“Prioritizes leisure, exemplifies elegance”

INTRODUCING

Picture this: a Caribbean sunrise, the soft light filtering through palm fronds, casting long shadows across a trio of crystalline lakes. It’s here, in the quiet embrace of New Providence’s natural splendor, that Windsor Lakes is writing a new chapter in the ever-evolving narrative of luxury living. Nestled comfortably between the posh enclaves of Albany Resort and the quaint charm of Adelaide Village, Windsor Lakes is more than just a real estate development; it’s a testament to the growing allure of eco-conscious opulence.

A Symphony of Sustainability

Windsor Lakes is the brainchild of visionary developers who have dared to imagine a community where sustainability isn’t just an add-on, but a foundational principle. The development sprawls over 65 verdant acres, a meticulous patchwork of modern homes and untouched greenery that seems to hum with the promise of a balanced existence. Here, solar panels glisten in the sun, rainwater harvesting systems murmur with quiet efficiency, and energyefficient materials compose a silent ode to the future of residential architecture.

In a world increasingly conscious of its environmental debt, Windsor Lakes emerges as a sanctuary for those who believe that luxury need not come at the earth’s expense. Its goal was to create a space where modern comforts and natural beauty not only coexist but enhance each other. It's not just about building homes; it's about fostering a new way of living.

The Art of Living Well

Step into Windsor Lakes, and the first thing that strikes you is the artful juxtaposition of nature and design. The Clubhouse stands as the community’s heart, a modernist structure whose clean lines and airy spaces mirror the lakes it overlooks. Inside, residents find respite in a resort-style pool, surrounded by elegantly appointed cabanas that invite languid afternoons of leisure. The fitness center, with its state-of-the-art equipment, and versatile meeting spaces, offers both wellness and connectivity, echoing the community’s dual focus on personal health and social engagement.

Outside, the scene is equally compelling. Walking trails, thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, wind through the community, their paths illuminated by eco-friendly lighting that casts a soft, golden glow come evening. These trails offer more than just a scenic route; they provide a living gallery of Bahamian flora and fauna, where residents can pause and

Windsor Lakes Adelaide Road, New Providence

reconnect with the natural world. These spaces were designed to be more than just beautiful; they’re meant to be lived in, experienced, and enjoyed.

For those with a competitive streak, the community’s tennis, pickleball, padel, and basketball courts are a sporting delight, inviting residents to partake in friendly matches and vigorous exercise. The Windsor Dog Park and a thoughtfully crafted children’s playground add layers to the community’s familyfriendly appeal, making it a welcoming haven for all ages.

Homes with Heart

The residences at Windsor Lakes are where the narrative of luxury truly unfolds. Each of the 173 homesites, including 136 single-family and 37 multifamily lots, is a masterpiece of modern design, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings. Lots here are priced from $225,000, each offering panoramic views of the lakes and access to the community’s rich collection of amenities.

Inside, the homes speak the language of understated elegance. Open-plan layouts merge with expansive windows, allowing the Bahamian light to dance through the interiors. Kitchens equipped with the latest in energy-efficient technology and spa-like bathrooms form the backdrop of daily life, each detail a nod to the harmonious blend of form and

function. These homes were meant to feel like sanctuaries, places where you can feel connected to both luxury and nature.

A Modern Sanctuary

In Windsor Lakes, safety and exclusivity are more than promises; they are practiced realities. The community’s 24-hour manned security ensures peace of mind, while its strategic location offers both the quietude of a retreat and the convenience of proximity to Nassau’s vibrant city center, pristine beaches, and world-renowned golf courses. Windsor Lakes is envisioned as a place where every day is an invitation to enjoy the finer things in life, set against a backdrop of natural beauty.

