CANTERBURY Television’s (CTV) new partnership with Germany’s international broadcaster Deutshe Welle kicks off on its World Stories programme tomorrow. This will beam CTV’s first news item on the Central City Blueprint into more than 300million homes around the world. This platform gives CTV an opportunity to inform the world of the Christchurch rebuild, New Zealand as a tourist destination, our farming exporters, high tech innovators and our outstanding people. Cantabrians will be able to

view World Stories on CTV Sunday October 21 at 9pm and repeated on Wednesday October 24 at 8pm. More interesting stories from New Zealand will be told each fortnight. CTV chairman Nick Smith said they were looking forward to showing Canterbury’s stories and innovations to the rest of the world. “The opportunities World Stories presents as CTV showcases New Zealand’s export and tourism industries and highlights the progress with the Christchurch rebuild could have huge spin-off effects,” he said.

Airport reports $19.6m profit

CHRISTCHURCH International Airport Limited (CIAL) has reported a net profit after tax of $19.6 million for the year ended June 30. This company has attributed the result to “very satisfactory returns from the company’s commercial operations”. The reported profit also includes a net aftertax gain on the revaluation of the company’s investment property portfolio of $4.1 million. Excluding the impact of this revaluation gain, CIAL’s operating profit after tax of $15.5 million was 30 per cent ahead of budgeted expectations. CIAL has declared a final dividend for the year of 7.65 cents per share, bringing the total dividend for the year to 15.15 cents or $8.73 million. Addressing the company’s AGM on Monday, CIAL chief executive Jim Boult said the events of the past two years had inevitably taken a toll on passenger numbers. Compared to the year

ended June 30, 2010, the last full financial year before earthquakes, CIAL has lost 448,814 passengers. The loss of 7.5 per cent of CIAL’s passenger base since the 2010 financial year has cost the company revenue from a number of sources associated with passenger throughput, in particular terminal concessions and car parking. The company’s operational costs are higher as a result of the earthquakes, including thorough testing of every building on campus. In all, earthquake-related issues have cost the company approximately $15 million at the EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) level in the 2012 financial year. Mr Boult told shareholders the current year was always going to see a drop in profitability for the company, because of costs involved in financing the new terminal construction. Prior to the 2012 financial year, the cost of funds

had been capitalised against the project. The Integrated Terminal Project accounted for $28.2 million of the company’s total capital expenditure of $63 million. The development is due to be completed March 2013 and to come in within one to two per cent of the budget set in 2008.

Protest over Cranmer Courts demolition Building protest: As demolition trucks moved in on the Cranmer Courts building last Thursday, so did the protesters. The demolition started after attempts to sell and save the building fell through. Demolition first started in June but stopped and didn’t continue after an Australian offered to buy the site and restore the façade. Last Friday that offer was withdrawn. A Canterbury Earthquake Recovery spokesperson said the 136-year-old historic building was still subject to a dangerous building notice and after signing a demolition contract, work had to start. The building was badly damaged in the earthquakes but the owners of the units didn’t want to see it demolished. Demolition is due to be finished in about six weeks. Photo: Marcus Gibbs

CHRISTCHURCH children from schools affected by earthquake-related issues and the Ministry of Education’s recent shake-up got to leave their cares on the ground last week with free flights over the Canterbury Plains as part of a Salvation Army holiday programme. The light aircraft flights were put on by the Canterbury Aero Club from its West Melton Aerodrome over three days this week. The Salvation Army, which is working with 16 Christchurch schools to provide holiday programmes and other assistance, arranged and funded the flights out of its earthquake response fund. Salvation Army Earthquake Response Unit manager Bruce Coffey said the organisation wanted “to do something for the kids to bring some fun into their lives”. Emmanuel School pupil Jessie McKerrow, 9, pictured, said the best part was “flying right up into the air since everything was so tiny”. Around 245 children took part in either the flights or farm visits this week as part of the holiday programme.

DAFFODILS have become synonymous with springtime in Christchurch and those who appreciate the bright blooms have the Christchurch Beautifying Association to thank. The association is one of the city’s oldest residents’ groups, established in September 1897 with the aim of making the city one where beauty is respected and encouraged. Current secretary and treasurer Peter Berry said over the past 25 years the group has planted about 70,000 daffodil bulbs in North Hagley Park, working alongside the Christchurch City Council. In May this year a group of about 10 volunteers took part in an annual planting morning, sowing 3000 bulbs along the Avon river bank by the Armagh Street bridge, all paid for by the association. Mr Berry said the city is known for its spring daffodils. “With what Christchurch has been through, I think people have probably got a bigger thrill from it in the last few years.” The floral clock in Victoria Square, now in storage, the Peacock Fountain in the Botanic Gardens, Millbrook Reserve and the water-wheel on the Avon are also city landmarks which were gifted by the Association, which has about 130 members, usually older people who have an interest in gardening and beautifying. The association would always like to be doing more. “The reality is with all the demolition things happening there’s not a lot we can do but we certainly want to be involved with the new city particularly along the Avon River.” Mr Berry is also the chair of the association’s Christchurch streets and gardens committee which hands out Community Pride awards along with streets and gardens awards. “We visit every street in Christchurch for street awards and at the same time pick out gardens we think deserve recognition.” In doing so, they have played a big part in promoting the Garden City.

