A 20TH ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE TO OUR NEIGHBORS Surprise grants, milestone donations, cake, confetti, and an elegant farm-to-table dinner experience marked 20 Years of Giving in Your Community! Whether you are a long time supporter or have recently discovered the Main Street Community Foundation, you know that we exist to help generous people fulfill their charitable goals right here in your local community. As the most comprehensive philanthropic center serving the residents and neighborhoods of Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott, we facilitate local giving to raise the quality of life for all citizens in the communities we serve. Stewarding just over $37.5 million in assets in over 200 funds, the Foundation has awarded over $12 million in grants and scholarships since its establishment in 1995. This special 20th anniversary edition of the annual report shares the stories of our history, donors, and the investments made in your community. So how do all these good things happen? It begins with YOU! Many individuals, families and businesses have put their trust in the Main

Street Community Foundation to fund a new initiative, respond to an urgent community need, or proactively address an emerging need. Our job is to honor donor intent, and to make sure every donation finds its way to the most deserving organizations. The collective philanthropy of all who have supported and continue to support MSCF will sustain a permanent source of funding for the benefit of your neighbors – forever. Our adherence to sound financial practices led to an unqualified audit opinion of our 2015 financials from the accounting firm King, King & Associates, PC. We are happy to report that although the investment markets continued to be volatile, our investment strategy resulted in a 1.4% net return. Additionally, Main Street Community Foundation is confirmed in compliance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations. Volunteer leadership is a cornerstone of our organization. The many dedicated volunteers who serve on our Board of Directors and committees are essential to the fulfillment of our mission. In

early 2016, we bid farewell to highly respected Board members Barbara Fontaine and Anita Hamzy. We welcomed Kathy Reinhard and Byron Treado. To each and all, we are very grateful for their generous donation of time, talents and community knowledge. The current Board of Directors has begun the discovery process for a new strategic plan for the future of the Main Street Community Foundation based on what matters most to the people that live in our region. By continuing our 20 year tradition of being a community foundation of significance, we will have much to celebrate when we reach our next anniversary milestone. You can RSVP by joining our efforts now, if you have not already done so. We’d love to see you in MSCF’s 25th anniversary edition! With sincere gratitude, Susan D. Sadecki, MBA President & CEO

John A. Letizia, CPA Chairman of the Board

We facilitate local giving to raise the quality of life for all citizens in the communities we serve. A NEW HOME Only three weeks into the Foundation’s 20th anniversary year, there was a cause for the year’s first celebration. We moved to a new office. The Foundation’s 20 year journey started in the corner of the Fletcher-Terry Company office before relocating a year later to 10 Main Street in Bristol. Webster Bank generously leased the Foundation a two-room office rent-free for three years. In 2005, the Foundation moved further up Main Street and settled in to a historic building with two other local organizations. However, after nearly a decade at 200 Main Street, the Foundation once again outgrew its office space and moved a couple miles down the road to

120 Halcyon Drive in Bristol. This move would not have happened without numerous dedicated individuals. A small group of volunteers dubbed the Building Committee worked tirelessly to find the Foundation a suitable home. Thank you to those Committee members: David Aldieri, Margi Fletcher, Bud Funk, Jan Neri, John Scarritt, Jeff Sonenstein and Bill Tracy. A sincere thank you to Margi Fletcher who used her interior design skills to completely outfit the new office with furniture, fresh paint and new carpet; she turned it into a “home.” Special appreciation goes out to Bill Mascetti and everyone at ACG North America, our landlord and neighbors who helped coordinate the move and who have been 3

extremely welcoming. And thank you to the Foundation’s Board of Directors for all the support and dedication as well as the Foundation’s staff for executing a seamless move. The Foundation has expanded to better serve you and the communities of Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott. But do not worry – the Foundation is not changing its name because it is no longer on Main Street! The name was created after one of our founders, Hap Barnes, realized there was a Main Street in every community the Foundation serves. So although our address changed, our mission – and our name – remains the same.

Museum in Farmington on September 12, 2015. The Main Event celebrated the journey from the Foundation’s establishment in 1995 to its 20th anniversary in 2015 with a unique farm-to-table gathering. Guests enjoyed tours of the Museum and cocktails in the sunken garden while listening to the instrumental quintet of Bob D’Angelo, Greg Hahn, John Mobilio, Jim Santucci and Rich Theriault. As the night progressed, the guests moved under the grandiose tent and relished an incredible meal on elegant farm tables while being serenaded by the melodies of Jack Lynn singing the music of Dean Martin. The evening was capped off by a live auction called by John Terrio.