An Invitation to Reflect

The serene expanse of a lake has long been a symbol of reflection, a natural mirror where sky and water converge, inviting the soul to find peace. Windsor Lakes captures this essence and invites you to discover a life where reflection and retreat are at the heart of luxury living. It’s a place where the serene beauty of the lakes provides a backdrop for everyday life, encouraging a deeper connection with nature and oneself. For those seeking a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle, Windsor Lakes offers a unique opportunity to live in harmony with both the natural world and modern comforts.

Island Care

Navigating the Health Care Landscape in the Caribbean

In the sun-drenched Bahamas, where the horizon melts into turquoise waters and gentle waves kiss sandy shores, the healthcare system emerges as a critical lifeline amidst the island’s paradisiacal allure. Beyond the vistas that captivate visitors lies a sophisticated blend of public and private healthcare services, ensuring that the wellness of both residents and guests is diligently attended to in this island haven.

Balancing Public and Private: The Dual Healthcare System

The Bahamian healthcare system is a delicate dance between public duty and private innovation. The Ministry of Health orchestrates a network of clinics and hospitals that dot the archipelago, offering essential medical services from the bustling capital of Nassau to the serene out islands. At the helm of this public effort is Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), the country’s primary referral and teaching institution, where the rhythm of care is relentless, echoing the pulse of the nation itself.

In contrast, the private healthcare sector thrives as a dynamic counterpart. Facilities such as Doctors Hospital in Nassau are equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed by a cadre of highly trained professionals, offering a sanctuary of choice and

quality for those in need. This duality provides a mosaic of healthcare options, catering to the local population’s diverse needs and the demands of international visitors seeking medical assurance in paradise.

Princess Margaret Hospital: The Pillar of Public Health

In the heart of Nassau, amidst the city’s vibrant hum, Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) stands as a testament to the Bahamian spirit of resilience and care. As the largest hospital in The Bahamas, PMH shoulders the weight of a nation’s health, providing comprehensive services from emergency care to intricate surgeries. It also serves as an academic beacon, training the next generation of medical professionals.

Dr. Sarah Thompson, a seasoned physician at PMH, speaks with a blend of pride and pragmatism, “Our mission here is to provide compassionate care under sometimes challenging conditions. Every patient’s story matters, and we are here to listen and to heal.” Her words reflect the ethos of PMH, where every effort is made to evolve and adapt, despite the pressures of a growing population and occasional natural calamities.

Navigating Healthcare in Paradise

In The Bahamas, healthcare is more than just a system; it is a vital thread woven into the fabric of island life. From the bustling corridors of Nassau’s hospitals to the serene clinics in the out islands, the Bahamian healthcare landscape reflects a commitment to providing quality care amidst the unique challenges of a dispersed geography. As The Bahamas continues to evolve, its healthcare system remains steadfast, striving to meet the needs of its residents and visitors, ensuring that paradise remains a place of well-being for all.

The Bahamas, with its vibrant culture, exquisite cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes, has become a sought-after destination for those looking to blend luxury with serenity. Whether you’re considering a tropical escape or a permanent residence, navigating the legal intricacies of making The Bahamas your home is paramount. Here’s a comprehensive guide to understanding the legal aspects of establishing your new life in this island paradise.

1. Residency and Citizenship: Pathways to Paradise

Residency Options: The Bahamas offers several residency options, ranging from annual residency permits to permanent residency for those making significant investments in the country. The most common routes include:

• Annual Residency Permit: Available to individuals who own property in The Bahamas. This permit is renewable annually and ideal for those who wish to reside in The Bahamas seasonally.

• Permanent Residency: Granted to those investing a minimum of $750,000 in Bahamian real estate. Permanent residency provides more stability and can be a gateway to full citizenship.

Economic Permanent Residency (EPR): For high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) investing $1.5 million or more in real estate, the EPR provides an expedited path, often processed within 21 days.

Citizenship: While residency is relatively straightforward, citizenship in The Bahamas is more complex and generally requires longterm residence and proof of strong ties to the community.

