Settlement extension a ‘god send’ Tom Doudney and Christine de Felice tom@mainlandpress.co.nz | christine@mainlandpress.co.nz

APRIL 30 is no longer deadline day for hundreds of Christchurch red zoners after their date for final settlement with the Government was extended by three months. Instead, they will now have until July 31, 2013 to leave their homes. The extension applies to all red zone property owners yet to settle with the Crown, who had been required to leave their houses by April 30. North New Brighton resident Malcolm Harris said the decision was a “god send” although he questioned why the call couldn’t have been made earlier. He and his wife Michelle had purchased land earlier in the year; however, the title, which was supposed to be ready in August, had been delayed and was unlikely to be ready until at least February. The build time had also been extended from 18 to 24 weeks and work could not begin until they had the title. With the April deadline looming, it was likely they would have had to find accommodation in a crowded market with many other red zoners in a similar situation. An earlier decision on the matter could have saved them stress. “It’s not like we’ve been holding the process up, we’ve done everything that we were supposed to do. We went and bought land and engaged the builder and so on and so forth, but

it’s beyond our control the delays that have happened.” The new timeline was a big relief. “We can now put the pressure back on the developer to get the title through and the builder to get the build done knowing that we’ve got until the end of July now to get out, which will hopefully give us enough time to get the place built without having to shift twice,” Mr Harris said. The decision was also welcomed by Richmond resident, Gay Averis. “For me, it will take the Pressure’s off: Richmond resident Gay Averis welcomes the extension pressure off. It will give me but has concerns about rising property prices. longer to find a place. I won’t feel that I need to rush in and the additional three months, the prices are take the first thing available. I have certainly going to go up. I’ve been looking for about felt that I needed to find something because so three months and I’ve put in three offers, but many people are looking.” I’ve missed out every time for various reasons. However, while she was pleased about the “Now with the extension I feel there’s not the extension, she was concerned about rising same urgency to get something before Christmas property prices. or early in the New Year. I can relax a bit, but “My only worry is that while it’s great I will still be concerned about prices. I’ve still having only got the same amount of money.”

As we get hotter and the pressure to buy up large increase so too do our tempers and demeanours. Christmas is meant to be a time for giving but that doesn’t necessarily mean expensive presents, exorbitant food feasts and all the liquid refreshments that go with it. There will be the usual tragic accidents and the mayhem we seem to encounter as we head into the long holiday. All the safety messages have been given, for driving, around water bodies and domestically around the home. It’s now up to us to be responsible and

accountable for ensuring how we plan and manage all the pressure and the fun times. There will be many in the community who will be glad to see the back of 2012, and seriously be hoping that 2013 brings some better fortune. Not everything happening is earthquakerelated but what is undeniable is the usual day to day dramas - births, deaths, marriages, accidents and illness - that still continue to add to the pressure that is everyday life. There will also be those who have had a great year and you should be celebrating in all earnest if you did. It’s easy to look back and try to critique what the year in review has meant to Christchurch but each of you knows how you have fared this year and what the stumbling blocks have been or what the ‘X Factor’ was that had you smiling. It is time to think of yourself and your family and friends over this holiday time (well, for some anyway). your batteries. Keep you and your whanau safe. As we head into 2013, it is clear that there is a lot more water to go under the bridge as the jostling for the rebuild of our city and communities continues. For now put it on the backburner, however hard or in your face it is. The politicians can afford to take a holiday so, so should you. Here’s a quote that’s worth thinking about from University of Canterbury Professor John Cookson: “The earthquakes have created an extraordinary situation where successful and expedited recovery depends on the genuine partnership of community, city council and central government. A solo effort by one of them will not serve. Nor will a partnership that is not founded on trust and openness.” It’s worth having a ponder over as you all slip, slop, slap and wrap yourself into the festive season. Merry Christmas to you all and Mainland Press wishes you all the best for 2013.

Dear Readers & Advertisers Thank you for all your loyalty and support during what has been another challenging year for Christchurch. Yet we can now look forward with optimism to 2013 and beyond as our city continues to grow supported by the backbone of our strong communities. Thousands attend Christmas Grotto

Time to get training MAINLAND Media and CTV are getting in to training for the Mitre 10 Mega – A Run to Remember being held on February 23, 2013. The 12 kilometre run and walk on the Port Hills was organised as an opportunity for people to reflect on what the Canterbury region has been through

with the recent earthquakes and raise money for the Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust. Complete Performance managing director and performance coach Richard Greer has put together a training programme for those wanting to enjoy the event.

Mr Greer said the most important things were making time to run regularly and making sure their running technique was correct to avoid injuries. To register go to www.aruntoremember.co.nz

A Run to Remember: Complete Performance Training Plan Let’s get started with a regular run. Your goal is to complete all the run sessions this week.