First Spring River Festival for Christchurch THE 2012 Spring River Festival is the first of what is to be an annual event held each Labour weekend on the lower Avon corridor, estuary and beaches. The programme, offering 40 recreational and community events, is taking place at event hubs in New Brighton, Ferrymead, Burwood, Kerrs Reach, Travis, Shirley and Avonside, showcasing the vitality and potential of the east as “Otakaro: place of the game”. There is something for everyone, whatever their age, ability or interest, with a diverse range of activities covering sport and recreation, culture and heritage, environment and gardens and entertainment and community. The weekend aims to recognise the importance of the Avon-Ōtakaro River and estuary to the history, health and wellbeing of Christchurch. Reconnecting people and communities from all parts of the city, this celebration of the human spirit will particularly support and strengthen many of the communities most affected by the quakes, festival project manager Evan Smith said. By promoting local businesses and business opportunities along the lower Avon corridor, the festival will restore confidence in the recovery of the east, Mr Smith said. Initiated, coordinated and promoted by Avon-Ōtakaro Network, the festival is supported by CCC, CERA, Sport Canterbury, CanCERN, Healthy Christchurch, Rebuild Christchurch Foundation and the Volunteer Army Foundation. The events are, however, autonomously run by a diverse range of local organisations, so this is a collaborative effort bringing together a broad combination of interests. Festival highlights Saturday, October 20: Community garden

Australia. Beautiful one day. Lethal the next ... With the best detectives in the business, cutting edge technology and offices around the globe, there is no investigation company quite like PRIVATE. Now, at a glittering launch party overlooking the iconic Opera House, PRIVATE SYDNEY throws open its doors . . . Craig Gisto and his newly formed team have barely raised their glasses, however, when a young Asian man, blood-soaked and bullet-ridden, staggers into the party, and what looks like a botched kidnapping turns out to be a whole lot more. Within days the agency’s caseload is full: from a missing businessman whose latest scheme was a step too far; to a rock star terrified he’s next in line for the infamous ‘Club 27’. But it is a horrific murder in the wealthy Eastern Suburbs and the desperate search for a motive that stretches the team to the limit. Stacy Friel, friend of the Deputy Commissioner of NSW Police, isn’t the killer’s first victim – and as the bodies mount up she’s clearly not the last . . .

THE first single released by Christchurch singer/ songwriter Shayna King, called Broken Hearts, will be included on her debut album, which she hopes will be out by the end of the year. The album will feature a mixture of styles including easy listening, rock, country and blues. She has been recording with a variety of artists including the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and some overseas artists. Having completed eight of the album’s 10 songs, King was enjoying the recording process. “I’ve grown a lot over the past year with my songwriting and performing, and just the experience of being in the studio and recording is really great.” King picked up her first guitar at age six and the new album features music written from as far back as when she was just 12 years old, as well as more recent material. Hoopers descend on Hagley THE New Zealand hula hooping record challenge took place on October 7 in Hagley Park as part of the IceFest festivities. Not only was the event an attempt to break the record for the most people hooping simultaneously, it was a fundraiser to help Christchurch girl Maddie Collins with her battle against kidney disease. For a full two minutes, entrants swung their hips, more or less in unison. More than the record number of 160 hoopers took part but sadly, the record was not broken with only 121 hoopers managing to keep going for the required time. However, more than $2000 was raised for Maddie and her family. Event organiser Bernadette Smith of In2Hula said they would have another shot at the record very soon. Running in conjunction with the record challenge was a schools competition, won by Ilam Primary which receives more than $600 worth of hula hoops and an interactive lesson on hoop tricks. Mainland Press social editor Gilbert Wealleans snapped hoopers making themselves dizzy in Hagley Park…

Italian Film Festival hits Christchurch LOVERS of Italian culture will enjoy a cinematic feast of films during the Italian Film Festival which opens next Wednesday at Hollywood Cinemas in Sumner. This year’s festival includes 20 films that span a wide range of genres from romantic comedy to drama and documentaries. Festival director Tony Lambert said this year’s lineup of films contained something that would appeal to everyone. “We have a mouth-watering group covering many genres, particularly concentrated on those that appeal to the majority of the New Zealand public: comedy, romantic comedy and drama. “There are also two documentaries that open windows on life in Italy today and an Oscar winner, Cinema Paradiso, from 1988.” Choosing which films to screen during the festival was no easy task for Mr Lambert, who watched over 55 films before selecting the final 20. “I found that completing the lineup this year was the most challenging; the hardest decisions were about what films to leave out of the lineup. “The breadth of films and genres offered each year is widening and this year’s selection is one

of the best offerings.” Mr Lambert said while he didn’t have a shortlist of must-see films for the festival, he had been surprised by the popularity of one of his outside choices. “This year one of the most popular films so far is Six Venice, while the genre that stands out is romantic comedy as Italians are the best at this.” Six Venice, directed by Carlo Mazzacurati, is a documentary which asks the question ‘What makes a city?’ The film looks for answers in the stories of six Venetian locals: a hotel cleaner, an archaeologist, a pensioner from Mestre, a painter/fisherman, a burglar and a young boy. The festival’s opening night features Welcome to the South by Luca Miniero. The comedy explores the north-south rivalry in Italy. Alberto (Claudio Bisio) is a postal worker who hopes to transfer to Milan, but is instead sent to Castellabate in the south. Tickets for the opening night on Wednesday, October 17, at 7pm for a 7.30pm screening are $20 and include a choice of Italian beverage. Seats are limited so booking is advised. For bookings, contact Hollywood Cinemas on 326 6102 or visit their website at www. hollywoodcinema.co.nz.