2. Real Estate Acquisition: Finding Your Island Haven

Property Types: From luxurious beachfront villas to secluded private islands, the Bahamian real estate market caters to diverse tastes. The process for purchasing property is transparent and straightforward, governed by the International Persons Landholding Act.

Legal Requirements:

• Title Search: Conducting a thorough title search is crucial to ensure there are no encumbrances on the property.

• Deed of Conveyance: This document legally transfers ownership from the seller to the buyer.

• Stamp Duty and VAT: Buyers must pay stamp duty and value-added tax (VAT) on the property, typically split between the buyer and seller unless otherwise agreed.

Financing: Foreign nationals can secure mortgages from local banks, though it’s often recommended to arrange financing prior to entering the market to streamline the purchasing process.

3. Taxation: Enjoying Financial Advantages

No Income or Capital Gains Tax: One of the most attractive aspects of living in The Bahamas is the absence of personal income, inheritance, and capital gains taxes. This tax-friendly environment is a significant draw for retirees and investors alike.

Property Tax: Property taxes are applied annually, with rates varying based on the property’s assessed value. Primary residences are taxed at a lower rate, making it advantageous for those intending to reside full-time.

Import Duties: Be mindful of import duties on personal belongings and luxury items, which can be substantial. Proper planning can mitigate these costs.

4. Legal Representation: Navigating the Process Smoothly

Choosing a Real Estate Advisor: Hiring a real estate agent in the Bahamas provides invaluable expertise in navigating local property laws, market trends, and zoning regulations. They can access exclusive listings, negotiate the best price, and handle the complexities of foreign transactions. With their guidance, you'll avoid costly mistakes, save time, and ensure a smooth buying process for your investment.

Choosing a Local Attorney: Retaining a reputable Bahamian attorney is essential for navigating the legal landscape. They will assist with due diligence, contract negotiation, and ensuring compliance with local laws.

Closing the Deal: The closing process involves several steps, including the preparation of legal documents, payment of applicable taxes, and the final transfer of property. An attorney ensures that all legal requirements are met and that your interests are protected throughout the transaction.

5. Community Integration: Embracing Bahamian Culture

Cultural Considerations: Living in The Bahamas means becoming part of a close-knit community with deep-rooted traditions. Embracing local customs and contributing to community life can enhance your integration and enjoyment of island living.

Networking Opportunities: Joining local clubs, participating in events, and engaging with community organizations can provide valuable connections and enrich your Bahamian experience.

6. Living the Dream: Final Thoughts

Transitioning to life in The Bahamas offers a unique blend of tranquility and luxury. Understanding the legal nuances is key to a smooth relocation and ensuring that your investment and lifestyle align with the country’s regulations. By following these guidelines and seeking expert advice, you can confidently embark on your journey to making The Bahamas your home.

The Bahamas is not only known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture but also for its unique and delectable cuisine. The Bahamian cuisine is a tantalizing blend of African, British, Spanish, and West Indian influences, creating a culinary experience that is as diverse as the islands themselves. Let’s embark on a flavorful journey to discover the mouthwatering delights that make up the rich tapestry of Bahamian cuisine.

Seafood Extravaganza

With an abundance of pristine waters, it comes as no surprise that seafood features prominently in Bahamian dishes. Conch is the undisputed star of Bahamian seafood cuisine. This marine mollusk is prepared in various ways, including cracked conch, conch salad, and conch fritters. Cracked conch involves tenderizing the meat before battering and frying it to perfection. The conch salad is a refreshing concoction of diced conch, peppers, onions, tomatoes, and citrus juices, offering a delightful burst of flavors.

Lobster is another delicacy that graces Bahamian tables, particularly during lobster season that runs from August 1st through March 31st. Grilled, battered or served in butter sauce, Bahamian lobster is a musttry for seafood enthusiasts.