Christmas wonder: Finn, aged three, was among the thousands of people to take a look through the Christmas Grotto Experience at Spreydon Baptist Church. As of 4pm Monday, 15,530 people had been through the colourful series of displays, which have been open

since December 9. The Grotto is open each day between 9.30am and 9.30pm and it will open until 11pm on Christmas Eve. Admission is $3 per person, with children aged two and under free. Photo: Rebecca Bijl

CHRISTCHURCH Mayor Bob Parker is continuing to back light rail despite it not being part of the Central City Development Unit’s (CCDU) transport plan. Mayor Parker told Mainland Press that while it would have been preferable for light rail to be part of the plan; its exclusion did not rule it out as part of the city’s future transport strategy. “I think it is very much an option in future,” he said. “As the city continues to grow and we see, looking ahead, those growth figures related to traffic on the main access roads of the city, what we see is in 20 or 30 years’ time, large areas of gridlock around Christchurch. “Public transport is crucial to finding a cost effective way of resolving those problems.” Costs for light rail that some people had quoted were “way over the top” and he believed it would actually emerge as the most costeffective way of addressing traffic congestion and other issues. “In Auckland they proposed [light rail] back in the 60s and everybody listened to the arguments that said you can’t do it. Today we can look very clearly at Auckland and say ‘well if they had done it, it would have actually saved them a lot of the problems they’re experiencing now’.” University of Canterbury transport researcher Professor Simon Kingham believed light rail should have been considered as part of the CCDU transport plan. “Just about every city in the world that has a successful urban transport system has light

rail,” he said. “We are rebuilding our city and now is the time to do it. It is a unique opportunity.” However, Prof Kingham did not think it would be so easy for the city to develop light rail in future. “I suspect it is now or never.” When the central city transport plan was released in November, CCDU director Warwick Isaacs said the option for developing light rail in future had been allowed for.

Expanding on that, a Cera spokesperson Mayor Bob Parker told Mainland Press that “the Accessible City draft transport plan proposes the development of reliable public transport corridors on Manchester and Tuam Streets, with the intention of supporting bus travel. Should the city in the future wish to consider other cost-effective public transport options, these corridors would be capable of accommodating these.”

ELEVEN schools in Christchurch’s eastern suburbs will receive portable ICT equipment plus literacy and numeracy software to enhance pupils’ learning. The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust announced $410,000 worth of grants for the equipment for Aranui Primary, Central New Brighton, St James, Freeville, New Brighton Catholic, Parkview, South New Brighton, North New Brighton, Wainoni, Burwood and Avondale schools. The equipment will be available to the schools the first week of term one next year. Central New Brighton School principal Toni Burnside said she was happy the school would be receiving the equipment, which they could put towards preparing their seniors for high school as many did not have computers at home. “We are really excited to have the opportunity to get it for our children,” she said.

THE South Brighton Community Centre is to be demolished. The hall sustained damage from the September 2010 earthquake but the February 2011 earthquake caused significant further structural and superficial damage. Burwood-Pegasus councillor Glenn Livingstone said the facility was uneconomic to repair. “It was agreed to demolish it but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as it is in a bad state,” he said. The community centre is not operating so community activities have been held in the church and upstairs at the South Brighton Surf Club. Burwood-Pegasus Community Board chairperson Linda Stewart said the community centre needed to be rebuilt as the current facilities were not ideal.

“We do need atmosphere and community, there’s no doubt about that,” she said. The community centre was originally on the list of 30 facilities across the city and Banks Peninsula that the Christchurch City Council agreed should be prioritised for funding, further investigation and, where possible, repairs, but it was an administrative error as the council did not realise it was going to be demolished. The community centre was insured for just over $1 million. The hall sits over the South New Brighton School boundary so any future decisions must take the school into account. There is no time frame for when a decision about its rebuild will be made. A decision to demolish Sumner library has also been made.

Land values questioned Gracie Fea gracie.fea@ctv.co.nz

CENTRAL city property owners forced to give up their land to the Crown are being offered, in some cases, half the value of independent valuations in a process they’re scorning as inequitable and secretive. City Owners Rebuild Entity chairman Ernest Duval said the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) was presenting landowners with figures well below their own individual valuations and refusing to release valuation reports. The government is acquiring more than 800 properties within the four avenues to make way for 12 key anchor projects in the central city blueprint, released in July. Mr Duval knew of one property owner who engaged three international highly credible valuation firms, which did not consult each other, to value the same property. “They were all within cooee of each other, within $50 to $100 a square metre. The Cera figure was a little over half that figure. Obviously something’s not quite clicking.” The Crown contracts Colliers International and Telfer Young to carry out its valuations. The Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) said it was not unusual for valuations to vary, and a key purpose of negotiation was to discuss the differences and to try to reach

common ground. However, Mr Duval said the valuation methodology being adopted by the valuation firms should be the same. “It seems to be ‘here’s the number, do you like it or not like it’ but there doesn’t appear to be a mechanism beyond that to get some form of agreeable closure.” Where the Crown is unable to conclude a negotiated agreement with an owner it will consider compulsorily acquiring the land. The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act details the process for owners to lodge a claim for compensation from the Crown where land is compulsorily acquired. “It is standard practice in a negotiation for one party not to present its full valuation information to the other party while the negotiation is proceeding,” a CCDU spokesperson said. Mr Duval said a mutually agreed process was needed and people were becoming frustrated. “It’s in the Crown’s interest to settle reasonably with everybody because these people will then be invited to re-engage in the reconstruction process.” The property council and valuation tribunal were due to make a submission to Cera.