Growth for IT business post-earthquakes Big Break competition FOR Christchurch businesses, being able to access their data even when they can’t access their buildings has become increasingly important. It’s this need that has seen hosted infrastructure companies like vBridge, which started just a few months before the September 2010 earthquake, grow rapidly over the past two years. The company’s Hamish Roy said they removed the requirement for businesses to have information technology infrastructure, like servers, on site. “With so many businesses being in a disaster situation and not being able to operate from their normal place of business, suddenly they had to look at other options and cloud computing was obviously a key function that could get their business back up and running.” Mr Roy said companies that had back-ups but weren’t able to access their IT equipment brought their back-ups to vBridge to be restored. “It’s becoming more and more crucial that

NEW AND USED SPARE PARTS All Models

they have those systems up and running for them to be able to compete in the market.” The company said cloud computing services enabled users to access files and applications securely over the internet. VBridge’s John Ward said they took the servers which used to be on a business’ premises and put them in a data centre, which mitigated about 85 per cent of the risk of having servers on site. Mr Ward said businesses in high rise central city offices couldn’t access their systems not just because they couldn’t get there physically but because the power was cut. “Being in a data centre that mitigates all those risks as well as remotely backing up those systems to a secondary site really improves things for customers.” They said another advantage of hosted infrastructure was business owners could focus on growing their businesses instead of spending money and time maintaining their IT.

Pip Widdon

PIP Widdon, a student from the University of Canterbury, won the creativity and innovation award representing New Zealand in the $100,000 CPA Big Break Dragon’s Den-style tertiary business competition final in Melbourne last week. Miss Widdon presented her case to judges to allow the Make-A-Wish Foundation to become a sustainable not-for-profit organisation. The judges said she delivered a slick presentation that was well researched and addressed the key issues. She won the New Zealand event from 144 teams. University of Canterbury accounting lecturer and MBA director Tony Mortensen said Miss Widdon had put in a tremendous amount of work. “It was an amazing experience and great to be recognised. I’ve learnt a lot,” Miss Widdon said. She said the CPA Big Break project gave her a chance to solve real world business problems that might be facing not-for-profit organisations. The competition was organised by one of the world’s largest accounting bodies, CPA Australia. It was run for the first time in New Zealand this year and included many Australian entrants. The event challenges undergraduates to get a headstart in their careers.

Sisters shave heads for solidarity Sisterly support: Mel Taylor, left, is supporting her sister and best friend Kim Humphries as she battles a rare form of cancer.

Samantha Early

WHEN Addington-based hair salon owner Kim Humphries found out she would lose her long blonde hair to cancer, she decided to it would be on her own terms. The 31-year-old was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma in August, after she noticed a lump on her face and had it checked. Now Kim, of Ilam, who has been running her own business Kim’s Cuts salon in Lincoln Road, Addington for the past five years, is facing an intensive six to eight-week round of chemotherapy followed by many months of recovery. She goes into hospital for treatment on October 23. Her older sister, Mel Taylor, of Casebrook, said as soon as she heard her sister would lose her hair she decided to shave hers off too. “I would cut off my right arm if that was going to help.”

The idea snowballed from there and this Saturday at 2pm the sisters will be joined by their supporters at the Pedal Pusher Bar on Lincoln Rd for the Big Shave Off. Both women will shave their heads to show their sisterly bond and raise funds to help Kim and her family through her treatment, during which Kim will not be able to work. Her husband, Selwyn Humphries, has dropped his studies to care for her. “For the first particularly six to 12 months her immunity is going to be low, so there’s a risk when interacting with people,” Mel said. Among those also shaving their heads are Kim’s stepson Seth and one of her 12-yearold customers. Friends and clients have been looking at ways to help including offering donated items to auction off and the sisters were grateful for the support they had received so far, including the Pedal Pusher owners for donating the venue.

“In a way for me it’s a great way for people who aren’t really close friends of mine to feel they can see me before I go for treatment and give their support just by being there,” Kim said. She was hoping to keep her salon business open, with one of her staff members, Daniel Winchester, taking on the role of manager in her absence. “We call him the Danager! He has been absolutely amazing, really stepped up from the day I found out.” Mel said her sister’s passion for hairdressing was evident from childhood, when Kim would steal her Barbie dolls. “They would go missing and they would end up with crew cuts!” The pair created a public Facebook page called The BIG Shave OFF, which contains details of Saturday’s event and ways people can donate and help out. Kim is determined to fight the cancer. “I’ll be back.”

Great day: Opawa schoolgirl Niva Chittock, 11, at the RNZAF base at Ohakea.

Niva takes flight OPAWA School student Niva Chittock will have a school holiday story that’s hard to top. Niva, 11, spent a day with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) after placing second in the New Zealand Defence Force’s Operation ANZAC Spirit poster competition earlier this year. As part of her prize she was hosted at the Ohakea Air Force base last Thursday. She flew in an Iroquois, tried out the A109 helicopter simulator and was shown around the base. Niva said she had a great time. “It was awesome. My favourite thing was when we went flying on the Iroquois helicopter. I loved flying the A109 simulator and everyone was really nice,” she said. Operation Anzac Spirit is a poster competition run by the New Zealand Defence Force to encourage students to learn about Anzac Day and how it is commemorated. Niva’s poster was created in pencil and watercolours showing the ANZAC Memorial Bridge of Remembrance in Christchurch. Almost 250 entries were received during the competition, which asked year 7 and 8 students to design and create a poster showing Anzac Day in their communities.

