4 Moves Into Ever Larger Facilities - Since 1986 Founding

ocated in Columbus, OH, Classic Solutions’ motto is, “Everything you need to keep your facility clean, safe and healthy.” Founded in 1986, the distributorship has enjoyed sustained growth throughout the years. “The past three years have been the best ever for the company,” said Classic Solutions President James Creps, during a recent interview with Maintenance Sales News at the company’s facility in Columbus. “My father (the late Jim Creps) founded our company with Kathy (Executive Vice President Kathleen Wiseman),” Creps said. “We started as a jan/san company. We are still considered that today. However, we also think of ourselves as a ‘facility solutions’ business, which we have tried to communicate with our name: Classic Solutions.” In addition to its jan/san product lines the company also offers warewash/laundry and chemical manufacturing services, as well as equipment repair. Because of the company’s growth, it made its fourth move, which was two years in the making, into a larger facility this past August.

the big boxes and online retailers. “It is important for customers to have someone who is accountable for a piece of equipment,” Creps said. While Creps thinks the often-used phrase “value-added” has become somewhat of a cliche, it is the service aspect that his company brings to the table that is a primary differentiator from online commerce. “There’s really not that much difference in price throughout our industry,” Creps said. “If we can keep prices in a fair range and offer a huge level of service, that is what will help us to continue to grow. Indeed, that is what has gotten us to the point we are now.” “Again, it all goes back to every employee, no matter what position he/she holds, totally buying in to the philosophy that the customer always comes first,” Creps said. “We make sure that when customers call, we can answer their questions,” Creps said. “If the customer service rep doesn’t have the answer, we will get an answer as quickly as possible.
“It all goes back to every employee, no matter what position he/she holds, totally buying in to the philosophy that the customer always comes first.” — Classic Solutions President James Creps
“Our customer service reps get to know customers. If a customer would rather have a phone call back, then we call back. If he/she wants an email or text, we do that as well. We make sure customers’ needs are covered, and when they call here they know that we have good people in those positions. We want customers to be confident that when they place an order it is going to be right, it is going to go to the right building and we are going to charge them the right price.” As testimony to the trust Classic Solutions has built with customers, many of them allow the distributor to monitor their inventories and actually place orders on their behalf. “We have a ton of inventory customers. For about 80 percent of them, we place the order and then send them a confirmation, so they know what we placed,” Creps said. “It is part of the trust we have earned over the years. We make sure to provide customers with a parlevel sheet of what they are using. “They know when they get items in, if something is out of whack versus the parlevel sheet, we didn’t do what we said. We provide them with that information ahead of time.” Inventory par levels are the minimum quantity of a given item that must always be in stock. When an item hits below par levels, an order should be placed to meet the par level.

BACK IN THE DAY
n the discussion about how Classic Solutions takes care of customers, Creps and Wiseman took a trip down memory lane to illustrate how the industry and the marketplace has changed, and to offer insights on how their company has kept ahead of the curve. “Thirty years ago, salespeople took orders personally, or orders were called in over the phone,” Wiseman said. “If the customer got the order in a week, that was great. Now, much more is expected. People want answers instantaneously, and a shorter time frame from when the request comes in to when it is fulfilled. “We have adapted our processes through the years in order to stay up with the industry and the world in which we live.”

Creps added: “Back in the day, when salespeople were out all the time, people would leave messages for them. Then, the next day, salespeople would get the messages, and then the next day, they would call back. Today, if you haven’t called a customer back within an hour, he/she will be calling you again.” In recent times, technology has also been a game-changer in all aspects of running a successful and efficient jan/san company. Technologies, such as computers, tablets and smart phones, are must-haves for modern-day salespeople to compete.