The ceremony was held at noon on Sunday, December 16, at Pilgrims Rock, on Lyttelton’s waterfront, attended by about

40 people. Each year descendants of Canterbury’s early European settlers gather at the spot, with some wearing period costume, to honour and commemorate their ancestors, who arrived on four sailing ships into Lyttelton in 1850. The Charlotte Jane was the first to arrive on December 16, closely followed by the Randolph. The Sir George Seymour arrived on December 17 with the Cressy arriving on December 27. Photo: Supplied

All other homes will be repaired by the end of 2015. All claims for land damage will be settled by the end of 2014 at the latest.

Why are we drilling? Geotechnical information is needed so that appropriate foundation designs can be developed. This will assist us in settling building and land claims, and allow EQC to establish whether the risk of liquefaction damage in a future earthquake has changed.

How long will drilling take? By the end of December we will have completed foundation damage drilling in all suburbs that require it and have the more specialised land damage investigations well underway. By then over 3,500 holes will have been drilled in all TC3 suburbs. We expect to finish work on drilling for land damage claims by March 2013.

GRUELLING 100-hour working weeks have paid off for Rebuild Christchurch founder Deon Swiggs after he was named top overall business student at Canterbury Polytechnic Institute of Technology’s (CPIT) prize giving last week. Mr Swiggs, who launched Rebuild Christchurch as a volunteer organisation in the wake of the February 2011 earthquake, said he was completely surprised and humbled by the award. “To be honest I didn’t even know about the awards and was shocked when I flicked through the book and saw my name listed next to the award.” Mr Swiggs said when he started his degree in applied management in sales and marketing two days before the February 2011 earthquake, he could never have foreseen the path he would end up taking in order to graduate. “It was just chaos in the beginning but then things started to come together and I could see an opportunity to give something back and help the people of Christchurch while still managing to study. “I would work during the day and then study at night so I really haven’t had much sleep or time to relax but there is so much to be done so I am happy to be investing my time in something positive for the future of the city.” At a time when many young people decided to leave Christchurch, 26-year-old Mr Swiggs said he decided to create his own opportunities. “To be honest most of my friends have left and sometimes that can be hard but I started Rebuild Christchurch and I wasn’t going to give up on it.” CPIT allowed Mr Swiggs to fast-track his studies so he could complete a post-graduate diploma in innovation and entrepreneurship at the same time as his bachelor’s degree. The work he was doing through Rebuild Christchurch provided the perfect testing ground for his case studies and gave him realistic situations for his post-graduate thesis. “It gave me the chance to turn the bookwork on its head and see how these studies could be used in real life.

“I believe in getting things done and not just sitting back and discussing ideas. “After testing ideas within Rebuild Christchurch I was able to use these for my assessments and then I could apply the feedback from my tutors to improve both myself and the organisation.” Mr Swiggs said balancing his work and studies required a great deal of personal sacrifice. “I have invested about $70,000 of my own money into Rebuild Christchurch and as of last week I had clocked up 5000 hours of unpaid work . “Some days I would be in the office from 8am to midnight. You do get knocked down and at times you question why you’re doing this but I believe in doing the right thing for the right reason. “Seeing the Rebuild site reach six million page hits last week was a huge achievement.” Mr Swiggs planned to take a well-earned break over Christmas before getting back to work. “Next year I plan to make Rebuild into a brandless website where the community organisations will be the major focus. “The idea is to create a site full of positive information with stories from the local community. “At the same time I’ll be developing the charity side of the organisation to ensure that people out there are getting the help they need.”

We’ve had to get land information and we are dealing with a coinsurance model where assessments of damage to property are made initially to EQC, and then there is a process that has to be followed after that in terms of apportioning costs to different major events that have occurred. “It has been a question of many different issues having to be sorted and addressed before rebuild and repairs can occur.” He declined to comment on whether a change to the country’s public-private insurance model was desirable as ICNZ was still in the process of preparing a report for the government’s review of the Earthquake Commission and its view would be expressed foremost through that.

Singing for strength: The Cantabrainers Choir held its first-ever Christmas concert last week.

“Singing lifts our spirits and our mood We come to maintain and improve Building confidence in speech, are our goals to reach. Pitch, tone and volume we exude.” THESE are some of the words sung by the Cantabrainers, a choir for people with neurological conditions, which has celebrated its first year with a Christmas concert. The choir was started in February by Therapy Professionals Limited, inspired by a similar group in Auckland called the Celebration Choir. It incorporates people who have had conditions like strokes, Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis, which can affect their speaking. Therapy Professionals managing director Shonagh O’Hagan said music could help them find their voice again. “Most say their confidence has improved and they’re going out and doing things they were not doing before.” The choir is run by music therapist Kimberley Jones and speech language therapist Susan McDonald. Ms O’Hagan said last Wednesday’s concert, held at Hohepa Canterbury’s hall in Barrington Street and supported by Creative New Zealand,

