Shake-up for school run

How will the education proposals affect your children’s school run? Let us know: news@mainlandpress.co.nz Samantha early and Chelsea Shover

THE shake-up proposed for education in Christchurch may have implications for the daily school run. Traffic volumes around the city decrease noticeably in the school holidays and the term ‘chaos at the school gate’ has been widely used to describe the phenomenon of parents parking illegally or undertaking dangerous manoeuvres when dropping off or picking up children. Efforts to alleviate the problem include speed and stopping restrictions around schools. The education proposals for greater Christchurch following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes put forward this month by the Ministry of Education include closing 13 schools, merging 18, relocating seven and

combining five into a single year 1 to 13 campus in Aranui. Canterbury Primary Principals Association president John Bangma said there was concern about the distance some children would have to travel. “Do we then in a few years say we need to educate our children more because we’ve got even more problems with obesity because a lot of people can’t actually walk to school because it’s physically too far for them?” The Christchurch City Council offers a travel planning programme to help schools encourage students to cycle and walk. “The council will offer this programme to the schools that merge or relocate, to assist them

develop policies and projects that will enhance the ability of their pupils to travel safely and sustainably between home and school,” acting unit manager business support Jarrod Bates said. Mr Bates said until final decisions were made, the council was not able to assess the likely impact the changes may have on schoolrelated travel patterns. Central New Brighton School principal Toni Burnside said there were safety concerns about their children travelling the three kilometres to South New Brighton School, with which they are proposed to merge. “There will have to be a school bus run to pick up our children, our parents don’t have

cars, our children do walk to school, a lot of them have after-school activities across the road at the local church, will the bus bring them back there so that that can continue afterschool as well?” Avonhead School principal Charles Levings said his school was fortunate to have a long road frontage and reserve at the back, while many parents only used the car to drop off children on rainy days. He felt for schools with small entrance spaces. Banks Avenue School principal Murray Edlin said most sites proposed for them to relocate to were easier to access, though some were on busier roads. TODD anD his many lives… I’ll never forget the day I first met Todd. He very slowly ambled out to the treatment area where I was working, looking so tired, in a lot of discomfort and his eyes were pleading for help. He was such a gentleman, allowing us to prod at his tummy, roll him onto a table to radiograph him and hook him up to fluids without so much as a moan. He even licked my hand as I placed a catheter. I fell in love with his kind soul, gratefulness and faith immediately and I was determined we would help this dog today!

Progress on Woolston retail hub Going up: Chef Richard Till and The Tannery developer Alasdair Cassels show the new Victorian-style arches which were installed by crane in the atrium of a new retail and hospitality precinct in Woolston last Thursday. The boutique retail and dining development is under construction on the old Woolston Tannery site, corner of Garlands Road and Cumnor Terrace. The arches are nine metres high, six metres

Todd is a 12 year old male neutered Bearded Collie cross and he presented for continual vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and he was off his food for about 5 days. Refusing meals was very unlike Todd. The two findings of most concern were a fever of 40.7 and a large uneven abdominal mass. Steve admitted Todd and he was immediately hospitalized for intravenous fluids, radiographs of his abdomen and chest and blood testing. On xray, two huge abdominal masses were seen. Catherine also identified them on ultrasound as a large splenic mass and also there appeared to be a large mass wrapped around the small intestine. All the blood work was normal and no tumor spread was observed on chest xrays, so after much discussion it was decided we would operate and see if anything could be done for Todd.

I was excited and nervous not really knowing whether I was going to be able to make a difference for Todd. This was going to be a long surgery and a difficult anaesthetic for our nurses to monitor as Todd was septic, had low blood pressure and a rapid heart rate. Todd ended up being under anaesthetic for over 4 hours, having two nurses monitoring continuously while I was able to successfully remove his massive cancerous spleen and the large tumour invading his small intestine and cecum. The latter required a small to large bowel anastomosis, which carried with it risks and potential complications, but Todd’s owners decided he was worth fighting for. At first glance, I didn’t think it was possible to remove the intestinal mass but it’s amazing what perserverence, patience, taking a risk and a bit of luck can achieve. Plus I kept remembering my mental promise I had made to Todd that morning. Todd miraculously recovered from his long ordeal in surgery and was discharged 2-3 days later. He was an outstanding patient to care for and I really believed he thanked me for his second chance. His owners have since told me that on 22nd February 2011, Todd was buried alive under bricks and rubble when one side of their two storey home collapsed on his kennel and run. He was presumed dead and the following day Todd’s owners heard whimpering coming from a pile of bricks. Frantically he was dug out and amazingly suffered no real injuries. A true survivor. Three weeks on his wounds have healed beautifully but we are working on a diet to control his diarrhea and help maintain a healthy bodyweight. His body has suffered a huge insult but if any dog can recover fully it’s Todd. If Todd could speak I’m sure he’d say- Thanks Heaps! Dr Michele McMaster

Cardboard cathedral foundations laid

In progress: It has been a milestone week for the building of Christchurch’s new temporary Anglican Cathedral, called the Transitional Cathedral. Last Tuesday, September 18, 180 of the 320 six metre, 120 kg cardboard tubes, which will be used to build the structure, were delivered to the Naylor Love warehouse in Christchurch. On Monday the cathedral’s concrete foundations were poured on site at the south-east corner of Madras and Hereford streets. The Cathedral is estimated to cost about $5.3 million is expected to be completed by early 2013. Its steel frame is expected to be erected before Christmas.

Challenged to get moving

Out and about: Bupa Maidstone Hospital staff members Lynda Fleury, Joann Lasmarias and clinical manager Janice Marban, along with residents Margaret Whittle and Kathleen O’Donnell visited this private garden recently as part of Bupa’s 2012 global challenge: Walk to a Well World. Five homeowners in Althorpe Place, Hydepark, opened their gates for the Maidstone residents to visit their gardens, after being approached by hospital staff seeking permission for them to do so. Other Bupa facilities in Parklands and Ilam also took part in the global challenge, which will see thousands of Bupa employees from around the world joining together with their local communities during September to encourage more people to get together and enjoy the health benefits of walking.

DUST in the air will be a fact of life in Christchurch over the next few years as buildings are demolished and vacant sites are yet to be built on; however, authorities say a variety of measures in place should keep irritation to a minimum. Environment Canterbury (ECan) regional manager Resource Management Act monitoring and compliance Brett Aldridge said as Christchurch moved into the deconstruction and rebuilding phase, dust being blown from the cleared zones might increase over the spring and summer months, especially with the nor’west winds that sweep across the city. “While many dust-control measures are in place at these sites, the sheer size and number of the sites means realistically there will be dust – it is part of the environment in which we will be living in for the next few years,” he said. “People who may find they react to dusty conditions should consider taking extra precautions such as wearing masks.’’ The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera), Christchurch City Council and ECan are conducting monitoring across the city to ensure the impact of the dust is kept to a minimum. Dust can be produced during the demolition process, as a result of truck movements and

from vacant sites. Cera has a range of methods for reducing dust from demolition sites and truck movements, including requiring demolition companies to have a dust management plan. Dust from cleared sites is the responsibility of the owner to control. Generally, sites are compacted, and sprinklers and other watering methods are used. Department of Labour medical practitioner Dr Andrew Hilliard has written a paper which says, based on current available evidence, the risk of health effects from dust, contaminated silt, mould or fungi to residents and to workers involved in deconstruction and reconstruction of Christchurch was likely to be low. Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said although Canterbury had not seen an increase in respiratory problems since the earthquakes, it was still important for people to reduce their exposure to liquefaction dust wherever possible and seek medical advice if they felt unwell. “At this stage we have seen no cases of dust-related lung disease that we can attribute to liquefaction dust.” Have you been affected by post-earthquake dust? The battle continues AS daylight saving arrives on Sunday maybe it may help to refresh us and compel the powers to be to use the extra daylight hours to have a good look around and see what needs to be done. We are definitely a city of two halves and a city of haves or have nots. Wherever you sit on any of the compounding issues we face, it has the potential to divide this city and continue to portray us as moaners and ungrateful. Wherever you sit on the conundrum, it is clear that communication, or the lack of it, is causing the most distress. The shambolic education reforms continue to divide our city. If you are a school closing or merging then you have to fight for some semblance of fairness. If you have been left untouched then you breathe a sigh of relief and then continue about your daily chores.

