THE latest 74 graduates of the Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) programme proudly marched out in front of friends and family at Burnham Military Camp on Saturday. The LSV programme, a six-week residential course providing life skills to unemployed young people, is run by the New Zealand Defence Force on behalf of Work and Income and is funded by the Ministry of Social Development. Trainees have little free time during the course as they undergo a programme of intensive lectures, workshops and physical activities designed to develop core values of respect, teamwork and trust to boost selfconfidence and self-esteem. The activities are geared to assist participants to confidently enter the workforce and to arm them with life skills for the future. Trainee Amokura Tahi said it was “a real honour” to be picked to lead the haka at the march. “At first the course was really hard; waking up early, being away from home, studying

and all the physical training. But once you get into it, it all gets easier.” The officer commanding this course, Major Ian Lattimore, said very noticeable changes could be seen in volunteers at the end of the programme. “They have learned to work with others and to push themselves beyond what they thought they could Stepping up: Trainee Amokura Tahi leads the haka during the LSV graduation march at Burnham Military Camp on Saturday. or should do prior to eye.” coming. New dog bylaw recommended for approval FOLLOWING public consultation and the consideration of a large number of submissions, a Selwyn District Council working party has recommended a new dog control bylaw for approval. The proposed bylaw allows for the use of

reserves for dogs to be exercised off a leash when they are not in use for sporting or other public events. The working party hopes the changes will result in the greater use of reserves and more options for dog owners to exercise their animals.

Although a number of submitters did not support the change, the working party believes that the bylaw strikes a reasonable balance in the use of public areas by sporting bodies and other users including the large number of dog owners (more than 6000) in the district. Under the proposed bylaw dogs will be prohibited from reserves when they are being used for public events. This includes all marked playing fields and a five-metre perimeter around them. To address the potential issue of dog fouling, a number of other actions have been recommended in conjunction with the proposed changes, including additional signage, waste bins, low tolerance stance to enforcement, education and monitoring.

Conceived and delivered The Tai Tapu Bush THE final 1850 seedlings at ‘Tai Tapu Bush’ were planted by volunteers on Sunday, cementing a legacy that began three years ago with the collection of kaihikatea and pokaka seed from Riccarton Bush, the last lowland remnant of podocarp forest on the lower Canterbury Plains. This seed, along with 20 other local native species, was propagated by Southern Woods Nursery and 5500 plants were grown for the project. The project is not only helping with plant diversity but will also attract native fauna, assist in improving water quality, and is intended to be a recreation destination for the people of Canterbury. As the bush develops, understory plants will be introduced, along with walking tracks

and boardwalks in the wetter areas. The site, located within the Rhodes Park Reserve, is visible across the Halswell River to drivers passing along Old Tai Tapu Rd between the pub and the domain entrance. The planting is now completed thanks to the work of the local volunteers on Sunday and the last few put in by restoration specialist Stephen Brailsford on Monday. Project co-ordinator Murray Mannall thanked the “hundreds of volunteers who put in countless hours to get us this far” as well as various organisations that had given support, including the Rhodes Park Reserve Board, Selwyn District Council, Ngai Tahu, Waihora Ellesmere Trust, the Student Volunteer Army, Tai Tapu School, Tai Tapu Play Centre and Environment Canterbury.

Springston children win robotics prize Tom Doudney

PLAYING around with Lego won’t usually get you very far in life but it’s helped a group of Springston School pupils win second place in the national finals of the First Lego League robotics competition held in Auckland on Saturday. The competition involved building and programming a robot, using Lego Mindstorm components, to score points on a themed playing surface. It also involved problem solving, research presentations and interviews.