was a great success. The Community Noticeboard is for non profit groups or organisations. many of the same benefits of the first proposal but came with risks if the school curriculum and staffing did not adjust to suit the educational and social needs of the students. He said the alternative options were financially viable and educationally sound. “Both options recognise the importance of the combined site of Hillmorton High and Manning Intermediate Schools to the educational landscape of the south-west of Christchurch. The combined site is in the centre of the combined Halswell, Spreydon, Hoon Hay community. It is the ideal location to create an exciting educational hub for the community.” Mr Chambers said many important official information request documents only arrived from the ministry the afternoon before Friday, December 7, when submissions were due. He said there were errors from the Ministry of Education with relation to how much it would cost to repair the school’s buildings. “The initial costing for the school was $7 million; the ministry has since reduced this figure to $5.1 million. The school, using the ministry’s own spreadsheets related to rebuild or repair, believes the actual figures are between $3.5 million and $4 million.” Mr Chambers said the only justification presented by the ministry to the Minister of Education and cabinet for closing the school was a potential saving of $7 million. “The inaccuracy of this figure raises a question about the decision on the validity of the Minister’s proposal for Manning Intermediate.” Minister of Education Hekia Parata is due to inform the school of her decision from February 18.

Quake City a boost for tourism

Plumbers

CANTERBURY Museum’s announcement this week of the new earthquake attraction, Quake City, has brought a smile to the faces of key tourism operators. Sponsored by Canterbury Museum, The Press, EQC, Fletcher Construction Ltd, Placemakers Riccarton and architecture firm Warren & Mahoney, Quake City will open in the Restart mall in February 2013 during the height of the summer tourist season. Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter said the opening of Quake City early next year could not have come at a better time, particularly when international interest in Christchurch and earthquake tourism continued to increase. “The tourism market in Christchurch reaches its peak Tourism boost: Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief towards to the end of February so executive Tim Hunter is welcoming the announcement of a new the opening of Quake City will help earthquake-related tourism attraction for Christchurch. boost the tourism activity in the region. A man of many parts Newton Dodge has, by any measure, led a full and rewarding life. Now 71, the general manager of Ferrymead Historic Park has been a businessman, a city councillor and a committed community worker, often all at the same time. He talks to Christine de Felice about his life and what gives him the greatest satisfaction. THE name Newton Dodge Blinds was widely known around Christchurch during Newton Dodge’s 45 years in business, as it was during the 27 years he spent as a Christchurch city councillor, finishing there in 1998. He enjoyed his time on the council, he says, but is pleased to now be on the outside looking in. In addition to his business and council activities, Newton has devoted many hours of his life over the years to voluntary community work. “I’ve helped quite a few groups, charitable groups, with their accounting and office work,” he says. Ten years ago, Ferrymead Historic Park was looking for someone to help on a voluntary basis with its accounting and to computerise its administration. Newton took on the role, initially for two afternoons a week. “That grew into a paid part-time position. Then three and a half years ago, when the general manager, Maureen Power, left, I helped out for a short time until someone was appointed permanently.” No-one else was, so Newton officially took on the role. He says he has always had an interest in things historic, and the heritage of New Zealand, an interest he believes becomes stronger for many people as they get older. “I don’t have anything to do with the actual running of the various activities, though. There are 19 different societies at Ferrymead running the trains, trams, buses, planes and so on. I administer the people using the park. My job is to see that

the paying visitors have an enjoyable experience by making sure that everything is clean and tidy and that things are running smoothly. With my previous work and community experience, this is the ideal situation for me.” His grandchildren have a different idea about his role, however. According to them, “Granddad runs the trains”. School groups are regular visitors to the park. “The park has gained a contract from the Ministry of Education to run education programmes for children,” Newton says. “The children learn about how things were done and what the lives of people were like in days gone by. While they’re here they dress up in period costumes from the 1920s, and they really enjoy it.” Children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have always been an important part of Newton’s life. For many years he and a team of willing helpers have run holiday camps where children can experience things that may not otherwise be available to them. “Something as simple as jumping on a trampoline could be completely new for some kids. They also learnt things like cooking a meal, which they might not have done at home.” Another significant aspect of Newton’s life is his Japanese connection, which has culminated in his being awarded the Order of the Rising Sun – Gold and Silver Rays by the Japanese government, which he received on December 7 at the Japanese Embassy in Wellington.

Full life: Newton Dodge has recently been recognised for his service to Japan. Photo: Christine de Felice

He says his interest in Japan was first sparked when he went to the World Expo in Osaka in 1970 as part of a 15-member group of Christchurch businesspeople. “New Zealand had a pavilion there and we were one of 27 countries represented. That was the beginning of New Zealand trading with Japan.” Newton initiated other connections with Japan through student exchange programmes, which began during his international relations role on the city council. “We took a group of students from Christchurch to Japan, where they went to a Japanese school, went shopping and stayed with Japanese families.” He continues to facilitate these visits, which

for some of the students are the start of a keen interest in Japan and its culture, and they go on to study Japanese at university and visit the country again, Newton says. He also brings Japanese school students to Christchurch to have a similar experience of New Zealand culture. Many of the exchanges are with Christchurch’s sister city, Kurashiki. The award he received this month is in recognition of his services to Japan. The Japanese government bestows the honour on non-Japanese citizens every year and Newton is the only New Zealander to receive the award this year. He is proud to receive the award and says organising the exchange visits is “one of the best things I will ever do”.