Then there are some who will not speak out because if it comes to fruition it may narrow their future employment opportunities. It’s exactly the same if you have been a winner in the government buyout for red zoned homes, as you re-position yourself and get on with your life. But if you lost equity or are still awaiting information then you are meant to be grateful and just wait. Touting numbers as to how many have accepted is just a figure. What isn’t told is how many had no choice or the real consequence of what they had to accept. Some have been happily paid out by their insurance companies and then there are those who are in for a long haul. What seems so unfair about this

affordability and fairness. We are a city on the brink. We have many plans, we have funding and we have people willing to work. But we also have people being put through the hoops through no fault of their own. The risks with this are the health of our community. A good protest is healthy because it allows one to voice, support or appreciate we can do this freely and as a right. Every school in Canterbury should have been present at the protest last Saturday as no one can sit back with any certainty any more about this city and Canterbury’s direction. We are being trialled for all sorts of social experiments and with the lack of understanding from the government on social outcomes versus economic realities we seem to be poles apart on our most precious of resources –our people.

West to east adventure for YMCA members Walking, running and cycling the 230 kilometres from Kumara on the West Coast to Christchurch city is a challenge for the most hardened of athletes, but a group of fitness enthusiasts aged between 70 and 90, took it all in their stride. The coast to coast event was part of the YMCA’s celebrations marking 150 years of community service in Christchurch. A total of 31 members of Life Fit, which is a fitness, recreational and social club for men and women over 60 years of age, took part in the

is if you have been successful in your negotiations then you get to adapt and get on with your life. If you are still battling with any number of authorities then you are stuck in no man’s land. It now means people have to find a way in which to vent their angst, their anger, their disappointment after exhausting all avenues. That now seems to be either through the media or through protest. It seems as if people have to use any method they can to jump the queue. That is if anyone knew what the queue was for. After all this time it seems unfathomable that there is not a system that prioritises what needs to be done for the people. One that is based on vulnerability,

YMCA Christchurch chief executive Josie Ogden Schroeder said it was an appropriate way to see in the organisation’s 150th year and a credit to the YMCA gym trainers who encouraged their older members to give it a go.

THE Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Oceania is raising funds to purchase a rapid response vehicle for the St John ambulance service. The vehicle is scheduled to join the fleet next June. Currently, St John operates eight or nine rapid response vehicles in Christchurch, according to customer and services manager Christine Prince. The vehicles are equipped with the same life-saving devices as an ambulance but they cannot transport patients. Ms Prince said the vehicles could travel more quickly to emergency scenes, negotiating Christchurch’s roads faster than an ambulance can. The single crew rapid response begins treatment while an ambulance is on the way if necessary. The rapid response vehicles are about half

the price of an ambulance. So far, the Taiwanese group has raised half the funds for the vehicle. At a ceremony on Sunday, September 16, they presented St John with a cardboard vehicle to celebrate their commitment to donating the funds for this vehicle and continuing to fundraise for St John in the future. Christchurch Central Member of Parliament Nicky Wagner said she was glad to see St John incorporating the more agile vehicles into the emergency response team. After the February 22 earthquake, Taiwan sent the first urban search and rescue unit. Jack Wu, vice-president of World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce, said the organisation had already donated rapid response vehicles to St John chapters in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland and would donate one to Brisbane next.

School rally organisers plan next step Chelsea Shover chelsea@mainlandpress.co.nz

FOR two hours on Saturday afternoon, principals, teachers, students and Labour and Green MPs spoke to an estimated 3000 people who turned out with placards to Hagley Park to protest the school consolidations and closures proposed two weeks ago. At Christchurch’s second major rally in a week, themes emerged in signs and speeches. This is a blueprint for the rest of the country. Intermediate schools, smaller schools and schools in lower socioeconomic communities are being disproportionately targeted. After the rally, organisers and speakers gathered to debrief and plan future actions to gain a voice in decisions about Christchurch schools. One challenge was to show the rest of New Zealand that if it can happen in Canterbury it can happen anywhere. Another, they said, was to make sure children who chose to participate in the rallies weren’t perceived as coerced. The next step is likely to be a march after the school holidays, possibly from Cranmer Square to Latimer Square so audiences outside Canterbury could see the extent of rubble that still remains. Since only first-hand documents are permitted as evidence for Parliament, principals from affected schools may compose a letter to express their concerns to Wellington. A rally last Wednesday called for a return to democracy on the 119th anniversary of women winning the right to vote. On the heels of the schools announcement, rally organisers created Vote Canterbury Kids, with a physical petition – metres of cloth for children to sign in paint and vivid – and

an accompanying online petition. By Saturday, the cloth was full of bright signatures and messages. Giuliana Tucker, a University of Canterbury student who helped organise the Suffrage Day rally, said on Saturday that Vote Canterbury Kids planned to deliver the petition to Parliament in 100 days. “100 days to rebuild democracy,” she said. Many children were in attendance at Saturday’s rally, in the crowd and at the microphone. Carol Rooks, whose granddaughter was one of the four girls from Greenpark School who spoke emotionally near the beginning of the rally, said her granddaughter and friends decided that day they wanted to speak. Such spontaneity characterised the student speakers: as adult organisers emphasised, the children who spoke had chosen to do so. One of the girls from Greenpark explained that teachers there helped her learn with her dyslexia. She started to cry as she expressed, in plain terms, the confusion surrounding why schools with growing rolls, bilingual classes, and new renovations were earmarked for closure. “We don’t want to close,” she said. “Because we’ve just had a new fence put in.” Shirley Intermediate school teacher Grant Hakaria said closing Shirley, Manning and Branston - the only intermediate schools with bilingual Suffrage rally: A crowd of hundreds turned out to a rally organised on Wednesday, September 19, Photo: Gracie Fea classes - would mean students would stop learn- which was held in part to protest the shake-up of education in Christchurch. ing Maori language at year six. “It’s devastating,” he said, adding that it would be hard to expect families to remain in the neighborhood without the school.

More volunteers earn concert entry Tom Doudney tom@mainlandpress.co.nz

MORE than 16,000 volunteer hours have so far been logged by Cantabrians wanting to attend a concert for volunteers in November. The Concert, organised by the Volunteer Army Foundation, aims to reward those who volunteer and encourage those who don’t with an eight-hour music event featuring 20 bands, who will also be volunteering their time. To get a ticket for the concert you either have to volunteer for one of more than 150 projects on the foundation’s website or you can provide proof that you already volunteered. Four hours of volunteer work is the requirement. Organiser and Student Volunteer Army founder Sam Johnson said the target was to get 10,000 people at the concert, which would equate to 40,000 hours of volunteer work. “It’s trying to change the way we look at money and the way we look at time so you can’t buy your way into it at all, it’s only for people who have done four hours of service.” Fellow organiser and Student Volunteer Army member Jason Pemberton said the Christchurch earthquakes had raised the profile of volunteering. “New Zealand has got one of the highest rates of volunteering in the world,” Mr Pemberton said. “Seventy per cent of Christchurch people volunteer already in some way, shape or form.” He was hoping an upcoming ‘Spring Clean’ initiative would be one of the volunteering projects to benefit from the idea. “The Spring Clean is a new initiative set up to help lots of individual private properties as well as tidy up a suburb. rock, has made no significant difference to the amount of rock likely to fall onto the road and beyond in any future significant seismic events.” Ideas which have been floated for the road’s repair in the past include a rockfall shelter similar to the one on the Otira Gorge, on State Highway 73 to the West Coast. Ms Parfitt said the council’s aim had always been to open the road, if possible, and a variety of options for reinstating it, along with measures to reduce the potential impacts of rockfall, were being explored. “The option the council staff are currently investigating will involve complex work, including excavation and stabilisation techniques across the Crater Rim bluffs. It would also allow access to the Lyttelton Port Company quarry to be re-established.” She said until the investigations were complete the council could not confirm timeframes for when any repairs may begin, but if they did start it could possibly take two to three years to complete. Mr Davie said LPC would like to access the port quarry once it was safe to do so. “The quarry holds approximately 80,000 cubic metres of material that would be beneficial towards the 10-hectare reclamation at Te Awaparahi Bay. Over 380,851 tonnes of material has been deposited in the reclamation to help make up to the current area of 2.7 hectares,” he said.

