LAST Tuesday’s public drop-in sessions concerning the new Ferrymead Bridge showed some “positive engagement”, the Christchurch City Council’s unit manager transport and greenspace John Mackie says. People were reasonably positive and the sessions gave them the opportunity to ask the experts about the effects of the bridge construction, Mr Mackie said. Most of the interest expressed by local residents concerned the disruption to traffic flow, how long the work would go on for and what the piling vibrations would be like. “People wondered if the vibrations would be like aftershocks, but they won’t be anything like the aftershocks we’ve experienced, it will be more like when heavy trucks pass by,” Mr Mackie said. To provide access to the suburbs east of the bridge while the new one

is being constructed, the contractors, HEB Construction Ltd, have built two temporary, one-way bridges, one going towards the city and the other towards Redcliffs and Sumner. “An interesting dynamic has emerged,” Mr Mackie said. “Locals had got to know the contracting staff before the September 2010 earthquake, when work on the bridge had started. The contractors have been engaging with the community and when the second temporary bridge was completed, people passing by gave positive feedback to the contractors, and showed them they were very pleased with the progress.” Continued on page 2

YUM: It was party time for a group of children from the three Sumner primary schools when they celebrated the last day of their week-long holiday programme at Fuse in Sumner on January 25. The programme was organised by the Shoreline Youth Trust, and included a wide range of activities, from day trips, to canoeing on the Avon, lunch at the Gardens, mini-golf and a movie. Mia George from Our Lady Star of the Sea enjoyed the week, especially the pottery painting. Her schoolmate Aaron Smith enjoyed the movie, Wreck it Ralph. Organiser Ben Davis said the programme had been a great success and was attended by about 15 children. It was the first time they had been back in the Fuse building since it had reopened, he said.

Harland said the NZTA had always recognised the significance of the bridge and had committed to providing more than half the cost of upgrading the bridge before the earthquakes occurred. “Following the February 2011 earthquake and the need to rebuild the damaged bridge, the NZTA increased its funding to more than $22 million,” Mr Harland said. This would ensure residents had a new bridge that was 100 per cent of the new building code and would provide an improved certainty of continued access if there was another significant event. Mr Harland said the new bridge would also help support better passenger transport links to the eastern hill suburbs, with the additional bridge capacity enabling the implementation of Bus Priority on the Sumner route and improvements to both cyclist and pedestrian safety in the area. “If anyone has questions they can go to the council website, which will be continually updated. The next stage in the project will be the demolition of the old bridge, using a type of crane called a ‘nibbler’. This will take about three months, Mr Mackie said. Following that there will be 15 months of pile driving. This will involve driving 10 piles with a diameter ranging from 1.1 metres to 2,4 metres into the riverbed. The piles will be driven about 20 metres through sand and mud, then a further five to eight metres into bedrock. “This will be a long exercise, and there will be noise and there will be vibration,” Mr Mackie warned. In a bid to minimise the inconvenience to local residents, Mr Mackie said the hours of drilling operation would be restricted to 7am to 6pm weekdays and 7am to noon on Saturdays, and there wouldn’t be any drilling done on Sundays. “Over the first two years there will be continual disruption, but it is hoped that there will be more limited disruption as the work progresses.” The bridge is being built to the latest engineering standards at a cost of $34.87 million, with $22.12 million being provided by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). Rescued plants to feature in Ellerslie entry SUMNER landscape designer, stone mason and self-confessed “garden nerd” Scotty Fletcher has come up with an innovative idea for his entry in this year’s Ellerslie Flower Show – using plants from red-zoned gardens. “It started when (neighbour) Lesley Murdoch asked me how to take a cutting from a rose she wanted to keep from her garden in Heberden Avenue. She had moved after her house was red-zoned because a huge rock had fallen on it. “I told her I could remove the whole rose for her, and in the end I removed about 20 roses. Instead of payment, I asked if I could have the whole garden, and she agreed. “After viewing many of my friends’ red-zone homes and gardens around the community, and seeing their faces as they talked about their memories of watching their kids playing in the garden and seeing the smiles on their faces, it dawned on me that these people needed as much help with this as possible. The next thing I know I’m bringing in plant after plant after plant into my house for storage.” The plants were removed before the properties were taken over by Cera, Mr Fletcher said, and he got the OK from the demolition companies before entering the red-zoned properties. Although he went in at his own risk, he “would risk everything for a beautiful plant”. If he hadn’t removed the plants, they would probably have died by now, or been taken to dump sites, Mr Fletcher said. His own garden, dubbed the ‘plant orphanage’, is now filled with plants in pots ready for re-homing into their owners’ new properties, where he will

