Council told to sharpen up on water quality Tom Doudney
SELWYN is likely to see more instances of serious waterborne illnesses in future, possibly even deaths, unless changes are made, Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey says. Selwyn District Council has apologised for a water systems failure, which led to a gastroenteritis outbreak in Darfield, and instituted a full external and internal review. However, council staff and councillors
contacted by Selwyn View rejected Dr Humphrey’s suggestion that a reticulated sewerage system was needed in the eastern part of the district to safeguard residents, against future outbreaks. The recent outbreak happened after the town’s deep water well pump failed, forcing a switch to Waimakariri River water, where the chlorination unit also failed. One hundred and sixty-six Darfield residents were struck down with symptoms including diarrhoea and vomiting. Of the 25 residents

who were sampled, all had campylobacter and one also had giardia. Dr Humphrey said that a “multi barrier” approach was the only responsible way to address water quality in the region, which included addressing agricultural run-off issues in the district and also looking at the sewerage system. It would not be acceptable for the council to rely on any one barrier, such as its pumping system or chlorination levels, alone. Continued on page 2

Need for reticulated sewerage system disputed Continued from page 1
Darfield’s sewerage system was “outdated and potentially dangerous”. With a population of 1500, it was the largest town in the country to rely on septic tanks and boulder holes instead of reticulated sewerage. “The attitude of the council is they can just muddle through. They can’t muddle through, they need to get a grip and start thinking about providing a 21st century system for a 21st century community.” Campylobacter could have potentially serious consequences and there were other potentially worse infections, which could be sourced from animal or human waste and had been seen in Selwyn in the past.
“We have had one person hospitalised on this occasion but we do know that we live in an environment where, unless we have an absolutely rigorous approach to our water supply, we may well have a tragedy and we’ve seen that in other parts of the world which are very similar to New Zealand.” Dr Humphrey cited a Canadian case from a decade ago where seven people in a town the size of Darfield “where the multi barrier approach had failed” died after contracting a waterborne illness. A reticulated sewerage system would be cheaper at around $10,000 per household than a state-of-the-art septic tank at $13,000 per
household, Dr Humphrey said. However, Malvern ward councillor Sam Broughton, who had been part of a steering committee on waste management in Darfield and Kirwee, disputed the need for a reticulated system. “All the evidence that we were shown would suggest there is not an issue of contamination of underground water sources in Darfield as it currently stands so that’s why the decision was made to not go with reticulation. And the costs we were presented were in the vicinity of $25,000 per household [for a reticulated system].” The state-of-the-art septic tanks already in place for many homes performed as well as a
reticulated system and would be a more cost effective option should any older septic tanks need to be replaced, he said. Council assets manager Murray Washington said the septic tank system was performing perfectly well and residents seemed happy with it. “We don’t think many residents would want to pay for an expensive upgrade, given the current knowledge of the septic tank system,” he said. The boil water notice issued to Darfield at the time of the outbreak was the fifth in the Selwyn District in the last 12 months, with the Hororata (previously called Glentunnel), Sheffield and Malvern Hills water schemes also having had notices issued.

ON the second anniversary of the September 4 earthquake, this is a good time to think about how far we’ve come as a district. Memorable to me is hearing about the “random acts of kindness” that people have benefitted from over the past two years. More than ever, we’re acting as a true community – looking after our neighbours, welcoming our newcomers and even extending generosity to complete strangers. Our district’s Community Response Teams and Neighbourhood Support groups are great
examples of our people putting their hands up to take responsibility for their neighbours whenever there’s a crisis. They are a vital mechanism for council to ensure we can reach into the heart of our communities in times of need. While Selwyn District as a whole might have fewer issues than its city neighbours, there are still ongoing stresses through our recovery. We’re discovering more and more buildings that now don’t meet the basic requirements of the new building code and it looks like we may

