History of Goliad The City of Goliad was established in 1749. Goliad is the third oldest municipality in the state and is rich in Texas history. It is the County Seat of Goliad County and one of the oldest counties of Texas. Goliad was the smallest town in Texas to be selected for the Main Street Program in 1984. The Courthouse Square Historic District is one of the most complete examples of early Texas Settlements. The town centers around the Goliad County Courthouse and was erected in 1894. Goliad's courthouse, along with the 19th and early 20th century structures surrounding the square, was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. With a rich history and lots of attractions, you're sure to find something interesting for the whole family. *Photos courtesy of Texas Historical Commission

A decade ago, Scotty Light began the remodeling of two adjoining buildings dating to 1893; one became the Mustang Cantina, and the other, soon to be open, The Inn on the Square. The construction involved the reuse of long leaf pine, Goliad brick, and wrought iron gates from Light’s grandfather’s bank, as well as a specially designed light fixture featuring old cattle brands of the area. During reconstruction, a wall ad for Bull Durham Tobacco, (of the same period) was discovered, and the outside pavilion was added.