redesign their gardens. In the interim, they will be incorporated into his Ellerslie Flower Show display, called ‘Floating in Transition’, which incorporates plants and water. “I’m using three large mussel buoys to make a floating garden and two floating seats. Delays at major intersection ROAD users who normally go past Eastgate Shopping Centre on Linwood Avenue are advised to leave early for work and take a different route. The intersection is closed to through traffic along Linwood Avenue for two weeks. SCIRT delivery team Downer began trenching across Linwood Avenue at the Aldwins/Buckleys Road intersection on Monday. “The crews are installing the Pressure Main 11 wastewater pipeline, essential for the city’s rebuild and carrying 30 per cent of the city’s total wastewater,” SCIRT general manager Duncan Gibb said. “The closure to through traffic is unavoidable for a short period, and the crews will be doing their best to get the

work done as safely and efficiently as possible. However, there will be significant disruption and flow-on effects for traffic.” The intersection has been narrowed in recent weeks along Linwood Avenue in preparation for this closure and signage is advertising the change at key places. • Drivers on either side of the intersection on Linwood Avenue will be detoured onto Aldwins and Buckleys roads. • Buckleys and Aldwins Road drivers will be able to cross the intersection, slowly. • Alternative routes through the area, for example Ferry Road, will also be busy so it is advisable to build in extra time to your journey at peak periods. • Pedestrian crossings have been relocated.

ABOUT 300 Cantabrians got a close-up look at the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior III week on its first visit to Lyttelton recently. The motor-assisted sailing yacht, which replaced Rainbow Warrior II in October 2011, spent a weekend in Lyttelton’s dry dock for maintenance work. Before that, members of the public were transported to the ship, which was moored at Camp Bay, where they were given a tour and met crew members. Her destination after Lyttelton, and a brief stop in Bluff, was to be the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands. She will make a final stop in Wellington around February 10 before moving on to the Asian leg of her world tour. Greenpeace campaign director Carmen Gravatt said the focus of the New Zealand leg was on drawing attention to our natural environment and the threat posed by offshore drilling for oil and gas. “The Auckland Islands are a bit of a jewel in the crown of New Zealand but it is largely kind of forgotten, people don’t realise quite how amazing the wildlife is

there and it’s at risk from a whole lot of things.” The ship’s schedule had to be amended because of the dry dock stay, with visits to Dunedin and Stewart Island abandoned and a reduced stay in Bluff. Ship’s captain Joel Stewart, who had worked for Greenpeace since 1989, was serving for the third time on the new vessel. She was a joy to sail, he said. “It really is a high-performance sailing vessel. We’re not going to win the America’s Cup in it but for a ship this size with a high freeboard it sails very well.” Volunteer deckhand and watchkeeper Amanda Eklend, 21, was enjoying her second stint on the Rainbow Warrior. Summertime around Lyttelton Harbour Wendy Everingham