Other supporting acts include the Christchurch City Chorus, the Vocal Network, Men Aloud and Aftershock. Canterbury Plainsmen musical director Edward Dempsey said the event came together by fluke and it was like all their Christmases had come at once. “The group from Sweden have been on a cruise ship since July and final stop was in Brisbane and the Musical Island Boys arranged for them to fly and do concerts in the North Island. I knew we had to be in on this.” He said every group would perform some Christmas songs but there would be a wide variety of other songs as well. “It’s really a once in a lifetime opportunity to have these two groups of this level at the same place at the same time in Christchurch.” Mr Dempsey said it was an opportunity

The history of Wigram Air Base and military aviation in the Canterbury region of New Zealand is brought to life by story-teller Bee Dawson. Bee interweaves the tales of early aviators, the influential people who developed the base, the ordinary air force personnel who lived there, and the key events of military aviation in the south of New Zealand. The many illustrations make this a thoroughly accessible history for aviation and military enthusiasts alike.

World-class acts to feature at music festival

moving back down south. Purely because of industry, networking and performance opportunities around the North Island. Canterbury will always be my home and my dream is to have a studio there one day at Whitecliffs and another overlooking the city for inspiration. How much were you influenced by your father’s music? I think my strong sense and love of melody has been passed down from my father’s music and records growing up. I can still recite songs and melodies that I have heard him sing from when I was young because they never leave your memory. The Whitecliffs festivals and music that I witnessed growing up on a festival site opened my ears to jazz, blues, rock, country, folk - everything under the rainbow. Have you been influenced by other artists, and if so, who? Quite hard to answer but my major influences/ albums have been: Ben Harper - Fight for your mind, Cinematic Orchestra - Everyday, The Herbaliser - Blow your headphones, Jaylib Champion Sound, Bireli Lagrene - Standards, John Mayer - Live in LA. Most recently I’ve

The South Island’s biggest music event, Rhythm and Alps, running over two days at Terrace Downs, will feature some of the most cuttingedge and diverse talent from around the world and New Zealand. The line-up will include SBTRKT, Disclosure, Netsky, Ruby Frost, Flume, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Chali 2na and Amiria Grenell, with the festival being held on December 28-29. Christine de Felice caught up with musician/producer Oakley Grenell, son of John Grenell, who has been based in Australia for the last few years and will be performing in the opening act. Christine de Felice: Why did you choose Australia as the place to further your career rather than say the United States? Oakley Grennell: In 2009 I had sorted out a working visa for Canada and was intending to head to Toronto but I had to mix the Departure Lounge In Session album with the Nomad who lived in Melbourne. I rented a room for three months in mid-2009 and fell in love with the city, the music scene, a girl and the food culture. So I let my Canadian visa chance slip by and settled here in April 2010, got a teaching job two weeks later and started work on my sister Amiria’s Tui Awardwinning album Three Feathers. I have spent in total about a month and a half in the US and have always had dreams of trying to break into the scene over there but age and mortgages have affected my thinking. I do have a plan to visit many places in the future and take my laptop and mic and jam/ record with locals across the globe, touching on lots of different genres in the music realm. Do you plan to stay there permanently or would you return to New Zealand? I would probably give Auckland a go before

been listening to Santigold, Mala In Cuba, Kendrick Lamar. How would you describe your music? My music is jazz / blues / bass influenced music, has to have melody. Each release has been slightly different in influence and genre. Do you plan to collaborate with your sister on any future recordings? Yes I would like to do a collaboration with both of us writing folk acoustic stuff, both singing harmonising etc. Just have to find the time. Are you looking forward to the Rhythm and Alps gig? Hell yes, I’m gonna be representing west Canterbury, Whitecliffs style up there for three sets: opening the festival with Amiria’s band on bass, Departure Lounge the next day on guitar/ vox, then run to another tent and DJ as O.G., and brother Redford DJ’s after me. Grenells are running the Alps!

Week one: Insert one drop into the filter of each cigarette (immediately before lighting up) by making a small indentation with the nozzle of the NicoBloc bottle and then squeeze the filter to allow absorption of the liquid. This blocks 33 per cent of the nicotine and tar.

Week two: Insert two drops by repeating the process above. This helps block up to 66 per cent of the nicotine and tar. Week three: Add three drops of NicoBloc to each cigarette filter to effectively block up to 99 per cent of the harmful nicotine and tar ingested.

ocated in what I believe is Christchurch’s most desirable and up-and-coming suburb is this rarely available large parcel of land in two titles. With a total of 2234m2 on offer you have the ability to purchase the whole thing or either the 1464m2 site with house, or the 770m2 tennis court front section. Beautifully north-facing and zoned TC2 land, there should really be no holding you back! The original concrete block home features four bedrooms, two living areas and is very rentable. Our current vendors have designed a stunning large home deserving of such a great location and parcel of land, plans for which can be transferred to the new owners should you desire. Options here are really plentiful – land bank, subdivide down or just build your dream home. For more information or to arrange a private viewing contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 0275 557 079. I live in the area so it must be good!