TWO couples will soon have their do-ityourself skills put to the test in Canterbury. TV2 has announced their show Mitre 10 Dream Home will be returning to television for 2013 and will be based in Christchurch. Registration to become one of the couples on the Mitre 10

Dream Home show is now open and closes on October 7. Couples can register online via the TVNZ website. New Zealanders will then be given the chance to vote for their favourite six couples. The final two will be revealed when the show airs.

THE Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority is now calling for Expressions of Interest from design, cost control and project management professionals interested in the first Anchor Projects to go to market – the Avon River Precinct, the North Frame and a portion of the East Frame. The Christchurch Central

Development Unit (CCDU) will be overseeing the process. CCDU director Warwick Isaacs said expressions of interest were the first stage of the process. Once a shortlist list of appropriately experienced consultants had been identified, they would be invited to submit their detailed proposals for consideration.

Samantha Early samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz REPAIRS to Sumner Road, between Lyttelton and Sumner, would take between two and three years to complete if it is deemed realistic to do them at all. The hillside road has been closed since the February 22 earthquake last year after it suffered severe rockfall. Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (LPC) chief executive Peter Davie said the road was critical in providing access between Christchurch and the port for commodities not suitable for the Lyttelton tunnel. “These commodities include hazardous cargo, such as fuel, and oversize items, such as machinery. “Alternative access between Christchurch and Lyttelton is Gebbies Pass, which adds over 25 kms to the journey.” Mr Davie said the road was also a vital backup route in the event of damage or closure to the road or rail tunnels. He said the company would like to see it reopened to ensure the unconstrained movement of cargo to and from the port, and was in ongoing discussions with the Christchurch City Council. The council’s general manager city environment Jane Parfitt said Sumner Road had been impacted significantly by rockfall as a result of the earthquakes. “Remediation, including the clearing of loose

Landfill neighbours face five more years

Tonnes down, more to go: Christchurch City Council water and waste manager Mark Christison speaks at Burwood Resource Recovery Park’s Site B, where demolition rubble is processed for recycling or disposal.

Chelsea Shover chelsea@mainlandpress.co.nz

THE Burwood Resource Recovery Park in Bottle Lake Forest received resource consent last week to continue processing earthquake rubble until 2017. As conditions of the resource consent, the park will shift the Landfill Avenue formation, construct an acoustic barrier and limit operation to Monday through Saturday 5am to 9pm, excluding public holidays. Resource recovery park chairman Gill Cox said he expected the sorting, recycling and disposing to finish in three to five years. The site has processed 350,000 tonnes of rubble so far and has 150,000 tonnes to go. Since the landfill reopened, residents living close to the site have dealt with loud and heavy trucks, dust and flashing lights. Tumara Park Residents Association member Geoff

Olds said the biggest problem was uncovered trucks blowing dust along the road. Christchurch City Council water and waste manager Mark Christison said covering the trucks was not feasible because irregularly shaped materials would puncture the covers. Requiring covers would also create a disparity in policies between the city’s landfills, which could affect dumping prices. During a media tour of the site last week, Mr Olds suggested the city council should sweep the streets weekly. A fortnightly sweeping was one of the options mentioned in the resource consent’s section on dust and odour management. Others were wetting the roads, using a vacuum truck in certain sections, removing bumps in the road and repairing potholes.

However, the heavy trucks travelling 80 kilometres an hour on Prestons Road have been a problem, he said. “It’s quite tough on people,” he said, explaining that besides the noise, residents with cars had trouble pulling onto the road. Mr O’Dowd said ideally he would like to see the speed limit reduced to 50 kph. The Burwood Landfill operated from 1984 to 2005 and was reopened after the earthquakes to process rubble that could not be sorted onsite. Metal and untreated wood can be resold and reused, while treated wood and other demolition materials go into the landfill. The site also processes sand from broken pipes. Gas emissions from the landfill power civic buildings.

The road realignment may shift road issues from primarily affecting residents of Tumara Park to affecting homes in the Waitikiri Drive area. The resource consent included a condition to form a community liaison group representing Burwood residents, local land owners and the landfill operator. A community meeting will be held on Monday, October 15, at the Queenspark church at 7.30pm to answer questions about the consent conditions and establishing the community liaison group. Effects on residents haven’t been limited to noise and dust. Alpine View Care Centre director Simon O’Dowd said there has been a little dust but care centre residents had not complained.

Arthritis appeal on ARTHRITIS New Zealand’s annual appeal week has begun, the street day collection will be tomorrow. In the Canterbury region, there are about 87,000 people living with one of the more than 140 different forms of arthritis. Of these, about 58,000 live in Christchurch City. Around another 5600 live in the Selwyn District. Arthritis New Zealand chief executive Sandra Kay said arthritis was New Zealand’s leading cause of disability, and osteoarthritis was the most common form. It is the result of a mechanical breakdown in the joints. When a joint develops osteoarthritis, the cartilage gets thin and rough, and, in some cases, completely breaks down, leaving the bones unprotected. The next most common forms of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and gout; and research indicates that people with arthritis are five per cent less likely to be employed than those without arthritis and that there are 17,940 people receiving sickness or invalid’s benefits as a result of musculo-skeletal conditions, the bulk of which will be arthritis. Although arthritis is thought of as an older person’s condition, it can occur to anyone at any age and there are more than 1000 children in New Zealand living with it. Arthritis New Zealand has a team of Arthritis Educators, who provide expert advice and guidance, help people learn how to self-manage and provide up-to-date information about the various forms of arthritis and the treatments that are available. Watch out for street collectors in their bright orange vests carrying gerberas tomorrow, phone 0900 333 20 to donate $20, or visit www.arthritis.org.nz. Appeal week ends on Sunday.

Trial run: The sauna (clockwise from top left) being assembled and tested in Purau recently.

‘Dinosauna’ open to public Tom Doudney tom@mainlandpress.co.nz

LYTTELTON’S latest Gap Filler project – a public sauna – will open to the public this week on the corner of Oxford and London Streets. The sauna, the brainchild of Christchurch architect Fabricio Fernandes, will be located on the site of the former public library building most recently occupied by Moda Fotografica. Gap Filler member Trent Hiles said the sauna would be installed today, tested tomorrow and ready for public use on Saturday night. “In true Lyttelton and Gap Filler style this

is real experiment, not something you usually find on a vacant site, but Fabricio has gone to a huge amount of trouble and expense himself to create the installation,” he said. “It’s a sauna where you need to keep your clothes on and maintain some public decorum but it will be as much about the public experience as about having a bona fide sauna experience.” A model dinosaur for the public to play on already occupied the site and the sauna had

been loosely nicknamed the ‘dinosauna’. The sauna would be heated by a pot belly stove and have a capacity of about 20 people at a time. It had received the thumbs up from the local fire brigade and it was hoped visitors from outside Lyttelton would also come and check it out. Mr Hiles said the project was “one weekend only” for now but that could change.

Cheeky kea focus of kids’ book Samantha Early samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz

WITH two of his picture books among the top 50 as voted for by New Zealand readers, author and songwriter Craig Smith is launching his latest offering, Kaha the Kea. Mr Smith’s previous books, The Wonky Donkey and Willbee the Bumblebee, were seventh and 34th respectively in this year’s Whitcoulls Kids Top 50. The Wonky Donkey was number one last year and Mr Smith said it was still the numberone-selling kid’s book in Australia and New Zealand for the year, with his accompanying song outselling those by popular children’s band The Wiggles. With such success on both sides of the Tasman, Kaha the Kea has a uniquely New Zealand focus, which was inspired by Mr Smith’s childhood growing up in Queenstown. The book, set in the 1970s, is the written form of one of the songs on his album, Not Just for Kids. “The song is so much fun, kids jump around and flap their arms and scream like keas.” There is also a strong link with conservation efforts for the world’s only alpine parrot species, with Mr Smith also fronting a 12minute documentary about the birds, which are considered the world’s most intelligent. He is also making donations and publicising the work of the Kea Conservation Trust.

