Sumner resident takes anti-nuclear action Christine de Felice THE disaster in Japan that closely followed the Christchurch earthquake prompted Sumner resident Yasue Parker to become involved in an anti-nuclear campaign. Mrs Parker, who has lived in New Zealand for 14 years, moved to Sumner after her Avondale home was severely damaged in the February earthquake. She and her Kiwi husband chose to move there because of the suburb’s community spirit, she said. When the Japanese quake and tsunami

happened a few weeks after the Christchurch quake, her thoughts turned to her own country’s people. “In our disaster I was thinking of Japan’s and I wanted to help,” Mrs Parker said. Her opportunity came when she met Kuniko Koyama, from Tokyo. Mrs Koyama and her husband had come to Christchurch in January this year as refugees of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The two women met at a meeting in

Christchurch held by people who had come from the tsunami-stricken area in Japan. They discussed how they could recover from the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami. Mrs Koyama was very concerned about what was happening in the area. “Soon after the earthquake, all of Japan’s 54 nuclear plants were shut down, but then in July this year two were reopened. And the plants at Fukishima are still emitting radiation into the air and into the ocean,” Mrs Koyama said. Continued on page 3

New fort offers challenges and fun for children AFTER four years of fundraising and planning by the local community, children from Moa Kids Early Learning Centre in Barnett Park, Redcliffs are enjoying their newly completed fort. Teacher Jordana Clarke said the climbing structure had been an instant hit and was used extensively by the children aged from two to five years. They now have new challenges and opportunities to integrate their own imaginary play into how they use the structure, Ms Clarke said.

Maiden visit highlight of Akaroa’s cruise ship season THE maiden visit of the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship will be a highlight of this summer’s cruise ship season in Akaroa. The Akaroa visit will be part of the Cunard Line ship’s inaugural Royal Circumnavigation of New Zealand, starting with her arrival in the Bay of Islands on March 10, 2013. From there the ship will make her way down the country, stopping at Auckland, Wellington, Akaroa and cruising into Milford Sound. The arrival of the first ship, Sea Princess, on October 12, marked the start of Akaroa’s 2012/2013 cruise ship season, during which the port will be the busiest in the country, with 86 ship visits. They include the Cunard Line’s other cruise ships, Queen Elizabeth and Queen

Victoria, which will be here in February and March. The economic benefits of cruise ship visits are significant, and this season they are expected to pump more than $30 million into Christchurch and Akaroa through crew and passenger spending, port fees, fuel and provedoring. Volunteer ambassadors greet passengers as they disembark and a free, non-stop shuttle service runs all day from one end of the Akaroa township to the other. Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism (CCT) plans to survey cruise ship passengers this season to document their on-shore activities and spend.

Cruise ship visits on hold for Lyttelton LYTTELTON Port of Christchurch (LPC) is unable to accept bookings for the majority of cruise vessels for the 2013/2014 cruise season, the company announced last week. In March 2012, LPC said it would defer the development of new cruise berth facilities pending a comprehensive review of port development and enhancement plans after the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The review of development and enhancement plans included reassessing the original cruise berth plans and the proposed designs, in light of the seismic activity. Chief executive Peter Davie said the port was currently working through options for cruise berth development, design, construction and funding. “Given the complex nature and the limited timeframe, it will be challenging to meet the opening of the 2013/2014 cruise season

in October 2013. When we do the cruise berth development we will need to take into account infrastructure such as roads and parking for coaches, to provide customers with an experience that is up to international standards.” Mr Davie said the cruise industry remained a priority for tourism in Canterbury and LPC would continue to play a role. The port will still cater to small cruise vessels that can berth in the inner harbour. “With the new cruise facilities, we have to do it right first time around and we have to be fiscally responsible. It has been a difficult decision, but in the long run it will prove to be the right decision. “We would like to thank our cruise customers for their patience and understanding, in what has been an extremely challenging time,” Mr Davie said.

