Iconic race finish stays at pier BY KYLE KNOWLES

New Brighton will again be home to the finish line of the Coast to Coast in 2016 and beyond. This year was the first time the famous race finished in New Brighton after previously ending in Sumner. The finish line will be set up outside the New Brighton Library by the pier on the weekend of February 12, 2016. Organisers have also locked in New Brighton past 2016 but could not confirm for how many years. New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Zaanen said it was “wicked.”

Take a kid to footy – p2

Mr Zaanen was a big part of this year’s event, he was the transition manager at the finish line. He said it was a big part of the summer events calendar for the suburb and to have it confirmed the Coast to Coast was returning was a massive boost. “The events calendar we’re working on at the moment is fantastic. New Brighton is the place to be and is the new events centre outside of the city centre. It’s exciting to have so many events coming to New Brighton and obviously a lot of local ones are going gangbusters too. So to have more events is good.” •Turn to page 2

Taking the kids to footy a good choice Canterbury rugby’s popular Take a Kid to Footy ticket deal is back for the 2015 ITM Cup season thanks to new sponsor, Fresh Choice. Fresh Choice will be the official naming rights sponsor for Take a Kid to Footy for at least the next three years. Take a Kid to Footy tickets are $14 (plus service fee) for one adult and one child. Each additional child is $5.50 each. There are dedicated Take a Kid to Footy seating areas at AMI Stadium and children get a free goody bag filled with snacks, a drink and a collectable for each Canterbury home game. Tickets will go on public sale for the ITM Cup on Monday for individual games. Canterbury’s first home game is against Counties Manukau on Sunday, August 23 (4.35pm). Canterbury Rugby chief executive Hamish Riach said the union is delighted to have a successful and locally-focused brand like Fresh Choice on board. “Take a Kid to Footy is such an important product for us because it provides an affordable way for families to get along to the Canterbury games, and FreshChoice is a

Iconic race finish stays at pier •From page 1 Mr Zaanen said the event worked well in New Brighton as both the event and the suburb are going through a rejuvenation process. “That’s such a big part of it, the vision of rejuvenation for New Brighton, and the Coast to Coast, with both in a rejuvenating process. There is a lot of energy and effort in doing both and that’s bloody exciting.” There are already plans to improve the finish line experience but details on those improvements were not available. Entries are already open for next year’s Coast to Coast with prizes up for grabs for people who enter before July 31 including a $5000 sponsorship package. Organisers have also added a school category with the minimum age being lowered to 14. The new category is a team event for three people. Suspects identified BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

Police say they have identified three suspected shoplifters a Dallington liquor store manager locked in his premises. Detective Wayne Boyd told the Pegasus Post that they were closing in on a 17 and 18-year-old, and a man in his 40s. They have been identified from security camera footage from the Woodham Rd Liquor Store. On Wednesday three men allegedly stole a bottle of vodka from Mr Singh’s premises, before being locked in, and then breaking out of the store. Mr Singh said: “I thought if I locked the doors, they would be frightened and give me back the bottle.” But the men disappeared with the vodka after one of the men was alleged to have threatened Mr Singh with a knife. On Thursday Detective Boyd said police expected to find two of the suspects “in the coming days.” “The shop had really good CCTV footage, which enabled us to identify them (the suspects). I wish every dairy and liquor store had CCTV as good as that.”

The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board has been recommended to grant the Portsmouth St Kidsfirst Kindergarten $2960 to go towards their food Friday programme. The kindergarten initially requested $5480 for the programme from the board’s discretionary response fund. $15,000 has also been recommended to be granted to the New Brighton Project group for wages.

Stand-downs tool to help students BY KYLE KNOWLES

HELPING HAND: The Westpac Resuce Helicopter in action.

$250,000 raised for Canty rescue chopper

This year’s Westpac Chopper Appeal has raised more than $250,000 for Canterbury’s rescue helicopter. This is part of $1.5m raised across the country. All donations from the Westpac Chopper Appeal are distributed back to the 16 rescue helicopter services across the country, meaning money raised locally, stays local. Westpac’s director of corporate affairs, Sue Foley, said the total raised is an outstanding effort. “New Zealanders have once again shown their support rallying behind their local rescue helicopters,” said Ms Foley.