The evening’s festivities resulted in net proceeds of over $100,000 to support the Money in Motion Fund at the Foundation to advance community leadership initiatives. These initiatives address challenges and respond to the pressing needs of your communities.

20TH ANNIVERSARY

THE FIRST FUND IS STILL POWERFUL Celebrating 20 Years of Giving in Your Community…by Giving Back The first fund established after the Foundation was founded in 1995 was the Bristol Savings Bank Fund. The Fund was established through the merger of Bristol Savings Bank and Webster Bank to allow the Foundation to be flexible and responsive to emerging and changing community needs.

20 Grants in 20 Days!

In 2015, in recognition of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary, the Foundation’s Board of Directors decided to give presents to the communities by surprising 20 nonprofit organizations with $1,000 grants from the Bristol Savings Bank Fund. “Distributing 20 grants from this Fund is a great way to give back while recognizing our community roots,” stated Susan Sadecki, President & CEO of the Foundation. These surprise grants, part of a special program 20 Grants in 20 Days, were awarded to nonprofit organizations located in and impacting the communities of Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott. To determine grant recipients, members of Main Street Community Foundation’s staff and Board of Directors met with leaders in the six communities to discuss 501(c)(3) organizations that are making a difference. “The Foundation’s Board of Directors took the community leaders’ thoughts and began their own intense deliberation process,” stated Sadecki. “The resulting grants will make a great impact on you and your neighbors.”

The number of grants each community was awarded was based on the city or town’s population size. The grant awards were made to enhance arts and culture; health and human services; the environment; education; and community development. The use of the awards was at the discretion of each organization. The Bristol organizations that received grants were: • Bristol Community Organization, Inc. • Bristol Veterans Council

The Plainville oorganizations that received grants were: • PARC Inc. Plainville • Plainville Community Food Pantry, Inc. • Plainville Historical Society, Inc. The Plymouth organizations that received grants were: • Plymouth Community Food Pantry • Town of Plymouth Volunteer Ambulance Corps

OUR FOUNDERS

In honor of the Main Street Community Foundation’s 20th anniversary, a group of the Founders gathered to reminisce about its history and to discuss their hopes for the future. Sherwood ‘Woody’ Anderson recalled that “Carlyle ‘Hap’ Barnes came up with the name of the Foundation. He reasoned that there is a Main Street in every town, and wanted the name to represent all of the communities the Foundation would serve.” Jeanne Radcliff added that “the early founders thought to involve the surrounding towns of greater Bristol in MSCF because they recognized many commonalities among the communities.” To read more about the history of the Foundation, visit www.mainstreetfoundation.org/about-history.php.

FOUNDERS

Sherwood Anderson Carlyle F. Barnes Thomas O. Barnes

What achievements made by MSCF over the past 20 years are you proudest of? John Smith: “I am most proud that the Foundation has become a convener to bring the community together to decide on specific priorities, initiatives, or something that needs to be addressed for the good of local residents. A permanent source of funding has been established to support the causes, projects, and issues that have emerged. The Board of Directors is a tremendous strength of the organization due to their range of professional expertise, volunteerism, and relationships within the community.”

Woody Anderson: “The citizens of the six towns in MSCF’s service area, the Foundation’s Board of Directors, and the large number of volunteers that have grown exponentially over the years, have resulted in thousands of people supporting the initiatives and activities of the Foundation, and the concept of actively engaging and giving back to their communities.”

the leaders and activists who worked to establish the fund. The WGF initiative demonstrated that funds didn’t need to be created solely by individuals, but that a group of people could come together to pool their resources in a permanent fund for a specific cause. The WGF has almost reached a $500,000 endowment in its fifteenth year.”

Jeanne Radcliff: “I am most proud of the establishment of the Women & Girls’ Fund (WGF), which provides a permanent source of funding to address the challenges and needs specifically faced by women in our community. I was invited to be among

Tom Barnes: “I am very proud that the Foundation has grown and survived, and has become a significant resource in our communities.”

8

What is your vision for the future of MSCF?

Woody Anderson: “I also hope for the continued growth of the Community Foundation, so that we won’t need an annual Friends appeal to support administrative expenses.”