The presentation will take place at 10am. The group also hoped to raise funds to bring Japanese families from Fukishima to New Zealand for a short holiday. Families here would provide accommodation, but they needed to raise funds for the air fares, Mrs Koyama said. “We must learn from Fukishima. We want to make it an international issue, not to use nuclear power,” she said. Mrs Koyama said demonstrations in New York against nuclear power and in Sydney against the exportation of uranium showed there was growing international support for the anti-nuclear stance. Mrs Parker said she hoped to organise a slide show event of images from the Fukishima disaster to provide an opportunity for people to discuss what had been learnt from that event and from the Christchurch earthquakes, and to exchange ideas about how future disasters could be managed in New Zealand and in Japan.

She set up the Committee for the Immediate Abolition of Japan’s Nuclear Energy Policy, and in July this year, the 10 members, including Mrs Parker, started collecting signatures for a petition to present the Japanese government. It requests the immediate stop to the restarting of nuclear power plants in Japan. All the signatures were collected through talking to people directly, not through the internet, Mrs Parker and Mrs Koyama said. Most of the signatures had come from Kiwi people, for which they were very appreciative. “We are very grateful to the people who supported the campaign and showed sympathy for what the Japanese people have been through. despite the difficult time they have had after the big earthquakes in Christchurch,” Mrs Koyama said. By the end of last week 4500 signatures



Penguin victim of dog attack CONSERVATION authorities are urging people to be cautions when out walking with their dogs following the death of a little blue penguin after a dog attack. The penguin had to be put down after suffering severe injuries from the dog at Taylor’s Mistake late last month. It was the second penguin to be killed by a dog on Christchurch beaches in the past six months. Department of Conservation (DOC) ranger Anita Spencer said the death was completely avoidable. “It serves as yet another reminder that people need to keep their dogs on a leash or under close control at all times.” The attack happened very quickly and all it took was one bite to inflict fatal injuries, she said. While she praised the dog’s owner for picking up the bird and contacting DOC, Ms Spencer said for the penguin, it was too little, too late. “People don’t like to think that their dog would attack wildlife but it is natural behaviour for dogs.” Christchurch City Council animal control team leader Mark Vincent said it was up to owners to control their dogs on beaches where wildlife was present. “Our message is simple: either control your dog with a leash or stay away altogether. “Council staff will be patrolling Christchurch beaches to ensure dogs are under control but it’s up to dog owners to prevent unnecessary

incidents like this from happening.” In April Ms Spencer picked up a yellow-eyed penguin from Southshore beach with dog-bite injuries after being alerted by a member of the public but it later died. Little blue penguins, which are known as white-flippered penguins in Canterbury, nest in small numbers on rocky foreshores in the region. At this time of year the penguins cross beaches almost daily and are pairing up and laying eggs. At only about 25cm tall and weighing just 1kg, they cannot defend themselves from attack. Members of the public are urged to contact the Department of Conservation via the DOC emergency hotline number 0800 DOCHOT (0800 36 24 68) to report injured native wildlife or instances of animal attack.

CHRISTCHURCH City Council has closed four community facilities on Banks Peninsula after receiving the results of engineering assessments that show they are earthquakeprone. They are Okains Bay community centre, Duvauchelle community hall, Little Akaloa community hall and the Little Akaloa clubrooms. The Little Akaloa community hall and clubrooms are on the same site. All the buildings have been assessed as having a seismic capacity of less than 34 per cent of the New Building Standard (NBS) and are therefore earthquake-prone. They are being closed in line with an agreed approach by council members that all buildings with a seismic capacity of less than 34 per cent should not remain occupied. Although engineers say that the halls and the clubrooms have incurred little or no earthquake damage, all four have no subfloor (underfloor) bracing, which is considered to be a major structural weakness. Council corporate services general manager Paul Anderson said the council was mindful of the disruption this will cause to the communities affected. “We are conscious that closing these buildings will be a huge blow to these communities but, with the knowledge that these buildings are earthquake-prone, the council must take action to ensure that residents are not put at risk in the event of future earthquakes. “We will be asking engineers to urgently develop strengthening options for these buildings and to determine how much the required work may cost. Once we have this information we will take recommendations to elected members to make decisions. WITH the success of the Sumner-Van Asch community garden come new challenges. One is to find more space to grow food within the Sumner area. Another is to find a way to distribute the resulting produce in a way that ensures it gets to the people who need it most, but also follows a sustainable operational model. Ooooby (Out of our own backyards) local food distribution pioneer Pete Russell recently shared his experience in vege-box distribution. As well as investing in community gardening, he stressed the importance of working with and supporting existing small-scale farmers in the wider region. These growers are experienced, have the facilities in place and are vital anchors to the supply for any vege box scheme. Mt Pleasant farmers market has a great selection of local growers and in the coming weeks we are seeking to establish a home delivery vege box distribution to the Sumner and Redcliffs areas (including the hills). More details and the opportunity to register your interest are available at www.gardencity.org.nz. Alongside the vege box distribution is a project we are calling the’ local growers collective’. This involves negotiating access to spaces within our community that are currently unused or not productive – our own yards for example. The resulting produce is shared