The Bringer of Gifts - Clare Reilly The Bringer of Gifts is an exhibition dedicated to the magnificent kereru, the New Zealand native or wood pigeon. The kereru is our largest remaining native bird capable of swallowing the fruits (larger than 12mm in diametre) of some of our native trees such as karaka, taraire and tawa. The resultant deposits of seeds are dispersed throughout our forests where kereru range for food, sometimes travelling up to 50 kilometres in search of food sources. They will eat berries, flowers, fruits and leaves of over 60 native tree species and introduced tree species as well. Miro and pigeonwood, specifically, are spread by kereru on Banks Peninsula. The devastation of Banks Peninsula forests through fires and felling, during the 19th century, removed most of the natural habitat for our native bird species; but against the odds, the kereru maintained a hold on the land, and, more recently, there has been a gradual increase in their numbers. This recovery has been assisted through a number of factors: the regeneration of second-growth bush; the predator control carried out by individuals and community groups; and the formation in 2000 of the Kaupapa Kereru Project (an iwi-led, community-based, multi-agency project that is supported by the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust), which has been researching kereru ecology as a basis for managing and improving its habitat. Kereru are daily visitors to both my Cashmere hillside garden and bach at French Farm. I have been enthralled by their quiet presence for as long as I can remember, and their skilful flight is always a joy to behold. In both gardens, tree lucerne sustains them during the cold days of winter, and an abundance of plum trees, kowhai, cabbage trees, five finger, titoki, to name a few other food sources, along with freshly provided water, keeps them returning. This Bringer of Gifts, playing its vital role in our forests and helping to restore them, must be treasured and protected so that its future is assured. We need to have our spirits uplifted by the treasures of our environment, including the kereru.

This will have ongoing repercussions while we plan what we’re going to do to ensure there are sufficient venues for our communities to gather in. We know there’s been a huge amount of building repairs and new homes. Figures from the Fletchers hub for Selwyn show that some $96.5 million has been spent on 3292 completed repairs, out of a total of 7750 repairs to be carried out. So they’ve completed nearly 43 percent of Selwyn’s repair jobs being carried out by Fletchers. At the same time, we’re greeting many new faces in our area as city folk choose to come and live in Sensational Selwyn. Recent building consent figures show in the year to the end of June the council processed 616 building consents for new dwellings, compared to 354 the previous year. In July this year alone, 56 Selwyn District Mayor Kelvin Coe new dwelling building consents were issued. News in brief Aquatic Centre fundraising passes $1 million mark AROUND $70,000 in donations and sponsorship and $1,060,000 from funders has pulled the Selwyn Aquatic Centre fundraising campaign to two-thirds of its desired total, $1.5 million. Selwyn Aquatic Facilities manager Kathy Moore said as well as grants from major funders, donations had been arriving regularly since the campaign launch earlier this year. “Our community fundraising has earned
us $70,100 in cash and kind donations and sponsorships,” she said. “We’ve received some support in our Aquatic Star category – donations of $500. These people will be acknowledged with wall tiles and on our Aquatic Star walkway when the new facility opens midway through 2013.” The council was hoping to get families to purchase and design their own wall tiles, for inside the centre, for $75 per tile.

Inspirational trip for young adventurer Samantha Early
WORDS can’t explain the beauty of the Kermadec Islands, according to St Thomas of Canterbury College student Craig Smith, who recently took part in the first-ever Young Blake Expedition. “You were just around one of the most pristine environments there is, even the water was so crystal clear,” Craig, who lives in Leeston, said. As one of the 30 youth delegates on the 12-day August expedition, led by the Sir Peter Blake Trust, his roles included plankton monitoring, snorkelling, taking part in Navy life on the HMNZS Canterbury and tagging sharks for research. “We had to catch them off a fishing rod, which we all had permits for, bring it on to the boat, size it up, see
what breed and sex it is, put a tag in there, measure it up,” he said. He said the biggest one he saw was about 1.57 metres long. Craig said he was planning a career in the Navy once he had finished school. “I also want to make people environmentally aware of what we have and what we need to protect because if you don’t protect it, it will be gone. “Now it’s our duty as kids to go back home and make a difference.” Craig said another highlight was tramping on Raoul Island and coming across historical grave sites and abandoned ships like the wreck of the Kinei Maru at Denham Bay. “On normal occasions when we went