“We’d like to thank all of those who generously dug deep and donated, along with everyone who was involved in the fundraising events in their communities. “The helicopters provide such a vital service that saves lives on a daily basis. It’s important for us to continue to play our part and raise awareness as well as much-needed funds to keep them in the air.” Westpac employees were also crucial to the success of this year’s result with fundraising initiatives organised around the country as well as hitting the streets to collect $128,000 on the nationwide Chopper Street Appeal day.

Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust chairman, Murray Weakley, said: “We are continually overwhelmed by the generosity of locals and could not be prouder to be part of this community. We would like to thank every person and group who gave as well as the support from Westpac through the chopper appeal every year. Every donation makes a big difference to help us keep doing what we do and we are very grateful.” Donations are welcome throughout the year and can be made at www.chopperappeal. co.nz or any Westpac branch.

Shirley Boys’ High principal John Laurenson says stand-downs are used to help students at the school. Last week the Pegasus Post revealed east Christchurch schools’ suspension statistics for 2014. The figures showed in 2014 Shirley Boys’ stood down 38 students, suspended 11, excluded four and expelled one. This is compared with 45 stood down in 2013, 11 suspended and three excluded. Mr Laurenson (right) said like all schools he would like to see no students taken out of school but sometimes these are tools that are used to help students. “It allows us to bring in wrap around services and social welfare services to help students. Things have changed, once upon a time we got rid of the problem but now we deal with it differently. A stand-down is one weapon of an arsenal of weapons we use to get things sorted out.” He said of a school of about 1250 to only have 38 stand-downs, which is only three per cent of the roll, was very good. “They are not necessarily bad kids. The main reason for a standdown is it’s a clear line in the sand, it allows time for kids to get out of the environment where they could

be leading other children. It’s not he’s a bad kid, it’s just a kid that needs correction. Every single human being at some stage needs to be corrected”. Mr Laurenson said the one expelled student was helped into a new school instead of simply being turfed out of the education system. Schools are not obliged to find a student over 16 years of age a new school but in this case Mr Laurenson said Shirley Boys’ did. This is the definition of an expulsion where as an exclusion means the school is obliged to find that student a new school because they are under 16. “While it may be that some schools try and remove difficult students as soon as they turn 16, in our case we try and meet our social and educational obligations, by retaining students.”

Dairy parking restrictions looked at BY KYLE KNOWLES A Burwood dairy owner is fed up with people parking in front of his store all day and has successfully lobbied for parking restrictions to be considered. Ever since the redevelopment of Burwood Hospital begun, owner Dipak Kalidas has had to put up with cars using the parking bay outside his Burwood Foodmarket as an all-day car park. He believes it is construction workers at the hospital who are parking there.

He said it was annoying and has cost his business money. “There’s plenty of parking further away but I don’t know why they park here. There’s always cars parked there.” He said customers have nowhere to park and will drive straight past. Mr Kalidas asked the city council for help but nothing could be done initially. He has opened up the back of the dairy to allow customers to park there but said it wasn’t as easy for customers to simply pull

into the bay. The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board will now consider whether to approve 10min parking restrictions in the parking bay outside the dairy. Mr Kalidas was relieved the restrictions were being considered. “Yeah, really happy because this will continue to happen until the hospital is built.” It has been recommended the community board approve the restrictions for the parking bay at tonight’s (Monday) meeting. It will cost $300 to install the signs.

Project director, Bryan Spinks said parking at Burwood Hospital is for staff, patients and their families. “It is a contractual requirement that contractors are not allowed to park in the staff or public parks on the site. However, some additional temporary parking has been made for some of the contractors and others are parking on the roads.” He said the Canterbury District Health Board had not received any complaints about contractors parking in surrounding areas.

Anger over plans for Woolston post shop BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Woolston business owners and residents are outraged at plans to close the area’s post shop. Woolston Auto Surgery owner Roydon Smart said it seemed “crazy” to close the Ferry Rd shop because it served a lot of people. “The Woolston post shop is so busy, often it’s queued out onto the footpath.” Earlier this month, New Zealand Post revealed plans to expand postal and banking services in Ferrymead, which will see the Woolston branch close. NZ Post is looking for a tenant to fill the post shop building to run the postal services, but people wanting to use banking services and bill pay will have to travel to Ferrymead or Eastgate mall. Mr Smart has been in contact with Kiwibank and NZ Post to outline his concerns and has been handing out pamphlets to local business owners and residents to make them aware of what is happening. “I’ve had a business here since 1979, now they are moving the post office; always used this one. Now I’ll have to drive to do my banking, because with money you have to take it to the bank. It’s a super busy post office, it all adds up to be a stupid, selfish decision.”