Jeanne Radcliff: “You don’t have to be a millionaire to become a donor or to make an impact on future generations. MSCF offers a wide range of opportunities for giving.” The Foundation serves as a philanthropic vehicle dedicated to honoring donor intent, and responsibly stewarding every permanent gift. Through foresight and careful planning, the Founders have made it possible for anyone to make a lasting impact on their community, to leave a legacy, or to simply help a neighbor.

MSCF accepts gifts of any size, and a gift does not have to be given in the form of cash. Any type of asset can be gifted to the Foundation. Some donors choose to name MSCF a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or a gift of stock through a bequest in their will or estate plan. How will you help determine the future of your community? The Founders have proven that individuals can make a difference when they utilize the resources available to them at Main Street Community Foundation. Please visit www.mainstreetfoundation.org, or call (860)583-6363 to find out what kind of an impact you can make by creating a legacy that can begin today.

BUILDING ON A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP 1995-2015 In 1995, a group of visionary local leaders officially established the Main Street Community Foundation. Since then, the Foundation has grown to be an important philanthropic vehicle thanks to the leadership of dozens of dedicated and generous volunteers. It was Isaac Newton who said, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” We wish to recognize and thank the giants of the past 20 years: Past Chairmen of the Board Sherwood Anderson Thomas O. Ed Lorensen: “I hope for the continued growth of the Foundation and firmly believe this is possible so long as we can assure donors that distributions from their scholarship and/or designated funds will always support those areas they have chosen. I believe our dedication to this principle, while difficult at times considering competing interests, will serve Main Street well and collateral growth in undesignated funds and corporate support should follow.”

Tom Barnes: “I would like people to know that they have the opportunity to leave a legacy by establishing a fund at the Foundation to provide a permanent source of funding for the causes that are important to them, and to seize that opportunity now, or to create a specific plan for it to happen when they are no longer alive.”

GIFT PLANNING

GIFT PLANNING

Since our founding in 1995, endowed gifts and bequests have been the cornerstone of charitable contributions to the Main Street Community Foundation. Each of the following funds established in 2015 reflects a donor’s interest or philanthropic objective to leave a legacy and make a difference in one or more of the communities we serve – Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott.

10

FUNDS ESTABLISHED IN 2015

DONNA BORYSEWICZ FUND FOR WOMEN Donna Borysewicz was always the first person to lend a helping hand and offer words of support. In remembrance of her passion and love for helping others, especially women and children, Donna’s family and friends established this fund upon her passing after a courageous fight with a chronic illness. This fund will support those initiatives identified by the Women & Girls’ Immediate Response Fund. BILL & JANET BROWNSTEIN CHARITABLE FUND Longtime Bristol residents Bill and Janet Brownstein established this fund to support a variety of charitable organizations

The Brownstein family has always been a supporter of the Greater Bristol community and specifically of programs focused on children, youth and families. MAMA SANDY CAGGIANO FUND Sandy Caggiano was a devoted teacher who worked in the Bristol School system for 30 years. She truly cared about her students and their families and was affectionately known as “Mama” to those close to her. After a courageous battle with cancer, Sandy passed away on April 20, 2010. To honor her memory and all that she cared about, the family of Sandy Caggiano recently established this fund to provide an annual grant to the Family Resource Center at South Side School located in Bristol, CT to support children and families serviced in the program. JEFFREY DOWNES MEMORIAL TRUCK DRIVING SCHOLARSHIP FUND For over 40 years, Jeffrey Downes drove commercial trucks, he loved his work, and truly had a passion for driving. This scholarship fund was established by his family to honor his memory upon his passing in 2015, after a hard fought battle with cancer. This scholarship fund will support a graduating Bristol Central High School senior who is ranked academically in the top 10 of the class. IMMANUEL LUTHERAN ALUMNI TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND Immanuel Lutheran School has been a cornerstone of the Bristol community for the past 119 years. GIFT PLANNING

STANLEY P. BITEL MEMORIAL FUND Stanley P. Bitel personified entrepreneurial spirit, continual learning and self achievement. In 1954, Stan started his own spring business in the garage of his home on Rowley Street in Berlin and today the business is still flourishing as Rowley Spring and Stamping Corporation in Bristol. In memory of Stan, his family and friends established a scholarship fund for students who embody the characteristics he valued. A scholarship will be awarded annually to a resident of Connecticut who is seeking qualifying skilled training in the manufacturing trade or is pursuing a four year degree in business or engineering as it relates to a career in manufacturing.

