Cover ebruary will forever be my month of love. Not only does Valentine’s Day fall right in the middle, but I got married this year on the 1st! So to celebrate our love theme we’ve included a couple of weddings in this month’s mag – perhaps once I have my pics back, I’ll share a few of those with you. Well it’s been a funny old year so far, hasn’t it?
What with raging storms, floods, fires and mayhem in some of our smaller centres, it’s seemed at times that all hell is breaking loose, not to mention the fiscal cliff, whatever that is. And then there’s the end of the holidays and summer break and the gloomy prospect of a return to work for some, and the even gloomier prospect of a return to no work for others. And the year’s barely started. Just thank your lucky stars you were not one of the numerous fruitloops convinced that the world was going to end on December 21st. Or if you were, good luck – maybe it has. Personally, I’ve ripped up my Mayan calendar and consigned it to the recycle bin. There’s bound to be another doomsday/apocalypse theory and date later in the year.
iven these events, or lack thereof, I thought it was high time to lift the mood of the populace with a joke. But this is not just any joke, eager readers. This is a joke so tortured, twisted and groan-making that it almost resembles art. With the annual Buskers’ Festival just been, it’s probably appropriate for this time of year. It’s also timely in that I was in one of the large areas of the country which ran out of ice in the holiday period. This is for real. It was during those extremely hot days in late December and much of January when most of the nation baked. Southland, Otago and much of South Canterbury experienced a dearth of ice, that precious frozen commodity, which wasn’t to be had for love nor money. Apparently the stuff was flying out of the pubs, service stations and bottle shops, faster than the icemaking machines could make it. Ice became a very tradable commodity for campers, trampers, boaties and holiday makers, bereft of a fridge. So here we go: the ice joke. Remember, you were warned.

A wild-eyed fellow stumbled into a bottle shop and asked for a box of rum and coke RTDs and a bag of ice. When these were provided, he regarded the bag of ice on the counter suspiciously. “Is this DB ice?” he asked. “Yes, we’re a DB pub,” replied the barman. “Well I don’t want DB ice,” our man announced. “I’d like a bag of New Zealand Breweries ice… Lion Ice.” “We don’t have Lion Ice,” said the barman patiently. “This is a DB pub. We get our ice from DB.” “I don’t want DB ice,” reiterated our friend, becoming increasingly agitated. “I want Lion Ice.” “We don’t bloody have any!” “Yes you do. I saw a truck come in. You’ve got the Lion Ice out the back and you’re keeping it for yourselves and your mates.” A small crowd had gathered by this time and the mood was becoming increasingly heated, especially given the lack of ice. The barman tried to reason with the man. “Look, this is a DB pub,” he repeated. “We don’t have Lion Ice.” “Yes you do,” our man insisted. It’s around here somewhere. I just know it… feel it in me bones.” “I don’t care what you feel in your bones you nutcase,” shouted the barman. “Look in the chiller, look in the freezer. How many times do I have to tell you. We don’t stock Lion Ice!” “Yes you do,” “No we don’t. What makes you think we do?” “I saw the truck deliver it.” “You imagined it.” “No I didn’t.” “What makes you so convinced?” “Because,” said the man. He turned from the counter, faced the crowd, threw his arms open in a theatrical gesture and began to sing: “You can’t hiiiiiiide…. your Lion Ice…. You can’t hide your Lion Ice…..” he sang. “Ain’t no way to hide your Lion Ice….”

012 marks 150 years since the founding of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. During the subsequent century and a half, the Canterbury A & P show has become a landmark provincial event. The association’s sesquicentennial was celebrated with a dinner at the Chateau on the Park. The annual polo tournament in aid of the facility, saw lightening fast chuakkas played with reckless looking aplomb. The cream of society, stomped the divots, to the clink of teacups and bubbly flutes. The sport of kings, princes and potentates, transformed a sunny day of fundraising, into one of Christchurch’s must attend social occasions. It does not get any smarter than this, anywhere.

just magnificent After a memorable month of frenetic air travel and a maddening schedule in the two most populous and inspirational countries in the world, the prospect of a relaxed lunch within the utterly spectacular, tranquil grounds of Christchurch’s Botanical Gardens was an irresistible one. he Curator’s House is an interesting harbergery that will not disappoint you as it offers such a credible, tangible link with this city’s past, its volcanic stone walls so much a part of what we all remember as youngsters in our ‘old’ town, its position inside the gardens offering a magnificent outlook across the grounds to the north. I was deeply struck by the clarity of the air, the beautiful vividity of the natural colours of the grass, the plants and the flowers after the polluted hazes of the megalopolises of India and China; and then there were the birds a-twittering in the trees to produce an uplifting natural symphony of indescribable joy. It was good to be home! Whether you find yourselves at a table under an umbrella on the patio, perched on the delightful verandah or inside looking out the leadlight windows the experience is likely to be an agreeable one. A glass of Main Divide Pinot Noir 2009 was an adequate enough way to settle in and it worked well enough with the “homemade” smoked Paprika and pork chargrilled shoulder
chorizo, agria potato sliced and sautéed pimentos, the entrée. The standout at this stage of the meal, however, was the sautéed fresh spinach with pine nuts and raisins – a simple yet felicitous combination of ingredients, an effusive detonation of taste! Hot on the heels of the entrée was the house’s much acclaimed Lamb Chilindron, “tender lamb cooked in a traditional ragout topped with crispy diced potatoes”. Arguably not the best choice on a warm summer’s day but easily complemented with a side salad or the sautéed spinach mentioned above. The wine list is worth a scan when dining here as there is a creditable selection of Hawke’s Bay and Australian reds along with a palatable crosssection of New Zealand whites to suit all tastes. From Spain comes everything from Sangria, to Rioja reds, Pedro Ximenez port and Fino sherry. I am keen to try the house specialty on my next visit, Paella Mixta, as this will be a true test of the restaurant. “Chicken and seafood tossed with Saffron scented rice, tomatoes and vegetables”. ¡Yo no puedo esperar!

hristmas was celebrated at St George’s Hospital in December. The garden party for staff and guests, took place in perfect weather, on the lawn of the cancer care unit. The gap left by the demolition of the well loved main wing, didn’t dampen the spirits of the party goers. Seasonal greetings were exchanged, and glasses raised, as all associated with St George’s, look forward to a new year of rebuilding, renewal and caring for the health of Canterbury. Child Cancer Foundation Christmas Party Brilliant day, brilliant smiles
A
liberal helping of much needed Christmas cheer, was provided for some very special children in December. Torrential rain which fell the previous day, dried up in time for the Child Cancer Foundation Christmas Party, held in the grounds of Christchurch International Airport. The day was hosted by Charlotte Smulders, through the Smulders Family Charitable Trust, with generous support from the Canterbury Community Trust, which ensurred everyone had a good time. The fun of the fair included pony rides, clowns, mini jeeps and games as well as endless ice cream and other goodies. The highlight was a visit from Santa himself, bearing presents for one and all. Season’s greetings, every one!