Lady Isaac establishes native plantings award Pascoe improves medal tally A NEW award, to be called The Diana Isaac Cup, has been created by Lady Isaac to recognise outstanding efforts to weave native plants into the Selwyn District’s working lands. Lady Isaac said the incorporation of native plants into the working lands of Selwyn would bring environmental, ecological and aesthetic benefits to the region. “This award embraces the principle shared by my late husband Neil, of combining conservation with commercial venture and I hope to encourage and recognise those who also espouse this vision.” The award will formally be announced and nominations will be called for on Saturday, 5pm at Coe’s Ford following a planting day
organised by the Te Ara Kakariki Greenway Canterbury Trust. The successful nomination will receive the cup at a ceremony planned for February 2013. The Te Ara Kakariki Greenway Canterbury Trust was established in 2007 to promote the use of native plants across the lowlands of the Canterbury Plains. In June the trust was awarded a Ministry for the Environment Green Ribbon for its community New award: Diana Lady Isaac displays the cup. the opportunity to encourage and to leadership. What’s happening on the Envirotown front THE Lincoln Envirotown Trust (LET) is soon to be celebrating with responsible businesses. There will be three celebrations this year for businesses that show environmentally sustainable practices with complimentary drinks and refreshments: October 19 and 25 for Rolleston and Lincoln and November 1 for the Ellesmere area. Awards will be presented by the mayor, Kelvin Coe and there will be speakers (Selwyn MP Amy Adams at Rolleston, Meadow Mushrooms chief executive John Barnes at
Lincoln and a yet to be arranged Ellesmere speaker). Businesses with awards of silver and above will have a free advertising spot on the LET website. People looking for environmentally sustainable businesses in their area can search this database. Businesses are provided with help to improve their practices to save money and reduce their impact on the environment. The public are welcome to attend but need to contact us to

Hart walker brings joy for young Eric Little River Guides Bev Blanche
THE Lions Club of Selwyn members have not been letting the grass grow under their feet during the winter. Despite having to postpone the Dunsandel mid-winter charity bowling tournament because of inclement weather, the event got underway on a recent Sunday afternoon. Cold temperatures meant the games finished early, but everyone had a good time. This year the charity was the Ellesmere St John Ambulance, a cause that is close to everyone’s hearts as was evident by the donations
received from many individuals and firms. Although at this stage the final total raised is not known, the club is confident it can present the St John committee with a worthy sum. Also, some members were able to be present when our little ‘patient’ had his final measuring for his Hart Walker, a device that has enabled Eric, a 9-yearold Christchurch boy, to stand for the first time. With joy on his face and to the emotional delight of his family and our members, Eric managed two steps unaided and has gone home with his
‘new life’ before him and his much valued Hart Walker. We all know he will continue to improve. The club meets socially on the second Tuesday at the Springston Hotel where we usually have an entertaining speaker. At the last meeting we were able to welcome back an old member, Shelia Chambers, and a new member, Hilda Solis, to the club and we know they will be an asset to Lions. Six students were chosen to present their work to the entire Pukeko team. Jessie McKee, right, had created a mathematical artwork using symmetry and size ordering, while Ezra Sands presented and demonstrated Morra, a traditional Italian maths game. James Collier and Daniel Dachs presented their magnetic toy challenges. James’ was called Magnetic Fishing and Daniel’s was called Knights of the Magnetic Table. Angus Turnham had conducted a weather study using a homemade barometer, and Matthew O’Donnell presented his experiment testing the density of liquids.