“All of our salespeople have iPads,” Creps said. “When they visit a customer’s facility, they have all that customer’s information right at their fingertips.” Along with pertinent information about a customer, laptops, tablets and smart phones can also be used as visual aids. “Back in the day, we all carried brochures. I’m a little old school sometimes, and I still like to go out with them,” Creps said. “However, if I’m calling on a millennial, he/she might want to see a video. If I’m talking about a piece of equipment, I will scroll through and show him/her a quick 30-second or a minute video. In a way, it is like a really inexpensive way of conducting a demo. “We used to give a customer a pamphlet on an auto scrubber and say, ‘Would you like to see a demo?’” Creps said by being able to show a short video, the salesperson can gauge the customer’s level of interest. After viewing the video, if the customer seems lukewarm to purchasing the item, then the salesperson will hold off on bringing somebody in with the machine to conduct a fullblown demonstration, thus saving time and money. Also, entered on the iPads is Classic Solutions’ inventory. When a salesperson enters a customer’s order, it is instantly processed. Furthermore, the salesperson or the customer service rep processing the order can instantly know how much of a particular product is on-hand in the company’s warehouse. “Having iPads has changed everything,” Creps said. “If a customer wants 30 of a particular item, I can log on and see, ‘Hey, we’ve got 100 in stock, so we’re good.’ A lot of the guys carry laptops. They can give all their quotes and order reviews sitting in a car somewhere, as well as at a desk.” When it comes to working hard, nothing comes close to While ordering from electronic the way Trojan floor batteries outperform the competition. devices is popular these days, Classic Solutions tries to make it For over 90 years, Trojan Battery’s time-tested, Made in the USA easy for customers to place orline of extraordinary batteries have enhanced the way people live, ders any way they desire. work and play around the world. “If a person calls here, the phone will be answered by a live person, and we will never put trojanbattery.com you on hold. There is no, ‘Press +1 562-236-3000 | 800-423-6569 1 to place an order,’ or ‘Press 2 for whatever,’” Creps said. “If a person wants to place an order over the phone, by fax, or by email, that is fine. If a customer wants to wait until a salesperson visits to give him/her the order, that is OK, as well. We just want to make it really easy.”

TECHNOLOGY AND MILLENNIALS
ot only has Classic Solutions’ willingness to embrace technology changed the way salespeople go about their jobs, it has also helped when selling to, and buying from, the largest, and probably the most tech savvy demographic in today’s workforce — the millennials. “One area we have focused on is our Web presence,” Gebhart said. “We have been making a big push recently to give customers access to our website. Another great thing we have done is making the website mobile enabled.” A mobile enabled website is one that has been designed to fit the screen of smartphones and tablets. “The millennial generation places orders from their phones or tablets,” Gebhart said. “Google did some studies showing more people are buying from their phones now than they are from their desktop computers. Moving forward, we are going to focus on how to best reach the millennial generation.”
Gebhart said millennials have grown up using electronic devices, so it comes naturally to them to conduct research on products and explore options. In contrast, previous generations had to learn from experience or word-of-mouth. Furthermore, Creps said, a millennial will want to know the advantages of doing business with Classic Solutions, as opposed to just ordering online. “For example, when it comes to a piece of equipment, the customer gets a lot, because there is someone attached to that machine,” Creps said. “If a person buys an auto scrubber from an online retailer and there are problems, the person or company he/she bought it from is not going to help. The manufacturer will
“We have been making a big push recently to give customers access to our website. Another great thing we have done is making the website mobile enabled.” — Sales Representative Dave Gebhart
Millennials also tend to use their electronic devices to research a product before they make a purchase. This trend has also changed the way salespeople approach a millennial buyer or customer. “Millennials do more research ahead of time. They tend to approach the individual sales person with an idea in mind of why they want a particular product,” Creps said. “Therefore, the salesperson needs to know that product just as well. “Today’s millennial buyers, in a lot of cases, already know why they need it, or have a good reason why. They are looking for the salesperson to either confirm the decision they are trying to make, or to give them more options. A lot of times millennials are pretty educated on what is available.”

be of no help either, because it doesn’t fix equipment.” In contrast, Classic Solutions offers training on a piece of equipment for a customer’s current employees, and will continue to train as new people are hired. Furthermore, the company operates a full-service repair department. “We also have a full e-commerce, mobile enabled website with photos, full descriptions, videos and spec sheets of all our products,” Creps said. “Every year, we get a few more people who order online. During the past year or two, we have seen a big jump in orders placed online.”