Community to benefit from food factory The Food Factory Shop in Wainoni and Ferrymead is giving back to its community by donating $600 every month to local groups, organisations and individuals. The shops, started its Our Community fundraising scheme in May. Every month, jars are displayed in both shops, each representing a group. Any time a customer makes a purchase, they are given a token to vote. The customer then chooses who they want to support by placing the token in one of the jars. At the end of the month, the tokens are counted to see which group comes in first, second and third. Birthright Christchurch, an organisation that supports single

parents and caregivers, had the most tokens in June, winning $300. Manager Rhodora Sagles said it was wonderful to receive the donation. “The money will go towards our parents’ groups, which we facilitate twice a year. Speakers from various agencies share new practical skills and information. The sessions have been very helpful to single parents because they offer support and friendship, all while learning new things.” The Food Factory Shops are bakery and food outlets, which sell seconds, trials, dated, short dated, cancelled export orders and deleted line products from Baker

New netball gear for Linwood College Linwood College scored big this season, with new gear for the school’s growing number of netball players thanks to the ANZ netball grant scheme. Teacher in charge of netball, Courtney Flay, says the grant, which includes 20 balls, will be a big help for the school’s four new netball teams. “Netball was non-existent when I took over the project in 2014. That year, we started the season with one team and now, after lots of hard work, we’ve got five. “We’re really excited that the sport is growing so quickly but it’s tough to keep up with the demand for new gear. These new netballs will really help the play-

ANZ branch manager Nathan Harman says the programme was

launched in 2012 to support fans and help netballers get to the next level in the game. “Netball is one of the country’s most popular sports with tens of thousands of players at schools, clubs and social teams across the country.

“It’s about inspiring players to go further. This might involve kitting out a team with new gear or uniforms, helping players get to an ANZ Championship match to see the action up close this season, or even getting a few professionals to visit their school or club to host a training session – that’s bound to be a life-changing experience for some of our future netballing stars. “We’re really happy to help Linwood College to provide enough gear for its growing number of netball players.” Applications to the ANZ Netball Grant Scheme are now closed. Winners can be viewed at anzcourtside.co.nz.

Ronald McDonald’s new board member A Christchurch lawyer has been appointed as the newest member of the Ronald McDonald House South Island’s board table. Julie Hands has been bestowed the Institute of Directors’ First Steps in Governance Award, giving her an internship position on the charity’s board. Institute of Directors’ Canterbury branch chair Janice Fredric said the judges were impressed by Ms Hands’ ambition, focus and leadership potential. “Julie is an exceptional young woman who has already taken on a range of leadership roles in both her career and the community. Her breadth of skill and empathy for the cause will make her a real asset to the Ronald McDonald House South Island board.” Ms Hands, a resource management and commercial solicitor for Duncan Cotterill, says the award is an honour. “The board seems as though it has a great dynamic and there’s a lot of diverse knowledge and experience there. I’m excited to learn from them and hope this will be the first step in a long governance career.” Ms Hands will also receive mentoring from an experienced director, $810 toward Institute of Directors’ professional development courses, and a one-year membership of the Institute of Directors.

Extreme cold causes problems BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER The extreme frosts of the last week have resulted in a number of calls to properties where hot water cylinders have leaked and caused flooding in the building or where sprinkler systems have frozen solid and leaked. I can certainly understand, turning the hot water tap on in the kitchen at home first thing in the morning has resulted in slushy ice in the sink. We were fortunate enough though not to have our pipes freeze solid enough to split. There were also a number of car crashes caused by black ice. If it looks wet at all on those -5 deg C mornings then the road is almost certainly frozen solid. We all need to drive accordingly. It’s probably therefore a good time to mention the metre/heater rule again. This is a mantra the Fire Service has invented to give a rule of thumb about anything combustible near to something that could set it on fire. The drying of clothing in front of a fireplace or heater is fine except for the human tendency to want things to happen quickly causes us to place the damp clothes too close. We like to see the steam rise. Then the phone goes, or tea needs to be cooked or the kids do what kids do and attract our attention. Placed closer than a metre that steam will rise until no moisture is left. The clothing will keep on heating. It might scorch. It might ignite. The metre/heater rule simply saves this from happening.

Family dental practice expands its services

Keeping families’ teeth healthy has been the focus of QE2 Dental in Parklands for the last 20 years.

