With the schools currently operating out of three sites – the Lyttelton West site and the two Lyttelton Main sites (one being that of the former Catholic School, St Joseph’s) – some parents were afraid that with the merger their children would be on different sites, but that wouldn’t be the case. There would be a new school, with a new name and new administration, but until the new school was built on the Lyttelton Main site, the two separate schools would continue to exist, the principals said. Donated books boost library’s stock Lyttelton principals accept merger

REDCLIFFS resident and science writer Vicki Hyde has played a role in boosting the book collection at Redcliffs Library. Mrs Hyde asked her publisher, New Holland Publishers, if they could donate some non-fiction works, as she knew the volunteer library was struggling to keep up with book purchases while fundraising to replace its building. “New Holland were kind enough to send down two boxes of books, and a couple of other publishers, David Bateman and Allen & Unwin, followed suit. It was great to be able to take them into the librarians’ meeting and see the excitement as they were unpacked,” Mrs Hyde said. The donation of more than 100 books ranged from children’s board books to new fiction, natural history works and self-help advice publications. The book Historic Canterbury brought an emotional reaction from the librarians, with its images of now-lost buildings. Many of the volunteer librarians have worked on despite earthquake damage to their own houses. “We were just blown away by the publishers’

generosity. We lost so many books because of the quakes and having to shift from site to site; it’s been really wonderful to have new books to issue to our keen readers,” library committee president Jan McLauchlan said. The Redcliffs Public Library Inc. is raising funds to establish a new combined library and community base on the former site on Main Road. “Previously, we’ve had an annual budget of under $10,000, almost all of which was spent on books – it’s a big ask to raise the $250,000 we need to get back to where we were before the quakes,” Mrs McLauchlan said. The library is to have a sale of older and donated books on March 23 and 24, from their current location at the tennis club, 75 Main Rd, and they have a regular stand at the Mt Pleasant Farmers’ Market every Saturday. The merger process will kick off with the Education Minister’s appointment of a sevenmember establishment board of trustees comprising representatives from both schools, early in the third term. The establishment board would be in place for three months, after which a new board of trustees would be elected. “One of the first things the establishment board will do is appoint a principal,” Mrs Feary said. “There will be a huge workload for this board, but I think there is an awareness [of this] by the Ministry.” During the three months there would be a number of meetings with Ministry representatives, she said, giving the board the opportunity to ask questions, have their questions answered and get more information. “The Ministry has told us this is how democracy works.” The new principal, new staff, and the new school charter will be in place on January 28, 2014 for the start of the new school year. Ms Walls and Mrs Feary said their submission to the Ministry included some innovative

ideas for the merger, and ways of making the transition really smooth. The Education Minister was looking for innovation from schools and different approaches, they said, and they hoped their ideas would be viewed favourably. The damage to both schools from the earthquakes meant that repair or rebuilding would have been necessary, and with the new school to be built on the Lyttelton Main site, the two principals had no concerns about the building process. “The Ministry is very good at managing building – they’ve been doing it for years. There will be some inconvenience, but they are very professional and highly organised,” Mrs Feary said. “While some people may have worries about safety issues, for me it is not an issue.” With the merging of the two schools creating a larger school roll, the purchase of land adjacent to the Lyttelton Main site was also being discussed. Ms Walls and Mrs Feary acknowledged there would be a bumpy road ahead, but were confident a positive outcome would be achieved. “It’s going to be good,” Ms Wells said.

FOR Redcliffs people still having post-quake issues, a visit over recent days from volunteers offering information, a listening ear and even hugs where required, has been welcomed. The volunteers are members of the Christchurch Community Response team. Based at St Andrew’s church in Main Road, they have been door knocking in Redcliffs to check on how people are coping after the earthquakes, and to let them know what help and information is available to them locally, and what financial assistance they may be entitled to. The visits were made on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week, and are being made on the same days this week – with a total of 1160 Redcliffs homes being visited over six days. Information has been left in the letter box if people weren’t home. The door-knocking concept evolved from a partnership formed two weeks after the February 2011 earthquake between six Christchurch churches, including St Christopher’s in Avonhead, and St Christopher’s sister church in Blockhouse Bay, Auckland, response team coordinator Janette Sprott said. “After the earthquake we went out into the community to help, and after two weeks we found door-knocking to be the most effective way of connecting with people.” Volunteer Jo Smith said there had not been “one negative response” from Redcliffs residents they had visited. “They said it was so good that they weren’t forgotten,” she said. Some people were having issues with EQC and insurance; others were frustrated that nothing was happening with their home repairs, while