IN his most recent novel, Gold, Mr Cleave tackled the subject of Olympic cycling. To research the book, he found an elite cycling team that would let him train with them. Stressing that he was by no means an elite athlete himself, Mr Cleave said going through the same regimen helped him gain a deeper understanding of the athletes’ lives and psyches. “I think of what I do as halfway between fiction and reportage,” he said. In writing Gold, he wanted to go beyond the questions sportscasters generally ask athletes in postcompetition glory. “I prefer to ask them a question at six in the morning two years ahead [of the Olympics],” he said, such as “What happened to you when you were six years old that made you hate losing?” In his previous work, he gained a reputation for tackling controversial territory. “My stuff is like Marmite, you either love it or hate it,” he said. His novel The Other Hand told the story of a Nigerian asylum seeker caught up in the UK immigration system. He interviewed two dozen refugees and learned about the ongoing conflict in Nigeria, where Western oil companies drill. People are killed, displaced, and many end up in the UK seeking asylum. The book is shocking, and public reactions to it have covered the range from very positive to strongly against. But most importantly to Mr Cleave, it has got people talking about asylum

BITTEN by the lifelong learning bug as a young man, Lincoln University’s retired Dean of Commerce, Dr Patrick Aldwell, confesses he could easily have been seen as a “professional student” in his youth and a “collector of degrees” as he has four of them plus a diploma. His career, however, speaks otherwise. Well equipped with academic qualifications earned at top universities in three different countries, he has been able to bring a special blend of academic accomplishment, wide knowledge and strong personal and inter-personal organisational skills to his 14 years on the staff at Lincoln University. Long-time colleague associate Professor Charles Lamb, now director of Lincoln University’s Telford Division, said Dr Aldwell’s stand-out quality was his “genuine empathy for his staff”. That was a “huge asset” as a faculty head, he said. Another quality was his ability to manage change. From a diploma student, Dr Aldwell moved on to degree studies at Massey University and completed conjoint qualifications in education and regional economics. From there he took up a post with the Forest Research Institute in Rotorua as a scientist in the Trade, Marketing and Economics Group. While there he was awarded a scholarship to study for a PhD at the University of Washington in the United States of America and later for an MBA at Monash University, Australia. Dr Aldwell’s return to Lincoln as a staff member was triggered in the 1990s by a chance meeting with the university’s Professor of Landscape Architecture, Simon Swaffield, in Hawke’s Bay where Dr Aldwell was studying

the longer-term impacts of Cyclone Bola on the regional economy. Professor Swaffield and the then director of the Centre for Resource Management, the late Dr John Hayward, were instrumental in convincing Dr Aldwell to come and work at Lincoln. The Faculty of Commerce covers a diverse range of subjects and Dr Aldwell said it had been an interesting but satisfying and rewarding job to “manage and harmonise all the strands”. “The dean’s position is something of a lightning rod. It has been a challenge, but a joy.”
‘Exceptional’ students receive Chinese Government scholarships TWO Lincoln University research students from China, who graduated with doctorates this year and paid their own way through their courses, have been rewarded with cash scholarships from the Chinese Government. Dr Hong Ling from Hunan Province and Dr Ji (George) Wu from Beijing received the scholarships at a ceremony in their honour on the Lincoln University campus last month, hosted by the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Christchurch.
The Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad scholarships are elite awards and only 10 earlier presentations have been made in New Zealand since the programme was established in 2003. Two of the earlier 10 have been won by Lincoln University graduates, including the programme’s first award to a New Zealandbased student, Dr Fujun Shen, in 2007. Dr Ling’s research for her PhD in Computational Systems Biology had contributed to possible ways for developing

cancer treatments and she has since won a position at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, where she will start in October. She said the award was “the culmination of all my marks and I dedicate it with particular thanks to my aunty, Lorna Xiaole, who has given me so much support, and my husband Hao Li and family”. After completing his PHD in finance at Lincoln, Dr Wu has now been appointed as an assistant professor in finance at Xiamen University in Fujian province, a leading university in China, in accounting and finance studies.
He said his award belonged to the group of people behind him, led by his supervisor Dr Nartea and co-supervisor Professor Gan. “Sometimes over the past 10 years at Lincoln University I thought I would like to give up and go home, but late at night I would see the lights still on in Professor Gan’s office and it encouraged me to continue.” Lincoln University’s vice-chancellor Dr Andrew West described the two scholarship winners as “exceptional young researchers” who had shown what could be achieved early in an academic career through hard work and dedication.