Savoring Soulful Flavors

Bahamian cuisine showcases an array of soulful infused soups with rich flavors. The “Souse” is a traditional dish made with chicken, sheep tongue, or pig feet, and vegetables like lime, onions, and potatoes. This dish is often enjoyed on weekends or special occasions, offering a taste of true Bahamian comfort food.

Mouthwatering Bahamian Desserts

A Day in The Bahamas with Chef Jay:

A Gastronomic Odyssey

The Bahamas, where the rhythm of life sways to the cadence of the sea and the sun’s embrace rivals the warmth of its people’s hospitality, is a haven of vibrant culture and culinary celebration. Among the myriad ways to explore this heaven on earth, none is more immersive than through its food. Leading us on this culinary odyssey is Joel Johnson—known to many as Chef Jay. At just 34 years old, Chef Jay has devoted nearly half his life to mastering the art of Bahamian cuisine. Today, he invites us to savor the island’s very soul through a day of unforgettable dishes.

Our journey begins with the dawn, the air still cool from the night, and the promise of a new day palpable. For breakfast, Chef Jay offers a traditional spread that captures the heart of Bahamian mornings.

The Morning Table

The centerpiece is Stew Fish, a dish as comforting as a mother’s embrace. Fresh fish fillets are simmered to tenderness with onions, tomatoes, and potatoes in a savory broth spiced with thyme and allspice. “Stew Fish is what you need to start

your day right,” Chef Jay muses, ladling the rich stew into bowls. It’s served with Johnny Cake, a dense, slightly sweet Bahamian cornbread perfect for soaking up the stew’s essence. The cake’s crumbly texture contrasts beautifully with the velvety broth, creating a harmony that speaks to the soul.

Alongside, we find Fire Engine—a robust dish of corned beef sautéed with onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. Served over rice or grits, it’s a meal that fuels the body and stirs the spirit. “It’s named after the fire engines because of its bold flavors and the rush of energy it gives you,” Chef Jay explains, a twinkle in his eye.

The Noon Feast

As the sun ascends, the morning’s gentle warmth evolves into the intense midday heat, signaling time for lunch. Here, the sea’s bounty takes center stage, beginning with Cracked Conch, a Bahamian delicacy. The conch—a sea snail whose tender flesh is pounded, battered, and deep-fried to golden perfection—is the star. Chef Jay’s hands move deftly, transforming raw conch into crisp, succulent

Roasted pumpkin stuffed with shitake mushrooms and spinach

Grouper, w/ risotto, asparagus & a lemon beurre blanc

Tuna tartar

bites. “Tenderness is key,” he notes, his focus unwavering. The conch is served with Peas and Rice, a dish where pigeon peas, rice, and a medley of spices come together in a dance of flavors that is both hearty and fragrant.

To complement, there’s Conch Salad, a dish as refreshing as the trade winds. Diced conch mingles with tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and lime juice, the tangy marinade brightening each bite. “It’s like ceviche, but with our own Bahamian twist,” Chef Jay says, his voice carrying the pride of generations past.

Afternoon Delights

The afternoon sun casts long shadows, and the desire for a light snack becomes undeniable. Enter Bahamian Fritters—crispy, golden spheres made from a batter of flour, baking powder, and finely chopped conch or vegetables, deep-fried until irresistibly crunchy. “They’re perfect for a beachside snack,” Chef Jay suggests, handing over a basket of the hot, savory morsels.

For those with a sweet tooth, Benny Cake offers a simple yet delightful treat. Made from sesame seeds and sugar, this candy-like brittle crunches with each bite, a staple at local markets and festivals. “It’s a taste of Bahamian simplicity,” Chef Jay reflects, “sweet and straightforward.”

The Evening Extravaganza

As dusk descends, painting the sky in hues of pink and gold, dinner becomes a celebration of bold, rich flavors. Chef Jay presents Nassau Grouper, the pride of Bahamian cuisine. The fish, fresh from the surrounding waters, is either filleted and panseared or fried whole, seasoned with a triad of

salt, goat pepper, and lime. “Nassau Grouper is the steak of the ocean,” he declares, the fish’s mild yet distinctive flavor testament to its reputation. It’s paired with Crab and Rice, a dish that utilizes the fresh bounty of Andros Crab. The crab’s essence infuses the rice, creating a complex and delectable symphony of tastes.