some just wanted someone to talk to. People could be assigned a case worker if necessary, Mrs Smith said. About 10 per cent of people visited wanted information or help from the volunteers. Prior to coming to Redcliffs, Christchurch Community Response volunteers had door-

knocked at more than 14,000 homes across the city, Mrs Sprott said. The door knocking will continue in other suburbs, with Papanui due to be visited in May and Avonhead in June. She didn’t know when their door-knocking across the city would be completed, but said they didn’t go anywhere they weren’t invited.

Trust seeks information on missing boat A BOAT owned by the Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust has gone missing from Lyttelton. The Quail 1, a 5.2-metre Stabicraft 525 was discovered missing at 8.30am on March 4, when it was due to take part-time employees across to Quail Island for work. The boat has a 70hp Johnson outboard, and the watercraft trailer registration number is K732F. It was stored on its trailer at Naval Point Yacht Club in Lyttelton Harbour. “It is presumed that both boat and trailer were stolen in the early hours of Sunday morning -

as that is when the barrier arm to the car park was broken,” trust chairman, Ian McLennan said. The boat is used to transport part-time workers to the island each week, where they carry out a range of tasks including predator trapping, clearing of alien vegetation and planting of indigenous plant species on the island. The trust is appealing to the public for information and leads that might help to find the boat as without it the group’s ability to work on the island is limited, and costs are increased unnecessarily, Mr McLennan said.

Heathcote Valley School shaves heads for charity Charity shaves: Five teachers and one pupil at Heathcote Valley School recently had their hair shaved for the Shave for a Cure fundraiser, a cause that supports the families of blood cancer and leukaemia sufferers. The children that donated the most were able to cut their teacher’s hair. ST Luke’s Anglican Church in Little Akaloa is to receive up to $33,860 from the Christchurch City Council’s Heritage Incentive Grant Fund. The building, which is owned by Anglican Church Property Trustees, was damaged in the recent earthquakes and is currently being repaired and upgraded with the addition of new structural steel. The fund can be used for maintenance and seismic upgrade work for the church, which is listed as a Protected Building in the Banks Peninsula District Plan and a Category 1 building by New Zealand Historic Places Trust. The building Christchurch City Council natural environment and heritage manager Helen Beaumont said the council recognised the need to invest in heritage buildings like St Luke’s.

“This grant will help to ensure St Luke’s future, its protection and continued use once earthquake repairs and upgrading have been completed. The building is very much a part of the identity of Little Akaloa’s community and the council is pleased to be able to provide funding towards a project where the building is largely in its original condition.” The payment of the grant is subject to the applicants entering a 10-year Limited Conservation Covenant with the council to further protect the building. The Vicar of St Luke’s, the Reverend John Major, said the people of Little Akaloa as well as visitors who holiday and travel through the area saw St Luke’s as an important focal point in the community.

“The generosity of the council’s Heritage Incentive Grant is deeply appreciated and it encourages the community of Little Akaloa in its commitment to restore and maintain their unique church and its ministry into the future. Through this grant we are able to remember the past, give life to the current community and look to the future.” The church was constructed in 1905-06, with local farmer and self-taught carver John Henry Menzies largely responsible for the building’s design, construction, decoration and raising the financing. The building’s design, which blends European neo-gothic with internal Māori style decorative patterns and motifs, is considered unusual. Other designers did not take this approach until the interwar period.

SEA Cadets from across the South Island competed at the Southern Area Regatta, held at the Training Ship Steadfast in Cass Bay over the weekend. The event was previously competed for at a different unit each year, but has been held at T.S. Steadfast’s weekend base at Cass Bay for the

last few years. The male and female cadets compete in teams of eight cadets and one officer. They undertake a series of evolutions: sailing, rigging a boat, pulling (rowing), drill, first aid, knot work, erecting a flag pole, shooting and general knowledge.

Training Ship Talisman from Nelson won the over-all regatta by three points over Training Ship Cornwell and T.S. Steadfast, who were third equal. T.S. Talisman will head off to Auckland next weekend to compete in the national competition against the Northern and Central winners.