DELIVERY AND EQUIPMENT SERVICES
uccessful distributorships realize the importance of the people who drive their trucks, making deliveries to customers. It has been said of drivers that they are true ambassadors for their companies, as they are often faceto-face with customers more than anybody else, including salespeople. Classic Solutions’ friendly, accommodating, uniformed professional drivers fit that mold, and then some, Creps said. “We deliver with our own trucks and our own drivers,” Creps said. “Our drivers will deliver to the customer’s dock, or carry the products up to the third floor of a facility and put them in the closet, if that is what the customer wants.” Classic Solutions’ drivers do more than deliver products, they are also, to a certain degree, the “eyes and ears” of the company as they visit customers’ facilities. “Drivers get so used to seeing the way things are in a customer’s FLAT MOPPING closet, that if they see something out of place, or feel something is amiss, they will alert the office or a sales rep,” Creps said. “They have the numbers of the personal cell phones of the sales people and will call them and say, ‘I saw of couple of cases of a certain product. Is that supposed to be here? Is this correct?’ They save us a lot of time and money by the little errors they catch.” It takes teamwork among employees to pull off successful deliveries time after time, and with as few errors as possible. “Every person on our staff knows our goals,” Wiseman said. “A salesperson gets the account, but it is our customer service people who answer the phone and delivery drivers who speak the most with customers. “The driver is going to see someone every week or every two weeks. Our drivers have the friendly ‘get it done, get it on time attitude’ of, ‘OK, Mr. Customer, where do want this put when I make a delivery?’ They know where every customer wants products placed — what closet, what floor, what area, etc., which customers appreciate. We get calls and compliments such as, ‘Your driver was really helpful today. Our regular dock person was off work, but the driver knew where to go and what to do. He took care of us and we appreciate that.’”

Another important cog in the delivery process is a smooth, efficient warehouse operation. Again, modern computer technology plays an essential role in picking products, while making as few errors as possible. “We have 37,000 square feet of warehouse space, in addition to about 8,000 square feet for our offices,” Creps said. “We have developed what we call ‘the wave pull.’ With this technique, everything gets checked twice. It is a safety net. To make a delivery on the janitorial side costs us anywhere from $40 to $45, and sometimes more. So, eliminating mistakes and not missing pulls is super important.” Wiseman added: “As part of the wave pull procedure, once orders are entered into the computer system, we generate full summaries based on truck runs. Whatever we are working on for the next day, the warehouse gets a full summary on all the products they are going to need to pick for a particular load. Throughout the day, we will “Drivers get so used to seeing pick up to four or five differthe way things are in a customer’s ent truck runs. The company’s equipment operation includes sales, as well as on-site and inside repair capabilities. Classic Solutions has vans dedicated to on-site repairs. “We sell new and used equipment. We also repair any brand. It does not matter if a machine was purchased from us or not, we will gladly repair the item,” Creps said. Classic Solutions’ highly trained technicians are able to repair a wide variety
of equipment, including “Every person on our staff auto scrubbers; carpet exknows our goals. Machines available to rent include various types of scrubbers, sweepers and floor machinery. Classic Solutions will also loan a piece of equipment to a regular customer to help in an emergency. “We also lease equipment,” Creps said.
FINDING GOOD SALESPEOPLE IS CHALLENGING
urrently, Classic Solutions employs 12 people on its sales staff, who have played a major role in the company’s recent record-breaking years. However, finding such high-quality salespeople is not easy, Creps said. “There are a lot of salespeople out there and there are a lot of different types of sales jobs,” he said. “Some people are very good at inside sales, while some are good at outside sales. In our business, it takes a special breed of salesperson. At one stop he/she might deal with a custodian. At the next stop, he/she is with a maintenance guy, and a purchasing agent at the next stop. Sometimes, the salesperson speaks with a company’s CEO or president. This means the salesperson has to be a ‘chameleon.’ He/she must be able to play to the audience. I think that is tough for some people.”
January/February 2018 — Maintenance Sales News — 17
Another unique, and challenging, aspect of being a salesperson for a jan/san distributor is the ability to learn and retain volumes of product information. “We look for someone who is just an average man or woman who likes to spend time with people and just talk,” Creps said. “Also, we need someone who is willing to do all the research ahead of time. We don’t sell one or two products. We stock more than 2,000 items, “We must continually and there’s a lot to know. Getting good sales candidates in the door can be a challenge. “I tell everybody to always be listening and always be watching,” Creps said “I tell all the sales people you never know when you are going to come across somebody at a restaurant or somewhere else who might be a good sales staff candidate. “It works that way for drivers as well. In the past, when we have needed a driver, we were alerted to a candidate by another driver.” Gebhart and Wiseman agreed that, as in selling and seeking new customers, referrals are the best way to find new employees.