New bridge for Carrs Rd Samantha Early

A BASIC design for a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the new Southern Motorway at Carrs Rd, Halswell has been chosen by the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board after lively debate. The board has endorsed the most basic of the three bridge options, which was the one recommended by Christchurch City Council staff. The final decision will be confirmed by the full council at its meeting today. Community board chairman Mike Mora said the resolution was hotly contested and passed four votes to three, with Sam Johnson, Peter Laloli, Councillor Helen Broughton and Judy Kirk voting for it and Councillor Jimmy Chen, board deputy chair Judy Kirk and himself preferring the first and most expensive option of a ‘landmark’ suspension bridge. There was also a second option of a feature bridge, with a design based on a Maori fishing net. All three options cost more than the $2.8 million the council had originally budgeted for in its long-term plan. The landmark suspension bridge would have cost $1,189,621 over budget,

the feature bridge $1,464,523 over and the basic bridge $539,523 over. Mr Mora said the landmark bridge, with a design based on a white sculptural hook resembling a Maori trolling lure, would have been a positive statement for the area through which many people would enter Christchurch on the new southern motorway. “It would have been in line with the theme of the other bridge [the gateway bridge planned for] Memorial Avenue,” he said. Community board member Natalie Bryden, who voted for the basic design, said the reason for her decision was financial. “With the way Christchurch is in the last couple of years I don’t believe the city council has got that money to spend on a bridge when we have still got people living in unacceptable conditions. That is why I went for the cheaper option,” she said. Fellow board member Peter Laloli also voted for the cheaper option. “The three options they had were well over the budget that was provided. We were showing restraint for what we are using ratepayers’ money on.”

The areas on either side of the bridge are marked for new housing, with the Fulton Hogan development off Halswell Road on one side and Wigram Skies on the other and the bridge would also link in with a network of cycle ways in the area. Mr Mora said the link was an important one. “Communities can be easily divided by a motorway and we wanted to make the opportunity for people to safely traverse the motorway, to tie those communities together.” However, he still supported a landmark bridge at some point on the motorway as people entered Christchurch. “It all depends how far out of town it is because it could well be in Selwyn.” The final design work will start once the plan has been signed off by the council. Construction is due to start in June 2013.

Located near the Hagley Park end, Trevinos is ideally located for your next breakfast meeting, dinner out or function. Their large function room caters for conferences, seminars or meetings and can be fully catered for, from product launches to a 21st birthday or 50th wedding anniversary. An Asian twist to Mediterranean dishes is the perfect way to describe the extensive menu. The beauty about Trevinos is that you can dine with a large group and everyone will find a delicious option to suit their tastes. New to the menu is the five spiced duck leg confit, with a bed of Asian greens,

Lighter Cladding and You Building and Housing* deals with building legislation and controls. It provides information and advice about building regulations. It has published guidance on repairing and rebuilding houses damaged by the Canterbury earthquakes. If you live in the residential green zone the guidance suggests that you consider using lighter cladding and construction methods.

What are foundation technical categories?

What is meant by lighter construction and cladding?

The flat area of the residential green zone is divided into three foundation technical categories (TC1, TC2, TC3). They are a guide to the level of site investigation required and the most appropriate foundations for your home. Houses with appropriate foundations will perform better in future earthquakes.

Suspended timber floors are lighter than concrete slabs. Common types of lighter roofing are sheet and metal tile roofs. Common types of lighter cladding include:

Why recommend lighter construction in TC areas? Lighter materials reduce the weight of your home and the load placed on your on foundations. In most cases houses with lighter cladding and roofing performed better in the Canterbury earthquakes. Lighter homes are likely to be more resilient in future earthquakes and less costly to repair.

• Weatherboards, made of timber, fibre cement, PVC or aluminium • Profiled metal – pre-finished with colour or left natural • Sheet material – including ply and fibre cement • Systems which combine insulation with a pre-panted finish.

Do lighter claddings result in leaky homes? A house that is well designed and built to Building Code requirements, in a style that is appropriate to the local weather conditions, should remain weather-proof whether it is clad in lighter materials or heavy materials.

Do lighter claddings look good?

Can I use heavy cladding if I want to?

Lighter claddings can look very good and the range includes claddings that are low maintenance (like pre-finished profiled metal) or timber such as cedar and macrocarpa.

It is still possible to rebuild using heavier claddings (such as brick and tile) providing your foundations are designed appropriately for the ground conditions and can support the weight of the house.

Architect designed homes finished with lighter cladding Building and Housing ran a competition to encourage architects and designers to develop innovative and affordable home designs that could meet changing family needs. There were 140 entries to the competition. Illustrated below are three house designs, which use lighter cladding, by architects who were winners or highly commended in the competition.

Tony Koia of Koia Architects Limited was a category winner in the Starter Home design competition. He enjoys creating thermal-efficient and well-designed homes. His winning entry is shown here.

Stephen Smith of S3 Architects Ltd was the supreme winner of the Starter Home design competition. One of his more recent designs is shown here; it is clad in vertical weatherboards of western red cedar finished in wood oil. Pine board and batten would be another option.