Wishing all my clients a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Over recent years, flat-leaf parsley (Italian parsley as it’s sometimes referred to) has been gaining momentum, due to the plethora of TV gardening and cooking programmes. The next most popular are chives, coriander, thyme, sage and rosemary. Fresh is certainly best and flavour is always king. Fresh herbs add zingy flavours to festive fare. If you don’t have them in your garden, ask around and you may be able to swap some of what you have with friends and neighbours. Keep planting As the weather warms, it’s a good idea to plant a few more batches of the annual herbs, such as coriander, basil, dill, chervil and rocket. All of these can be grown from seed but ready-grown seedlings are the quicker option, and in some case are almost ready to use as soon as they are planted. Take them on holiday It’s not as silly as it sounds; take a few of your herb pots with you to the bach or the camping ground. Herbs can be in short supply in holiday areas, so taking your own ensures your food will have that X factor that only fresh herbs can provide. Pinch out the tips Pinch out the tips of actively growing herbs to encourage more growth from the base of the plant. This is particularly important for basil, as it naturally wants to flower and as soon as it does it stops producing the tasty leaves we want to eat. Liquid gold Soft herbs, such as parsley, chervil, dill, basil and coriander, thrive on liquid fertiliser and particularly Seasol, a seaweed-based plant food, or try comfrey tea. Apply to the soil once a fortnight.

Borage attracts bees to the garden.

Herb and edible flower ice blocks A number of soft herbs can be frozen into ice cubes to use on a warm summer’s day. Basil, mint, lemon balm and lemon verbena all work well. Edible frozen flowers look fabulous, too. Simply pick borage, calendula petals or nasturtiums and freeze into mini muffin tins and, hey presto, frozen ice-cube flowers. Once the flowers or herb cubes are frozen, they can be transferred into snap lock bags and kept in the freezer, while another batch is being frozen. Drop a cube or two into a fruity cider or something served with tonic.

Marigolds are a pretty and useful addition to the herb garden.

Basket cases Numerous herbs work well in large hanging baskets and window boxes. Chives, coriander, chervil, dill, pizza thyme, oregano, prostrate rosemary and chamomile ‘Treneague’ are good choices.

Watering Ensure that herbs never become stressed Bee friendly Comfrey and borage are fantastic for due to drying out as this will cause some of the annual soft herbs, such as dill, parsley, attracting bees to your garden, which will aid chervil and coriander, to go straight to seed. in the pollination of plants.

Mint, parsley, rosemary and Vietnamese mint.

CANTERBURY batsman Dean Brownlie is relishing being back in the Black Caps squad for the current South African tour, after sitting out the recent series in Sri Lanka. Brownlie is not part of the Twenty20 side, which has its first game tomorrow, but will join the squad for the two-test series which begins on January 2. His recall comes after he was dropped following a poor showing in the Black Caps’ disastrous mid-year tour of West Indies. However, in October he spent two weeks in India working on his technique in low, slow and spin-friendly conditions. During that time he put in around six hours of batting a day and Brownlie said the sessions had helped him make improvements. “Little things like staying a bit lower and being in a better position to a slow low wicket,” he said. “It’s quite hard when there’s not good pace on the ball so it’s just being in a good position where you can generate your own pace.

“Some of the technical changes I’ve made have hopefully made me a better player in all conditions and I think going over to South Africa, I’ll be able to use some of those things.” Brownlie was aware that coming back against the world’s number one ranked side on their home turf would be a tough assignment but was hopeful of making a good contribution if selected in the playing XI. “In their bowling and batting they’ve got so much depth and [there’s] two or three of the world’s best bowlers in their side as well so there’s not too much of a weakness there that we can see but hopefully if we play our best cricket then no doubt we can give them a run for their money.” Brownlie said there was always something to work on as an international batsman. “If you feel like you’ve nailed it you’ll be quickly of the realisation that you haven’t,” he said. “There are always people around the world inventing new ways of bowling or new balls that you’ve got to be ready for, so it’s tough.”

Successful year: After the giddy heights of 2011 that saw rally driver Hayden Paddon create motorsport history when he became the first person in the Southern Hemisphere to ever win the FIA Production World Rally Championship, 2012 has been a roller coaster ride for Paddon’s team. Despite a good start to the season the second half proved quite challenging. His last race of the year saw some positive results, winning five stages in the Rally de Espana. Paddon, 25, is back in New Zealand to re-group including the fundraising that is needed before another busy year ahead. Paddon says he has learnt a lot this season and he is keen to build on the experiences and put together a good programme for next year’s tilt at another world title. Photo: CTV News

Grants to fix Christchurch, Lincoln netball courts WHEN the new netball season opens in April 2013 there will be 12 additional courts to safely play on in Christchurch and Lincoln, repaired to outdoor playing specifications using $436,500 from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. Repairs on the six most earthquakedamaged outdoor courts at the Selwyn Netball Centre in Lincoln started on Monday. Repairs on six courts at Christchurch Netball Centre in Hagley Park will be carried

out next year. Netball’s popularity in Canterbury has not waned despite the earthquakes and with this grant the Christchurch and Selwyn Netball Centres will be able to provide their 7000 players with more competition-level courts to meet demand. As these outdoor netball courts were located on public land, unable to be fully fenced, they therefore could not be insured.