TRAINING: ANOTHER DIFFERENTIATOR
n today’s marketplace where online retailers, big box stores and e-commerce entities are dipping into the jan/san segment, a distributor’s ability to train people in the proper usage of products and equipment, as well as cleaning techniques, is an important differentiator. Classic Solutions offers various ways to educate its customers, based on the need and the type of training required. “If I’m training on a specific chemical product or a line of products, I’ll conduct a 20-minute to half-hour classroom training session, using a pro-

jector or just speaking,” Creps said. “Afterward, I will physically demonstrate how to use the product. A lot of people, including myself, just learn better visually and by actually performing the task. Using the product is a great way to generate good questions that we can address while we are there. That is my main focus when it comes to that type of training.” For equipment training, Classic Solutions reps usually take a hands-on approach. “In our equipment training, we really focus on how to maintain a piece of equipment, as well as how to operate the machine,” Creps said. “We want to make sure our customers put water in the batteries and keep the squeegee blades clean. We want to make sure they know the basic maintenance of the machine, because it saves them money in the long run. It also makes sure that person coming in every night has a nice clean machine to use. “Also, from time to time, we have a vendor day. We will put a group of people together, have them come, and offer training on specific lines of “If you are not training products.” your customer, On April 11, 2018, Classic Solutions you are not is planning its first open house. “With our new facility, we wanted to differentiating yourself have everybody here and thank them in any way.” for helping us get to where we are — Sales Representative today,” Creps said. “All of our cusDave Gebhart tomers are invited to come out and meet and see different products. We are expecting more than 400 people to attend, including 30 vendors. We will also have a catered lunch for everybody. We are planning some seminars, as well, on cleaning restrooms, machines, etc. “We really want to say ‘thank you’ to people. We want them to come and hang out and have a nice relaxing day. We will talk about work some, but mostly just hang out with our customers. Thirty-one years is a long time to be in business and we are very appreciative.”
GIVING BACK TO COMMUNITY
lanning the big April open house event to give back and say thanks to customers and vendors is in keeping with Classic Solutions’ giving character. One of the ways the company gives back to the community is its partnership with a large local trucking company. While the trucking company and Classic Solutions have partnered to send supplies to hurricane victims, the main thrust of their efforts is to help an orphanage in Haiti. “There are a lot of orphanages in Haiti. One of the largest ones is operated by a friend of ours,” Creps said. “The orphanage serves a lot of kids, and they are working on building another one, so they need tons of supplies.” What Classic Solutions has done in the past is to use a truck the company is taking off the road, load it with supplies, and ship the entire thing to Haiti, with the help of the trucking company. “We have donated four or five trucks. They were 14- and 16-foot box trucks,” Creps said. “The people in Haiti get all the supplies in the truck and then they use the truck to help people start small businesses, or just to transport food and basic necessities.” Another way Classic Solutions gives back to the community is its longstanding partnership with the YMCA of Central Ohio, which has 18 locations, and is also one of the largest child care providers in the region. Indeed, Creps has been on the YMCA consulting board for nearly five years, following in the footsteps of his father, who served on the board for almost two decades. Classis Solutions is the main sponsor of “The Big Ride,” which is a fundraiser hosted by the Downtown YMCA in Columbus to support cancer survivors and heart health. “The event is a three-hour bike ride to raise money,” Creps said. “In all, we have been involved with the Y for 30 years.” “Big Brothers, Big Sisters is another organization that we contribute to and support,” Wiseman said.

For example, we can’t be afraid to walk into a facility and say, ‘I was just in your restroom and I noticed there was an odor. From The United Group (TUG)
Connecting Member Stockholders With Premiere Manufacturers For Purchasing Power, Enhanced Profitability And Increased Sales
he United Group® (TUG) is a 100 percent Member-owned, nationwide sales and marketing group for independent B2B distributors across the United States. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in West Monroe, LA, TUG connects 400-plus Members with nearly 200 Preferred Suppliers, including major national and regional manufacturers and redistributors. The United Group is dedicated to promoting strong relationships among Members and Suppliers for increased sales and enhanced profitability for all.