Creating an innovative solution to a problem is an integral part of the First Lego League concept and this year’s challenge was based on problems faced by senior citizens. The ‘Springston Strikers’ earned their place in the national finals after winning the regional competition held at Chisnallwood Intermediate the previous weekend. Springston School teacher Carol Kendall said they were thrilled at what the group had achieved. Second place: The Springston Strikers First Lego League team with the medals and trophy they were awarded for finishing second. The Christmas rush FOR most of us, once we hit Show Week the year has got to the point whereby it is a downward slide to Christmas. Tradespeople are hassled to within an inch of their patience to get jobs finished by Christmas, and of course the shops are screaming at you to buy from them. I’m glad to say that John Key doesn’t pardon a couple of pigs before Christmas, saving them from becoming hams as the US President did for two turkeys in the build-up to their Thanksgiving celebrations (one has to ask who was the biggest turkey). But while the urban folk are winding themselves up tighter than a spring, drinking with people they wouldn’t normally associate with and gorging themselves on food that they wouldn’t normally consider eating, the farming folk are simply being farming folk. Yes, there are some things that are measured

by that magic date of December 25. Things like getting the majority of the lambs off to the processing plant, and to get a certain amount of hay or silage processed ready for the next dry spell or the following winter. Then there’s what happens after that oh so important day of the year. While the city folk head off to camp or caravan along the shore of a lake somewhere to sleep on a single camp stretcher or blowup mattress, the country folk snuggle into their normal and very comfortable beds. While the city folk eat food off their knees while balancing in a camp chair, having cooked it on a gas cooker or mobile barbecue, the country folk are cooking in a fully equipped kitchen and eating on their deck at a stable table with fabulous views of their establishment. While the city folk get a waft of insect repellent every time their hand gets anywhere

Philip Beadle: Works in oil, water colour, drypoint and monotype. He enjoys working with form, colour and light, especially low winter and evening light which facillitates the wide tonal range in which he relishes. Philip’s immediate environment in Christchurch, the city scapes, Canterbury plains and mountains are a source of inspiration. He meets regularly with a life drawing group and the female nude forms a large part of his work.

Hope Gibbons: Hope Gibbons is a contemporary New Zealand painter with works held in private collections here and throughout the world. The current body of works explores the materiality of paint - it pushes the boundaries of traditional painting practice and techniques. It exploits the use of paint, rust, inks, leaf and varnish. This work is ever-changing and currently becoming bolder, colourful and more gestural, however the recurring reference back to the land is now becoming evident.

Hope Gibbons

Wendy Wadworth: These latest works are titled “Wilderness”. The method of painting on glass is not new to New Zealand as quite a few artists have on and off painted on glass. But I first read about this technique in a book about Eastern European Artists from the” Naive tradition” of painting. I particularly enjoy the surprise and the jewel affect /outcome. Of course, over the years I have painted on canvas and hardboard, but for now, I am interested in using glass. Jill Perrott: Jill Perrott’s professional journey as an artist started in the early nineties when her three children had flapped their wings and mostly flown the nest. This exhibition, On to Otago, is built from images from many family holidays over many years to another favourite place, and captures another powerful and varied landscape. Since 1997 Jill has won many awards and she has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand. She has also travelled extensively throughout the country, photographing the landscape for potential paintings. Tania Bostock: Tania Bostock has lived in Nelson for nine years. She has always had an interest in Art and because of the success of her paintings; it was a natural progression to become a full-time Artist. Tania’s paintings have been purchased both nationally and internationally, with some of her paintings finding homes in Australia, Singapore and the U.S.A. For Tania painting is emotive. Something will attract my attention. It might be as simple as the light shining under a door, some flaking paint or rusty metal, but it’s the contrast between light and dark, perfect and corroded, that draws me.

near their face, the country folk are able to enjoy the aroma of their wine and delightful smell of home-cooked meals. While the city folk do their dishes and wash their clothes in basins of warm water, the farming folk wash their dishes and clothes by loading a machine and pushing a button. While city folk catch the odd fish and try to keep it fresh in the heat of the day by pouring ice over it in a ‘chilly bin’ the farming folk store such things in refrigerators. Think warm beer and warm white wine for

the city folk versus chilled from the fridge for the farming folk, and you will certainly have got the message. The farming folk may not have any time off over Christmas, but they are very happy about that.

