l semble inutile aujourd’hui d’évoquer l’intégration en parlant des Cap-Verdiens du Luxembourg. Beaucoup sont arrivés dès les années 60, à l’époque où le Cap-Vert était encore une colonie portugaise, la plus jeune génération est née ici et parmi leurs parents, de nombreux sont naturalisés. Les 10, 11 et 12 mai sera d’ailleurs organisé un week-end culturel en hommage aux plus anciens Cap-Verdiens du Luxembourg. Nelson Costa Brito, l’un des organisateurs, s’est lui installé ici il y a 12 ans, après l’obtention de sa licence en sciences politiques, en Angleterre. « Dès que je suis arrivé, je me suis senti comme chez moi. Les gens sont ouverts et il y a des possibilités pour tout le monde. C’est un élément clé pour les CapVerdiens. On aime le travail, on considère que c’est essentiel. C’est ce que j’essaie de faire passer aussi aux plus jeunes : il faut étudier, ne pas compter ses efforts, car les opportunités sont là pour tous et il faut en profiter. » Persuadé qu’il ne faut jamais

cesser de s’améliorer, Nelson Costa Brito est actuellement lui-même étudiant en master de gestion fiscale. Il est également député adjoint à la Chambre des députés du Cap-Vert pour le cercle de l’Europe, où il représente le MPD (Mouvement pour la démocratie). Tout naturellement, il s’intéresse de près à la vie politique au Luxembourg. « Ceux qui sont les plus proches des gens et de leurs préoccupations premières, ce sont les élus locaux. C’est pour cela que les gens qui vivent ici et qui peuvent voter doivent le faire. Il est primordial de participer à la vie politique, sociale, économique et culturelle. On n’oublie pas pour autant ses racines, elles restent avec nous, comme une richesse supplémentaire. »

A strong work ethic, the sense of sharing and the human warmth of their country mean a lot to Cape Verdeans. t seems needless today to evoke integration when talking about the Cap Verdeans of Luxembourg. Most of them came in the 1960’s at a time when Cape Verde was still a Portuguese colony, those from the youngest generation were born here and many of their parents are naturalised. The cultural weekend taking place the 10, 11 and 12 May and honouring the eldest Cape Verdeans in Luxembourg will somehow also mark how communities best live together. One of the event’s organisers is Nelson Costa Brito. He moved here 12 years ago after obtaining his bachelor’s degree in political science, in England. “As soon as I arrived I felt at home. People are open and there are possibilities for everyone. That’s a key element to Cap Verdeans. We like to work; it’s essential to us. I try to pass that on to the youngsters too: studying is vital, don’t spare your efforts because the opportunities are there and they must be seized.” Convinced that it’s always possible to improve, Nelson Costa Brito himself is currently studying for his master degree in Tax Management. He is also a member of the Chamber of deputies in Cape Verde representing Europe for the MPD (Movement for Democracy) party.