TUG continues to improve its singular, proprietary Conference software, which allows Members to choose which Suppliers to meet with, and rank them in order of priority before the system generates their tabletops schedules. Suppliers can use the system to view their own meetings, search Member schedules for openings, and contact Members directly with meeting requests. The system has received positive reviews from attendees who find it easy to use and access throughout the Conference. Since 2014, we have had The United Group app, which allows conference attendees to view their full event and meeting schedules, exchange contact details with each other, access resort maps of session and event locations, find information about Suppliers, review show specials and more. In 2018, TUG’s National Conference will be held April 30-May 3 at the Hilton Anaheim, in California, and promises to be another fun and worthwhile event where relationships are forged and strengthened. Our 2018 Annual Conference will include Member/Supplier tabletop meetings, tours of local attractions for United Group family and guests, new Member orientation, annual stockholder meeting and market segment breakout sessions, and will conclude with a dinner at the Richard Nixon Library and Museum.
The United Group is dedicated to promoting strong relationships among Members and Suppliers.
Joining a buying group like TUG can help increase purchasing power for small independent distributors. It can be tough to compete against the large chains, and you may find that manufacturers are more accommodating for a group than they might otherwise be for an individual company. We also encourage our Members to work cooperatively through TUG’s secure website Forum to find solutions and move product, member-to-member. The United Group charges no membership dues, and every Member owns a single and equal share of the group. All Members are invited to increase their involvement through participation on committees, task forces and at the annual stockholder meeting. Member stockholders network with one another at regional meetings and with Preferred Suppliers at TUG’s Annual Conference, helping to cement long-lasting business and personal relationships.

The website also features a secure, password-protected portal where Members can easily check their rebate earnings, exchange information and business strategies, and publish requests to collaborate on national accounts.
The United Group seeks to serve Suppliers as fully as our Members, giving you the tools you need to be successful. We work with you to market your products to Members and create sales opportunities. DPA BUYING GROUP: Dedicated To Increasing The Sales And Profits Of Its Member Distributors And Preferred Suppliers
MISSION The DPA BUYING GROUP (www.DPABuyingGroup.com) is dedicated to increasing the sales and profits of its member distributors and preferred suppliers. The marketing and procurement organization consists of over 800 independent distributors and 220-plus national vendors within the Janitorial/Sanitary, Safety Equipment & Clothing, Packaging, Restoration, Industrial Tools and now Public Safety (Police, Fire, & EMS). DPA membership enables profitable business relationships, industry awareness and lifelong friendships. HISTORY Distributor Partners of America (DPA) was formed in September 2000 by 67 independent high volume janitorial/sanitary distributors. From DPA’s inception, members wanted to establish a high caliber and selective organization to increase their sales and profits with DPA preferred suppliers. The group’s preferred suppliers provide discounts and marketing allowances to distributor members to help them save money and grow their sales.
ing Conference, DPA distributors may also choose to attend DPA’s Safety or Industrial tradeshows right next door. The shows are held simultaneously in the same hotel, and the entire conference lasts approximately two days. “We supplemented business already this week with good margin orders using DPA suppliers of first-aid kits, custom signs and GFCI electrical products. These were all on existing Jan/San accounts. DPA’s programs have opened industrial/safety oriented business opportunities that we traditionally overlook — simple diversity has accomplished a bunch for me.” — Brian Magazine, Gem Chemical, Evansville, IN.
This year, DPA will be rolling out its new DPA Buyers Guide. This resource will be sent to the procurement persons of every distributor to help them identify who our preferred vendors are for each product category. In addition to a directory feature, the publication will contain educational information about some of our manufacturers and their product offerings. This is just another way that DPA can drive business between the group’s preferred suppliers and member distributors. The group has strong relationships with many of the industry’s leading ecommerce and technology providers such as DDI System, J&M Catalog, Step1 Software Solutions, Epicor, and ECI. DPA distributors receive significant discounts on their purchases with these companies. “Whether it’s content or inventory management solutions, we have partnerships with some of the best companies in the industry that have been doing it for a very long time,” said Jeff Tishko, DPA president. “We are always looking for ways to help the independent distributor, and to grow the business of our preferred suppliers.”