Geoff Walker of Image Architecture is passionate about creating houses that have an environmental focus. His highly commended design is shown here.

related stress and dealing with any ongoing aftershocks. Clinical hypnotherapist Juliette Harris says our subconscious mind is like a large file storage facility which stores all our automatic responses such as breathing, blood circulation and tissue repair, as well as all our learned responses such as walking, holding a pencil, riding a bike or driving a car. Our subconscious mind also stores our less resourceful and sometimes problematic learned responses or behavioural habits, including overeating, smoking, fears and phobias, anxiety or sleep disorders. In order to modify some of these behaviours, we must first access the subconscious mind and then reprogram it with more desired patterns of behaviour. This is achieved using a progressive relaxation technique which relaxes your mind and your body, allowing us to bypass the critical faculty of the conscious mind and deal directly with the subconscious. Hypnotherapy is a safe and enjoyable process that can change lives in the most positive and exciting of ways. It can assist you with many problem areas, such as smoking, weight reduction, sleep problems, stress or anxiety, enuresis (bedwetting), nail biting, pain relief, fears and phobias, confidence, public speaking, sporting focus and so much more. Contrary to popular belief, the client is awake and in control of their responses during hypnosis; it can feel very similar to driving on ‘auto-pilot’, when you lose track of time and how you arrive at your destination, but knowing that you followed all the road rules subconsciously in the meantime. When under hypnosis you will feel very relaxed and comfortable, time passes quickly

and your subconscious mind becomes very receptive to new suggestions and ideas. Often, one session is sufficient to deal with issues which have arisen in the shorter term; however, between two and four sessions can be more beneficial to those with more longterm and deep-rooted problems. Perhaps those eating habits, where a whole With it’s rachel Vogan packet of biscuits is consumed instead of just a single biscuit, or a binge of snacking occurs most evenings after dinner. Many of us eat for emotional reasons, boredom, stress or habit, rather than actually being hungry. Perhaps it is your sleep patterns that have spiralled out of control, or got into a rut. ith summer on its way, Kiwis now have one more reason to shape up their eating habits with a fun, free online application launched by the Heart Foundation this month. The new Facebook application – called the Healthy Habit Exchange – has been launched in time to complement Annah Stretton’s Million for a Million campaign running throughout October. The campaign hopes to galvanise one million New Zealanders into losing one kilo each in a bid to raise awareness of the rising obesity epidemic. The foundation’s nutrition advisor, Delvina Gorton, says the campaign is a great way to get Kiwis thinking about healthier lifestyles. “Losing one kilo is achievable for most people, and while it won’t be life-changing, it may just kick-start small changes that, together, can have a big impact on general wellbeing and heart health,” says Delvina. “That’s where our new Facebook application comes in handy. to think about habits that lead them further away from their ideal health and putting a positive process in place to create a new, healthier habit. “Often, people get overwhelmed when they commit to eating healthy or losing weight. They don’t know where to start, or they have high expectations and then feel defeated when they’re not successful. “We’ve found that the simpler your goals, the easier they are to achieve. With this new application we’re hoping people will dip their toe in the water with just one exchange and not see the commitment to change as barrier, but something that’s surprisingly easy and painless,” she says. “We’ve listed some suggestions, like exchanging an empty stomach for a fulfilling breakfast, or upsized meals to downsized. People can also be creative and make up their own exchange and invite their friends to do the same. We’re excited to see the results.” The Facebook application is available from the Heart Foundation’s website www.heartfoundation.org.nz and at www.millionforamillion.co.nz.

The Ryder Cup is pure theatre WAY back in 1927, a seed merchant, Samuel Ryder from England, would never have dreamt that when he put up a 250-pound little gold cup for a team of golf professionals from England and Ireland to play against the United States, just where this idea could possibly have grown to by 2012. It wasn’t until 1979 that the competition was strengthened by European professionals joining the UK in the challenge. From 1985, the European team decided the domination by the USA had to come to an end and from that point it has become one of the most prized trophies in world sport. The event is now held every two years and it alternates between courses on both sides of the Atlantic. When you think the 24 golfers who lined up for last week’s battle were drawn from the top 35 golfers in the world, high drama was always on the cards. All those who competed probably never need to swing a golf club again in their lives because of the huge prize money in the respective tournaments they play in week in, week out. However, you could see on their faces just what an honour it was for the captains to have invited them to join their teams.

This year’s course was a really tough one but so it should be for this prestigious event. These guys needed to be tested, to find out who could hold their nerves or who would crumble under the white hot pressure. Another fascination that surrounds the Ryder Cup is that it is very much a team competition. A player’s year on the circuit, it is all about playing the rest of the field but in this event, points are earned for the team. Some players just don’t seem to be able to handle this format while others thrive on it. The 2012 Ryder Cup was riveting viewing not just for the huge global TV audience but the 50,000 fans who packed the course for the full three days. The Europeans were the holders of the Cup, having won it in 2010. After day two, they were very nearly dead and buried but come the last day’s singles the real heart and desire to retain it made this year’s event the best ever. Money wasn’t at stake but national pride was what both teams were playing out of their skins for. It was pure sporting theatre played out for the honour to be crowned the 2012 Champions, not the self-satisfaction the winning professional gets every other week of the year!