News in brief

EQC review

17

A LEGISLATIVE review of the Earthquake Commission Act 1993 is being carried out. The Treasury-led review will draw from lessons learned from the Canterbury earthquakes. It will focus on what types of property EQC insures, its roles, how it prices its insurance and how the Crown’s risk exposure should be financed. Finance Minister Bill English said the Canterbury earthquakes have been the most significant test of the EQC model since its inception. A discussion document outlining proposed changes will be released next year when the public can make submissions, before final recommendations are made to Cabinet.

Walking Festival

THE first-ever The Breeze Walking Festival gets underway on Saturday, connecting people and places in Christchurch’s eastern suburbs. Organised by the Christchurch City Council, the festival will include 22 free group walks over nine days. The walks range from Bottle Lake Forest to a trek up the Port Hills. They are aimed to focus on Christchurch’s eastern suburbs, with many being led by local walking group leaders and designed to celebrate the sense of community that was tested by the recent earthquakes.

For thirty-six years, James Patterson has written unputdownable, pulse-racing novels. Now, he has written a book that surpasses all of them. ZOO is the thriller he was born to write. All over the world, brutal attacks are crippling entire cities. Jackson Oz, a young biologist, watches the escalating events with an increasing sense of dread. When he witnesses a coordinated lion ambush in Africa, the enormity of the violence to come becomes terrifyingly clear. With the help of ecologist Chloe Tousignant, Oz races to warn world leaders before it’s too late. The attacks are growing in ferocity, cunning, and planning, and soon there will be no place left for humans to hide. With wildly inventive imagination and white-knuckle suspense that rivals Stephen King at his very best, James Patterson’s ZOO is an epic, nonstop thrill-ride.

Precious blue: Items on display as part of the Things in Blue exhibition.

THINGS in Blue is the theme at a small Tai Tapu art gallery, which opened its first exhibition since the September 4, 2010 earthquake last weekend. Lavendale Gallery owners Aaron and Susan Seo moved with their children from South Korea to New Zealand in 1997 after falling in love with the country during an earlier visit. A few years later they purchased an old character home, now called Lavendale Estate, which grew to host a small gallery, lavender farm, café and an exhibition space of their Korean antiques, which they hoped would introduce their culture to the community in the Selwyn district and Christchurch. As the number of items on display quickly outgrew the house, Mr Seo and son Alex have worked for almost 10 years on renovating the old wool shed to function as a gallery. The upcoming exhibition will be the first in the new space. It will comprise pottery, paintings, sculptures, antiques, embroideries and jewellery from the East and West, under the theme blue and white. It is part of an annual exhibition series which ran from 2007 to 2009 but was postponed after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 damaged buildings and many of the precious items on display. The exhibition will run until October 21 at 12 Ahuriri Road, Tai Tapu, with an entry fee of $2.

Algae to blame for red water REPORTS last week of a possible large oil spill in Lyttelton Harbour have proved incorrect with the false alarm being put down to an algal bloom. Environment Canterbury’s (ECan) marine oil pollution response team investigated the area but samples showed it was algae, not oil, ECan’s regional on scene commander Jim Dilley said. “The algal bloom looks just like an oil spill when viewed from a distance but once you get closer you can see that the coloured particles are under the surface of the water, rather than on the top where oil would float.” ECan’s senior coastal water quality scientist Dr Lesley Bolton-Ritchie said the bloom, Mesodinium rubrum, was a very common variety.

“The discolouration of the water, which looks like oil, is due to the large amount of bloom that can change the seawater colour to brick red, brown or rusty red, which it is known for,” she said. “The reason for this outbreak of algal bloom could be a combination of sunny days and the water warming up mixed with recent rainfall causing the addition of nutrients into the water from rivers and streams. “The bloom is non-toxic so the public has nothing to worry about.” After being discovered in the outer part of the harbour last week, the bloom appears to have been pushed further up the harbour by the wind. If you see an oil spill you can report this to the pollution hotline on 0800 76 55 88.

STUDENTS from Manning Intermediate have made the finals of a nationwide competition in which they had to illustrate their love of learning. Four boys who designed posters for the I Love Learning art competition are among 10 finalists in their categories. The competition is run by Education Aotearoa, the magazine of teachers’ union, the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI). Dylan Peagram said he wanted to enter because there was an “awesome” prize of an iPad2 for the winner in each of the 10 categories, along with an iPad2 for their class. The iPads were being supplied by competition sponsor Telco Technology Services. Marley Mackie-Coffin said his poster was inspired by Pasifika and Maori designs, with Samoan and Maori greetings featuring prominently. Brannan Calder said when planning his poster he was thinking about New Zealand and also the sports and subjects he liked doing at school. For the background he printed a pattern three times, ripped it up in parts, stuck it together and dyed it blue. All said they enjoyed learning at Manning Intermediate and were disappointed to hear of its proposed closure in the government’s shakeup of education for greater Christchurch. They said intermediates helped them prepare for high school. “It’s a small school so you get more opportunities,” Brannan said. “It’s multicultural, everyone’s different, no-one’s the same.” More information about the I Love Learning competition can be found online at www. ilovelearning.org.nz. The winners will be announced in the fourth school term, which starts on October 15.

Burning demolition waste leads to fine A TAI Tapu man has been found guilty on three charges of breaching the Resource Management Act by burning demolition waste at his semi-rural property near Christchurch. Peter Wayne McKenzie appeared before Judge P R Kellar on August 7 at Christchurch District Court and was found guilty of burning demolition waste including treated timber and rubber tyres, allowing the discharge of contaminants into the air as well as disregarding an abatement notice specifically prohibiting the activity. He was fined $12,000 and ordered to pay costs to Environment Canterbury of $2,842.10 along with court and solicitor’s costs of $245.89. “On the whole, those involved in the disposal of demolition waste are doing what they should,” Environment Canterbury resource management director Kim Drummond said. “However, there are still a few irresponsible people who put the environment at risk by failing to follow the correct procedures. Our message to them is that they will be held

accountable when they are found breaching the rules. “It is important that people and businesses work with Environment Canterbury to clarify what they should or should not burn on private land; then having received that advice it is important they follow it.” During sentencing Judge Kellar noted that the lawful and appropriate disposal of demolition waste is an ongoing and significant issue in Canterbury for obvious reasons. “It is essential that the rules be observed so as to avoid adding the effects of pollution from harmful chemicals to the woes of people in Christchurch and surrounding areas.” Tests showed the presence of chromium and arsenic in the ash, which indicates that treated timber was burnt. Judge Kellar noted the potentially adverse effects of burning treated wood, metals and plastic would be acute to humans if they inhaled particles containing arsenic.

Activities mark Lyttelton and Antarctic links THe strong historic and present-day links between Antarctica and Lyttelton are being marked with a series of activities being run in Lyttelton as part of the month-long Christchurch IceFest. Lyttelton Port has chartered the Tug Lyttelton, which will run two 90-minute trips around the harbour. During the trip historian Baden Norris will provide an overview of Antarctic visits and the history of Lyttelton itself. These trips are on Sunday, October 7, and Sunday, October 14, departing at 2pm from the ferry wharf. There is no charge, but passengers are encouraged to offer a gold coin donation, which will help support the Lyttelton Historical Museum Society. Each trip is limited to 140 people. Bookings can be made at the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre, phone 328-9093 or email infocentre@lyttelton.net.nz. This Friday at the Naval Point Club Auckland alt-folk act Bond Street Bridge will present The Explorers Club. This will include stories of Captain Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova venture and the difficulties of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The programme will feature original folk songs interspersed with spoken stories, bringing to life the triumphs and tragedies of the Antarctic adventurers of the early 20th century. The concert starts at 9pm and doors open at 8pm. Tickets are $32 and available from eventfinder.co.nz, Penny Lane Records and Mondo Vino Liquor Store. On Saturday, September 29, and Sunday, September 30, there is the opportunity to spend a few hours exploring Quail Island.