Youth whet appetite for water management NINE Christchurch youth aged between 14 and 24 recently attended a two-day hui to get involved in local water management. The hui was organised by Environment Canterbury (ECan) in conjunction with the Canterbury Water Christchurch – West Melton Zone Committee. ECan youth engagement team leader Sian Carvell said the goals and values of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) required young people to be involved. “Much of the work being done by each of Canterbury’s 10 zone committees on improving local water management will benefit our children and their children. For this reason it is vital we get young people involved in the process now and ensure they have the information and the interest to contribute.” On the first day of the hui the nine participants, from Hillmorton High School, Getting involved: Christchurch students visited The Groynes as part of a hui on water management. Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti, CPIT, Lincoln University and the University the night on the marae. The next day the group was welcomed by of Canterbury, undertook a full-day field trip to visit significant sites for water management in Environment Canterbury Commissioner David Caygill and heard from the Ministry of Youth Christchurch and hear from local experts. Broadfield blow Lincoln away in final Karen Pasco
A BURGUNDY bombardment was the winning formula for Broadfield A when it took on Lincoln A in the premier netball final at Lincoln on Saturday. The full court pressure was applied right from the starting whistle and although Lincoln scored two successive goals in the opening minutes, it was to be the only time the team took the lead in the entire game. Broadfield knew it had to have a strong start if it had any chance of winning against a more experienced Lincoln line-up. There was no evidence of pre-game nerves for the team, whose complete focus was on shutting down the opposition. Unfortunately for Lincoln the back injury to prominent defender Claire Tait, who was later taken away in an ambulance, also took its toll. Although not lacking in strength on the bench, the blow must have been a hard one to take and obviously impacted on the game. The first quarter finished with Broadfield four goals up, 12-8. Lincoln did make a concerted effort in the second and third quarters to try and counteract the Broadfield offensive and came within three goals at the beginning of the third quarter. However, it was enough incentive for Broadfield to take notice, taking off on a fivegoal rampage just to make certain Lincoln knew it was defiant in its ambition. The final 15 minutes were a bit of a nonevent, it almost seemed as if Lincoln had given up – only able to provide six goals in reply to Broadfield’s 13. The final score 48-29. An outstanding display from Broadfield’s centre Laura Lowe and the tireless tenacity of goal keep Moniek van Rossum were the standout features of the team’s performance. Unfortunately, van Rossum wasn’t even there to receive the trophy – having to get back to the

task of milking cows straight after the game. Before the game, Lincoln attacker Vanessa Robinson commented how it had been 20 years since Lincoln had last held up the trophy – she would know as she was a member of that winning team. However, talk on the sideline among the Broadfield stalwarts after the game revealed that no-one could recollect Broadfield having ever won the competition – a result which would have made the bubbles taste all the sweeter at the after-match celebrations. In the primary one final, the curtain-raiser to the premier game, it was a more even and exciting display. The two teams, which had met only a few weeks previously, were goal for goal in the first quarter with the scores tied at 8-all after
the first spell. Rolleston managed to take hold in the second and third quarters putting up a more consistent display. Halswell really just left its run too late, and although the team was able to finish strongly, it was just too little, too late – with the final score 28-23. It was a hard-fought final, particularly the final quarter, and I thank St Nicholas for their sportsmanship. “My thanks have to go to the players, the support team and Lincoln University staff and facilities for their ongoing commitment. It’s been an incredible season and one we will celebrate fittingly,” she said. The Lincoln University Netball Club is an open netball club that started in 2000 with one team playing in Christchurch. The club has grown over the years and in 2012 it had seven teams, six in Christchurch and one in Selwyn, playing competitive and social netball. The premier netball team has won the championship three times in the past four years.
LINCOLN University’s premier netball team has won the 2012 Christchurch Netball Centre Premier Championship, beating St Nicholas 53-41, for the second year running. “To win the championship two years running is an exceptional achievement and even more so to have lost only a single game in that time,” Lincoln University vice-chancellor Dr Andrew West said. “Our players put their hearts and souls into the game last night and I congratulate them, the coach and the support team for a superb effort.” For Bev Gordon, it had been a rewarding season as a first -year coach. “I couldn’t be any happier with the success of the team this year. “We went into this season with a new coach,