WHAT a fantastic summer. Locals and visitors are enjoying a superb outdoor time. Whether it’s catching the ferry to Quail Island or Diamond Harbour, camping at Orton Bradley, taking a drive around the bays or just walking around and taking in the sights, it feels great to be able to be out and about in this beautiful harbour of ours. This summer Diamond Harbour is one of the places to be, with ‘Live at the Point’ every Sunday, 1pm to 4pm, until February 24. Tiny Lies and friends perform on February 10, Devilish Mary on February 17 and the Black Velvet Band finish the series on February 24. ‘Sculpture at the Point’ is on every day until February 24. Take

a self-guided leisurely stroll from the ferry to the domain and you’ll see five very interesting sculptures. All these great initiatives have been created by a team of talented locals under the umbrella of the community organisation SPRIG. If it’s exercise you are seeking, another option is to hop on your bike, take the bus through the tunnel and then catch the ferry over to Diamond Harbour. Depending on your level of confidence you can have a quick ride around to Purau or head in the other direction and cycle right around the bays returning to Lyttelton. For those keen on water-based activities there is a series of stand-

up paddle, ocean swim and running events at Corsair Bay organised by Surf n Turf events. They are generally on a Wednesday evening and registration is from 5.30pm. See www. surfnturf.co.nz for more information. The Christchurch City Council also sponsors Kayak Fun at Corsair Bay on weekends until February17. Cost is just $5 and it runs from 11am to 5pm. A very lovely summer at Mt Pleasant Jocelyn Papprill

IT’S been a lovely Mt Pleasant summer so far with lots more warm days predicted and summertime fun planned. The area is presently dotted with colourful sunflowers planted on road verges thanks to the fun initiative of the children from Mt Pleasant School, who delivered seeds to just about every household last year. In vacant lots wild flowers add vibrancy to an otherwise sad gap. It is, however, heart-warming to see rebuilding occurring on the hill and we hope to see some completed by April or May of this year. Concept plans for the rebuild of the Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre are coming along and will be on display in late February to early March for community feedback. Thinking of feedback, I would like to encourage residents to have their say on the draft Ferry Road Master Plan, which is currently open for submissions. It is worth reading and considering seriously, as how Ferry Rd is designed and developed will affect all of us who travel along it. Many of the concepts, draft designs and visuals indicate the areas along the way could be enhanced by improvements that would make them more attractive, safer and better for both community and business interactions. There are two dropin sessions on February 11 and 19 – further information can be found on the city council’s website. Some people managed to get along to the information session on the Ferrymead Bridge replacement and approach works on Tuesday, January 29. It certainly is a very involved

project and those of us living on the hill and coastal side of it recognise its importance. We’re also getting used to the ever-changing cones, road markings and noisy machinery (can anyone really get used to that noise!). Roll on 2015 when the project should be completed. I’ve had fun playing Quakes and Ladders with various visitors over the holiday season; they’ve been baffled by the terms and acronyms we Cantabrians are familiar with and shake their heads in dismay when they hit another barrier and have to go down the fault line. If you haven’t bought a copy of the game for yourself, it is available for purchase at the Mt Pleasant Community centre or online at www. quakesandladders.co.nz/. The big event on our summer calendar is the Pleasant Day Out – 24 hours of fun over the weekend of February 16 to 17, jointly hosted by the Residents’ Association and the Mt Pleasant School. There will be food stalls and live music from noon on Saturday until 11pm, with those camping at the school continuing to enjoy time with friends and family until the big breakfast from 8am on Sunday. A variety of family fun activities continues Sunday morning until pack-up time at noon, including story-time, tug-o-war and a Frisbee competition. Entry fee is $5 per family or $2 per individual. An extract from the publication Exploring and Estuary: A Field Guide to the Avon-Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai

HOME to many birds, the Linwood Paddocks act as a critical buffer between suburban Christchurch and the estuary shoreline. One of the first feeding grounds to appear at low tide, Sandy Point also offers bird watchers the chance to spot some rare migrant wading birds. Linwood Paddocks – the creation of a ‘Sewage Farm’ In the 1880s the farmland between the wastewater treatment plant and the estuary received regular applications of treated wastewater. Sections of the lower Linwood Paddocks [west of the windsurfing area] also received twice-weekly applications of thickened biosolids. Aiming to enrich the sandy soil, this method would build up enough organic matter to grow pasture for around five years before the process would need to be repeated. The last application of biosolids was in 1977. Dairy cows were initially run on the pasture, providing a milk supply for the city, but in the 1960s farming changed to the DRYCLEANERS & LAUNDERERS current cattle fattening for beef. Birdlife of the paddocks Gaze across the Linwood Paddocks at any time of year and you will see pukeko and spur-winged plover – the permanent feathered residents of these paddocks. In winter they are joined by hundreds of other birds, wandering amongst the cattle and feeding on the plants, snails and insects in the wet paddocks. Yacht club to host two renowned musicians FOLLOWING her return from the United States, musician Jackie Bristow will be performing in Lyttelton next month as part of her 18-date summer tour of New Zealand. Bristow left her hometown of Gore two years ago with a dream of making her way as an international touring and recording artist. Her journey has taken her across the globe, and more recently she has been living and touring in the United States. Bristow has opened for a raft of international stars including Tommy Emmanuel, Marc Cohn, John Oates, John Waite, Bettye LaVette, BJ Thomas, Joe Ely, Marcia Ball, Charlie Robison, Rick Springfield, Bob Schneider, Jimmy LaFave, Euge Groove, Ruthie Foster and Howard Jones. Last summer Bristow packed her belongings into her car and embarked on a three-month US road trip, crossing Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, southern and northern California before returning to the plains of West Texas and on to Austin. Despite her hectic touring schedules, Bristow found time to write and record her new album. In November 2012 she joined acclaimed producer/drummerBrady Blade(Blade Studios) in Louisiana and laid down the tracks for her fourth album, which is due for release mid2013. A legacy for family and film buffs THE Christchurch movie scene suffered a serious blow recently with the death of Rodney Cook. The well-known and highly respected theatre owner had been the mainstay of art-house film in Christchurch for many years, and operated two theatre complexes in the city until they were put out of business following the 2011 earthquakes. Christine de Felice talks to his sons, Darren and Glenn, and son-in-law Charlie Loughnan about Rodney’s life, his extraordinary passion for film and what made him successful.

BORN in Bristol, in the United Kingdom, Rodney Cook came to New Zealand with his family at the age of 14. A short time later, after leaving school he took up an apprenticeship as a shoe designer, and went on to become highly successful in the field. His life in the world of cinema began when he started working for Laing Masters, owner of the Hollywood Theatre in Sumner, and went on to manage the Academy and Cloisters theatres in the Arts Centre, also owned by Mr Masters. When the shoe manufacturing company he was working for went into receivership, Rodnes took the opportunity to develop his love of art-house films by purchasing the theatres in 1996. “Dad sourced all the art-house films. He had a knack of picking the right films that did well for the business,” Darren says. “It was a great gift of Dad’s.” One film that proved particularly successful was Gloomy Sunday. It had not been well-received in Budapest, Hungary, where it was filmed, or in other European countries, but on previewing it, Rodney felt it was worth bringing here, Darren says. It went on to become the longest-running film in New Zealand, screening for 11 years, and was still being screened at the time of the September earthquake. “Neil Struthers, who conducted Dad’s funeral service, said at the service that the film, which was a bit naughty, had been recommended to him and it had ‘opened up a whole world to Neil’,” Darren says. While Rodney sourced the films, his wife Annette played a key role in running the administration side of the business, and for the first few years the couple worked at the theatre 364 days a year. “They would be there for the first screening at 11am in the morning and didn’t leave until after the last one had finished at night. That would be around 11pm. They did that to make the business successful,” Darren says. Rodney also wrote the ‘blurb’ for the films when they were advertised. “And he always gave them five stars,” Charlie says.