among landowners and growers and can be traded with the vege box distributors. Surplus revenue will be invested in more local growing operations, training for volunteers, enhancing food education in schools and much more. The local growers collective will not only solve the problem of needing more space for community gardeners to grow, but will also create a support network for those wanting a little extra help in their own gardens. It also creates an avenue for marketing the things we are good at producing on a small scale. We are seeking investors to help us develop these new opportunities and would love to talk with potential partners. Monetary donations can be made through the Sumner Community website, donations of materials and specialised services are always welcome too. The final challenge is to weave all this into the great community and natural environment we have here in Sumner. As part of a Localising Food Tour, there is some research being done to identify opportunities for improving our local food systems and integrating this with recovery of the natural environment. Strawberry macaroon tarts Makes 6

Macaroon base 3 egg whites ¾ C sugar 3 C desiccated coconuts Preheat oven to 140 degrees Celsius. Combine the egg whites, sugar and coconut in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly and divide evenly into a well-greased medium muffin tin. Press mixture firmly over the base and up the sides (wetting your fingers helps). Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until macaroon shells are firm and lightly golden. Raspberry chocolate filling ½ cup single cream 125g dark chocolate, chopped 2 eggs 2 tablespoons caster sugar 2 tablespoons GF or regular self-raising flour (both work really well) 200g strawberries, fresh or frozen Turn oven temperature up to 160C. Place the cream and chocolate in a saucepan over a low heat and stir until smooth. Remove from heat and set aside. Place the eggs and sugar in a bowl and beat until light and creamy. Fold in the flour and chocolate mixture. Spoon the chocolate mixture into macaroon shells, top with strawberries. Bake for 25 minutes or until the filling is just firm. Cool in tins. THERE’S some real energy around Mt Pleasant at the present time; it really is a great suburb to live in! Apart from the regular Saturday market that Tom is taking from strength to strength, there’s a sing-along group that meets on a Thursday afternoon, a longestablished walking group, a fortnightly produce swap meet on a Sunday afternoon and the wonderfully varied card/movie/ chillax Friday nights that Marty hosts up at the school. With Neighbourhood Week coming up we saw that as an opportunity to celebrate the neighbourliness in Mt Pleasant with a bang! On Sunday, October 28, we hope to see the hill alive with street parties, barbecues rolled out on street corners, cul-de-sacs closed off for cricket games, pocket parks taken over for touch rugby, neighbours sharing food, drink and fun! Robyn and Marty are the champions of this event and would love to hear what you are organising for your street or block – contact Robin Arnold phone 980 2890. There’s even an easy-to-use promotional invitation on which you can write the details of your event and give it to your neighbours. But that’s not all. Planning is underway for the 2013 Pleasant Day Out to be held over the weekend of February 16 to 17. This event began in 2009 as a four-hour family-fun event up at the old school reserve but last year it became an event of mega proportions. Not only was it a conduit for remembering the February 22, 2011 quake, it was also a way to bring the community together for a celebration of our resilience and ingenuity. People again camped out on the school grounds and enjoyed the 24

