”

Noah’s wish will forever leave an impact on him and his family.

Koen’s Wish: Teach Kids About Farming

Winner of the Wish Innovation Award by Make-A-Wish America Koen, a 7-year-old from rural South Dakota, has a passion for farming that he wants to share with the world. If it weren’t for this outgoing young boy’s respiratory disorder, he would spend all his time on the farm. The time he can spend outside with his tractors and animals is limited because dust in the air has potential to aggravate his symptoms.

Koen has had quite the medical journey with his condition, which has included hospital stays, a lot of testing and even more pokes. His current treatments require regular doctor visits for shots and testing. He also does daily treatments at home with a nebulizer and shaker vest.

Despite all this, Koen doesn’t let his condition get him down.

When he is able to go outside, he carries a backpack with special medical equipment to help him in case something should happen while he is outside. He keeps himself occupied during his daily treatments by playing games and watching his favorite tv shows.

Koen even has a talent for playing the piano.

When Koen found out that he could have any wish – a trip, a shopping spree, a chance to meet someone famous, he took his time to contemplate what the perfect wish would be. Finally, one day while he was receiving one of his monthly shots, his wish came to him! He was on his way home with his mom; he was tired and sore from the stressful day at the hospital. He decided that other kids shouldn’t have to feel the way he did. Koen wished to transform the waiting room experience for kids at Avera Medical Group Pediatric Specialists Sioux Falls. Koen was going to teach other kids about farming and provide them a little escape from the hospital environment.

Koen’s family shares his compassion for kids like him.

“Hospitalized kids deserve some cheer, and a piece of unexpected kindness might lift their spirits,” said Wish Mom Shanda.

Once word got out about Koen’s wish, it grew bigger than anyone could have anticipated because so many people wanted to help! Tractor Supply Foundation stepped in with a significant donation of $25,000 to help transform the waiting room into Koen’s Farm. This incredible makeover will touch the lives of hundreds of kids who pass through this area on their medical journey. With the help of volunteers, donors, business partners and others, the big reveal happened on World Wish Day, April 29!

Koen’s Farm includes farm-themed videos, engaging activities and farm safety lessons. “I want to take kids’ minds off of it, and I want them to feel better,” Koen said. Koen’s wish was uniquely created to follow kids like him through their hospital journey. In the waiting room, kids can learn more about farming through an interactive display and a tractor that is attached to the wall. They will receive a coloring activity book that was designed by Koen and crayons during their visit. After their visit, kids will also get to choose from a treasure chest filled with tractor toys that were donated by Tractor Supply Company to take home with them.

Before Koen’s wish came true, his parents had not fully understood the impact hospital days had on their son, but the ability to design his very own farm gave him hope and joy! He customized the animals at Koen’s Farm to match the animals on his family farm, along with a red cabbed tractor just like his dad’s.

In addition to Tractor Supply Company Foundation’s involvement, Koen’s wish was made possible by several local

generous donors, each with a strong connection to Make-A-Wish and Avera. First, Jeff and Julie (Norton) Lautt. Julie is the CFO for Avera, and Jeff is the President of POET. Second, Kathleen Kunkel and her daughters Megan, Katie and Carly, in loving memory of their husband and father Shawn. Kathleen is Mission Formation Consultant for Avera. Third, the Ty Eschenbaum Foundation—In Honor of Autumn. Ty is a wish alumnus, having received his wish to go to Disney World in 2004. During his battle with cancer while in high school, Ty received his medical care at Avera and today serves on Avera’s Rural Cancer Advisory Committee.

Many other generous corporate partners stepped up to bring Koen’s wish to life, working directly with Koen through the planning and design phases of his wish. The design of Koen’s wish was created by HenkinSchultz of Sioux Falls, Nanonation of Lincoln, NE, and Avera. The other groups that partnered to make his wish come true were Journey Construction of Sioux Falls, Thompson Electric of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Interiors, Elo Touch Solutions, Dell Computers, Peerless-AV and Sisson Printing of Sioux Falls. Volunteers JoAnn McHugh, Mary Jacobs and Gerald Schied helped to pull everything together for Koen’s wish, and Marlee Hayes used her photography skills to capture the special moments.

The 9th annual Walk For Wishes held virtually on May 22 with the help of our partners at KOTA/KEVN (Gray Television) was a success, raising nearly $48,000 while sharing impactful wish stories and bringing awareness of our mission across our chapter.

We are hopeful that we will once again hold a live event in the Black Hills on August 27, 2022 at Main Street Square in Rapid City, SD as well as retain a virtual participation option to allow everyone the opportunity to help grant transformational wishes regardless of your location. Thank you to everyone who participated in our 21st Annual Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament at the Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls! The event saw 25 golf teams who enjoyed beautiful summer weather and friendly competition. We hosted an Evening of Inspiration program and auction, featuring a variety of donated items from community businesses and individuals. Thanks to the generous support of many, a record-breaking $191,831 was raised to grant wishes for children with critical illnesses.

“Your Cans. Their Wish.”

Gerald Schied’s Story

Wish granter Gerald Schied has made it his mission to raise money through aluminum can sales to support life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. He started collecting scrap metal and aluminum cans for personal reasons; however, as his collection of metals grew, he wanted to make a greater impact.

Gerald contemplated what to do with his growing can collection. One commercial sparked Schied’s interest: “I kept seeing Make-A-Wish commercials on TV and newspapers, something was drawing me in there. I looked at my son and said: ‘Why don’t we just haul them in and have them make the check out to Make-A-Wish?”

What started as a small operation with his son has quickly snowballed into an impactful initiative. Today, Gerald has a network of 250 people including friends, acquaintances, and community members who collect aluminum cans and other scrap metal—all in support of Make-A-Wish South Dakota & Montana. “Your Cans. Their Wish.” That is the simple message displayed on his pickup truck.

With the increase in can suppliers, Gerald had to optimize his system—he ordered storage totes, built a can crusher and scheduled can pickups into his calendar. Gerald can store about 9,000 cans in each of his 131 storage totes and maintains a multifaceted can pick up schedule.

Gerald’s most recent collection of cans was collected over the past three years, and as his storage totes filled, he decided it was time to start hauling the cans to the recycling plant. After multiple trips to the plant, the final count was tallied: one million cans! The massive can collection resulted in a $40,000 check to Make-A-Wish South Dakota & Montana, adding to his previous donation of $65,000. Through the years, Gerald has donated over $100,000 to help Make-A-Wish South Dakota & Montana grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

We are incredibly grateful for Gerald’s commitment to our mission of granting wishes for children with critical illnesses. His generosity with his time and resources has made an impact on our Make-A-Wish community.

Through the years, Gerald has donated over $100,000 to help Make-A-Wish South Dakota & Montana grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