GIFT PLANNING

KALT MOREAU FAMILY FUND “READY, SET, GO!” Susan Kalt Moreau, the Deputy Superintendent of the Bristol Public Schools, and her family have a passion for education and believe that it changes lives. However, she noticed that not all graduating high school seniors had the support necessary to navigate the college acceptance process. They established this fund to provide an honorarium to a knowledgeable individual who will assist Bristol Public School students, who have been accepted to college, in preparing them for the transition to college from acceptance to enrollment. KRISTEN’S KAUSE FUND Kristen Brittany Milano had a larger-than-life personality and made a positive impact on all those she came in contact with. Kristen’s family and friends established this fund in her memory after she died tragically in a house fire caused by fireworks on June 22, 2014 at the age of 19. This designated fund will provide an annual grant to the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs for the purpose of organizing and facilitating a communitywide fire safety education program which includes information specific to the dangers of fireworks. PAT & MORRIE LAVIERO FAMILY CHARITABLE FUND Bristol residents Pat and Morrie Laviero have long supported charitable causes in their local community and surrounding towns. Through this advised fund they will continue fulfilling their

charitable goals by supporting a variety of organizations primarily in the communities served by the Main Street Community Foundation. MALERBO VOLLEYBALL COURT FUND This fund served as a collection mechanism for donations and grant funds which were used to build a sand volleyball court at the Malerbo Recreational Facility in Burlington. The building of the court was planned, organized and executed by Eagle Scout candidate Kevin Kryzwick of Troop 23 in Burlington. The project was completed in November 2015 and promotes positive aspects of outdoor recreation activities in the Burlington community. ANTHONY NORTON SCHOLARSHIP FUND Anthony “Tony” Norton had a passion for teaching and was a beloved teacher at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School in Terryville who passed away at the young age of 35 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Tony’s 15-year career as an educator and coach led him to his most recent position as a seventh and eighth grade science teacher at the Eli Terry Jr. Middle School, where he started the Ecology Club. This fund will award a scholarship annually to a Terryville High School graduating senior pursuing post secondary education at a two-year or four-year college with a major in education or science.

BEQUEST WILL SUPPORT THE WORK OF THE FOUNDATION

GIFT PLANNING

“The process of setting up a bequest is easier than people think,” explained Bill Tracy, a former Bristol resident and attorney at the Bristol law firm of Furey, Donovan, Tracy & Daly PC. Bill was recruited as a volunteer by Jeanne Radcliff, a Main Street Community Foundation Founder and has actively supported the Foundation over the past 15 years. He has served on the Asset Development and General Grant Distribution committees. In 2000, Bill joined the Foundation’s Board of Directors, leading the board as Chair from 2011-2013. Currently, Bill

6

has remained involved by serving as Chair of the Bradley Henry Barnes & Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust Advisory Committee that is responsible for recommending grants from that Trust.

Far-reaching impact of the

Foundation’s efforts in the six towns it serves.

In 2002, Bill and his wife, Kim, made changes to their estate planning documents to include a bequest to benefit the Main Street Community Foundation Endowment Fund, a Sustainability Fund established in 2000 to support the operational costs of the Foundation. Through his volunteer experiences at the Foundation, Bill has witnessed first hand the far-reaching impact of the Foundation’s efforts in the six towns it serves. He also understands that the needs of the community will continue to evolve and change over time. Bill is doing his part to ensure that the Foundation will maintain a strong and secure position leading local philanthropic efforts that respond proactively to changing needs and opportunities. Bill recognizes that the Foundation fulfills its mission with a very small staff, a fiscally responsible operating budget, and

a dedicated volunteer base. Bill hopes that his bequest will assist in strengthening the Foundation’s role as a funder, community leader, convener, and advocate for future generations. “Kim and I are committed to the mission of the Foundation. We made the decision to become CornerStone Society members when we realized the positive results the Foundation was achieving for so many individuals and organizations throughout the Community.” Bill stated. “Every year, during the Friends campaign, Tom Barnes appeals to the Foundation’s Board of Directors and challenges them to achieve 100 percent participation in the campaign, to donate what they are each able to give individually,” Bill said. “I would like to offer my own challenge. I would like to see other Directors become CornerStone Society members. It is not a complicated process, and we should

14

lead by example in our support of the Foundation.”