hours of music, food and fun. The line-up for the 2013 event is already looking pretty good so please put the date in your diaries now and join us for what will be an awesome weekend for our community. Finally, a plea to all Mt Pleasant residents. As you know we have been in consultation mode for some time on what kind of new community facility could replace our now-demolished Memorial Community Centre. Our first meeting of residents was held in September 2011 and from that we gathered initial ideas. In December we were granted $25,000 by Vodafone Foundation to draft a master plan for the community centre and, as a consequence, were able to contract architects to do that. Since May we have been talking with stakeholder groups to gauge their needs and have run both an online and paper survey of residents. The next step in the consultation process will take place on Sunday, November 4, 2pm to 4pm (with drinks and nibbles to follow). Feedback on the survey and stakeholder discussions will be presented and further ideas gathered from which the architects will draft up a concept plan. We aim to share the concept plans with the community for feedback before Christmas. As an association we are keen to consult widely and gather as many ideas as possible so that we provide a facility that will be a vibrant hub for our community well into the future. IF there’s something positive happening in the Mt Pleasant community, there’s a good chance Marty Anderson has something to do with it. The coffee cart that he sets up at the Mt Pleasant School twice a week is just one example of how Marty gets on and does things to boost the spirits of the community in the wake of the February earthquake in which Mt Pleasant was particularly hard hit. Teachers, parents, passersby, enjoy the fresh coffee Marty and his wife Clare serve between about 8.30am and 10am every Monday and Thursday morning, and it gives Marty the opportunity to talk to people and encourage positive things to happen. “It’s the little things that make a big difference,” he says. “It’s not about me, I have other people with me – it’s Marty and friends. And it’s about making things happen, helping people make connections and build relationships so the community can move forward. That’s the exciting part.” A graphic designer and web designer by profession, Marty’s business premises in Poplar Lane were destroyed in the quake, so he now works from home. Much of his time, though, is spent networking amongst the community and organising ways for people to interact. The card nights he runs on Friday at the school are another way of bringing people together to enjoy each other’s company, he says. As well as the card games there are also movies for the adults and kids. “That came about after we had screened the rubgy during the World Cup. After that was finished people were asking why we didn’t carry on with something like that, so we set up the movies. “Anyone from the community can come along to these nights – they’re on every

Friday.” While the activities take place at the school, they are not school activities, Marty says. It just provides the venue. As he says: “Where else would we do it?” Marty has two young children at Mt Pleasant School and is the chair of the board of trustees. Fellow parent Lucia Teague-Schellens says appointing him to the position was one of the best decisions the school board had made. “Marty is a tireless worker for the school. He makes sure we get the best we can of anything. He’s also tireless for the community. He’s helped create a much better community atmosphere and helps people get a better perspective on ways they can make the community better.” Mrs Teague-Schellens says any school is a part of the community but Marty has made Mt Pleasant School a bigger part of the community. Distributing packets of sunflower seeds to the community with the help of school children has been another scheme he started to bring joy to the community. “The best days are when you give out the sunflower seeds and people smile.” Then there were the ‘Munted’ T-shirts Marty designed after the quakes, and the upcoming street parties on Saturday October 28 he’s hoping will happen right round the Mt Pleasant area. The latest initiative ‘Marty and friends’ have helped roll out is the new Heathcote farmers market, which was launched last Wednesday. Next year, it will be the Pleasant day Out. As long as there are spirits to be raised and positive things to be done, it seem Marty Anderson – and friends – will be there.

Brydie Lauder Trust family fun day The Brydie Lauder Trust held a family fun day fundraiser on October 14. quilegias – or granny bonnets as they are fondly referred to – are one of those delightful perennials that just keep on giving. Their generous spirit (like all grannies) and ability to grow in very little soil means that they can pop up in even the smallest crack or crevice. One which has caught my eye the past couple of seasons is Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Clementine Salmon Rose’. It is part of a new generation of aquilegias (which in North America are called columbines) that produces masses of frilly double flowers on short, upright stems. The flowers open to a lovely rich, salmon-rose colour then develop into antique shades of mauve and almost crimson. I have mine planted among the queen of all white roses, ‘Margaret Merrill’. They look as pretty as a picture with their frilly cloaks of flowers under the lush stems of the roses. Unlike the good old-fashioned granny bonnets, this new variety doesn’t seem to set seed as readily. To bulk up my planting, I am going to try dividing up the clumps I already have once they finish flowering. As a rule, aquilegias don’t like to be disturbed once planted but I will give it a go, so I can save some of my plant budget for something