DISTRIBUTOR BENEFITS DPA offers independent distributors quarterly marketing allowances on purchases made with the group’s preferred suppliers, and these “rebates” are exclusive to the buying group members. In addition to the marketing allowances, DPA negotiates better pricing, lower minimum order requirements, extra promotions and better prepaid freight policies with its vendors. Also, DPA’s annual buying and networking conference is an opportunity for distributors to meet oneon-one with over 60 supplier companies, learning OPERATIONAL SAVINGS about the latest products and industry innovations. DPA saves its member distributors and suppliers Members can also network in roundtable discussions money on their operational expenses. STEP1 Software: The Future Of Jan/San Distribution Is Here See why STEP1 is the #1 installed system in the Jan/San industry. Our SQL-Server based system makes us the most modern package serving the industry. Our state of the art tools help our customers to grow rapidly. 3-Time Winner of ISSA's prestigious 'Best Customer Service' Award.
Our Sales Rep app is a big success. Use this impressive tool to enter orders, check stock, enter quotes, and manage your territory. It is also integrated with our optional calendar/CRM/Business Intelligence system. The CRM system shows at-a-glance if you are up or down in this account, and also suggests items that other like customers are buying that this customer is not buying. The heart and soul of the distribution business is order entry. This is the most important point of contact between your customer and your company. STEP1’s Order Desk is designed to have every answer just one click away. Customer service people can see when the last order was, what the last price was, what the new price should be and what this customer should be ordering today. Credit and payment history are immediately available, whenever they are needed. New items are just a click away and so is the on-line catalog. For the owner, STEP1 has two impressive tools. First is the CEO Dashboard, which lets you see all the vital stats of your business at-a-glance. Extensive drill-downs allow you to investigate anything that looks different than what you were expecting. You can also set goals that help you track your progress. Second is STEP1’s Dimensions Business Intelligence system. Dimensions is an easy to use guided query system for the owner or manager. See which items are doing best with your customers, and see the range of special prices being offered to customers for each item. One more click will show all similar customers that have NOT yet purchased this item. The information available to the Sales Manager is amazing.
You will be instantly able to see how the company is performing vs. your goals. This tracks through to sales offices, if you have multiple branches, then tracks through to all the individual sales people. Be able to sort and search the data to see margins by customer, by item, or by vendor. This is a separate module available just for your sales manager that automates the normal tasks of this job.
STEP1 also has several tools for your customers. There are two cus-
tomer order entry systems available. One is browser based, and will show the customer special pricing on any item they have previously purchased along with pictures and descriptions of the items. The other is a package that connects directly to you, and shows the customer status of pending orders and pricing on any items that they have not already purchased. There is also a package for your very large customers that helps the customer track their budgets and consumption. This is very useful for customers like school districts, city and county governments, and health care companies. STEP1 seamlessly integrates with JM Catalog, which is the best on-line catalog in the industry. It features 225,000-plus items in the Jan/San industry.
Customer special pricing is always an issue. STEP1 has a package called Price Manager that helps take some of the work out of all the special pricing. You can use Price Manager to assign pricing discounts or markups to groups of items for a customer. For example, you might have a policy of 23 percent discount off all linear low-density liners for the hospital. This way, no matter what liner
38 — Maintenance Sales News — January/February 2018
they choose, the pricing will be automatic and correct. This feature has helped STEP1 customers immensely. Just think of all the time you spend with customer pricing issues. STEP1 also has a margin preservation system, so that if costs go up, it shows you what you should charge to maintain the same margin as the last purchase for this customer.
If you have a service department for machine repair, STEP1 has an excellent solution called the Service Desk. This package tracks machine
repair by serial number, so that you can easily recall a machine and see all the previous service history. It also tracks total number of times the machine has been in for repair, and the total amount spent on repairing the machine. STEP1 customers have found this very useful because it helps pinpoint troublesome machines that would be less expensive for the customer to replace and stop repairing the old one.
Status codes allow you to see at-a-glance the status of every job in for repair. Statuses such as ‘On Bench’ or ‘Waiting on Part’ allow you to keep the cus-
tomer quickly informed of the status of their repair. Service Desk also has a companion product called Service Manager. The Service Manager package tracks billable time by Service Rep. This allows the owner or manager to determine the true profitability of the Service Department. It also tracks turn-around time of equipment and other key Service Department statistics.
