History of Goliad The City of Goliad was established in 1749. Goliad is the third oldest municipality in the state and is rich in Texas history. It is the County Seat of Goliad County and one of the oldest counties of Texas. Goliad as the smallest town in Texas to be selected for the Main Street Program in 1984. The Courthouse Square Historic District is one of the most complete examples of early Texas Settlements. The town centers around the Goliad County Courthouse and was erected in 1984. Goliad's courthouse, along with the 19th and early 20th century structures surrounding the square, was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Venture along the slow moving San Antonio River, this 3.9-mile hike and bike trail is rich with historical and natural treasures. It winds its way past the Mission Espiritu Santo, the Goliad State Park and the Presidio La Bahía.

Goliad Flag Severed Arm, Bloody Sword 1836 "The Goliad flag was made personally by Captain Dimmitt himself....It was of white domestic, two yards in length and one in width, and in the center was a sinewy arm and hand, painted red, grasping a drawn sword of crimson.....The flagpole was made from a tall sycamore which was procured from the woods along the banks of the San Antonio River.....The flagstaff was in the yard of the quadrangle opposite the entrance to the officers' quarters." The Courthouse Square is a Main Street project, with charming facades, array of antique and clothing stores, an art gallery, and wonderful eateries. Save time for a walk through Goliad’s magnificent County Courthouse, built in 1894 (restoration completed 2004). Empire style courthouse lost its turrets and towers in a 1942 hurricane. The tower clock is musical!

Park Road 6, 1 mile south of Goliad on Hwy 183. A Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. interpretive ranger will guide you through the Mission and the Museum. FEE. Contact Goliad State Park at (361) 645-3450 to schedule your tour. Next, visit the Presido la Bahia and Our Lady of Loreto Chapel. They are operated by The Catholic Diocese of Victoria. Check their website for events or book a night in the Quarters.

Goliad Market Days 2nd Saturday of the Month
Goliad Market Days is an open-air market held in downtown Goliad around the beautiful Goliad Courthouse lawn. The vendors line the streets and sidewalks with shopping reminiscent of the trade days from the 1700’s. Goliad Market Days is held monthly on the second Saturday. The Goliad Chamber of Commerce has been operating Goliad Market Days for over 25 years.