Bill advises individuals beginning or modifying their estate planning to seek legal counsel, and to review the resources available on the Foundation’s website, www.mainstreetfoundation.org. Within the “Giving” and “For Advisors” tabs on the website, information about how bequests are established, potential tax benefits, and examples of specific language in bequest planning documents are provided. The information is intended for donors, legal counsel, and financial planners. “I understand that as an attorney, I already have all of these resources and documents at my finger tips. However, the Foundation has worked diligently over the years to make sure the same resources are easily accessible to all potential donors. Kim and I invite others to join us as CornerStone Society members.”

LEAVING A LEGACY THROUGH BEQUESTS AND PLANNED GIVING

A cornerstone provides a strong support to a structure for its future stability.

Laying this groundwork for the future is critical. Like this permanent support, CornerStone Society members lay the groundwork for the organizations and causes they care about most, and the future stability of the Foundation.

The opportunity to give later is simple. You can leave a bequest to the Main Street Community Foundation for the causes you care about in a will or trust, through a retirement plan designation, life insurance beneficiary designation, remainder interest in real estate, or other planned giving vehicles.

We are pleased to recognize the following very generous individuals who have made or have communicated their plans to leave a gift to the Foundation in their will, estate plan or some other deferred gift.

The Main Street Community Foundation is built on the dreams and desires of people who are part of the Foundation’s service area. For some people, the desire to create a legacy comes during their life as a current gift. For others, these legacies are shaped by the donor as future bequests or planned gifts. And still at other times, a celebratory or tragic event, such as a retirement or sudden death, will be the impetus for honor or memorial gifts that may be used as the beginning of an endowed fund in a loved one’s name. Large or small, all of these gifts will enhance the quality of life in your community for generations to come. If you have included the Main Street Community Foundation in your estate plan and would like to be included in the Main Street CornerStone Society, please contact the Foundation office at 860.583.6363.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP Students enrolled in the Adult Education Diploma and Certificate program learn about manufacturing.

A Bristol resident utilizes the Warming Center, pictured at right.

The Foundation’s community leadership efforts, also known as “Money in Motion”, address a broad range of community goals. We identify opportunities within the community to support meaningful dialogue on issues affecting the towns we serve. We convene community members, assess changing needs, and propose action on critical concerns. In this way, we are able to develop collaborative solutions to meet emerging needs and provide support to what matters most to the people who live and work in the cities and towns of this region.

How happy are you? Have you seen a dentist lately? Is it safe to walk in your neighborhood? Is local government responsive to your needs? Do you need more education or training to advance in your current job? These are some of the more than 100 questions that nearly 17,000 Connecticut residents answered as part of the 2015 DataHaven Community Wellbeing Survey. DataHaven, a nonprofit organization based in New Haven, led the collection and study of neighborhood-level public data and this effort is believed to be the most intensive effort of its kind in the United States. The results

of the collection and study produced high quality information on issues that are most meaningful to local residents. In addition, the results will ideally foster collaboration between the hundreds of organizations, institutions, businesses and agencies that are working to build stronger communities. Among the results is the fact that the effects of poverty are profound and far-reaching, weighing on people’s overall happiness and rendering life less satisfying for people across lines of race and geography in Connecticut.

Main Street Community Foundation was one of nearly 100 government, academic, health-care, and community partners to support the project. A $6,400 grant from the Money in Motion Fund at the Foundation ensured that residents in Greater Bristol would have their voices heard. To view the results of the survey, visit www.ctdatahaven.org/reports/datahavencommunity-wellbeing-survey.

E N D I N G F A M I LY H O M E L E S S N E S S An increase in the number of homeless individuals and families in Bristol led local organizations, including Main Street Community Foundation, to band together and create the Ending Family Homelessness Task Force. The Task Force not only studies the issue of homelessness but also works to address, and ultimately, eliminate it. The Ending Family Homelessness Task Force has worked to better understand who is homeless and why they are homeless. Homelessness is a complex issue and occurs for a number of different reasons, including evictions, condemnations, fires, criminal history and substance abuse. There are also different categories of homelessness: chronic, imminent and literal. Homeless individuals and families may be living outside, with friends or in a shelter.

The Ending Family Homelessness Task Force works to identify solutions for unsheltered persons in Bristol. Through these activities, the Task Force realized that having someone available to help homeless individuals navigate the housing systems was critical. With the support of a $30,000 grant in August 2015 from the Money in Motion Fund at the Foundation, the Task Force hired a part-time housing coordinator through the United Way of West Central Connecticut. The housing coordinator works with imminently homeless, literally homeless and chronically homeless adults and children to help them become “document ready”, navigate the ever-changing housing systems and programs, develop landlord contacts and collaborate with other agencies to develop and share a Landlord Registry, and transport and accompany clients to housing related appointments.