Drivers test their skills Samantha Early samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz

CANTABRIANS had the chance to put their driving skills to the test with a high-end car maker hosting a driving experience day at Ruapuna Raceway last month. For the past 15 years, Audi has been running driver experience events for its clients, but this year was the first time it has put on a true nationwide programme anyone could sign up for through its website. The day allows participants to put both themselves and the latest Audi models to the test. It’s proved popular in Canterbury, with more than 100 people taking part over three days in September. Audi driving team leader Tim Martin said it was a chance for the professional

driving instructors, many of them motorsport champions in their own right, to show their enthusiasm for driving and pass on important safety messages. “Our cars have such fantastic electronic safety systems but you need to know how to get the most out of these to really be a safe driver.” Through a series of challenges, including a stomach-turning braking test, they showed people how to use the technology in their cars. “We’ve got another really good one called the lane change, so you swerve to avoid an obstacle, you swerve back into your lane as quickly as you can and that tests the electronic stability programme in the car. “It’s designed to give people confidence that they in their own car can avoid an obstacle

Archibalds Audi Christchurch dealer principal Eric Swinbourne said 2012 had been a bumper year for sales, which he put down to the market in Christchurch being up in every level of the car industry. Mr Swinbourne said new models like the A1 were attracting buyers who had never bought European cars before. lights and that’s our big advantage; our big nationwide network – it’s a huge advantage.” The Brougham Street branch of the nationwide Braxton Car Lights network also specialises in repairs for light adjusters and light conversion of American car lights. With parts specialist Bryan Chang working almost full-time on light repairs, prices can be much reduced, sometimes half the price of a new one. That’s especially important, says Richard, with more late-model cars on the road - meaning new replacements are more expensive. With over 60 years’ combined experience, our staff are dedicated to saving customers money. Braxton Car Lights repair service includes plastic welding, drying out and resealing, resilvering and lens refurbishment. While Braxton Car Lights does only smaller repair work on vehicles, it works closely with garage workshops to provide the best parts and service. All Braxton’s parts or services can be arranged through local garages or workshops. Drop by Braxton Car Lights at 325 Brougham Street, between Buchan and Gasson streets, phone them on (03) 365 3600, or check the website www.begroup. co.nz.

hen it comes to finding replacement car lights for any type of vehicle, make or model, Braxton Car Lights at 325 Brougham Street is the number one source, with a huge onsite range, a wide-ranging national and international network and a computerised system to match any request to the right replacement. Richard Vernimmen, sales manager for Braxton Car Lights in Brougham St, says the division of the BE Group covers the South Island. It has, or can, quickly locate replacement lights, or performance lamps for any kind of vehicles. Imports come from Japan (a monthly container load of parts arrives for the BE Group), Australia and Europe, as well as locally sourced replacements. “The beauty about our system is that we have it over others, because if we don’t have it in this building, or through other wreckers nationally, we go to Japan, or Taiwan to our contacts there,” says Richard. The Braxton network is huge, from new replacements, to secondhand parts, which he says are always checked and ready to go. “We make sure our replacements are always warrantable,” he says. “Within the group we have over 100,000

International hub for city EXCLUSIVE Multifunctional and multicultural: Clockwise from top left: English for work coordinator Helen Wilkinson, workplace literacy coordinator Anne-Marie Hampton, business owner Abdul Hashim, CBA chief executive Taz Mukorombindo and language school director David Wilkinson discuss a proposal for an international precinct in the new Christchurch city centre. Photo: Tom Doudney Staff reporters news@mainlandpress.co.nz

CHRISTCHURCH’S international business community would get its own precinct in the new central city under a proposal put forward by the Canterbury Business Association (CBA). CBA chief executive Taz Mukorombindo said the precinct would be a public-private partnership bringing together ethnic restaurants and shops, vocational training, language schools and community services. “The government is very interested in this concept because of its ability to revitalise the city,” Mr Mukorombindo said. A CBA survey of international business owners found many were not landowners, were under-insured and suffered shortfalls from insurance payouts. Mr Mukorombindo said at least half of the 72 respondents were facing these issues.

One such owner was Abdul Hashim, who opened his Riccarton restaurant, Taste of Bengal, nine years ago, one year after arriving in New Zealand from Bangladesh. Mr Hashim said issues such as damage and the fact many people did not realise the restaurant was open had seen patronage drop by 60 per cent since the earthquakes and he didn’t see an end to waiting for things to be resolved. Moving to the central business district could revive Mr Hashim’s business, so he said he would support an international precinct that could offer him more access to customers. Central City Development Unit director Warwick Isaacs said diversity and ethnic businesses would be important components of the new CBD, but thought that would occur naturally, without needing to set aside a specific

area. However he was open to discussing the concept. Wilkinson’s Language School director David Wilkinson saw the precinct as a positive development and one the school would like to be part of. “We’d like to gain larger premises, premises with a great mixing of ethnic groups because that’s our bread and butter really.” Christchurch Community House manager Mike Asmussen said he supported the idea so far as it amalgamated community groups in one location. Community House formerly operated in an 1800-square-metre building on Hereford Street and this week signed a temporary lease for a 378-square-metre location on Tuam St. A number of its 52 organisations were

international in focus, but the umbrella organisation was not. Mr Asmussen said Christchurch Community House would consider operating in or close to an international precinct if the accommodation costs were attractive. International business owners are invited to participate in a survey about the proposed precinct online at http://fluidsurveys.com/ surveys/cba/cba-ethnic-business-ownersurvey/ and those wanting more information could contact the Canterbury Business Association. Street artists transform vacant site THROUGHOUT last Saturday and Sunday, bare walls surrounding an empty site in New Brighton were transformed by a group of eight talented graffiti artists. The 200 square metres of wall space in the area behind Couplands Bakery received the artistic spruce-up in preparation for the B-town Rocksteady concert, being held there on the Saturday of Labour weekend as part of the Avon-Otakaro Network’s Spring River Festival. Paul Zaanen of the Carnaby Collective, which is helping to host the festival, said volunteers had previously collected eight bags full of rubbish from the scruffy, longneglected site. “Then, over the weekend, the graffiti artists provided over 120 hours’ work without cost, asking only for material costs,” Mr Zaanen said.

