Robin Schaefer

Randomonium 1. Christmas was first recognised in the US in 1836. 2. Spider’s webs are traditional Polish Christmas decorations, as the spider wove a blanket for Jesus 3. X-Mas actually has a meaning; the X stands for Christ and is the Greek abbreviation. 4. Saint Nicholas was originally a stern, harsh man holding a birch branch who symbolised discipline. 5. Santa Claus flying in the sleigh was an image drempt up by the same man who created the headless-horseman, the image was made in 1819. 6. Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra (also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker, Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna, and Nikolaos of Bari), who lived during the fourth century. Born in Patara (in modern-day Turkey), he is the world’s most popular non-Biblical saint, and artists have portrayed him more often than any other saint except Mary. He is the patron saint of banking, pawnbroking, pirating, butchery, sailing, thievery, orphans, royalty, and New York City. 7. The earliest known Christmas tree decorations were apples. At Christmastime, medieval actors would use apples to decorate paradise trees (usually fir trees) during “Paradise Plays,” which were plays depicting Adam and Eve’s creation and fall. 8. Most of Santa’s reindeer have malesounding names, such as Blitzen, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrated. 9. Whatever New Year traditions we speak of are actually meant for bringing good luck. For instance, eating black-eyed peas on the day of New Year is believed to bring good luck in several parts of the United States.