Furthermore, the Task Force, which was founded in 2014, was integral in establishing a warming center at Bristol Community Organization (BCO) in the winter of 2015. The warming center had over a dozen volunteers and provided a warm, safe place for about 15 residents a day. An organized inventory of winter clothing and personal hygiene items are provided as well as computers and printers to assist in job searches. The warming center has provided much needed human interaction and has also connected residents with other resources they may need. Other activities supported by the Task Force include the Point in Time Count, an annual federally-mandated count of each community’s homeless population, and Hair Cuts for the Homeless, an initiative that provides free haircuts.

BUILDING CAPACITY OF LOCAL NONPROFITS Our local nonprofits are vital. They focus resources and provide services to meet community needs with one broad goal: to improve the quality of life of local residents. Because of the shared goal, Main Street Community Foundation has made a commitment to strengthening our communities’ nonprofit organizations and their leaders, both for today and for the future. For the past six years, the Foundation has partnered with local organizations, businesses and individuals to offer workshops and webinars as part of its Nonprofit Education Series. The Nonprofit Education Series is available to local organizations. Sessions

are on topics of interest that will enhance the development and knowledge of nonprofit professionals, board members and volunteers. In 2015, the Foundation partnered with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Connecticut Chapter (AFP) to present four webinars. The topics included ethics, fundraising, planned giving and social media and representatives from nearly two dozen organizations attended. Furthermore, the Foundation is proud to be recognized as a resource for nonprofits. Organizations can feel comfortable and confident when approaching the Foundation for guidance and support. The Foundation regularly

25

publicizes relevant funding and educational opportunities and provides direction on submitting grant applications. The Women & Girls’ Fund of Main Street Community Foundation annually holds a grantwriting workshop to help ensure that local nonprofits are submitting competitive proposals. The Foundation’s commitment to strengthening and supporting our nonprofit organizations includes more than giving financial grants. We take pride in knowing the ins and outs of the other organizations serving the local communities. We are in this together.

STEWARDSHIP OF ASSETS

STEWARDSHIP OF ASSETS

The role of the Main Street Community Foundation as a steward of permanent assets provides a unique service to the community. Each of the funds listed in this report was established by a donor with a very specific purpose in mind. Safeguarding assets in perpetuity to honor donor intent is a responsibility we uphold every day. Administered prudently and thoughtfully, endowments will continue to provide a stable source of funding to projects, programs, and organizations in the Foundation’s service area. All financial policies instituted by the Foundation are cornerstones of that prudent stewardship.

Burlington Community Fund 2015 BURLINGTON ADVISORY COUNCIL

Janet Schwartz, Chairman

Jonathan Schwartz, Secretary

Sanford Mazeau, Treasurer

“Clear as a bell!” is an expression that means something is easily and readily heard and understood. However, the Burlington Community Fund decided to drop the word “Bell” from its name due to confusion it seemed to be causing regarding the mission of the fund. “The Bell remains a symbol of the Fund, calling the community to action to help those in need,” explained Janet Schwartz, Chairman of the Fund’s Advisory Council. “Our mission remains the same, to support projects and programs that will enhance the quality of life of Burlington residents.”

Robert Caiaze Sandy Hierl Ann Mazeau Bob Merriman Ann Noble

That mission first came to life in 2015 in the spring, when the Burlington Community Fund awarded a $1,150 grant to the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department. In addition to that grant, for the first time in the history of the Fund, a competitive grant cycle was offered in the fall and a total of $900 was awarded to three organizations. For grant descriptions see page 18. In addition to its name change, the Burlington Community Fund adopted an initiative to inform

the community of opportunities to support its mission. Volunteers welcomed new residents to town by assembling and distributing tote bags with information about the Burlington Community Fund, as well as brochures and coupons for local businesses and organizations. Proceeds from the annual Burlington 5K and the fundraiser held at KC Dubliner were donated to Burlington Community Fund. Both events bring Burlington residents together, while building the endowment for charitable purposes. The sound of the bell is clearly being heard throughout the community.