Have your say on local water management The Banks Peninsula Zone Committee wants feedback on its draft Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management. The committee is hosting four community meetings for local people, groups and organisations to provide feedback on the recommendations made in the draft ZIP. How we manage water is a key factor influencing our quality of life and prosperity both now and for future generations. Community input is vital to ensuring our water resource is managed sustainability. Once community feedback has been considered the ZIP will be updated and presented to councils as the basis for work programmes and for drafting regional plans.

The draft ZIP includes seven chapters, each focussing on a different priority area for water management. The seven chapters are: • Water supply • Biodiversity • Lake Wairewa • Wastewater • Run-off/contamination + waterways • Coastal • Education/communication

The feedback period on the Banks Peninsula draft ZIP is open from 29 October to 16 November. The Banks Peninsula Zone committee was set up under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy and had its launch in September 2011. The committee consists of five community members, four rūnanga representatives, and appointees from Environment Canterbury and Christchurch City Council.

Historic session plays out at Papatowai PERSISTENT westerlies haven’t been great for surf on the local beaches. There have been a lot of very small days but still some fun, clean conditions. There have been plenty of south swells pushing up the coast for those willing and able to travel. The water is trying hard to warm up, sitting about 13 degrees Celsius. The sleeping giant of Papatowai came to life on October 7. Papatowai in the Catlins is New Zealand’s premier big wave spot and only breaks a couple of times each year. A crew of gladiators from Christchurch headed down and survived to tell the tale of 20-foot glassy monsters as an eightmetre swell roared out of the Southern Ocean. It’s not often you get a swell of that size with favourable winds, so the session will go down in history.

It’s good to know the Kiwi big wave chargers are pushing the limits. Dunedin surfer Leroy Rust has an entry in the Oakley International Big Wave awards this year with a huge freefall drop at Papa’s and the photograph of New Brighton’s Johno Lockhart will probably qualify too. The Canterbury Scholastic surf team had a successful trip to the National Champs in Taranaki. The weather and waves weren’t the best but local surfers performed well. Harrison Whiteside, Max Marshall and Seb Johnson all made the semifinals, with Harrison and Max narrowly missing out on the finals. Jack Blackman won gold in the bodyboard event. This is Jack’s first ever nationals and a great result. The team was coached by Ambrose McNeill.

The ASP World Tour has only two events remaining and it’s still an exciting race for the world title. There are four surfers in contention. Will Kelly Slater win his 12th world title or will Mike Fanning get his third? Joel Parkinson has finished runner-up several times but has never secured the win, or perhaps the rookie of the tour, 18-year-old John Florence will cause a major upset? All four surfers are within reach and their performance at the Santa Cruz and Pipeline events will decide the winner. Check it out live at www.aspworldtour.com. Local boardriders Point Surf Team will hold a fun opening day contest at Taylors on November 25. New and old members are all welcome to attend. This will be the first PST contest in a few years, hope to see you all there.

Eva Weir of Ferrymead Bays Shakers Girls under-12 football team was a member of the Canterbury Black Girls U12, which beat the North Canterbury team to win the title. Kara Daeche of Ferrymead Bays Shakers Girls under-12 football team and Redcliffs NTC player Dani Ward were members of the Canterbury Red Girls U12 team, which was placed third equal. Dani was chosen as MVP of the Canterbury red team.

Lighter Cladding and You Building and Housing* deals with building legislation and controls. It provides information and advice about building regulations. It has published guidance on repairing and rebuilding houses damaged by the Canterbury earthquakes. If you live in the residential green zone the guidance suggests that you consider using lighter cladding and construction methods.

What are foundation technical categories?

What is meant by lighter construction and cladding?