Cantabs feature in series win THE Black Sticks women finished off their unbeaten five-match hockey series against India with a 4-1 victory in Wellington on Friday night. The New Zealand side, which featured five new players from the provincial Canterbury Cats team, took the series with four wins and

a draw. One of those Cantabrians, Sian Fremaux, made an important contribution in the fourth game, a 2-2 draw in Palmerston North on Wednesday, scoring both the Black Sticks goals, including the equaliser late in the match.

People’s choice: Anton Cooper won two Rider of the Year awards from BikeNZ. Photo: Marius Maasewerd

Teenager pips Olympians for award TEENAGE mountain biker Anton Cooper beat out cycling’s Olympians to be named 2012 BikeNZ People’s Choice Award winner last week, as voted by the New Zealand public. The 18-year-old from North Canterbury made history earlier this year when he became the first ever UCI cross-country mountain bike world champion in any age group from New Zealand. This performance shot Cooper into the limelight and earned him the title of ‘people’s champion’ ahead of Olympic medallists Sarah Walker and Simon van Velthooven. “It’s pretty cool, I guess, being voted by the public reflects both sporting ability and also indicates what sort of person you are as well. It’s a pretty cool acknowledgement and a great honour,” Cooper said. “I think the public is often the truest voting system, rather than a panel of four or five people, so to be recognised by the New Zealand public is really cool.” It wasn’t all bad for the Olympic cyclists,

however, as they snapped up seven of the eight 2012 BikeNZ Rider of the Year awards. Cooper also won the male mountain bike rider of the year award. He will have his awards formally presented at the Mountain Bike National Championships in Rotorua in February. After a phenomenal 2012, 2013 will bring new mountains for Cooper to climb. He has just signed a two-year deal with international mountain bike team Cannondale Factory Racing, after his previous team, Trek World Racing, decided to forgo their crosscountry commitments to focus solely on gravity [downhill] racing. He will be based in Germany for five months each year during the New Zealand winter, racing UCI cross country world cups across Europe and in North America. As well as changing team, he is also changing age bracket, moving up from under 19 to under 23 category.

Put your thinking cap on these holidays AS we head into the festive season it also signals the round of barbeques and a couple of quiets with mates. Invariably the talk turns to sport and obscure questions, such as, who played in which game? What was the score in such and such a match? I must admit as I get older I find it’s a lot easier to recall teams and results from sporting fixtures three decades ago than the year just gone. The holiday season also coincides with the naming of the nominations for the annual Halberg Awards which are dished out in February each year. People I mix with have very strong views and an argument can be put up that it is really unfair to put one sport up against another. Another argument is that the major national sports always get the recognition while the smaller sports struggle to get a foot in the door. This year’s sporting achievements will always be judged alongside Olympic performances, a fact that occurs every four years. Of course there is an argument for this because it is a long held belief that the Olympic Games

are the pinnacle of sporting achievement. Sure that’s unfair for non-Olympic sports but then sport’s not always fair. The winners are only the opinion of the judging panel of that year. Some of the nominees will miss out this year to Olympians. Richie McCaw has had an outstanding year but is it better than the efforts of Mahe Drysdale? Valerie Adams will be the sentimental favourite but was her performance any better than those of Lisa Carrington or Lydia Ko? Then move onto the teams, were the All Blacks better than the Equestrian team? Should the men’s double sculls stand out above the men’s pair? So it will go on and on and the nights will get longer and the stubbies will start running out. Probably as happens every year it will be a nightmare job to reach agreement around the barbie so we’ll all have to meet up the next night so the debate can continue to rage. Enjoy your Christmas and New Year break because while it’s fun to debate it, remember there is really nothing we can do about the outcome! Cheers and I’ll be back in 2013.

Ready to go another round Calling for change: Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairperson Jane Tyler-Gordon has put a lot of time into anti-alcohol campaigns in her community. due to open early next year. Construction on the site has already begun. She said the new legislation would put a huge strain on communities where energy and expertise was required to fight big business interests. “Our community was prepared to speak up but it is easy to become dispirited when the Government openly flies in the face of all the expert advice. “I think they just didn’t have the strength, to do it and go against the business. Nobody was prepared to say no and yet they are prepared to accept all the related costs on health and the damage that is done from the abuse of alcohol.” National Addiction Centre director Professor Doug Sellman said new laws did not contain any substantial reforms and did nothing to address the commercialisation of alcohol. Prof Sellman said it showed a lack of leadership by the government by leaving it up to communities to take on the alcohol industry. “It’s going to be an enormous amount of hard work and the