Make A Mark Region 10 Enrichment Fund 2015 MAKE A MARK ADVISORY COMMITTEE

“For a while, I was stuck in a cycle that I couldn’t get out of. I was either moving or storing things for people. I bounced from production lines, to delivery trucks, or airplane cargo holds, and recycling bins. I wanted to make a change, and believed I had more potential.” A $2,296 award from the Make A Mark Region 10 Enrichment Fund changed his destiny. The award led him to Makerspace, where students at Lake Garda Elementary School and Harwinton Consolidated School work on open-ended problems with a variety of materials in science, math, engineering and technology (STEM) focused activities. No longer would he face the box-cutter, or be recycled into yet another box. At Makerspace,

students used him as a base, adhering conductive copper tape to form paper circuits, and molding conductive dough into “squishy circuits” which employ lights, motors and buzzers. The students then combined their knowledge of circuits with programming skills to create a cardboard instrument. Voila! - cardboard box material was transformed into something musical. Critical thinking, collaboration skills, and creative problem solving challenges are inherent in Makerspace projects. The Makerspace project is one example of how students’ minds are transformed through the enrichment projects supported by Make A Mark Region 10 Enrichment Fund. In 2015, three other

awards were made from the Fund, for a total of $4,368. For grant descriptions see page 18-19. The permanently endowed Make A Mark Region 10 Enrichment Fund was established in 2009 at the Foundation to expand educational opportunities that cannot be provided by the school district’s budget, and impacts a student population of 3,000. Donations from individuals, families, and businesses as well as fundraising events promote a united sense of community among residents from Burlington and Harwinton in support of their shared school district. In 2015, MAM community and fundraising events included the annual Johnnycake Music Festival, the annual Chess Tournament, and the weekly Chess Club.

The Plainville Community Fund, an endowed fund at the Main Street Community Foundation, awarded six grants for a total of $8,050 to enhance the lives of Plainville residents. “We had a busy year evaluating grant applications and raising awareness for the Fund,” stated Dolly Chamberlin, Chair of the Plainville Community Fund Advisory Council. For grant descriptions see page 19. Since its establishment in 2006 by a group of committed community leaders, the Plainville Community Fund has awarded a total of $41,600 to 43 programs and projects that improve the quality of life of Plainville residents. The Fund

will continue to grow and provide increasing support to nonprofit organizations serving Plainville - forever. The Fund thrives on generous donations from individuals, families and businesses. However, fundraising initiatives have gained momentum through the years. The popular “Bountiful Basket Competition”, held in the lobby of Gnazzo’s Food Center, brought together individuals, businesses, and organizations to benefit local residents. In addition, other community events such as the first annual Plainville PumpkinFest highlighted the collective impact a small community can have on its own neighbors.

The year began and progressed like many others before it, and although the year always ends on a high note – the announcement of grant awards – 2015 ended in an especially celebratory way. The year began at the Fund’s January Annual Meeting and Grantee Reception which then led to a memorable and inspiring Wonder of Women (WOW) event in April. The signature event, chaired by Advisory Board member Catherine Cassin, attracted a record 430 attendees and featured Scot Haney and Irene O’Connor, WFSB Channel 3 television personalities, as special guest speakers. The proceeds from the WOW event, as well as the distributions from the Barbara Hackman Franklin Fund for Women and the John &

Sofia Bayne Catherine Cassin Angela Chapman Valerie Furey

Gloria DiFrancesco Fund for Women and Girls, made it possible for the Women & Girls’ Fund to grant $35,350 to 11 organizations and programs in 2015. In addition, 10 grants totaling over $2,000 were awarded from the Women & Girls’ Immediate Response Fund to support local women and girls who needed immediate assistance due to a particular life situation or unexpected financial hardship. In 2016, the Fund will be celebrating its 15th anniversary and commemorating its successful investment in programs that improve the lives of local women and girls. To usher in the celebration, the Fund initiated A Toast to Women in November 2015, a pay it forward campaign to honor 1,000 special women who

have made a positive impact in the lives of others. Each $15 donation made was a “toast” to a mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend or relative; acknowledged the positive impact they have made on others; and supported local women and girls. When the Women & Girls’ Fund was established in 2001, the founding group of dedicated women had a dream: To grow the Fund’s endowment to $500,000. At that level, the Fund can provide the necessary support to advance conditions and opportunities for local women and girls. The Advisory Board has made it their goal to realize the vision set forth by the original founders and grow the endowment to $500,000 by the end of 2016. What a way to celebrate the Fund’s 15th anniversary!