GOVERNORS Bay School continues to go from strength to strength with exciting teaching and learning programmes, stunning students, amazing staff, a fantastic board, dynamic PTA, lovely parents, a growing roll, a lovely view and continual improvements to our learning environment. Last week we received a letter from the Ministry of Education thanking us for the work that had gone into our charter, which is the guiding document for the school. The strategic goals in it are the result of work by the board and staff with input from the community as well. Thanks to a generous grant from Holcim New Zealand Limited we are able to replace our shelving in the library and also purchase some new books. Grants like these are always most appreciated and allow us to undertake projects we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. As part of our continuous development to keep us in line with 21st-century learning we are also changing classroom furniture to facilitate more choice for our students. Where they are best to work will depend on what they are doing, the tools they are using and with whom they are collaborating. Introducing this choice of workspace gives the

children another opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning, which is of paramount importance these days. These purchases are made possible through prudent financial savings made over a number of years by the board of trustees. Of course, if there was a business out there that was willing to support us with further grants, these are always welcomed. Our garden continues to provide great interest both in the planting, tending and cultivating of the plants and of course in the eating of the wonderful fare produced. We are very fortunate to have Jacqueline Newbound working with us this year. She is the harbour basin school food garden facilitator and after meeting with her I am

excited about the ideas and enthusiasm she brings and I know she is going to be a real asset to the schools in the harbour basin. We continue to have a number of groups making use of our facilities and we welcome inquiries from any others wishing to do so. Of course, if you just want to come and play in the grounds, make yourself at home. In particular, if you have preschool children and need to get out of the house then you are most welcome to use our grounds, browse through our library and borrow any books that take your fancy. Maffeys Road retaining wall, McCormacks Bay Maffeys Road retaining wall work is important locally and also as part of the wider work to rebuild the main road/ causeway to Redcliffs.

It has to be completed before work can start on the causeway, as traffic may need to be redirected around McCormacks Bay Road. Maffeys Road work is likely to run until the second week of May. SCIRT delivery team City Care has finished installing 18 kingposts and 104 concrete panels will form the next stage with 75 ground anchors securing this sizeable retaining wall in place.

Rangatira Terrace, Mount Pleasant Work on the rock face above the old quarry and reservoir began early in March by SCIRT delivery team Downer. It will continue to October. Rock anchors (steel pins encased in grout) will run under the road. A concrete slab will restore the road’s width and a new pedestrian/ traffic barrier will be built along the edge, replacing the old wall. Rangatira Terrace between Seamount Terrace and Quarry Road is downhill only from 18 March.

Christine de Felice AN exhibition of original artworks by 13 of New Zealand’s leading artists is on display at Sumner’s LEstrange Gallery. The exhibition is to provide support for the suburb’s ContainerART project, where some of their works are also displayed. These artists were carefully selected to show their art on the container wall that stretches along Main Road in front of Peacock’s Gallop, gallery director Bryan LEstrange said. “The artists have banded together to create a group exhibition at LEstrange Gallery and proceeds from sales of the works will go towards funding the container project.” Artists represented in the exhibition include Tony Delautour, Tony Cribb, Nigel Brown, Simon Kaan, Ewan McDougall, Bryan LEstrange and Hamish Allan. Mr LEstrange hopes the exhibition will draw people to Sumner and help dispel any fears they may have about visiting the seaside suburb again. The container artworks have been attracting attention from local residents and visitors since the exhibition was launched in September 2011 – not all of it welcome. “One of the works by artist Kees Bruin was stolen, but then, fortunately it was returned to the gallery in perfect condition, and it will be put back on the container,” Mr LEstrange said.

THE capital campaign for Cholmondeley was launched with a garden party on March 10. Held in the grounds of Ohinatahi, the event began the appeal to raise the $4,000,000 required for the rebuild of the facility. Cholmondeley has helped 25,500 children in need, since opening in 1925. THE Heathcote community has been celebrating, following new hope being offered for their community library. The library has been closed since sustaining significant damage in the February 2011 quake, and after much uncertainty, was issued with a demolition order earlier this month. However, soon after this order, issues relating to the process followed by the council and Cera that led to the demolition order, were discovered. The community responded by holding a ‘sit in and read’ protest where about 70 residents gathered at the library armed with deckchairs and books, surrounded the library and read for an hour to “protest” against the building being pulled down. Following this, representatives from the Community Library Committee, Felicity Backhouse and Dorothy Burrows, along with Sara Templeton, chair of the Heathcote Valley Community Association, met with council representatives to discuss these concerns. to once again being able to walk to their local library, grab a book and catch up on local news. Heathcote Valley School students will again be able to go on their regular class trips to the library, which will be a treat since the school library is badly damaged and is currently in a small pre-fab building. Heathcote Valley Pre-school will bring its young charges down again, and the new residents at the Maltworks’ Villas, currently under development, will find a space in which to connect with their wider community.