Q

E2 Dental works hard to provide quality dentistry at an affordable price. This has seen the practice grow from one surgery and one dentist 20 years ago to today’s four surgeries and four dentists plus a hygienist. Recently, Sene Ioane, an experienced and well-liked dentist, has joined the team. Sene brings a wealth of experience gained in New Zealand and Australia. She also works in the hospital and is used to dealing with patients with complex medical problems.

If you require a dental checkup as part of your medical treatment, Sene is right up-to-date on your requirements. Michelle De Thierry, a therapist/hygienist, has also recently joined the practice, primarily as a hygienist. She brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the practice, and her job is to keep teeth and gums in tiptop shape and help you do the same. This well-established family practice offers a full range of dental services, including fillings, crowns, bridges and implants.

New diabetes exercise group starts in Christchurch

T

ype 2 diabetes is becoming a major health issue for New Zealand, with obesity recognised as one of its most preventable causes. According to a Diabetes NZ spokeswoman, “While there is no silver bullet, we do know we can prevent obesity through lifestyle and exercise.” For their part, the team at Physical Sense Gym & Physio also recognise that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the two key factors underpinning successful weight loss and have developed a programme specially designed for diabetes clients. It is proving popular with people across a wide age range (20 to 70), including many who are overweight or severely obese. The programme comprises a circuit that allows the clients to do the exercises at their own pace, without any pressure to keep up, combined with advice from the community diabetes team who support them through the necessary changes to their food habits. “The advantage for these clients is that we are a normal public gym, so our diabetes clients are mixing with people who don’t have health conditions,” team member Ietje van Stolk says. “And by coming to the gym, our diabetes clients are getting out of the house and are meeting other people including people with the same issues and weight problems as they have, and being physically active is very motivating. They encourage each other and there is plenty of fun and humour between themselves and with the instructors, who are there to lean on and help everyone reach their goals.” Medical research shows participation in regular exercise gets the heart rate up, helps strengthen muscles, improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, Ietje points out. It also positively affects lipids and blood pressure, reduces the risk of cardiovascular events and improves quality of life. Physical Sense Gym & Physio has had many positive comments

True

Physical Sense Gym & Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham from clients about the programme. One, who goes six times a week, says he loves having somewhere to go and hates the days he is not going to the gym. Another says, “It’s the only thing I have for me, and I have improved my eating habits.” Others have found walking easier and have increased energy and fitness. To encourage those on limited income, the first four sessions are free, and if clients have WINZ support the programme usually remains free, Ietje says. Attending the gym is as easy as a bus ride which stops right at the front door. There is also plenty of parking available should you choose to drive. Physical Sense Gym & Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. Phone 377 2577.

HEALTH Tuesday

Creating smiles for cancer patients GL Health Cancer has the ability to rob those affected of more than their physical health. “I am a ‘people person’ with an outgoing personality. Well, I used to be. When I was diagnosed with cancer, my demeanour changed, and it wasn’t long before my treatment became a lonely and nerveracking journey,” says Miretta, a Look Good Feel Better workshop participant. That’s why Look Good Feel Better exists. The national charity supports Kiwis at a time when they need it most, by providing an opportunity for participants to claim back their personality beyond being a cancer patient - and learn practical tools to combat the ongoing visual and emotional effects of therapy. “It truly was a morale-boosting makeover, I felt like one of the group instead of a patient. It boosted and improved my selfesteem – and felt so darn good!” Miretta says. “It’s often the first time many women will be seen by others without their wig or be touched by a person that isn’t doing so for medical purposes,” Clare O’Higgins, Look Good Feel Better’s general manager, says. “I rarely let people get close, other than those who are dear to me, but the women there all

1 in 2 people deficient in vitamin B12

E

merging research has shown as many as 50 per cent of older adults and as many as 25 per cent of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12. B12 is essential for energy production, cell health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and repair and prevention of homocysteine - a serious cardiovascular risk factor that is known to cause damage and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a 34 per cent decrease risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40+ who supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk of hearing loss in subjects in their

60s who were low in B12. The reason so many people lack B12 seems to be due to our body’s inability to absorb it as we age, as the digestive system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other drugs further reduce B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in the form of Methylcobalamin sublingual tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and thru bypassing the digestive tract have been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in the body. Further info is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, phone 388 5757. We are always happy to help!

Tiny Tots Nursery and Preschool Family business looking after our community

T

iny Tots Nursery and Preschool is a privately-owned and familyoperated centre. We provide a safe and secure environment in which children can learn, create and grow to the best of their abilities. Teachers observe the children through their play, and then incorporate those interests into an individual programme. This helps the children to extend on their learning and enhances their development for the future.