Reinvention of Sydenham underway

IT’S hard not to notice the giant SYDM. QTR billboards on Colombo and Brougham streets. The historic borough of Sydenham has rebranded itself the Sydenham Quarter (SYDM. QTR in trendy-text speak) with the aim of triggering a post-earthquake renaissance. It’s the work of a volunteer organisation of the area’s business owners and managers, run on a shoestring budget. Sydenham Quarter vice chairman Anthony Barker said the former Sydenham Business and Community Association had been working in the area for several years. But the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011 devastated Colombo Street. “There is very little damage in the other parts but I guess the face of Sydenham has sort of been trampled on.” Mr Barker, who owns Carlyle Street business Southern Monograms, said it became obvious Sydenham needed to reinvent itself. “Not just get back to where it was before the earthquakes…but actually reach beyond where it was.” The hope was things would get rebuilt quickly and Sydenham would be ahead of a lot of other suburbs in redeveloping. It was one of the first suburban centres in the city to have a Christchurch City Council-led master plan for its earthquake rebuild vision. The Sydenham Master Plan, started in May 2011, was adopted by the council in June this year and further funding for its implementation will be consulted on, starting April next year. Under the plan it was envisaged more people would end up living there. In the meantime, realising the area needed to help itself, the Sydenham Quarter team has been

busy rebranding after carrying out consultation with local stakeholders and adopting an image created by Mark Spurgeon of Sydenham-based design company Publica. “It has quite a modern feel to it but still it’s got quite a bit of an industrial edge to it. Although there is some retail along Colombo St it really is still an industrial part of Christchurch,” Mr Barker said. He saw Sydenham as an area where people could do a variety of things - drop their cars in for a warrant or service and in the meantime do some shopping, have a coffee or sort out uniforms for their children’s sports team. He wanted the area to appeal to people who lived in Cashmere and would drive through Sydenham on their way to Merivale. “They can see what is at their feet and stop at Sydenham instead.” The Sydenham Quarter covers an area bordered by Moorhouse Avenue, Antigua St, Milton St, Burlington St, Brougham St, Waltham Road and back to Moorhouse Ave. According to a survey they conducted in April, in that space are 756 businesses, an estimated daytime working population of 5128. So far 37, or five per cent, of the businesses have signed up to be part of the Sydenham Quarter and the immediate goal is to increase that to 20 per cent. The next step for the organisation, which already has a Facebook page, is launching a website (www.sydm.co.nz) at the end of this month. They are also organising a family day-type event for Saturday, November 10, called ‘All Things Auto’ to highlight the area’s automotiverelated businesses and workshops.

Art society celebrates 50 years with retrospective Tom Doudney tom@mainlandpress.co.nz

THE Town and Country Society of Artists will exhibit work from its foundation members at St Andrew’s College next month to celebrate its golden jubilee. The society was founded in 1962 by Canterbury artist and tutor Frank Gross, who had come to New Zealand from Austria in 1934 and studied with Russell Clark at the Dunedin School of Art. After moving to Canterbury, he had a vision to unite art clubs under an umbrella organisation for the purpose of holding exhibitions, painting days and workshops, as well as providing a goal to which developing artists could aspire. Although Mr Gross died in 1963, the society continued and today supports 10 member groups – Sumner, Rangiora, Cheviot, St Albans, Canterbury Pastel Society, Thursday Group, Diamond Harbour, Ellesmere, Lincoln and WEA Sketch Club. Current president Mary Hargreaves said the society

had played a significant role in raising the profile of art and local artists in Canterbury at a time when art was not fashionable in New Zealand. “Because we were a pioneering country we were building a country, not thinking about art,” she said. “Rita Angus and all those sorts of people weren’t recognised. They went through this school of art and then a lot of them went overseas and painted in Europe and the work they produced was very beautiful and is becoming now very recognised and very valuable.” The exhibition will feature works by founding members such as Mr Gross, George Genet, Isabelle Hudson and Russell Laidlaw, among others. It will run from Friday, October 5, to Sunday, October 7, opening daily from 10am to 5pm except on the Sunday when it closes at 4pm. Works by current members will be for sale during the exhibition.

Food show well attended THE Food Show Christchurch returned to the CBS Canterbury Arena on the weekend of September 14 to 16 with a total attendance of more than 10,500 visitors across the weekend (an 11.5 per cent increase from the previous show). “We’re thrilled to have brought The Food Show back to Christchurch and can’t wait for

next year,” Food Show organiser Dona White said. “Our exhibitors are raving about how successful it was for them, many of them selling out completely by the last hour of Sunday. We’ve also had such happy feedback from visitors and really felt the warm welcome of the Canterbury foodie community.”

Technical Categories and You Building and Housing* deals with building legislation and controls. It provides information and advice about building regulations. It has divided the residential green zone into three technical categories TC1, TC2 or TC3. If you live in the flat area of the residential green zone your property is in one of these categories.

What are foundation technical categories?

What do they mean for me?

Site-specific foundations are not unusual.

They are a guide to the level of site investigation required and the most appropriate foundations for your home. Houses with appropriate foundations will perform better in future earthquakes.

Your builder can use standard foundations for concrete slabs and timber floors.

If you are in TC1

If you are in TC2 Enhanced concrete foundations are needed and there are templates in Building and Housing’s guidance. Standard timber foundations can be used for houses with lightweight cladding and timber floors.

What was the basis for deciding which areas were TC1, TC2 or TC3? The boundaries were the result of intensive research and analysis based on a mix of historical and post-earthquake data, including geotechnical investigations, observed land and building damage and groundwater depth.

If you are in TC3 and your foundations need to be replaced There is no one-size-fits-all option. You need geotechnical advice from a chartered professional engineer and site-specific foundations designed for the ground conditions.

Designing foundations to suit ground conditions is not new. There are many other areas of the country where local authorities require specific engineering design for foundations. Foundations designed to suit to ground conditions are a sound investment to safeguard your home for the future.

Repairing foundations Not all foundations will need to be replaced. The guidance gives a range of options for repairs. You may need to consider replacing heavy roofing and cladding materials with lighter options. This will reduce the load on your foundations.

Foundations for TC3 homes Building and Housing’s guidance recommends three types of replacement foundation for homes in TC3. They are: deep piles, site ground improvements, and surface structures with shallow foundations. Chartered professional engineers will be able to determine what is the most appropriate foundation type for each property based on geotechnical information. Deep piles down to depths of up Ground to 20m or more level Concert floor

Solid bearing Loose layer soil

Short piles Ground level Concert floor

Compacted soil Loose soil

Deep piles

Ground improvements

Loose soil (gradual densification of soil layers) to solid bearing layer

Short piles

Light-weight re-levellable platform

Concrete underslab

Loose soil

Ground level Timber floor

Compacted gravel raft

Loose soil

Light-weight platform with underslab

Deep piles

Site ground improvements

Surface structure with shallow foundations

Deep piles are already widely used in parts of Christchurch in peaty areas or areas where there is soft ground. They can down as far as 20 metres.

Site ground improvement options aim to strengthen the land to create a better building platform. Once the land is strengthened, you can use standard TC2 (concrete slab or timber) foundations.

There are several options. One example is to construct a timber floor on shallow or short piles and wrap the perimeter foundation with plywood sheeting to provide bracing against earthquake shaking.