Land Use Recovery Plan for greater Christchurch ENVIRONMENT Canterbury (ECan) has received a direction from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister, Gerry Brownlee, to develop a Land Use Recovery Plan for greater Christchurch, including the Selwyn District. ECan commissioner Peter Skelton said the council welcomed the opportunity to develop the plan together with its strategic partners, and to include the wider community in that process. “This plan is vital to facilitate earthquake recovery,” Professor Skelton said. “There is an urgent need for greater certainty regarding land use and infrastructure in greater Christchurch. “Significant investment decisions that are currently being made, including by the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team and by the three territorial authorities, will be assisted by the plan. “In addition, the needs of people and businesses seeking to locate and relocate are pressing, and the plan will provide focus for decision-making in this area.” The recovery plan is intended to respond to the impacts of the earthquakes on residential and business land use and provide a platform for transitioning from rebuild to longer-term

planning. “The focus will be on ensuring provision for a diverse range of housing types, infrastructure and transport is integrated and connected to land use, centres of activity are supported and consideration of natural hazards underpins land use decision-making,” Professor Skelton said. The plan will identify the location, type and mix of residential and business activities within specific geographic areas that are necessary for earthquake recovery, and make changes necessary for earthquake recovery to residential and business land-use policy and planning provisions and related funding instruments. Professor Skelton said the partners - Cera, ECan, Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council, Waimakariri District Council, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and the New Zealand Transport Agency - would be talking with key stakeholders before Christmas. A consultation document would be available for public input and a series of workshops in early 2013. A draft recovery plan would be presented to the Minister by the middle of next year, when he would call for written comments before considering the draft plan.

It will not delay the settlement be either complete or well of any building claims, including underway in all suburbs by foundation damage. Christmas. This is 12 weeks All drilling will be completed by March ahead of schedule. next year. When will claims be settled? Our promise is that the worst damaged homes will be repaired by the end of 2013. All other homes will be repaired by the end of 2015. All claims for land damage will be settled by the end of 2014 at the latest.

Why are we drilling? Geotechnical information is needed so that appropriate foundation designs can be developed. This will assist us in settling building and land claims, and allow EQC to establish whether the risk of liquefaction damage in a future earthquake has changed.

How long will drilling take? By the end of December we will have completed foundation damage drilling in all suburbs that require it and have the more specialised land damage investigations well underway. By then over 3,500 holes will have been drilled in all TC3 suburbs. We expect to finish work on drilling for land damage claims by March 2013.

Many people use Microsoft Office to complete their everyday work. Often, they encounter problems that cost them time and cause unnecessary stress. If you’re largely self-taught, or the training that you have had is now a distant memory, the tips and tricks in this column will help you complete your everyday Microsoft Office documents faster and with fewer problems.

View your notes onscreen as you deliver a PowerPoint presentation PRESENTER View in Microsoft PowerPoint lets you have two different versions of your presentation running at the same time: one that the audience sees and one that the presenter sees. The audience version is the standard slide show. The presenter version has the slide show plus a few other helpful things – you can see your speaking notes, you see the actual time and the elapsed time and you have access to all of the slides in the presentation. All of this means that your notes are right beside the current slide, you can keep an eye on time and you can skip some slides or quickly go back to a slide if necessary. Having access to your slides in Presenter View means that you can navigate to any slide without interrupting your presentation. If you have a Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer, setting up for Presenter View is easy. Attach your computer to the data projector or large screen on which the audience will view the slide show. On the keyboard, press +P

( is the Windows key on the bottom row of the keyboard) and click Extend. In PowerPoint, click the Slide Show ribbon tab, click Set Up Slide Show, select Show Presenter View and click OK. Switch to Slide Show view – the slide show runs on the large screen and Presenter View runs on your computer. Now you can see your notes, the slide show, the time and your individual slides all on the same screen while the audience just sees your slide show! Land and Water Forum report released ENVIRONMENT Canterbury (ECan) has welcomed the recommendations in the third and final report from the Land and Water Forum, which was released in Parliament earlier this month; however, IrrigationNZ was less complimentary. “Environment Canterbury has been closely involved in the work of the Land and Water Forum over the past three years, and we have worked alongside the many organisations involved in the development of the latest report,” ECan commissioner David Caygill said. “The report reflects the national consensus on how to reform water regulation and practice in New Zealand. It further defines and highlights the importance of the role regional councils have in managing fresh water. “We will now consider the recommendations in the third report and are looking forward to working with the Government on how to implement them.” However, IrrigationNZ chief executive Andrew Curtis said last-minute changes to the report had weakened its integrity. “IrrigationNZ has spent the past year collaborating in good faith to reach agreement on how water quantity and quality is best managed in New Zealand,” he said. “A package that provided a sound platform to support sustainable future growth in New Zealand had been produced. However, lastminute changes, particularly to the water allocation section, mean IrrigationNZ now questions whether the Land and Water Forum is the collaborative consensus-based process it claims to be.”