A CHRISTCHURCH residents group which has fought hard to address alcohol-related problems in its neighbourhood is among those preparing to go another round, with new laws requiring local councils to consult with their communities about the sale and supply of alcohol. The alcohol reform legislation passed its final reading in Parliament on December 11. The changes included giving local communities, through councils, a say on things like trading hours and the location of liquor outlets. Liquor licences would also be made harder to get and easier to lose. Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairperson Jane Tyler-Gordon said the law did not go far enough and it would now be left to residents to lobby their councils, which were now working on their Local Alcohol Policies. Ms Tyler-Gordon spent many hours helping lead a campaign against a new Henry’s liquor outlet being established on the corner of Yaldhurst and Avonhead roads. The store’s liquor licence was issued in April and the store was

alcohol industry, which is very well-heeled, will be right in there, right from the word go, lobbying and working out the best way of delaying anything because the status quo is what really benefits them.” However, Justice Minister Judith Collins said the new laws, which will come in to force in stages, would bring lasting change to the country’s drinking culture. “For the first time in more than two decades Parliament has acted to restrict, rather than relax, our drinking laws.” The Christchurch City Council’s planning committee chairperson Sue Wells said the council looked forward to drafting its Local Alcohol Policy and consulting the community about it, now the law had been passed. Strategic Policy Unit manager Alan Bywater said council staff members have already been carrying out background work with key stakeholders, such as the Medical Officer of Health, the Police and Hospitality New Zealand, along with randomly surveying more than 4000 residents to get their views on alcohol in the community.

THE Spencer Park Surf Life Saving Club’s view of the beach is minimal, club president Grant Edwards says. It is the only surf life saving club in Christchurch owned by the council and Mr Edwards would like to work with the council to develop the club, which he says is a “rundown facility” below the club’s “needs”. The club had spoken to the council over the last four years and the councillors were generally supportive of what the club would like to do but he appreciated the earthquakes had interrupted priorities. Council’s help was needed to “identify if there are any stumbling blocks” for a new facility to be built, he said. “We are coming to a point where decisions need to be made.” Mr Edwards said the club had grown over the years and the facility needed to be bulldozed and rebuilt. The club house was built in 1969 when Spencer Park was becoming a popular beach

location and the council recognised the need for the facility. It has been a lifeguard facility for Spencer Park since then. Mr Edwards said it was set too far from the beach for proper views for the lifeguards, it leaked, was “cold, dark and damp” and the only access to the first aid room was a steep stairway or vertical ladder. He said a surf life saving club should be the natural place to gravitate for people who liked the beach but the club cannot provide this. The club house failed to accommodate events, beach education, local groups and sports organisations as there was a lack of space. Mr Edward’s vision for the club included a gym and a club house lounge. “It should be a place where the whole family is becoming involved at all levels. The social feel and family only enhances more participation and the community spirit,” he said. The community hall has just been demolished and Mr Edwards believed

there was now a greater need for a suitable community facility. He would also like the club to be able to work with other groups and organisations if it was rebuilt. “We are open to discussions,” he said.

Ready to go another round Calling for change: Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairperson Jane Tyler-Gordon has put a lot of time into anti-alcohol campaigns in her community. She’s one of those having to do it all again, when the Christchurch City Council consults on its Local Alcohol Policy in the New Year. due to open early next year.

Looking to the future: Reverend Mark Chamberlain talks to church supporters about the vision for a repaired St Barnabas.

Fundraising bid to save Fendalton church Jessica Schaap

A FUNDRAISING Trust was launched last Friday on the front lawn of Fendalton Road’s St Barnabas Anglican church. The church suffered major damage from the Christchurch 2010/2011 earthquakes and the trust has been formed in a bid to restore it. The church is a historic places category one building, which identifies it as having “special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance” and a group one building under the Christchurch city plan. The church was built to replace the 1876 timber church, which was originally built for the parish of Riccarton and was constructed as a local church for Fendalton residents. St Barnabas was designed by architect Cecil Wood and opened in 1926. It is one of the few New Zealand churches built as a

memorial to the fallen of World War One. The building has a concrete core, volcanic stone on the exterior and limestone on the interior. According to the Devonport-based conservation architect, Dave Pearson, who has been assigned to consult on St Barnabas church, its core is why it did not completely collapse like some other stone churches in Christchurch. Refurbishing and structurally strengthening the church will be a financial challenge for the parish. So far, just over $100,000 has been donated to the repair and the target is $1 million. Vicar of the Parish of Fendalton Mark Chamberlain is confident the money will be raised.

“Often people feel quite committed to their local church and we have a very large local support base,” he said. The parish’s six congregations and community groups have been meeting at the less-damaged church hall adjacent to the church. Ex-CEO of Ballantynes Department Store Richard Ballantyne said he would make the St Barnabas restoration trust work a major personal focus in 2013 and there were potential fundraisers who were likely to put time and effort into raising funds for the church, including parishioners and community trusts. “With the help of others I hope we get there, but these things usually take a bit of work and time,” Mr Ballantyne said.

Young student organises fundraising for City Mission Jessica Schaap

ELEVEN-year-old McKenzie Preston from Mairehau Primary School organised fundraising for the City Mission Appeal tree at Riccarton House. On November 27 she organised a mufti day for her school where she got pupils to bring either a donation or a toy. The mufti day was “quite easy” to organise, she said. She had to organise a school notice and collect the toys. She raised $328.50 in donations and used it to buy more toys for the tree, then took the

donated toys home and washed and wrapped them with help from her mother. It took her about one week of washing and fixing the toys and a few days to wrap them. This was the first time McKenzie had done something like this, and she was inspired by Christmas. “I always got really excited about Christmas and the thought of other kids not getting anything made me very, very sad, so if I could make them happy and enjoy Christmas too, that will be great,” she said.