The meal is complemented by Bahamian Macaroni, which, while eminiscent of American mac and cheese, carries the distinct Bahamian hallmark of added onions, celery, and peppers. “We bake it until it’s firm with a crust of golden cheese on top,” Chef Jay explains, “that’s my favorite part.” The dish, rich and flavorful, offers comfort in every bite.

A Sweet Conclusion

Night falls, and with it, the anticipation of dessert. Chef Jay’s selection is Guava Duff, a Bahamian delicacy where pureed fresh guava is rolled in a cake-like dough, then drenched in a decadent rum sauce. “Even if you don’t have a sweet tooth, Guava Duff is irresistible,” Chef Jay admits. The light, sweet texture of the duff, combined with the bold flavors of guava and rum, offers a sublime finale to the day’s culinary journey.

From Tradition to Transformation: Exploring Bahamian Art

The contemporary spectrum of Bahamian art, now bursting with unexpected vitality, has transcended the once-predictable confines of landscape painting and idyllic coastal scenes, captivating both local enthusiasts and international audiences. Over the past two decades, Bahamian art has undergone a profound metamorphosis, adopting a contemporary and critical sensibility that articulates a more nuanced and dynamic vision of Bahamian visual expression.

This transformation, a vibrant and variegated weave of styles and mediums, offers a comprehensive and compelling portrait of Bahamian art today. To explore this rich expanse, we will journey through three distinct phases: the foundational Bahamian Master Artists, the avant-garde Contemporary Wave, and the innovative New Generation.

Bahamian Master Artists: Pioneers and Pillars

Bahamian art history is a journey from the Lucayan artifacts to the 19th and 20th-century photography and paintings by American and European artists. Yet, the narrative of “Bahamian” art often begins with the luminaries collectively termed our “Master Artists.” These figures—Brent Malone, Amos Ferguson, John Beadle, Jackson Burnside, Kendall Hanna, Stan Burnside, Maxwell Taylor, Antonius Roberts, Eddie Minnis, and John Cox—are the architects of our art heritage. Their works, spanning neo-impressionism, printmaking, abstract expressionism, sculpture, and mixed media, have graced galleries worldwide and enriched prestigious collections.

Among them, the late Amos Ferguson’s oeuvre stands out, with his pieces making notable appearances at auctions. To immerse oneself in the legacy of these Bahamian stalwarts, one may explore their works at Mestre Projects, CAB Art Gallery and Studio, and TERN Gallery. Despite the notable absence of female representation, Kendra Frorup has been acknowledged as part of this revered cadre, adding a crucial dimension to this artistic lineage.

The Contemporary Wave: A Conceptual Renaissance

The contemporary wave of Bahamian art, flourishing from the 1980s to the early 2000s, marks a departure from the traditional landscape iconography. This post-independence era witnessed the emergence of artists like Clive Stuart, Dionne Benjamin-Smith, and Joylon Smith, whose practices drew inspiration from earlier figures like Jackson and Stan Burnside, and the late John Beadle. Their work, characterized by a rigorous aesthetic, heralded a conceptual renaissance in Bahamian art.

This period also saw the rise of artists such as Blue Curry, Heino Schmid, Lillian Blades, Michael Edwards, John Cox, and Jason Bennett. Their works, often rooted in painting, printmaking, and sculpture, garnered international acclaim and found homes in prestigious museums. Collectors and enthusiasts can explore their pieces at TERN Gallery and CAB Art Gallery and Studio, where their creative journeys continue to inspire and challenge the conventions of Bahamian art.

