Metabolic acidosis is a condition in which the body produces excessive amounts of acid or does not effectively eliminate acids, leading to an increase in blood acidity.

INDICATIONS

SODIMED is a basic (alkaline) compound that acts by neutralizing excess acid in the blood and restoring the blood’s normal pH. Injection of Sodium Bicarbonate can be an effective treatment for acute metabolic acidosis in farm animals, as it rapidly increases blood bicarbonate levels and corrects the acid-base balance.

DOSAGE

Injected intravenously.

In cattle and horses, 200 to 300 mL of 8.4% solution may be given undiluted by rapid infusion using a needle and syringe.

Sodium Bicarbonate 8.4% solution is often added to other intravenous fluids for the less urgent forms of metabolic acidosis.

The amount of bicarbonate to be given over a 4 to 8 hour period is approximately 2 to 5 m Eq per kg of body weight (1-2.5 mL/ lb body weight) depending upon the severity of the acidosis as judged by the lowering of total CO2 content, blood pH and clinical condition of the animal.

TILOMED-E 30% use for the treatment of respiratory infections in cattle and sheep associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella spp. and other susceptible micro-organisms, and for the treatment of ovine mastitis associated with Staphylococcus aureus and Mycoplasma spp. Additional indications include the treatment of interdigital necrobacillosis in cattle (bovine pododermatitis, foul in the foot) and ovine footrot.

DOSAGE

For subcutaneous injection:

Cattle – pneumonia: 1 ml per 30 kg bodyweight (10 mg/kg).

Cattle – interdigital necrobacillosis: 0.5 ml per 30 kg bodyweight (5 mg/kg).

Sheep – pneumonia and mastitis: 1 ml per 30 kg bodyweight (10 mg/kg).

Sheep – footrot: 0.5 ml per 30 kg bodyweight (5 mg/kg).

Note: Exercise extreme caution and take appropriate measures to avoid accidental self-injection, since injection of this drug in humans can be fatal!