The flat area of the residential green zone is divided into three foundation technical categories (TC1, TC2, TC3). They are a guide to the level of site investigation required and the most appropriate foundations for your home. Houses with appropriate foundations will perform better in future earthquakes.

Suspended timber floors are lighter than concrete slabs. Common types of lighter roofing are sheet and metal tile roofs. Common types of lighter cladding include:

Why recommend lighter construction in TC areas? Lighter materials reduce the weight of your home and the load placed on your on foundations. In most cases houses with lighter cladding and roofing performed better in the Canterbury earthquakes. Lighter homes are likely to be more resilient in future earthquakes and less costly to repair.

• Weatherboards, made of timber, fibre cement, PVC or aluminium • Profiled metal – pre-finished with colour or left natural • Sheet material – including ply and fibre cement • Systems which combine insulation with a pre-panted finish.

Do lighter claddings result in leaky homes? A house that is well designed and built to Building Code requirements, in a style that is appropriate to the local weather conditions, should remain weather-proof whether it is clad in lighter materials or heavy materials.

Do lighter claddings look good?

Can I use heavy cladding if I want to?

Lighter claddings can look very good and the range includes claddings that are low maintenance (like pre-finished profiled metal) or timber such as cedar and macrocarpa.

It is still possible to rebuild using heavier claddings (such as brick and tile) providing your foundations are designed appropriately for the ground conditions and can support the weight of the house.

Architect designed homes finished with lighter cladding Building and Housing ran a competition to encourage architects and designers to develop innovative and affordable home designs that could meet changing family needs. There were 140 entries to the competition. Illustrated below are three house designs, which use lighter cladding, by architects who were winners or highly commended in the competition.

750g lean Quality Mark beef or lamb for casseroling ¼ cup Moroccan seasoning 2 tsp minced garlic 1 tsp salt ¼ to ½ tsp saffron threads, (optional) ¼ cup oil 1 onion or leek, peeled, finely diced 2 waxy potatoes, unpeeled and finely diced (or parsnips) 1 large bulb fennel, trimmed and finely diced ½ cup currants 2 green chillies, deseeded and diced 2 cups Campbell’s Real Stock, Beef (reduce to 1½ cups if cooking in the slow cooker)

Method Pre-heat the oven to 140 degrees Celsius or pre-warm the slow cooker if using. Cut the meat into 2cm cubes and toss in the Moroccan seasoning, garlic, salt, saffron if using, and oil. Cover and set aside for 15 minutes. Brown the meat in a hot, lidded, ovenproof frying pan over a moderate heat, being careful not to burn the spices. Add the onion or leek, potatoes or parsnips, fennel, currants, chillies and beef stock. Stir and cover. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 1½ to 2 hours or until the meat is tender. Alternatively, cook in the slow cooker for 5 to 7 hours on low. Serve with sugar glazed pears (below), couscous and winter vegetables. • While saffron adds an authentic touch, it can be left out without affecting the overall flavour too much. • Currants add a tasty sweetness, but can easily be replaced with sultanas or diced prunes. • Pour any unused stock into an ice cube tray. Once frozen, tip the ice cubes into a suitable storage container or freezer bag, which has been labelled and dated. These can be kept frozen for up to three months.

They never would have got this far without him,” band mum/manager Kimberley Mossman said. “We are so pleased for the boys after all the work they’ve put in.” Harcourt, Hone, Malcolm and Mossman have been playing together in a band for over two years, renaming themselves Aftershock in the wake of the February quake. Harcourt plays lead guitar; Hone, drums; Malcolm, bass; and Mossman plays rhythm guitar and performs lead vocals. Hungerford described Aftershock as an unusually talented group. “I manage several youth bands across Christchurch and these guys are right up there. If they can keep it up, and they stay together, there’s no limit to what they can achieve. Starting so young gives them a huge advantage over other bands.” The winners of Rockshop’s Bandquest National Final were announced online on September 27. Aftershock won National Best Song for Day After Day, winning $200 cash for their school music department.