The graffiti art was an attempt to create an engagement with local young people and work towards not only brightening and activating the space, but also to harness young artistic talent to move in positive directions in the area through a potential legal graffiti wall, he said. “It will ensure the area remains active, alive and constantly evolving with creative contributions from local youth and a range of talented graffiti and street artists. “Although many great attempts have been made to curb tagging around Christchurch there continues to be a massive impact on communities around the city, and New Brighton is certainly no exception. Many local businesses have suffered financial problems due to window scratching and staffing costs associated with cleaning up after others,” Mr Zaanen said.

One of the graffiti artists, Nick ‘Ikarus’ Tam, was a former tutor for Project Legit, a programme that took a similar approach to tagging. “I would say ultimately my goal with this area is to turn it into Christchurch’s first ongoing legal graffiti site for the youth who want a legitimate area to practise their skills in. I come from the same beginnings as a lot of these guys and without some of the opportunities I’ve been given, my life could be a very different thing from what it is now,” Mr Tam said. He said a different approach was needed to combat graffiti, as methods tried for the last 20 years had failed. “It’s time to let someone who understands the needs and attitudes of this particular sector of ‘at-risk’ youth step in and take a positive role.”

No Ordinary Flower Shop Indeed It has been said that the earth laughs in flowers. The joy brought about by these sweet and colorful blooms is very evident at the New Brighton Florist. Before entering this charming olde world boutique of blooms you are greeted by a riot of colour on the street, the joy of all things floral is heightened by the welcoming smiles and friendly chats and the whole visual smorgasbord of delights is rounded off by the sheer selection of plants, gifts, housewares and art. The New Brighton Florist is so much more than any ordinary flower shop, in the words of manager Sue Tobin it is “out of the ordinary – totally different from so many others.” The riot of colours, shapes, perfumes and forms that greets you on the street is a wide and varied selection of flowers purchased fresh from the markets three times a week. Guardians of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary honoured

The Palms hosts school holiday activities

Tanya Jenkins

TWO well-known South New Brighton residents, Dorothy and Les Batcheler, have been presented with a life membership by the AvonHeathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust (AHEIT) in appreciation of their years of dedication towards the enhancement of the estuary environs. Les and Dorothy are founding members of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust and Les is a founding trustee. A Devonshire tea event held on Saturday afternoon, August 25, at the (temporary) Mt Pleasant Community Centre, gave trust members the chance to express their respect and thanks by presenting Les and Dorothy with a framed life membership certificate

and flowers and telling plenty of amusing anecdotes. The couple have made many contributions to the wellbeing of the estuary including assisting with the Combined Estuary Association’s (CEA) successful challenge to the Christchurch City Council’s plan to continue discharging treated sewage wastewater in to the estuary. Les is the co-editor of the publication: In defence of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary, 2002, a collection of written evidence re: the Estuary Discharge Hearings, provided by members of the CEA and associates. They have also participated in the considerations and discussions that led to the city council’s decision to construct the ocean outfall pipeline. The pipeline commenced operating

officially on March 24, 2010. All those attending the presentation agreed that Les’ and Dorothy’s determination to improve the water quality of the estuary and therefore improve the fauna and flora had been a key factor in the current popularity of this wetland.

Holiday help: The Palms Shopping Centre has been organising activities for kids over the school holidays. Last week, Eventful Kids offered dress-ups, musical instruments and craft tables for kids to get

creative. This week, The Palms has run an Xbox rugby competition for older children. Today, winners will challenge Canterbury players Corey Flynn, Sean Maitland and Colin Slade in the virtual sport.

Getting to know you: Takahēs Bunchy, left, and Hamilton get acquainted. Soon, they will share an enclosure at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. Photo: Chelsea Shover

Chelsea Shover

JUST a day after arriving at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve from her home on Mana Island, off the coast of Wellington, Bunchy the South Island takahē seemed to be adjusting to her new home and new companion, Hamilton. Bunchy and Hamilton have been touching beaks through the fence that separates Bunchy from the publically visible enclosure. She will join Hamilton once the two are comfortable with each other, possibly this week. “No one’s been the aggressor,” native section keeper Graeme Rathgen said, explaining that both had been submissive and neither had been rushing the fence.

News

Takahē generally live in pairs. Both Bunchy, at 16 years, and Hamilton, over 20, are advanced in age and retired from breeding programmes. But Willowbank staff is hopeful that the birds could defy the odds. “Fingers crossed,” Mr Rathgen said, adding that both have fostered chicks. Bunchy and her former partner Orbell raised two chicks. Bunchy was separated from Orbell when she contracted a leg and kidney infection that kept her from becoming a takahē ambassador at Zealandia. Hamilton’s partner Guy died of old age this year. South Island takahē are critically endangered and on the brink of extinction.

North Island takahē are extinct. Both were thought to be extinct until 1948 when Dr Geoffrey Orbell located a small group of the flightless birds in Fiordland’s Murchison Ranges near Te Anau. Lest anyone be confused about her carton’s contents, Bunchy arrived from Mana Island in a Mitre 10 flight box with a picture of a takahē on it. She joins the reserve as part of the Mitre10 Takahe Rescue, a partnership between the hardware chain and the Department of Conservation.