The New Generation: Expanding Horizons

In this latest chapter, the new generation of Bahamian artists has garnered critical acclaim, transcending geographical boundaries while maintaining a profound connection to their Bahamian roots. Artists like Lavar Munroe, Tavares Strachan, April Bey, Anina Major, and Gio Swaby navigate the complex interplay of identity and contemporary art, with their works acquired by notable museums and galleries across the United States and The Bahamas. Tavares Strachan’s affiliation with Mestre Projects and the representation of April Bey and Anina Major by TERN Gallery highlight their international stature and the dynamic nature of Bahamian art.

The contemporary giants—Cydne Jasmin Coleby,

Tessa Whitehead, Drew Weech, Steven Schmid, KEEYA, Kachelle Knowles, and Keith Thompson— continue to redefine Bahamian art through their personal narratives and innovative approaches. Their exploration of “Bahamian-ness,” infused with individual experiences and cultural references, reflects the evolving artistic landscape of The Bahamas.

Meanwhile, local mainstays such as Preston Hanna, June Collie, and Navarro Newton blend genres and mediums, anchoring Bahamian art in its locale while expanding its horizons. Emerging talents like Elkino Dames, Dyah Neilson, Alia Knowles, and Reagan Kemp further underscore the expansiveness of Bahamian visual culture, each contributing to the intricate mosaic that defines our artistic identity.

Collecting Bahamian Art: A Personal Journey

For those seeking to collect Bahamian art, the key lies in personal resonance—what moves you, what speaks to your sensibilities. Allow your instinct to guide you, curating your space around the art that captivates you. The galleries mentioned herein—each a bastion of Bahamian art—serve not only as custodians of this vibrant tradition but as portals to deeper engagement with the artists and their works. In essence, Bahamian art today is a testament to the island’s rich cultural heritage and its dynamic evolution. From the revered masters to the contemporary innovators and the emerging voices, Bahamian art offers a kaleidoscope of expressions that both honor tradition and embrace the future.

“I enjoy the enviroment in which I live and many of my paintings are directly influenced by it. I love recreating my island Paradise on canvas.”

In the predawn hours of Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, as the rest of the world sleeps, Nassau awakens to the exhilarating rhythms of Junkanoo. This vibrant celebration, a spectacle of color and sound, transforms the city into a pulsating carnival of joy and tradition. The streets become a living tapestry woven with the threads of Bahamian heritage, resilience, and artistry, brought to life through the thunderous beat of goatskin drums, the jangle of cowbells, and the piercing wail of whistles.

The genesis of Junkanoo, much like the vivid patterns of its costumes, is shrouded in mystery, its roots extending deep into the island’s history. Theories about its origin abound, yet all converge on the era of slavery, a time when Bahamian slaves, given a brief respite during the Christmas season, found solace and expression in music and dance. These moments of freedom were celebrated with masquerades and revelry, birthing a tradition that has not only endured but evolved into the grand pageant we witness today.

Months before the festival, a quiet but fervent preparation grips the Bahamian communities.

In makeshift workshops and communal spaces, artisans, musicians, and dancers labor with meticulous care, crafting the elaborate costumes and floats that will dazzle under the midnight sky. Feathered headdresses are intricately assembled, their plumes dyed in hues that defy imagination; sequins and beads are stitched into patterns that tell stories of identity, history, and hope. These creations are not merely garments but symbols, imbued with the spirit and sweat of those who bear them.

As the clock strikes midnight, Nassau’s transformation is complete. The air, heavy with anticipation, explodes with the sounds of Junkanoo.

From the shadows emerge the “rushers,” members of the Junkanoo troupes, clad in costumes that shimmer like living rainbows. They surge forward, their movements synchronized to the primal rhythms that reverberate through the city’s heart. The energy is electric, and contagious, drawing spectators into the frenzy as they clap and cheer, swept away by the sheer exuberance of the performance.