“He was very selective, very picky about the films. They were gentle films, with the core audience being in the 35-plus age group. They featured actors like Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Kristin Scott-Thomas and Bill Nighy.” In 2008, Rodney opened the Metro Gold three-theatre complex in Worcester Street. “He had spent a long time designing it and it took a year to build. It was modelled on the old picture palace theatres in England,” Charlie says. Sadly, the Christchurch earthquakes spelt the end of Rodney, Annette and the family’s theatres, a loss which devastated him, Darren says. “Showing movies had been his passion and his love and he had spent years building up the business. The quakes were very hard on him and his health and forced him into retirement.” At the time of his death, Rodney and Annette were in the process of developing a new cinema complex at The Colombo shopping centre in Sydenham. The family is Rodney Cook going ahead with the project, with the opening scheduled for March 18. “Mum will be involved and we are all very excited about the future of this development. It will be known as the Academy Gold Cinema so people will recognise the name,” Darren says. “It will introduce a new era of art-house films in Christchurch and we will continue screening the same brand of films we were previously known for. We have an abundance of new films being released this year into Christchurch, which the public can feast their eyes on.” The complex will feature the very latest in sound and projection equipment and seating design. As they look forward to their new venture, Darren and Glenn say their father “created a wonderful family business” for them and their sister, Rebecca. “He had a dream and he’s set us all up and we want to see his legacy live on,” Glenn says. Charity auction highlight of anniversary celebrations A CHARITY art auction will be the highlight of the Sumner Longboarders Surf Club’s 20th anniversary celebrations during the weekend of March 1 to 3. The art auction is a repeat of an event held five years ago where all items, typically but not exclusively surf or Sumner related, are made, assembled and donated by the club members. All proceeds from sales will be donated to ‘Make-A-Wish New Zealand’ to recognise the great work they do in bringing joy and happiness to young children living with life threatening illnesses, club president Pete Mannix said. “We recently lost young Ruby Hollingworth, aged nine, from our club circle to a rare condition and wanted to assist by whatever practical means we could. Making the art auction a charity event was a no-brainer,” Mr Mannix said. “Having the generous support of key sponsors for the weekend Seventhwave, Mainland Paints, Surfing Tribe (on Facebook), Sadhana Surfboards, Aumoana Surf, The Headless Mexican restaurant and Signmark allows us to maximise our donation to this most deserving cause.” The celebrations commence on Friday, March 1, with a retro movie night at the Hollywood theatre, followed on Saturday, March 2, with the charity art auction and party night at the

Festivities wind up on Sunday on The Esplanade at Scarborough Beach with teams led by former club presidents competing in a tag team surf contest using oldstyle Malibu longboards. Longboarders by definition ride surfboards nine feet or longer. However, most members have a ‘quiver’ comprising multiple boards of different lengths and designs with the common theme being they all love riding the best board for the conditions. Scarborough Beach in Sumner is especially suited to the longer boards. Bays invites new players for 2013 Neil Murphy

FOR the 2013 season, Ferrymead Bays Football Club is aiming to build on its successes of 2012. Our premier men’s team won the Mainland Premier League, the English Cup, the South Island Championship and the Hurley Shield. We also ran a successful development league side, a Division 2 side and a number of Masters teams - on offer again this year. The future of our club is in our juniors. We have good numbers from First Kicks through Fun Football to teams in each grade from 9th to 13th/14ths. We are also building up our number of girls and aim to have teams in each of the girls’ 12th and 14th grades this year. In term 1 we are offering summer football for juniors. This is at Barnett Park on Mondays from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. Our senior club will again be having an evening of fun football on Wednesday, March 6, for all existing and any new members at Ferrymead Park, starting around 6.30pm. Our automatic payment forms will be available again. This allows members to pay their subs over four months if preferred. Our subs this season have been frozen at last season’s rate of $270. New members are welcome. Anybody thinking of playing this season drop by Ferrymead Park on the March 6.