While Mr Curtis said there were many positives within the final report, including the need for community-driven catchment-based water management, industry good-management practice as the preferred route, development of community water infrastructure to address over-allocation and a move to plan-led water management, IrrigationNZ had major concerns about parts of the water allocation chapter. “Short durations [of consents] and uncertainty of renewal will produce reactive and high-risk thinking, which creates scenarios prohibitive to capital investment,” he said. “If the community wants environmental gains without job losses or food-price increases, then New Zealand must implement a resource management system that allows for long-term investment and thinking.” Mr Caygill said the collaborative approach to decision-making recommended in the latest report closely aligned with the Canterbury Water Management Strategy. “The Strategy – which was launched in 2009 following years of community and stakeholder discussions – puts decisions on water management into the hands of local communities,” he said. The Land and Water Forum includes around 60 organisations and five iwi with an interest in land use and water management. This includes the agri-business sector, Maori interests, environmentalists, power companies, tourism and recreation, community representatives, as well as central, regional and local government and science and research organisations.

Christchurch artists BOOK IN appointment NOW for your Christmas provide visual feast ExtEndEd HouRS BEFoRE CHRiStmaS

A SHARED interest in texture and vibrant colour is the common thread in the work of three Christchurch artists whose work will be on display at Selwyn Gallery from tomorrow. The artists – Eva Peek, Judith Clemett and Marie Roxburgh – all studied on The Learning Connexion extramural art courses. Peek’s work is inspired by her love of curves, colour, pattern and the potent presence of the female figure. The title of her exhibition is ‘We are all one’, which refers to the symbol of the rainbow representing life, being at once many-coloured and united in one form. Her images are beautifully bright, made of layers of coloured and patterned paper collage on a painted background. Peek is currently a student at The Learning Connexion and has participated in several group shows both here in New Zealand and abroad. Clemett enjoys experimenting with a wide range of media and techniques to produce pieces in both two and three dimensions. Her abstract work is an exploration of acrylic pouring and layering techniques and a celebration of colour. Her figurative pieces focus on turning points in life and about pushing out of one’s comfort zone. She has had success in the Wearable Arts, too, with garments exhibited in Wellington, Nelson and Hong Kong. Clemett completed the Learning Connexion Diploma course in early 2012 and found it to be a liberating experience. Marie Roxburgh is particularly influenced by the beauty and history around the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula. In her latest landscapes she puts together images to create a memory of a location. She is also drawn to portraiture, aiming to capture and hold a fleeting moment. Roxburgh has also created pieces for the Wearable Arts, building the garment much like a sculpture using ordinary materials from local hardware shops. Her work is in private global collections and she has exhibited in New Zealand and won several awards. The exhibition will run for two weeks at the gallery, which will be open daily, apart from Monday, from 10am to 4pm. An exhibition programme will be available on the gallery’s website www.selwyngallery.co.nz or from the gallery.

Community groups / residents’ groups

West Melton winery New den planned for wins again Tai Tapu Scouts Out and about: A Tai Tapu Scouts group, off on another adventure.

TAI Tapu Scouting Group comprises Scout, Cub and Kea groups and all groups are well organised and well attended. All groups include both girls and boys and they do a range of activities, which are age-specific. They are led by warranted leaders and these are mostly parents of children attending the group. They all meet weekly and often partake in activities away from the den. The Scouts are camping this weekend, under canvas but close enough to go to the local school disco, Cubs are biking next week around the local area and Keas have just had a hike in the evening. The many other activities they do range from cooking, craft, sports, games and camp fires to community events and outings to places like the Antarctic Centre and the maze.