HUNDREDS of people gathered to symbolically farewell Christchurch’s iconic and much-loved visitors, the bar-tailed godwits (kuaka), before they embark on their epic journey back to Alaska. These champion longdistance flying birds were seen off with a brief and informative ceremony at the Southshore Spit on Sunday, March 10, at 4pm. The godwit makes the longest non-stop flight known for any bird and also the longest journey without pausing to feed by any animal – more than 11,000kms along a route from Alaska to Christchurch. After resting up and filling out under the protection of the Christchurch City Council park rangers and bird lovers in Christchurch, the birds are ready to return to their Alaskan breeding grounds.

This unique and very special event, now in its 13th year, is organised by the Christchurch City Council, its Regional Park Rangers team, the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust and the Ornithological Society. While we have had the symbolic ceremony to farewell them, the birds are leaving over the next few weeks. As the godwits need to rest and feed in preparation for the long journey back, please avoid these birds should you be walking near their roosting area leading up to their departure. And please remember to keep dogs on the lead! MOUNT Pleasant Farmers Market continues to expand and grow as we move into autumn. Open every Saturday from 9.30am to 12.30pm, the local nature and community spirit of the market creates its unique character and style. In addition to all our usual food and produce, we actively strive to support locals with a variety of endeavours. These include Redcliffs Library, which awaits relocation, students busking, local school students from Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’ selling goods such as cards, coffee and afghans to raise funds to travel overseas to Europe and Asia. We also have numerous students from Linwood College working on the market, earning savings for trips to national tournaments, etc. Last, but by no means least, we regularly support the Mt Pleasant Pottery Group, who regularly have available wonderful hand-thrown and created pottery. Connecting people is information hub’s aim

Christine de Felice THE Sumner Information Hub has been set up to provide residents with information and help them through any EQC issues they may have with getting their homes repaired, community development co-ordinator Marnie Kent says. “It’s about connecting people with the services that are available.” However, Ms Kent wants to expand on that by facilitating other community activities in Sumner. Helping the elderly is one facet of community support she would be keen to develop, and she would like to see young people, or anyone with some spare time,

playing a role in that. “But first we need to find out if there is a need for help for the elderly, if people will respond to that need, and what kind of things the elderly may need help with, what jobs they want done.” With any community being made up of leaders and followers, Ms Kent said right now, Sumner needed more leaders, people who wanted to help make Sumner a good place. “In a nutshell, we are needing more volunteers to come forward to ask what they can do for our community.”

City ‘doesn’t need a flower show’ Islay McLeod

GARDENING is therapeutic. Getting your hands dirty seems to wear the worries away and there’s the smiley satisfaction of seeing the soil well cared for, and anticipating what those bulbs will bring in spring, the eventual vege harvest, the spreading shrub. All good. And so it was at the Hagley Ferrymead Community Board’s hosting of the annual Garden Pride Awards ceremony last week. Christchurch is only the “garden city” because gardeners, like the certificate recipients, keep it so. And that hasn’t been easy over the past two years. At the end of the function, I requested applause for the Christchurch City Council’s Water and Waste team who, seemingly miraculously, keep the water going, and beneath the sunburnt hills all is green. Except the Ellerslie Flower Show, apparently. I’ve never been, on my personal principle that the garden city doesn’t need a flower show. We are one. And force-feeding a floral event into