Your warehouse people will enjoy the Warehouse Manager.
This package allows your warehouse personnel to see all the orders waiting on delivery and lets them sort the orders into truck runs on-screen. The system also allows them to grab a “wave pull” ticket, which would allow them to make one sweep around the warehouse and pick all orders for a truck run at once (this is not required, just optional). Customers have reported savings of about 3 hours per 100 orders by doing it this way, and have increased picking accuracy. Warehouse Manager also has a feature to mark an entire truck’s orders as “shipped” with one click. Once marked, the computer knows this inventory is out of the building and won’t show as floor stock. Haz-Mat issues are also addressed with this package.
Billing is very easy, since the orders are already organized by truck. When the truck comes back, just
handle any exceptions that need to be addressed. Then with one click, all orders on the truck are billed. If bills need to go with the truck, then there is an option to accomplish this as well.
General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable round out the package. The G/L is
completely integrated and very automatic. A/R and A/P have features built in that STEP1 customers have suggested to make their jobs easier and faster.
STEP1 combines the most modern technology with a package that addresses every aspect of your business. STEP1 is
the system of the future for Jan/San Distribution, and the future is today.

ardous/biohazard waste while blue is typically used for identifying recycling waste. Orange bags are often used for roadside trash collection, but are also used in healthcare facilities for clinical waste (not containing chemicals or pharmaceutical medicines). Yellow garbage bags are found in healthcare facilities for collecting chemotherapy waste.” Other colors which Aluf manufactures — as special orders — include green, grey, buff (or brown), purple (or lavender) and silver. “Color names can be quite subjective, so it is important to see a sample to assure expectations are met. As an example, the blue bags which Aluf inventories may work well for a facility’s recycling program, but not for lining receptacles at a University of Michigan’s ‘Big Blue’ football game.” For customers who want a perfect color match, Aluf can create a bag color which matches a chosen pantone PMS color. Aluf recently did this for the U.S. PGA Golf Tournament, which used Aluf-manufactured “PGA Green” garbage can liners. For more information, visit www.alufplastics.com.

Right now, about 15 percent of our manufacturing is dedicated to colored bags in various sizes and weights. “Aluf stocks colored bags including red, blue, orange and yellow. Products That Make A Difference: Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 & Newaire™ Plugin With established brands Newaire, Rainbowair and Queenaire in place, and a management team with over 30 years of odor control experience, Queenaire Technologies provides various products that incorporate up-to-date ozone generating technology as well as hydroxyl air treatment to an expanding marketplace.
Among the products offered by Queenaire Technologies are the Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 Air & Surface Treatment System and the Newaire™ Plugin Air Purifier. Helping Queenaire Technologies serve as a “one stop shop” for solving odor and air quality issues, the Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 Air & Surface Treatment System provides the benefits of both hydroxyl air treatment and ozone generation. “We have taken the best characteristics of each type of air and surface treatment for this product, which was introduced last year,” Queenaire Technologies President Susan Duffy said. “It can be used as a hydroxyl generator, in areas where people are present, to get rid of odors, bacteria and viruses. “It can also be used to generate ozone in the same locations, with the use of a timer, while people are not present, for a more in-depth odor treatment and cleaning. The range of the Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 is 6,000 square feet.” Hydroxyl radicals are formed in nature. They are diatomic molecules that are highly reactive and very short-lived. Discovered by scientists in 1963, hydroxyl radicals are often referred to as the “detergent” of the troposphere (the lowest part of the atmosphere), because they help destroy many pollutants. They also play an important role in eliminating some greenhouse gases, according to Queenaire Technologies. Atmospheric hydroxyl radicals should not be con- fused with free radicals that are produced inside living organisms. Atmospheric hydroxyl radicals are so reactive that they are instantly neutralized when making contact with any substance, and would be impossible to ingest as a complete ion. This makes using hydroxyl radicals, which are found in the outside air at all times during the day, one of the safest processes for deodorizing an occupied area. Ozone, meanwhile, is often referred to as nature’s own purifier. It’s most evident at the seashore, near a waterfall, in a rain forest and after a thunderstorm. Ozone makes up approximately 20 percent of the air being breathed everyday, and has been used over the past century to purify water and eliminate a wide range of odors. Ozone is not used as a reodorant, but rather totally destroys offending gases, reacting with contaminates in air, water, and on fabrics, walls and ceilings. And ozone is green. Newaire™ Plugin Air Purifier “What can be greener than Mother Nature’s very own air cleaner?” Duffy asked. “We can all relate to the idea of freshening our home, office and vehicle by opening the windows and letting fresh air blow through. This leaves the area smelling fresher and cleaner. What many people don’t realize is that the ozone being generated naturally in the air outdoors is what provides the deodorizing effect when the breeze blows through.” She added that ozone generation is a simple and clean technology that helps naturally eliminate odors without the use of harsh chemicals.