In August last year, the government announced an $11.6 million plan to clean up Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. One year on, has any progress been made? Tom Doudney reports. FROM plentiful food basket of the local iwi to one of New Zealand’s most polluted lakes, the story of Te Waihora’s sad decline has been told many times. But last year it seemed a new, more hopeful chapter might finally be in the works when former Environment Minister Nick Smith announced $11.6 million of combined funding from the government, Environment Canterbury (ECan), Ngai Tahu, Fonterra and other organisations, would be put into a major clean-up effort. The government’s $6 million contribution was to go towards Whakaora Te Waihora – a Ngai Tahu and ECan-led project advancing more than 10 years of restoration work already undertaken around the lake. The rest of the money was to support additional clean-up efforts. Terrianna Smith, chairperson of Ngai Tahu’s Te Waihora Management Board, said the first half of the year was spent laying the groundwork for the first full year of work, which had just begun. Native plants were listed and ordered, strategies were developed for everything from weed management to engaging with land owners and project manager Amanda Ward was hired. Ms Ward, who has managed restoration projects in Lake Michigan and other water bodies in the American state of Illinois, said while Te Waihora’s shallow saline and freshwater mix was different from what she had worked with previously, the challenges were very similar. “Restoration requires a holistic approach, to look at the catchment in its entirety,” she said. “Public engagement is key, particularly

good communication with landowners, local communities and local municipalities. Big changes take a long time and this is a long-term project.” Ms Smith said the main focus now was on native plantings, re-grading drain slopes, and engaging with land owners in four key focus catchments - Kaituna, Halswell/Huritini, Waikekewai and lake margins. One of the more eyebrow-raising statements made in the Minister’s original announcement was that sensitive farmland bordering the lake would be bought and retired. However, Ms Smith said there were no plans for purchasing land at this time.

Ngai Tahu is after one thing and the farmers are after another… it’s trying to find that fine line to work with both of them.

When only the best will do

– Dairy farmer Simon Manson

A spokesperson for the Ministry for the Environment concurred but added that “if there is any potential for land purchases in the future these would be funded through the current allocation of $11.6 million”. Lincoln University professor and WaihoraEllesmere Trust member Ken Hughey said the project had gotten off to a slow start but he acknowledged that building an effective relationship between all parties could take time. While $11.6 million was a good first-up

investment, a much greater commitment would be needed long term. “The current focus is certainly not on every single catchment that contributes to the lake it can’t be because there simply isn’t enough resource there and it’s going to take a long time.” He believed the option of strategic buy-outs of ecologically sensitive land should remain on the table. Motukarara dairy farmer and Lake Settlers Association chairman Simon Manson said land owners hadn’t heard anything more about buy outs since Mr Smith’s announcement and he questioned whether there was a need for it as farmers only owned about 25 per cent of the land surrounding the lake. The rest was already controlled by groups including Ngai Tahu and the Department of Conservation. He said there would be no quick fix to cleaning up the lake. “Ngai Tahu is after one thing and the farmers are after another thing and it’s trying to find that fine line to work with both of them.” He also worried the local nutrient limits ECan was likely to enforce in the area through its Land and Water Regional Plan would be too unrealistic for farmers to manage and felt the lake’s health wasn’t as bad as many people thought. “The lake may not look attractive when you stand on the edge and look at it but as far as fish go it is an extremely healthy lake. There are huge amounts of flounder out there; there have been whitebait for the last three weeks.”

News in brief Gloucester Street closed again GLOUCESTER Street has been closed off again after only reopening for three months. Part of the road is closed to traffic for up to four weeks while buildings on both sides are demolished. The main demolition work on both the Farmers building and the Crystal Plaza

The Toowoomba 15-year-old development side played the Papanui Tigers Under 15s team as part of a South Island tour, which

will also include games against sides from Hornby, Queenstown and the West Coast. Price, who had played for Toowoomba against Papanui on a tour when he was a school boy, accepted an invitation by the Papanui club to make an appearance. A crowd of about 300 turned up to the event.

He stopped and went into the house where an elderly couple was trapped. Mr Evans managed to save the man but unfortunately couldn’t reach the woman. Four others were also awarded the medal in a ceremony held at Government House in Wellington last week.

Bin inn is full of goodies B in Inn New Brighton is looking towards Christmas – it’s only three months away – with a plan to take the stress out of the Festive Season. The owner-operator of Bin Inn New Brighton, Nikki Griffin, wants people to change their way of thinking about Christmas time and take the financial pressure off. The need to give expensive presents is too great with so many people struggling financially and she has an answer to help relieve the burden. It’s about people getting back to basic concepts of making small gifts to be given as a heartfelt gesture, by making biscuits, or a cake, or soaps, even an amount of muesli, or flavoured salts, even scented oils. “Bin Inn New Brighton can help”, says Nikki. It has a wide range of basic ingredients to undertake gift making and she is encouraged by the number of young people she believes are moving in that direction. Bin Inn New Brighton has a wide range of ingredients to make gift making easier, and recipes and information to help. She says there’s a huge amount of information available in the community and she is

Brush the edges with a little water and tightly roll, ensuring the ends are folded as well.

customers provide hints and seek products which she is often able to access then stock for all customers. Nikki says her clientele is quite greenoriented and while some older people are no longer around, younger ones, including school children, are replacing them. She says, “You have to go to a supermarket, but you choose to come to Bin Inn.” She has five friendly staff, who’ve been known to drop off shopping for customers, and the friendly approach extends to Facebook (BinInn New Brighton), or on Billboardme (for information and tips). Bin Inn New Brighton is in Surfside Mall, and the email address is newbrighton@ bininn.co.nz. Phone Nikki and staff on (03) 388 7214.

Free de-stress courses More than a month ago, Maggie took part in a course called The Art of Breathing and has found the results astounding. “It’s huge. I never thought you could change so much in your body through breathing, and it puts you in the most beautiful state of calm.” Since the first September 2010 earthquake, 40 Free De-stress courses have been run by volunteers for The Art of Living Foundation, one of the world’s largest volunteer-based, humanitarian and educational NGOs, and over 800 people have completed the course. Art of living’s De-stress course comprises four consecutive sessions - two evenings followed by a weekend. It involves simple yet powerful breathing and relaxation practices. The Sudarshan Kriya, one of the main breathing practices taught, is associated with restoration of normal sleep patterns, significant reductions in anxiety, relief from depression, clarity of thought, improved brain function and enhanced feelings of well-being. These techniques have been used successfully for over thirty years and are backed by

Boosting vitamin D levels the easy way kidney disease; take medications that affect Vitamin D levels; live in southern regions of New Zealand and don’t get regular midday sun exposure between May and August; and for exclusively breastfed infants and mothers with any of the above risk factors for Vitamin D deficiency. In adults, severe Vitamin D deficiency can lead to muscle weakness, bone discomfort and softening of the bone resulting in fractures and breaks. Nonspecific weakness as well as muscle discomfort can occur when Vitamin D levels are low which is sometimes misdiagnosed as other conditions causing discomfort and fatigue. Vitamin D inadequacy may also affect blood pressure, blood sugar balance and cellular health. Vitamin D has important immune functions and more recently it has been discovered that Vitamin D can help balance our body’s natural immunity (known as innate immunity). Supplements with Vitamin D have been shown to support the production of special antimicrobial peptides which in turn help protect against ills and chills and general health. Low levels of Vitamin D3 can affect respiratory health in children. Adults taking Vitamin D3 supplements for skeletal health have also reported a reduction in the symptoms of ills and chills. Dietary supplements are not a replacement for a balanced diet. Always read the label and use as directed. Do not exceed the recommended dose. If symptoms persist, see your health professional.

esearch has shown that even in sunny countries like New Zealand, up to 50 per cent of children and adults have insufficient or deficient levels of Vitamin D, an all-important key to strong, healthy bones and muscles. New Zealand produces few natural foods with high levels of Vitamin D and not everyone can get sufficient sun exposure to get their daily dose, so health experts recommend supplements for a wide range of people to help raise their Vitamin D levels. And now there’s an easy way to get your daily dose in New Zealand. F

resh is best and that’s certainly the case with lettuce. Crisp, fresh lettuce enjoyed within moments of harvesting is hard to match, let alone beat. I have vivid memories from when I was a youngster (approximately 35 years ago) of rows and rows of lettuce in dad’s garden. Big-hearting ones were his choice as a mainstay crop and ‘great lakes’ was the variety he swore by. Often, bundles of lettuce seedlings would appear in newspaper by the back door from neighbours or relatives who had leftover plants. After milking, dad would diligently go out that evening and plant another row, not wanting to waste a plant. Nowadays, lettuce seedlings are available all year round in punnets. Sometimes, I grow my own from seed, the most cost-effective and economical way to grow lettuce. It takes about a month longer. Seed readily germinates within a couple of weeks and is ready to transplant in about a month or when seedlings are about finger size. If time or inclination to grow your own plants from seed isn’t for you, punnets of Growfresh seedlings are available all year round. The bonus when planting these is not just that it’s quicker but also it reduces the chances of transplanting shock due to root disturbance. Plant roots are delicate things and intertwined roots can break at the point of separation or transplanting. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) comes in a wide range of varieties, the difference between them