the city at the wrong time of the year might work for the tourism industry, but I’m an oldfashioned girl/gardener who wants to see and smell the blooms the name implies. Running a garden show when Christchurch is at its most resplendent means spring, but that clashes with Cup and Show Week. So what’s wrong with Labour Weekend? That’s the traditional get-stuck-into-the-garden time and if we could get inspired and buy the doings on the spot, I’d be all for it. New members sought for golf club DUE to dwindling membership, the longestablished Richmond Hill Ferrymead Golf Club is looking for new members. As with all golf clubs in Canterbury, club president Terry Thin said, since the February 22, 2011 earthquake people have understandably lost interest in golf because of damage to their homes and properties, and in some cases to their health. However, he believed the situation was improving. “After two years things are slowly getting back to normal, with some houses being restored and others being given a timeframe. “We are hoping to get membership up, which at present is 18 playing members,” Mr Thin said. “Richmond Hill Ferrymead has a unique golf course with great views of the Port Hills and the Heathcote River. It also has a driving range, a miniature golf course, practice putting green and a paintball complex. The club house has a sports shop selling everything the golfer needs. There is also a bar and restaurant and a

large function area. “We would eventually like to start playing for our many trophies, probably on Saturdays, but in the meantime we would like to get our 9.30am Wednesday matches underway for the men and Friday matches for the girls. “I am positive that in time these things will happen as Christchurch starts recovering and regrowing. We will get brochures in the club house explaining how to join.” The Richmond Hill Ferrymead Golf Club was established on Richmond Hill in Sumner in 1910. “I think it is the third-oldest club in Christchurch. A lot of Christchurch’s great golfers are on the honours board and many shifted to Shirley Golf Club after they started,” Mr Thin said. “I joined in 1951, with about 30 members teeing off on a Saturday. This rose to 200 members. We played in the Banks Peninsula competition. We were also known as the best social club in New Zealand. The green itself is all it was expected to be, maybe more. While it is slightly slower than the traditional Christchurch greens, True Draw produced a surface that is really true and has been heralded by some of our international bowlers as world-class. The Canterbury team trained on the green before winning the New Zealand provincial tournament in Auckland, where all-weather greens are more widespread. The club has been prominent in interclub events and special mention should go to Annabelle Walmisley for her third-equal place in the Canterbury Junior Ladies Singles, and Sue Lloyd for her third-equal place in the Canterbury Champion of Champion novice ladies singles. The men’s sevens team won their section of division 2 interclub and go forward to playoffs for the overall winner. The men’s eights team was runner-up in their section. Next month, the club will host firstly the ladies’ invitation triples tournament, followed, a fortnight later, by the men’s invitation triples tournament. Both these tournaments attract the cream of Canterbury’s bowlers with the occasional out-of-town celebrity. The club is inviting social membership at $5 per year, which entitles use of the clubhouse facility including a bar with some of the friendliest prices in Canterbury. There is also a new category of membership that caters for members of other clubs to join for the winter months. The fee will be $50, subject to approval at the AGM. Dreaming of Alaska… With House of Travel Ferrymead

Explore the Alaska less travelled with a small ship experience, spending more time in those rare, authentic places with extraordinary scenic qualities, historical significance and abundant wildlife. Well imagine no longer! I was lucky enough to experience all this and more on a recent trip to amazing Alaska! My Alaskan Dream adventure started in Sitka. This remote town has a fascinating history combining the native Tlingit culture with Russian sealers and then the Americans. Today it is a fishing town and home base to Alaskan Dream Cruises. Our guide collected us from our hotel and took us on a tour of the town before boarding a speed boat to go out wildlife spotting for the day. On this one afternoon we saw Orca, humpback & grey whales, bears, puffins, sea otters, seals, eagles and so much more! That evening we joined our ship. The boutique Admiralty Dream. - carrying just 66 passengers ships this size allow you to get much closer to the wildlife and glaciers, and you feel part of an Alaskan family. We were greeted with pre-dinner drinks in the bar and sampled some of the delicious appetisers on offer. Followed by dinner prepared by the extremely talented chef and accompanied by a complimentary glass of wine. It is open seated dining and you can choose to sit either on your own or at a table with some of the other guests. The evenings are spent back in the bar with a presentation about some of the natural history or culture that you have experienced and a discussion about what will happen the following day. You can visit the bridge any time and chat with the captain. They even let us steer the ship! All activities are included. We had tours of tiny fishing villages getting to meet the locals and learn about their way of life. We also went walking in the bush spotting wildlife, had the most amazing sea kayaking tour of spectacular Hobart Bay, got to see a small bear sitting on the beach & even went 4-wheel driving in the mountains taking in the beautiful views. My most favourite day was visiting the spectacular Tracy Arm and the North and South Sawyer Glaciers. Words and pictures cannot describe the beauty of this place. You must go and see it for yourself!