The local community fair was held at the Scout den for the first time this year, which proved to be very successful. All the scouting groups had stalls and activities at the fair. The grassy area in front of the den was ideal for all stalls and displays and the surrounding trees provided great shade during the day. As the den was built in approximately 1969, we are now in the process of renovating and updating it. Once completed this will be a great asset to the wider local community as a venue for hire. This is being achieved through funding and grants, fundraising and lots of volunteered time. It is a large job but with the great community spirit that we have, we are hoping to achieve this within the next couple of years.

WEST Melton winery and restaurant Melton Estate has been awarded the South Island 2013 Best Wine Tourism Restaurant as part of the international Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism Awards. This follows on from winning the same award in 2012. The annual awards honour wine tourism businesses in a competition run by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network. Christchurch City Council was the primary sponsor of the awards, with support from Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said the opportunity to promote Christchurch and the tourism and wine industries of the wider South Island regularly to an international audience was a key part of belonging to the network. “We see huge value for our city and the wider South Island in using the awards to promote

Mon–Fri 9am to 4.30pm Sat & Sun 10am to 4pm

DESPITE the most appalling weather, the Selwyn Lions’ recent ‘Pop-upCafé’ fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation was a wonderful success. The Lions have only admiration for those hardy souls who braved the elements and supported the cause. At times the wee cafe in the garage had people waiting for tables but no-one complained. The atmosphere was friendly and warm; the chatter was catching, with strangers exchanging laughter. Because of the wonderful response from sponsors, every cent collected will be handed to the Breast Cancer Foundation. One Lion member had even scoured stalls at a swap meet for extra teapots and cream jugs, others brought out the bone china cups and plates, china teapots (some of which had never been used) were brought into action and beautiful embroidered afternoon tea cloths were pressed into use for the first time in years. Thanks to a magnificent range of cakes and muffins, a choice of teas and ‘real’ coffee, a cheque for over $800 is to be presented to the Breast Cancer Foundation. The Lions have almost certainly set a precedent for 2013.

our region to wine tourists, who spend a lot more and stay significantly longer than your average tourist,” Mayor Parker said. Chief judge Dr Joanna Fountain, a senior lecturer in tourism at Lincoln University, said she was “very impressed” by the growing range of wine tourism opportunities available overall. Melton Estate won the Wine Tourism Restaurant category, having introduced a new chef, a seasonal and mostly local menu and a new pavilion and courtyard area. These initiatives signified a desire to maximise the visitor experience of both their facilities and wine-related offering. Melton Estate’s Tracy Caunter said the venue was focused on offering the best wine hospitality for locals and guests to Christchurch.

Marquet faces sterner test at Ruapuna NELSON speedway racer Nick Marquet will face a strong challenge this Saturday night when the Mag and Turbo Ruapuna Speedway hosts the first round of this summer’s Barry Butterworth Memorial Trophy Midget Car Series. Marquet has won the last three stagings of the series, joining his father Lee as a multi-time winner of the trophy that has been contested since 1994 in the memory of New Zealand Speedway great Barry Butterworth. With the New Zealand midget car championship being contested later this summer at Ruapuna there is an edge to the local competition, and former New Zealand TQ midget champion Glen Durie drew first blood when he recorded the feature race win at Ruapuna’s opening meeting in a Gaerte engine car that he recently purchased. Marquet also uses a Gaerte power plant and will be keen to continue his domination of the series, but firstly he will have to see off the challenges of the two most dominant racers on the South Island stage in recent years - fellow Nelsonian Nevil Basalaj and local boy David Kerr.

FRIDAY EVENING DECEMBER 7th Front runner: Five-time South Island Midget Car champion David Kerr gets the power down at Ruapuna last season in his Esslinger-engined car.

Main street is closed from 6pm with parade starting at 6:30pm. Lots of craft stalls and hot food, coffee and ice creams available.