“From the restroom to the garbage area and every room in between, this is the safest, most effective means of eliminating troublesome odors, while improving air quality,” Duffy said. With an ozone machine, she added, basically all that is being done is manipulating indoor air by splitting oxygen molecules. This process eliminates odors.
Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 Air & Surface Treatment System
“A good ozone generator is, and always will be, the best way to deodorize air, surfaces and reach cracks and crevices. However, limitations to this process occur in areas where people are also present,” Duffy said. “A hydroxyl generator can be used to fill this void for superior air quality. With the Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 Air & Surface Treatment System, Queenaire Technologies now offers two types of odor elimination — ozone and hydroxyl — within the same machine. These technologies complement one another.” Another popular product from Queenaire Technologies is the Newaire™ Plugin Air Purifier. It’s designed to naturally deodorize rooms up to 500 square feet, eliminating odors caused by smoke, mold and mildew, pets, chemicals, garbage, cooking, etc. The Newaire™ Plugin incorporates a patented ion wind technology that allows ozone to be circulated from the machine without the use of fans or moving parts, ensuring silent operation. The product features a compact design that is less than 4 inches wide by 6 inches high by 2 inches deep, and weighs less than 1 pound. There are no parts or chemicals to replace. End-users just plug the product into a wall socket for years of silent and uninterrupted springtime fresh air. It’s perfect for continually removing odors in spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms, family rooms, laundry rooms, hallways, pet areas, hotel rooms, offices, classrooms, hospitals, nursing homes, boats, recreation vehicles, fitness centers and day care centers. “The Newaire™ Plugin crosses all lines and markets related to odor control. It can be used in occupied spaces and runs continously,” Duffy said. “Due to its smaller size, the Newaire™ Plugin is a great tool for distributor sales reps to have when visiting customers, allowing end-users to see the true potential of the product.”

New Soft Surface-Sanitizing And CRE Claims Approved For Nyco® Sani-Spritz Spray
Nyco Products Company, Inc., has added two kill claims to its SaniSpritz Spray One-Step Disinfectant. “Sani-Spritz Spray is now a proven soft surface sanitizer against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterobacter aerogenes for the spot treatment of soft surfaces. The disinfectant is also now effective against certain strains of Carbapenum-resistant Enterobacteriaceae [CRE],” said Nyco. “Soft-surface sanitizing has recently become more widely accepted as a potentially beneficial process to aid the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in hospital rooms and healthcare settings. There is extensive evidence supporting the link between soft surfaces and infection transmission. For example, one study published in the American Journal of Infection Control reported that 92 percent of privacy curtains are contaminated within one week of laundering. “Soft surfaces in healthcare settings that could benefit from spot sanitizing include
privacy curtains, drapes, seat cushions, cots, mattresses and carpeting.” A recent press release from the company stated, “EPA Registered SaniSpritz Spray is a one-step cleaner, disinfectant, fungicide, mildewstat, virucide* and deodorizer for hospitals, institutions and industrial use. Previously shown effective against bacteria and viruses, including CA-MRSA, HBV, Norwalk virus, SARS, H1N1, Influenza A, Hepatitis (HBV and HCV) and other harmful microorganisms, the addition of CRE effectiveness to Sani-Spritz Spray makes it even more beneficial in aiding the reduction of cross-contamination.” Nyco Products Company is a privately owned manufacturer of national cleaning brands and distributor of private branded chemicals used in the sanitary maintenance, industrial, institutional and other specialty cleaning markets.