2015 BRADLEY HENRY BARNES & LEILA UPSON BARNES MEMORIAL TRUST ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Bradley Henry Barnes & Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust Advancing the health and wellness of Southington residents is the focus of capital items and programs funded by the Bradley Henry Barnes & Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust. In support of that mission, $479,038 was awarded to eight organizations in 2015 to address substance abuse prevention and mental health needs, health care for an aging population, and better integrated health care delivery. In total, $1.5 million has been awarded from the Trust since a 2013 study on the healthrelated needs of Southington residents was commissioned and a more targeted distribution format was adopted. Programs funded by the Trust serve a community that is diverse in its needs and demography. Southington residents who have benefited from the programs include: professionals struggling with chemical addiction; emotionally exhausted families caring for their loved ones in the early stages of dementia; and individuals with arthritis seeking relief through exercise. Additionally, as a part of a grant awarded to Wheeler Clinic, a Behavioral Health Resource Directory was created and distributed to provide Southington residents with information on

services to address mental health and addiction challenges. It details local resources available for children, adolescents, adults and older adults and how they can be accessed. The following grants were awarded in 2015: • $75,000 to Alzheimer’s Resource Center of Connecticut’s Hope Full Lives program to continue to ease and decrease caregiver burden and promote the positive mental health and well-being of individuals with dementia • $100,000 to Hartford HealthCare at Home to support an integrated care approach for Southington adults ages 65 and older, which includes a geriatrician, geriatric pharmacist consultation and a telemonitoring program • $39,000 to HAVEN, Inc. for confidential assistance to healthcare professionals, living or working in Southington, facing physical or mental illness, emotional distress or chemical dependency • $10,000 to support the 2016 Healthy Family FunFest • $25,860 to Hospital of Central Connecticut for a Glidescope, which allows for the quick intubation of a patient’s airways

individuals with arthritis to stay active through cardiovascular exercises, strength training, balance and flexibility • $118,000 to Southington Community Cultural Arts to establish the Uarts program and support for renovations to the Gura Building on Southington’s Main Street, which includes the Uarts Center, providing creative job skills training for individuals with disabilities • $79,075 to Wheeler Clinic to continue the work of the Southington Health Outreach Project to enhance access to mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment services for Southington residents. “The grants awarded in 2015 illustrate the Foundation’s understanding that a one-size fits all approach to programming will not work. Delivery of services must be tailored to meet specific needs, and those needs may change and evolve over time,” stated William J. Tracy Jr., Chairman of the Barnes Memorial Trust Advisory Committee, and former Chairman of the Community Foundation Board. Since 2005, the Trust Advisory Committee and the Foundation’s Board of Directors have honored and ensured that Mr. Barnes’ wishes for this gift to the residents of Southington will be permanently safeguarded.

STEWARDSHIP OF ASSETS

GIVING BACK TO BRISTOL Although he passed away in 2004, E. Bartlett “Bart” Barnes, the wellknown publisher of The Bristol Press, had a lifelong love of the Bristol community. Sally Barnes Sonne, one of Bart’s four children, caught that love from her father, and though she may have moved from Bristol nearly 50 years ago, she has never forgotten her roots. In 2015, Sally and her husband Chris recommended a $300,000 grant to Main Street Community Foundation from the Vincent Mulford Foundation, a foundation established by Chris’ grandfather, which was dissolving. “This milestone gift, one of the largest single donations the Community Foundation has received, will benefit

James and Assunta Manware Marion and Eugene Manware Leonard and Meliney Marcheselle Frederick and Mary Beth Marinelli Daniel and Sandy Marseglia David and Susan Martel Peter and Deborah Martin Peter and Kate Massaro MassMutual Financial Group Richard Mastrodonapo John and Sharon Mattas Julie and Patrick Matthews Nancy and Anthony Mattioli Margaret Maynard Mark and Kay Mazar Sanford and Ann Mazeau Megan and John Mazzei David and Mary Ann McCarthy Joanne and Kevin McCarthy Angie McCormack The McDougall Agency LLC, dba Farmer’s Insurance Marion McLam

the Greater Bristol community for generations to come,” Susan Sadecki, President & CEO of the Community Foundation stated. “We are very grateful to Sally and Chris.” The $300,000 grant is supporting current funds and initiatives at the Community Foundation, including:

“We selected Main Street Community Foundation as a grant recipient to honor my father’s memory as well as the family’s appreciation for the Bristol community,” Sally Barnes Sonne