Tiny Tots has an open plan environment both indoors and out, and seeks to provide high quality equipment, resources and facilities to support your child’s learning and development. We like to encourage parents to spend time with their children in the centre to help them settle in, and to share experiences together and to find out how the centre operates during the day. Enquiries welcome through a visit at 148 England St, Linwood, or phone 389 6851.

Start kids young at Lindisfarne

L

indisfarne was established in 1987 and is a small privately run nursery school. The separate nursery building caters for up to 14 babies, and the preschool is licensed for up to 36 children. We pride ourselves on providing as much a home-like environment as possible for all of the children who attend Lindisfarne. Our team consists of all trained and registered teachers, a teacher’s aide, a teaching assistant, and a cook and cleaner. We pride ourselves on being a multicultural centre, both through the nationalities of the children who attend and the nationalities of our teaching staff. The large private play area allows the children to engage in lots of physical activities as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well prepared to start primary school.

NEED CHILDCARE? • Fully qualified, registered and experienced teachers • Free ECE and subsidies available • Quality programmes and care for your child’s individual needs to reach their full potential.

It’s never too late for music

W

hen Robert Perks MBE founded the Christchurch School of Music in 1955, he was very much focused on providing quality music education to primary-aged students, but we know he’d be pleased to see that CSM now caters for students aged from two to 92. Adults of all ages and abilities are now an integral part of the CSM community and our varied programmes offer something for everyone. Many of our adult students enjoy weekly instrumental, theory or vocal lessons, but we also offer fortnightly options or blocks

of lessons to cater for students whose lives are too busy to cope with a weekly lesson. At CSM, we encourage our students to play in an orchestra or ensemble as soon as they feel ready. Playing with others is great fun and helps students to feel a part of our fabulous musical community. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or an experienced player, CSM can offer you the chance to play in an orchestra, band or one of our many ensembles. Visit www.csm.org.nz, or phone the office on 366 1711 to find out what CSM can offer you.

Get rid of dampness in your house

Stack Electrical

Now with the colder and wetter weather on its way, homeowners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy for their families throughout winter.

R

ising damp is an issue that affects many of our older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp, which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are especially vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands the problems caused by rising damp and are there to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber floored home. Specially adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications, it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently is that many owners of properties which had underfloor foam concrete installed, reported that it also provided protection against

o content have my owners been with this lovely family residence – it’s been their happy home for 20 wonderful years. The time for a change has come, and the opportunity for a lucky new family to make it their own is now presented. Idyllically, located for weekend pursuits, the Heathcote River and Hills with their walkways and cycle tracks are right on the doorstep, while commuters will equally enjoy the short 10-minute drive to the four avenues. The home boasts a generous 250-squaremetre floorplan and solid, permanent material brick construction with Masada cladding on the second level. A home for living and entertaining, living spaces are flexible and fluid - an open plan kitchen/dining room and a family zone with two lounges - each interconnecting and opening out to the wrap-around grounds. The kitchen benefits from engineered stone worktops, wall oven, Bosch dishwasher, good cupboard space and an inviting breakfast bar. There are four great sized double bedrooms on offer, serviced by three bathrooms to ensure the preschool/work rush runs as smoothly as possible. The master bedroom is particularly well-proportioned, the space accentuated by the high pitched roof with wooden beams. Family comfort and convenience is ensured with undertile heating and heat pumps, a vacuum system, an internal access garage, new carpets and being repainted throughout. The easy care section offers a selection of covered and uncovered patio areas, attractive

perimeter planting, new pathways and driveways, and off-street parking. With all your tick boxes rolled into one fabulous package, be quick to secure – for definite sale on or before auction day! Open days: Saturday and Sunday 12pm to 12.45pm. See you at the open homes or for a private viewing appointment, call contact Deb Harvey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 027 220 6565.

Some people think an oil and filter change is servicing their car. We see a number of customers who are getting 12 minute oil and filter changes done and think their car has been serviced. Certainly this part of the service is better than nothing. I recommend that our fully trained mechanics service your vehicle. If you really want the quick alternative, we will match the price using cheaper oil and filters. Give me a call and I will be happy to discuss the alternative. Remember we service air conditioners, do wheel alignments and use the latest diagnostic equipment. Nick and his team would like to thank all their customers for their continuing support, as well as extending a warm welcome to all new clients.