Sisters shave heads for solidarity Samantha Early

WHEN hair salon owner Kim Humphries found out she would lose her long blonde hair to cancer, she decided to it would be on her own terms. The 31-year-old was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma in August, after she noticed a lump on her face and had it checked. Now Kim, of Ilam, who has been running her own business, Kim’s Cuts salon, in Lincoln Road, Addington for the past five years, is facing an intensive six to eight-week round of chemotherapy followed by many months of recovery. She goes into hospital for treatment on October 23. Her older sister, Mel Taylor, of Casebrook, said as soon as she heard her sister would lose her hair she decided to shave hers off too. “I would cut off my right arm if that was going to help.” The idea snowballed from there and this Saturday at 2pm the sisters will be joined by their supporters at the Pedal Pusher Bar on Lincoln Rd for the Big Shave Off. Among those also shaving their heads are Kim’s stepson Seth and one of her 12-year-old customers. Friends and clients have been looking at ways to help including offering donated items to auction off and the sisters were grateful for the support they had received so far, including the Pedal Pusher owners for donating the venue. “In a way for me it’s a great way for people who aren’t really close friends of mine to feel they can see me before I go for treatment and give their

support just by being there,” Kim said.

Orana Wildlife Park’s CEO wins zoo award Chelsea Shover

FOLLOWING the February 22 earthquake, Orana Wildlife Park instantly lost most domestic and international visitors, along with 45 per cent of visitor income. “We had to very, very much go into survival mode,” Orana chief executive Lynn Anderson said. She was recently honoured with the Zoo Aquarium Association Australasia’s (ZAA) Professional Excellence Award. The award recognises long-term outstanding contribution to the zoo and aquarium industry, and Ms Anderson was singled out for her work in raising industry standards, merging two organisations and of course “guiding Orana Wildlife through everything Mother Nature has thrown at us”. Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand’s only

open-range zoo and spans 130 hectares in McLeans Island. In addition to its native New Zealand wildlife, the park is also home to a range of species from all over the world. Under Ms Anderson’s leadership, the Orana Wildlife Trust took over Southern Encounter Aquarium and Kiwi House, formerly in Cathedral Square and since closed, and Natureland Zoo in Nelson. After rescuing Natureland from the brink of closure, the trust is returning it to Nelson City Council. “Lynn is a very worthy winner of this highcalibre award, being a well-respected member of our industry,” executive director of ZAA Martin Phillips said. “The award is only conferred when a nomination warrants recognition.”

Mental health market coming to Riccarton Chelsea Shover

A DIFFERENT type of market will take its place next to the Riccarton House and Bush artisans’ market this Sunday. To cap off Mental Health Awareness week, a mental health market will feature buskers, sellers and information tables. The event is growing to be larger than what organisers originally expected. At least 10 stalls will sell T-shirts and other clothing, art, jewellery and books, with music and performances throughout the day. A bouncy castle and face painters will also be on hand. “We thought it would be one table with

balloons,” Beth Nobes, service delivery manager for Consumer and Advocacy Services (CAS) and Mental Health and Addictions Advocacy and Peer Support (MHAPS), said. There is no cost to have a stall, and wares need not obviously relate to mental health. Anyone who has had an experience with or interest in mental health is welcome to apply for a stall or tent. This is the first year CAS has put together a mental health market. In past years, CAS has organised odd sock days, walks for wellness and footpath chalk drawing events.

Washington-bound: UC law interns Seamus Woods, front left and Rachael Harris, with Dr Chris Gallavin.

UC law students to become Washington interns TWO University of Canterbury law students, Seamus Woods and Rachael Harris, will become law interns on Capitol Hill, Washington DC next month. The internship programme is jointly funded by the University of Canterbury (UC) and the Washington-based US-NZ Council. It involves a programme of events geared to expose the UC interns to the workings of the US political system and to benefit particular members and committees of the US Congress. The internship programme, designed to foster greater understanding of the American legislative system, was announced at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington DC on February 22, the one-year anniversary of the February 2011 earthquake. A number of council members were in Christchurch during the February earthquake and the University of Canterbury was selected to inaugurate the new internship programme as the council had been involved in collecting charitable donations for the rebuilding of Christchurch. To date, the council’s American Friends of Christchurch project has been the vehicle for more than US$5 million in donations and US$2.7 million in pledges to Christchurch. President of the United States-New Zealand Council William Maroni said the US and New Zealand could learn from each other by offering outstanding students the opportunity

to experience firsthand the American legislative process, they could promote greater understanding in both nations. UC’s acting dean and head of law Dr Chris Gallavin said law students from UC had played a pivotal role in the recovery of Christchurch with the likes of Sam Johnson and fellow law students establishing the student army. “The UC School of Law has a strong international reputation for quality and our students are of the highest calibre. They are just the type of people Canterbury will need to assist in the rebuilding of our beautiful city,” Dr Gallavin said. “The bonds of the Christchurch and US relationship have been strengthened immeasurably by the generosity of our US friends and it is a bond that will go from strength to strength in many different forms.” Dr Gallavin said the experience for Ms Woods and Mr Harris would be life changing. “To work in the US Congress immediately after a presidential election is simply lifechanging. I doubt that these students, undoubtedly amongst the top one per cent of law students in the country, will come back to New Zealand unchanged. The opportunity is so amazing I am actually jealous.” The interns head to Washington DC in midNovember and return in late January. They will present a paper on their experiences in late February 2013.