Choreographers to stage double bill at Court ACCLAIMED Christchurch choreographers Fleur de Thier and Julia Milsom are joining forces to present their latest works in an exciting double bill for the Body Festival 2012 at the Court Theatre. Both Milsom and de Thier had sell-out shows at the Christchurch Arts Festival last year. Minutes of Silence and The Red String Duet, by each choreographer respectively, promises to bring another fantastic and innovative season of contemporary dance to Christchurch audiences this year. Minutes of Silence is the prelude to a larger work of the same name. Milsom’s company, Corrupt Productions, always aims to ‘corrupt’ people’s concepts of dance through collaboration and inspiration from other art forms. With sculptor and composer Chris

Reddington, co-composer, Andrew McMillan and dancer Paul Young working on the piece, Minutes of Silence is Corrupt Productions’ most ambitious foray into collaboration and disciplinary integration. The Red String Duet by de Thier is performed by Julia McKerrow, Sarah Elsworth and Madeleine Krenek and is a sumptuous, visual duet between the dancers and the space. It follows the ilk of Winded and Tilt and continues the ethos of making quality works accessible as established by de Thier’s company, Scrambled Legs in 1998. The Red String Duet is an intimate work that explores the contrast between beautiful, striking imagery and the industrial aspect of the Court Theatre foyer. It highlights human connection and promises to be an emotive and

thought provoking new work. “It is so great to have The Court Theatre open its doors to independent artists. We are really excited about performing in this edgy, unconventional space,” Fleur de Thier said. The performance will be staged in the Court Theatre Foyer, Bernard Street, Addington from Thursday, October 11, to Sunday, October 14, starting at 7pm. Cost $25, $20 concession. Bookings www.courttheatre.org.nz / 0800 333 100 (booking fees apply).

Cycle teams race clock in fun event THE Warmup Pushbikes Cycling Team won the Masters 25-kilometre Canterbury Team Time Trial event on Saturday. The Warmup Pushbikes Black Team of John McKenzie, Lee Johnstone, David Roche and Stephen Mark won in a time of 33 minutes and 20 seconds, beating the Velocity 1 team of Nigel Pink, Ben Hillery, Dave Sullivan and Chris Brooks by 35 seconds. Team spokesperson McKenzie said the team was happy with the win, and hoped the

event would become a regular feature on the Canterbury cycling calendar. “It was a fun event; it’s great working tightly as a team in a time trial event and I hope we see more team time trials as part of other events too. “It would be great to see a national team time trial event back on the calendar and more teams competing.” McKenzie said times and average speeds were slower than last year due to a head wind

on the return journey. The Warmup Pushbikes Cycling Team had won the 40-kilometre open event last year. The Warmup Pushbikes Red team of Glen Quantock, Mark Forsey, Rob Woodgate and Gareth Davies suffered from a puncture and unfortunately dropped Woodgate early, which saw Quantock and Forsey finishing 10 minutes ahead of their team-mates. The Velocity 2 team of Ron Pithie, Tony Gibson, Richard Quested and Gary Ferguson

was third in a time of 35 minutes and 46 seconds. Villa Maria College won the Under 19 and 19 girls’ events and Christchurch Boys High School won the boys Under 16 event. The over 70s event was won by Russell Ward, Eddie Corrigan, Austin Prattley and John Brownie and the Performance Conditioning team of Greg Thompson, Dave Hill, Darryl Queen and Joe Bebbington won the 40kilometre event.

Valerie finally gets her gong

All-rounder: Sophie Devine excels in both hockey and cricket.

Devine career for double international star Tom Doudney

NOT many people have the mental discipline and other attributes necessary to make it to the top level in two different sports, and fewer still can claim to have done so while managing type-1 diabetes. Yet Christchurch resident Sophie Devine has done just that, playing international cricket for the White Ferns and international hockey for the Black Sticks. At the beginning of the month, Devine was helping her provincial hockey side, the Canterbury Cats, win its first national title in a decade. Last Thursday, she boarded a plane with the White Ferns on route to Sri Lanka for the Twenty/20 Cricket World Cup. A prodigious talent from a young age, Devine made the Wellington women’s cricket team at just 14-years-old. A year later she was diagnosed with diabetes. “After the initial shock we pretty much got over it really quickly and learnt you might as well deal with it because it’s not going to change,” Devine says.

PC PROBLEMS? PC slow? Annoying errors and pop ups? Internet not working? Are you secure? Not really sure?

She controls her diabetes with daily medication, without which her body would rapidly deteriorate and she would die. She says exercise has a lot of benefits for diabetics in terms of keeping blood sugar levels down. “I think a lot of people obviously assume that diabetes means the end of a few things but it shouldn’t hinder you in any way. Once you’ve got good control and understand how your body works with insulin, there is nothing stopping you from doing whatever you want.” For Devine, managing her medication is now second nature, which is probably a good thing as she concentrates on her role as an all-rounder in the White Ferns team. Despite being only 23, she is an experienced member of the squad, having won her first cap at the age of 17. Her goals for the World Cup are uncomplicated. “I think obviously the thing is to win the tournament. On an individual level it’s probably just performing to the best of my abilities, contributing to the team with both bat and ball.”

I think, given what she knew, that she showed far more composure than most of us would have been able to. The awarding of the gold does not bring the curtain down on the Val Adams saga for me. Cast your mind back to when it was discovered that Adams was one of five Kiwi athletes not registered by the New Zealand Olympic Association to compete at the games. A complete oversight had occurred, much to the huge distress of those poor athletes. Minister for Sport Murray McCully couldn’t hold back when he was over there and promised he would instigate an inquiry as soon as he and the New Zealand Chef de Mission Dave Currie returned to New Zealand. Great grandstanding by McCully, but to my knowledge this meeting has never taken place. Does it mean that when Currie blamed a staff member for the oversight this was enough for McCully to call any investigation off? Not good enough. Kiwi athletes deserve better.

ON Wednesday, September 19, Val Adams was finally able to bask in the glory of being crowned a gold medal winner from the 2012 London Olympics. It is important to think back to all the drama and trauma this athlete had to go through to finally get the recognition she so thoroughly deserves. Adams is an outstanding example of what is required to not only win a chosen event once at an Olympic Games, but to step up and repeat that achievement. I understand from a very reliable source that one of her competitors was known in advance to have taken enhancement drugs and this was in fact a widely discussed issue prior to competition even getting underway. Imagine then the anger Adams must have felt as she had to stand on the dais and watch a cheat bask in the glory of winning gold, whilst she had to settle for second best - silver. This is the mark of this remarkable champion. Some Kiwis felt at the time that Adams did not take being beaten as graciously as she should have.

here is nothing worse than finding a car light with a hole in the lens that may mean a new light. AutoLights has the answer, with a supply of replacements and a repair system to cut the cost. AutoLights, at 94 Buchan Street, Sydenham, on the corner of Byron Street, supplies and fits auto lights for most models of cars and trucks. They provide value for money by having the right lights, or they can repair yours. They aim to fix your problem in three or four hours, certainly within the day. Owner Tony Dolan has set up the systems to provide the best replacements and the best service. Autolights’ sales manager Gavin Taylor says, “Nine times out of 10 we can put the

Tim Nicholson, an expert in plastic welding, will put lenses back together, if necessary cutting pieces to fit. Also, every light they sell is checked, especially electrically, to ensure safety. Autolights is a member of the Collision Repair Association and works in with Capricorn, an industry support system. AutoLights is open Monday to Friday at 94 Buchan Street – turn off Brougham Street at the yellow AA building, or from Colombo Street off Byron Street. TC3 Drilling Programme

Homes in TC3 that require foundation repair or rebuilding must get a building consent from the local council before repairs or rebuilding can begin. The requirements for the consent are likely to include geotechnical assessment of the land in the vicinity of the damaged house. We’ve been drilling since March 2012 and, with more than a dozen rigs on the job, we’ve put more than 2,000 holes in the ground.