THE PULSING HEART OF THE BAHAMAS

Each troupe, often numbering in the hundreds or even thousands, presents a thematic spectacle, a blend of music, dance, and visual art that competes for both glory and the adoration of the crowd. Themes range from historical narratives to contemporary social commentary, each performance a unique expression of creativity and cultural pride. The “Valley Boys” might evoke a tale of African heritage, while the “Saxons” could celebrate the vibrancy of island life. The competition is fierce, but it is the collective spirit of Junkanoo that shines brightest—a communal heartbeat that resonates with unity and passion.

Amid the cacophony and chaos, there are moments of profound clarity, where the essence of Junkanoo reveals itself. It is in the eyes of a young boy, his face painted in vivid colors, who looks up in awe at the grandeur before him; it is in the sweat-soaked brows of the drummers, lost in the trance of their relentless rhythms; it is in the weary but triumphant smiles of the dancers, their bodies moving in unison with the pulse of their heritage.

Junkanoo is more than a festival; it is a living, breathing embodiment of Bahamian identity, a testament to a people’s resilience and creativity. It encapsulates a history forged in hardship and transcended through celebration. As one seasoned participant eloquently put it, “Junkanoo is not just a parade, it’s a way of life.” This sentiment reverberates through the alleys and avenues of Nassau, echoing the enduring spirit of a people who have long found solace and strength in their cultural roots.

For those fortunate enough to witness this spectacle, the experience is nothing short of transformative. The pounding drums and shrill whistles do more than fill the air—they penetrate the soul, igniting a primal energy that transcends the boundaries of time and space. It is a moment of pure, unadulterated joy, a celebration of the human spirit that leaves an indelible mark on all who behold it.

In an era increasingly dominated by homogenized cultural experiences, where the unique often yields to the uniform, Junkanoo stands as a defiant reminder of the power of tradition. It is a vibrant affirmation of the Bahamian spirit, a celebration that refuses to be constrained by the shadows of its colonial past. Each year, as the city of Nassau thrums to the beat of Junkanoo, it reasserts the enduring strength and creativity of the Bahamian people, captivating and inspiring all who encounter its magic.

In the aftermath, as dawn breaks and the streets slowly return to their everyday rhythms, the echoes of Junkanoo linger in the air—a reminder of the night when Nassau danced to the heartbeat of its heritage, and a promise of the joy that will come again.

An Underwater Dive with André Musgrove

Underwater

Can you share how growing up in The Bahamas influenced your passion for underwater photography and shark diving?

Growing up in The Bahamas, I was surrounded by the ocean from a young age. My early experiences with spearfishing and freediving with my father instilled a deep connection with the marine environment. The vibrant underwater world and its inhabitants, including sharks, became a significant part of my life. This constant immersion in the ocean nurtured my passion for underwater photography. The stunning marine landscapes and the diversity of marine life I encountered inspired me to share these experiences through my camera, aiming to bring the beauty of the ocean to those who might not have the same access.

Your work brings you face-to-face with some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. What has been your most memorable experience with marine life so far?

One of my most memorable experiences was encountering a school of over 300 black sharks in a blue hole. To be surrounded by that amount of sharks at one time while freediving is a feeling that is hard to imitate.

Many people see sharks as dangerous, yet you regularly interact with them. How do you physically and mentally prepare for these encounters, and what do you think are the biggest misconceptions about sharks?

Physically, I ensure that I am in top shape to handle the demands of the physical exertion of freediving and the need to stay calm in potentially challenging situations. Mentally, I focus on understanding shark behavior and respecting their space. The biggest misconception about sharks is that they are mindless predators. In reality, they are crucial to marine ecosystems and often avoid humans if left undisturbed. Educating people about their roles and behavior can help change the negative perceptions surrounding them.

Underwater photography requires both technical skill and artistic vision. Can you walk us through your creative process when capturing these stunning images?