Both of them were missing at the season opener, but Kerr shook down his Esslinger at Ellesmere recently, and was well satisfied with the modifications he and his team had made during the winter. Another potential front runner, who may yet have his car completed in time, is former circuit racing stand-out Nick Donaldson. His campaign last year was based out of Auckland, but the forthcoming nationals event has seen him return to his home track. Like Basalaj and Kerr, Donaldson relies on the American-made Esslinger engines.

Tom Doudney THE Lincoln High School girls’ rugby sevens team will represent Canterbury in the Condor 7’s Nationals to be held in Auckland this weekend. The girls recently beat Burnside High School to qualify for the nationals and followed that up with a 30-0 thumping of Papanui High School in their last match, played on Friday night. The team was formed this term in response to a push from the Canterbury Rugby Football Union to get girls sevens up and running in the

Weedons regain silverware WEEDONS’ time without the Steve Ryan cup was just three weeks after a resounding victory over holders Lincoln on Saturday. The game was shifted to the back field due to a local cultural event on the main oval. Lincoln batted first and Weedons openers Fraser Austin and Sam Fleming bowled tightly with Lincoln getting to 22-0 off their first 10 overs. Dan Fleming got opener Arthur Patterson for 13 with a great catch from club stalwart Bruce Agnew at second slip and that brought Dalton Lange in to join Richard Clark. The two put on more than 100 with a great partnership and Lincoln were poised for a total well over 200 at 146-1 with 15 overs remaining. However, Weedons Skipper Stu McGregor brought back Fleming, who struck straight away taking the prized wicket of Clark for 63. In another masterstroke McGregor gave the ball to Paul Rugg to throw down a few offies. It paid dividends straight away as he took the wicket of Lange for 48. Weedons had two quick wickets in succession and the momentum was all theirs. The wickets tumbled, with Fleming and Rugg both picking up their first five wicket bags for the club. Lincoln lost nine wickets for 22 runs and were bowled out for 168. In reply, Josh and James Watson got Weedons off to a solid start, then English import Ben Moseley with James Watson went through to 88-1 before Watson fell for 38. Rugg joined

region. This year is the first year girls’ teams have taken part in the national tournament. Lincoln High School head of sport Richard James said the girls were loving the opportunity to play sevens. “It’s been a challenge and they’re leaning plenty of things as they go. [Last week] they had the privilege of playing the Brazil national women’s team, who are touring here at the moment. They got soundly beaten but it was a good lesson to play a full international team.”

I DON’T want to dwell on Christchurch’s shaky past but I am reminded of the daily grind we live in when iconic events such as the ‘Round the Bays’ race is held, well in the bay-less (but pothole-less) North Canterbury. I will, however, dwell on the fact that a local events company (Not Just Events) has continued to run this prestigious event, taking place this Saturday, reinforcing that Christchurch is still a destination of choice. Of course Sunday’s festival event is, in fact, still in Christchurch, now at the University of Canterbury. Here is a perfect opportunity to not only support local events but also to set a goal to work towards providing mental and physical

benefits and maybe even a little healthy rivalry between friends. Of course if you’re not entered and trained by now you’ll need to start looking at the next cycling event (such as Le Race). If not competing, then spectating, particularly at the crowd-friendly criterium on Sunday, is the next best option. Some of New Zealand’s best female and male cyclists will be competing on both days, making spectating even more attractive. The university’s grounds in particular offer great viewing of almost the entire tight and fast circuit. Adding to the excitement, although unfortunate, crashes are part and parcel of such a dangerous circuit. I can reassure you though; I’ll be doing my best to stay upright this year.

The rural settlement of Darfield is a popular destination between Christchurch and the West Coast. It is a gateway to the scenic Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers and the Southern Alps.

Darfield is a friendly community with some delightful shops, for some gorgeous giftware, and eating places in a relaxed atmosphere, along with selected tours to the regions highlighted attractions. If you love the outdoors then Darfield has a lot to offer, whether it is hot air ballooning, horse riding, hiring ski’s or snowboarding gear and heading for the slopes, or enjoying the forests and walking tracks. culture, a must see is the Selwyn Art Gallery, historic jail and the farmers market, held every Saturday. Located 35 Kilometres west from the outskirts of Christchurch, Darfield is the main town between Christchurch and the West Coast. It is known as “The township under the Nor’west arch”, in reference to a characteristic weather phenomenon, which often creates an arch of cloud in an otherwise clear sky to the west of the township.

