KAIAPOI has been granted two sets of funding in the latest round of Christchurch Earthquake Appeal grants. Two million dollars has gone towards the Kaiapoi Riverbanks Project for repair of walkways and other public amenities along the Kaiapoi River through to the Kaiapoi township. The $2 million is now available to the Waimakariri District Council to stimulate this project and begin work. Waimakariri Mayor David Eyers said it was “exciting” for Kaiapoi to have this grant. “The Kaiapoi River is very important to Kaiapoi, it is the centre of the town and is important to Kaiapoi’s history. We are very grateful to the earthquake appeal trust. A lot

It will be great to have riverbank reserves along the riverbank restarted and get the walking back.” The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal has also granted $200,000 to repair the Cure Boating Club’s building on the Kaiapoi River that was particularly damaged in the September 2010 earthquake. The club has been holding rowing events on the Kaiapoi and Waimakariri rivers since 1868. It was established to cure the “fierce” rivalry between professional Kaiapoi River rowing crews that used to meet for highprofile races on the Waimakariri and Kaiapoi rivers in the early 1860s.

Members come mainly from North Canterbury and surrounding towns - Rangiora and Kaiapoi - and a significant number come from Christchurch city. Club president Paul Curgenven said the club was well on its way to raising the $1.8 million needed to complete the project, which includes increased boat storage and room for the community to use, with the grant, insurance and fundraising. “The extra space is needed because we have more boats to store (more rowers means more boats) and the top storey is needed for a weights/gym room, ergometer space and club room/community-use space.