My creative process starts with scouting new locations to understand the lighting, visibility, and overall environment. I then conceptualize the shots based on these factors, focusing on composition and how the natural light interacts with the scene. During the shoot, I adapt to the changing conditions, utilizing ambient light to maintain a natural look. Post-production involves color correction and spot removal to ensure the final image best represents the underwater scene while staying true to the raw beauty. I don’t ever do any “Photoshopping” on my images.

The repetitious routine of pushing yourself beyond limits must have its strains. How do you balance the thrill of exploration and travel with rest?

Balancing exploration with rest is crucial. As a Sabbath-keeping follower of Jesus Christ, I don’t ever “work” on Saturdays no matter where I am in the world or what projects or jobs I'm working on. I use these hours to rest and recuperate. This has been one of my biggest life hacks that allows my body and mind to push hard during the week, sometimes spending over 6 hours in the water at a time nonstop. I make it a point to stick to this schedule/downtime between intense shooting periods to recover physically and mentally. Regular workouts and maintaining a healthy lifestyle also help me stay fit and resilient. Rest and recovery are essential to keep my creativity and energy levels high, allowing me to tackle new challenges with a refreshed perspective.

You’re an advocate for ocean conservation.

How do you use your platform to raise awareness about the issues facing our oceans today?

I use my photography and films to highlight the beauty of the ocean and its inhabitants, aiming to inspire viewers to take action. Through social media and collaborations with conservation organizations, I share stories and images that illustrate the urgent need to protect marine environments. By showing the impacts of human activity on the ocean, I hope to foster a greater sense of responsibility and encourage people to support conservation efforts.

With the increasing impact of climate change, what changes have you observed in the marine environments you frequent, and how does this affect your work?

Climate change has led to noticeable shifts in marine environments, such as coral bleaching and altered animal behavior. These changes can affect the visual aesthetics and biodiversity of the areas I photograph. It drives me to focus even more on capturing the beauty of these ecosystems before they change further. Additionally, it strengthens my resolve to advocate for ocean conservation through my work. Sadly, this can't happen fast enough because every few months now we are quickly losing coral reefs here in The Bahamas and it saddens me that the general public isn’t even aware of what is happening below the surface.

What role does freediving play in your underwater photography, and how does it differ from traditional scuba diving in terms of capturing your shots?

Freediving plays a crucial role in my underwater photography as it allows me to get close to subjects without the intrusion of bulky scuba equipment. The ability to hold my breath and move quietly and gracefully underwater helps in capturing more natural and intimate moments. Freediving also enables me to be more agile and responsive to the dynamic underwater environment, which is essential for creating compelling images. Most of the time my subjects are human freediving. Being able to free dive and shoot them is the best way to keep an open line of communication for us to make adjustments.

As someone who has been featured in international media like National Geographic and Discovery Channel, what advice would you give to aspiring underwater photographers and filmmakers?

My advice would be to focus on mastering your skills in the water, even without a camera in hand. Learning the ocean that you shoot, the animals you interact with, and seeing how they interact with each other. Being confident in as many water and underwater disciplines as possible will allow you to transfer those skills over when you pick up a camera. Your body is your greatest asset and taking care of it is what will allow you to push harder, and go faster to be able to capture things others won’t. Building a strong portfolio and network within the industry can also open opportunities. Most importantly, remain patient and persistent, as breakthroughs often come after overcoming numerous challenges.

Looking ahead, what are some of your upcoming projects or goals, and what do you hope to achieve in the next phase of your career?

In the coming years, I aim to explore top global locations for large marine wildlife to capture unique and compelling stories. One of my goals is to develop a project that blends underwater filmmaking with environmental advocacy, highlighting the impacts of climate change and emphasizing the importance of marine conservation. Additionally, I am beginning to enter the art world by offering Fine Art Underwater Photography Prints. I hope these pieces and future exhibitions will provide a platform to discuss oceanic issues with audiences who may not be divers, fostering awareness and inspiring positive change. I am committed to pushing the boundaries of my work, inspiring others through my images, and contributing to meaningful conservation efforts.