The best award-winning meat for Christmas

E

llesmere Butchery, on the main road of Leeston, has every reason to gloat; they are an award-winning butchery for its bacon and ham. For the last three years, owners Chris and Sue Brown have won eight awards for their bacon and ham, including Bacon of the Year 2012 and more recently as a gold medallist for their Sugar Cured Ham on the Bone. The awards prove the quality of Ellesmere meats have consistently been a class above the rest. Their award-winning results mean they are constantly raising the bar as bacon and ham manufacturers. Why go anywhere else for your ham and bacon? Don’t miss out, pre-order now for Christmas. Why pay up to $20 a kilogram for traditional hams somewhere else when you can get the best in New Zealand for only $15.50 a kilogram? At Ellesmere Butchery, they also stock free range chickens and turkeys – perfect for a Christmas feast! The butchery is always progressing forward and recently set up an online service, selling traditional meat cuts to the whole of New Zealand – a perfect opportunity to order online and be prepared for Christmas without even leaving your house! “It is a natural extension of the developments already introduced at the butchery,” says Chris. Online orders will be freighted anywhere in New Zealand, with no minimum order. “The more you buy the cheaper it gets, because there’s a set freight cost which we have to pass on.” Orders up to 20 kilograms will be freighted through New Zealand Couriers, packed in polybins and ice. Customers can go online to the website,

create an account by providing an email address, name and a delivery address and activate the online payment gateway for the purchase to be made and supplied. “I can give the whole country access through a nice and easy streamlined system, and there is a full replacement guarantee on products, along with exclusive online specials and competitions.” With the addition, too, of a free local delivery service five days a week – starting with Lincoln - means Ellesmere Butchery has expanded their staff to 10, including alongside Chris, a butcher and apprentice, three shop staff and part-time staff. Online shoppers should order through ellesmerebutchery.com, or ellesmerebutchery.co.nz. Phone Chris, or Sue at (03) 324 3419.

An even better place to shop

T

he expansion plans of The Hub Hornby shopping Centre will make it the fourth largest shopping Centre in Christchurch. This expansion will see Farmers increase in size from 1200sqm to 6000sqm across two levels, with the upper level accessible directly from an expanded upper deck car park. A brand new food court will also be built in the heart of the mall to accommodate a wide range of ready to eat food retailers, in a very contemporary environment. A new internal retail precinct will also be built following the line of Chalmers Street and joining the new Farmers with

the existing northern entrance. This entrance will be heavily upgraded and enlarged to improve access and allow for more outdoor seating. To make space for this expansion the eastern end of Chalmers Street will be moved north by approximately a road width. “This will have the added benefit of smoothing out the kink halfway down Chalmers St which will improve visibility and pedestrian safety” says Centre Manager Jason Marsden. “This expansion has been in the pipeline for some time now and the timing is perfect for the western side of Christchurch

The jewel of Hornby

A

centrepiece of the Hornby community since 1956 with well over 6000 members, the Hornby Working Men’s Club is one of the largest in New Zealand and offers reasonably priced food and beverages and a wide range of social and sporting activities. With so many members on board there is always something happening in the club that will appeal to you. From getting together for a drink after work, or challenging your mates to a game of pool – the Hornby Working Men’s Club has it all. Being membership-based and open to people from all walks of life, the Club is accessible at $44 for the first year of membership (dropping to $34 after that). Members catch all the sport and racing action in the Club Bar with six huge screens streaming horse racing, SKY Sport and TV programmes. The bar has been refitted with new drinks’ cabinets, fridges, beer taps and glassware, and its layout has been revised to improve the position of the service