Annual festival coming up next month THE annual Manderley Home & Garden Festival is taking place over the second weekend of November. Held in the garden and grounds of Manderley, on Banks Peninsula, the event will showcase 140 stalls selected for their quality and originality. Food outlets will provide a range of food including healthy choices, complemented with wines and beer. Built originally in 1876, Manderley homestead will have three rooms open to the public. Practice pays off for young Sumner band YEARS of hard work and weekly band practices paid off for four boys from Sumner when they picked up the two major awards at the Christchurch final for the Rockshop’s Bandquest competition. Playing to a packed house at the College of Education’s Jack Mann Auditorium on Sunday, September 9, Aftershock overcame stiff competition from 12 other Christchurch primary and intermediate school bands. The four band members from Aftershock, Thomas Harcourt, Paddy Hone, Louis Malcolm and Angus Mossman, year 7 and 8 boys from Sumner School, were thrilled to have their collaborative songwriting efforts recognised by winning the Best Original Song award. They were even more pleased to be crowned overall regional winners, earning their entry into the competition’s national final. The award-winning original song, Day After Day, was written under the guidance of the boys’ band tutor, Nolan Hungerford, who encourages them to create their own material in weekly songwriting and band practice sessions in Sumner. Under Hungerford’s stewardship Aftershock have already had successful gigs at Methven’s Blue Pub and the Lone Star in Wanaka, in addition to a regular Tuesday night slot at the

From the popular Kiwiana beauty of “Wahine” to the dour victorian morbidity of “Boogieman” Ngati Pakeha Inks have been “a wonderful journey into what it might mean to be Pakeha” says Lester. Describing himself a long time outsider artist who also positions himself as a social commentator on the evolving identity of Aotearoa. Lester uses his Ngati Pakeha prints to invite all New Zealanders to come with him into this discussion. The depth of his conversation, as to what it is to be Pakeha is not found in any other popular NZ artists conversation. “Cognizant understanding of the possibility of unity in “The Third Space” is what Aotearoaland is about. “There is no place for “contempt before investigation” in a sound cultural philosophy”. Provocative, intelligent,

investigative prints from a Pakeha man on 21st century New Zealand’s cultural, philosophical, racial landscape. Born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1956, a self supporting artist for the last twenty years. Lester painted and studied New Zealand history and Maori/ European/Pacific centric artwork all of that time. Working as a design and display technician with the most extensive and important collection of Maori and Pacific artifacts in the World at the Auckland Institute and Museum. Typically, to retain autonomy of expression his inks are printed in house by him and are often subject to change so fall outside the usual restrictions that numbering and collating create.

EARL TuTTy In the past Earl Tutty’s work has often drawn on nostalgia, personal or universal. He works across a variety of genres, from pop styled renderings endowed with witty or provoking substance, to landscape and gestural portraiture in memory of figures iconic of an era and location. The recent series of earthquakes severely damaged his studio & home making painting difficult. In an attempt to brighten up his surroundings he started buying bunches of lilies and soon noticed the beautiful colour, detail and abstract shapes in each bloom. The

results of his observations and the recording of images taken on his phone make up the photos in his latest show, Pic. AnnA CHuRCH For someone whose work is about bringing together collections of objects, artist Anna Church is not really a collector herself. Collator certainly, curator indeed, creator for sure, and composer definitely. Church has what many would enviably term, a superb ‘eye’ - an ability to group objects to form compelling, thought-provoking and ultimately beautiful compositions. For a number of years Church has used these abilities in her work as both an artist and freelance stylist. 2011 sees Church launch a new series of limited edition prints titled ‘At Your Service’. It is the much-awaited

follow-up to her highly successful 2008 series of prints ‘For NZ’s Sake’. This is her first exhibition at the Little River Gallery, Canterbury. As a stylist, Church has been engaged by many of New Zealand’s leading interiors magazines. She has worked on spreads for NZ House & Garden, Your home & Garden and Life & Leisure . She has also lent her eye to advertising campaigns and catalogues for the likes of Trelise Cooper, Citta Design and Warwick Fabrics. For many years Church has lived on Waiheke Island in a gorgeous home with her husband Nick and their two children Molly and Thomas.