points. This translates to more efficient service during busy times - indicating how service-oriented the club is to its patrons. The Club Café and Chalmers Restaurant was also extensively renovated with the kitchen having a full refit. Members also enjoy modern gaming facilities and the state of the art Hornby TAB outlet. The Club plays host to live music every Friday and Saturday night in the Westview Lounge. Complementing this regular lineup are the many Showcase Events that the Club plays host to. If you are a member and looking to hold an affordable function of your own, the Club is vastly experienced in gala luncheons and dinners, wedding receptions, 21st birthdays, corporate events and conferences. The upstairs Sports Hall is capable of accommodating up to 400 people (table seating) or 600 when configured theatre style. Other options include the Alpine Function Room (80 people) and Meeting Room (20 people) for dinners, meetings and

conferences. For those into fitness, the club offers its members access to an affordable gymnasium (at $150 per annum) including new changing rooms and showers. And for those not so into their fitness, the club operates three shuttle vans within a 5km radius to ferry its members safely from their homes to the club, and back again, for $2 a trip. So join now and experience the unique benefits that only club membership brings. For more information see www. hornbyworkingmensclub.co.nz or ring (03) 349 9026.

Corn is ready to harvest when it sits at a 45-degree angle.

weet corn (Zea mays), or just good oldfashioned corn as I call it, is one of those quintessential summer vegetables that makes my mouth water just thinking about the taste of it. Corn is an easy crop to grow. Being a tall, upright plant, it’s economical on space and can be used as a support system for other crops and plants, such as beans, peas and sweet peas. Choose a position in full sun away from strong winds. Corn enjoys a fertile soil with good drainage. Add sheep pellets, vegetable mix or blood and bone prior to sowing and planting. Make sure these are mixed well into the soil and water well prior to planting. Plant about 30cm apart and in rows 50cm to 70cm apart. It’s best for corn to be grown in groups, rather than in single rows, to ensure effective pollination Corn can be grown in deep containers with plenty of root room. Old recycling bins or plastic tubs are ideal, as they are deep and large enough to fit approximately four to six plants. Being portable, they can be moved around the garden as required to catch the sun. Once established, corn will cope with dry periods but this isn’t ideal as it affects the final crop. Aim to keep soil moist – water deeply once a week, maybe twice in freedraining soils.

Which ones to grow While garden centres have plentiful stocks of a couple of the most popular varieties in spring and early summer, seeds of other varieties are widely available. Some catalogues list heirloom and popping corn varieties, which are well worth a try. Corn seeds can be saved from ripe corn; dry and store somewhere cool and dry until the following spring. ‘Chieftain’ – creamy yellow cobs, renowned

Harvesting

Mother Nature is a clever lady and often gives us hints and tips on how to know when crops are ready. With corn, you can tell it’s ripe by feeling the end of a cob. If it’s rounded or blunt, rather than pointed, the ears are ready. When the corn “silk” dries up and turns dark brown it’s an indication of harvest time. When the cobs begin to angle themselves further away from the main

Every droplet strategically placed.

If the kids are after some extra pocket money, grow a big patch of corn. Plant out in spring and, all going well, later in summer the crop will be ready for sale. Put a sign at the gate or local farmers’ market. With happy kids reaping the rewards, fresh cobs sell for a $1 or $2 a cob early in the season. Each plant produces between three and six cobs – let them do the math.

for its ability to produce an evenly filled husk. Generally only available as a seed line. ‘Florida staysweet’ – good, yellow, maincrop variety with good yields of large cobs. ‘Gold’n’pearl’ – produces large crops of twotoned dark yellow and cream kernels. ‘Honey and pearl’ – white and yellow kernels; an old favourite. ‘Sugarsweet’ – early season variety; heavy cropping, yellow cobs.

stem at about a 45-degree angle, it is also a sign that the cobs are mature. If you don’t trust your judgement, you can pull back a bit of the husk and check to see if the cob looks as though it’s ready. This isn’t ideal. Corn cobs don’t all mature at the same time. You are best to leave the corn on the plant to ripen fully before you harvest. Sometimes you will find that your corn cob may not have a lot of actual corn on each cob. This is often caused by a lack or water and or poor pollination during the development phase.