Our TC3 process

Timeframes

TC3 property identified as having foundation damage

A drilling programme to investigate homes within the Canterbury Home Repair Programme managed by Fletcher EQR will be complete by March 2013. Below are the suburbs where we have completed work or have work underway (as at 20 September).

EQC geotechnical investigation (borehole or cone penetration test) undertaken on roadside berm or private property Allow 8 weeks from when EQC calls you

What happens next Once the land near your house has been tested, geotechnical and structural engineers analyse the information and design foundations specific to your property. These designs then go to the local council for building consent. Once consent is obtained, work on repairs or rebuilding can begin. Drilling also provides information that allows us to determine the full cost to repair your house, which confirms (if we haven’t already) whether you stay with EQC or are managed by your insurer.

Shake-up for school run

How will the education proposals affect your children’s school run? Let us know: news@mainlandpress.co.nz

Samantha early and Chelsea Shover

“The council will offer this programme to the schools that merge or relocate, to assist them

cars, our children do walk to school, a lot of them have after-school activities across the road at the local church, will the bus bring them back there so that that can continue afterschool as well?” Avonhead School principal Charles Levings said his school was fortunate to have a long road frontage and reserve at the back, while many parents only used the car to drop off children on rainy days. He felt for schools with small entrance spaces. Banks Avenue School principal Murray Edlin said most sites proposed for them to relocate to were easier to access, though some were on busier roads. develop policies and projects that will enhance the ability of their pupils to travel safely and sustainably between home and school,” acting unit manager business support Jarrod Bates said.

NEW Brighton Pier was transformed into a roller skating extravaganza on Friday night for the launch of the 2012 Body Festival. The evening kicked off at 5pm with the family ‘have-a-go’ session, followed at 7pm by a demonstration by the Otautahi Roller Derby League. From 8pm it was the roller disco with music from the 1980s’ disco era provided by a DJ from Mai FM. Approximately 2000 to 2500 people took part over the course of the evening, Body Festival organiser Adam Hayward said. They ranged from four to five-year-old

children to baby boomers. “There was a constant stream of people, either borrowing skates or using their own to join in the fun. It was a great success,” Heyward said. Three hundred pairs of roller skates were available for people to use free of charge. It was the 11th running of the festival, and the first time roller skating had been incorporated into the festival. “It was the first time we’d done anything that mad.” He said it would definitely be part of

future festivals, though not as the launch event again. “We like to do something different every year for the launch. In 2008, we held the world’s largest synchronised dance routine in The Square.” This year it was important to hold the launch event in the eastern suburbs, Mr Hayward said. “Councillor Peter Beck was very positive about it and very grateful that we had put it on out there.”

Feast for the senses: Colourful fruit lined up for Burwood School students.

THURSDAY september 27 2012

Earthquake rubble gets an extension at Bottle Lake

Healthy surprise: Fredge visited Burwood School, last week, to the delight of the students.

Visitor encourages children to eat their fruit and veges STUDENTS at Burwood School had a special visitor at lunchtime last Wednesday. Fredge from five plus a day went to the school to help encourage the children to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. Standing approximately 2.5 metres tall, Fredge – half fruit, half vege – had to be guided to walk. The children were very excited about their unusual visitor. They asked if he could play

soccer, and then Fredge ‘skipped the long rope’. After 25 minutes, Fredge had to go, and was mobbed by the children as he left the grounds. They have already asked when he can come back. Prior to the event students were encouraged to have at least one item of fruit or vegetable in their lunch that day, and Marshland Produce also donated free fruit for them.

Tsunami warning system to be tested again CHRISTCHURCH’S new tsunami warning system is being tested again on Sunday at 11am for three minutes. This testing is part of the Council’s twiceyearly testing of the sirens on the Sundays Daylight Saving begins and ends, Christchurch City Council’s civil defence and emergency management manager Murray Sinclair said. “It is important to remember the sirens will only be heard within a few blocks of the beach, the coastal evacuation area from Waimairi Beach to Sumner. The system is not designed to be heard inland from these areas.” When the system had first been tested two months ago, 78 per cent of those living within the tsunami evacuation zone heard the sirens, Mr Sinclair said. “This was above the international standard of 75 per cent and a great result considering

the weather conditions at the time – a southwesterly was blowing and temperatures were low meaning most residents were indoors.” The twice-yearly testing was critical to ensure the system was working efficiently. “If during the testing the sirens are reactivated for more than 10 minutes, it will no longer be a test: a tsunami will be heading for our shores and residents will need to evacuate the area.” Mr Sinclair said if residents hadn’t already, Sunday, September 30, would be a good time to develop an evacuation plan for their family and know the closest evacuation routes from their home. The council is calling for residents living within the evacuation zone to fill out an online survey at www.ccc.govt.nz/tsunami after the testing to let them know whether they heard the sirens.

More rubble to come: The Burwood Resource Recovery Park in Bottle Lake Forest received resource consent last week to continue processing earthquake rubble until 2017. The site has processed 350,000 tonnes of rubble so far and has 150,000 tonnes to go. Since the Burwood landfill reopened after the earthquakes, residents living close to the site have dealt with loud and heavy trucks, dust and

flashing lights. As conditions for the resource consent, the park will shift the Landfill Avenue formation, construct an acoustic barrier and limit operation to Monday through Saturday 5am to 9pm, excluding public holidays. Gill Cox, chairman of the resource recovery park, said he expected the sorting, recycling and disposing to finish in three to five years.

New centre manager appointed at Eastgate EASTGATE Shopping Centre has appointed Joanna Hollander as its centre manager. Eastgate is owned by NZX-listed company NPT Limited; the centre has been managed by Jones Lang La Salle since July. “We’re very pleased to have Joanna join the Eastgate team; her strong retail property experience will be a great asset for the centre. Our aim is to have Eastgate fully leased and to continue to help rebuild the sense of community in east Christchurch, which is centred around Eastgate,” Jones Lang La Salle’s national retail manager Alistair Penny said. Prior to her appointment, Ms Hollander was centre manager at Remarkables Park Town Centre for more than two years where she was responsible for 50 tenants and 24,000sqm of retail, office and service tenancies under management. A graduate of Lincoln University, Joanna has a BCom in valuation and property management. Since April, when Eastgate received its Cera certification, there has been a significant increase in leasing enquiry and activity. Lincraft, the Australian fabric, craft and home furnishing store recently signed an eight-year

Joanna Hollander

lease for a 1500sqm space and will open in mid-November. There are further leases in the pipeline with retailers keen to be located at Eastgate. “The resurgence of leasing interest in Eastgate is due, in no small measure, to former centre manager Graeme Roberts. Graeme has worked tirelessly to get the centre repaired, rebuilt and revitalised since the earthquakes began in September 2010. We are enormously grateful to his energy and commitment to Eastgate,” Mr Penny said.

Shake-up for school run

How will the education proposals affect your children’s school run? Let us know: news@mainlandpress.co.nz

Samantha early and Chelsea Shover

“The council will offer this programme to the schools that merge or relocate, to assist them

cars, our children do walk to school, a lot of them have after-school activities across the road at the local church, will the bus bring them back there so that that can continue afterschool as well?” Avonhead School principal Charles Levings said his school was fortunate to have a long road frontage and reserve at the back, while many parents only used the car to drop off children on rainy days.

Headwear for a cause: Millie O’Grady models one bandana from CanTeen’s largest annual appeal and holds another designed by CanTeen sibling Mikayla Archer. Photo: Chelsea Shover

CanTeen leader has ‘can do’ attitude Chelsea Shover

IF you see someone on the street today with a bucket, it just might be Millie O’Grady raising money for CanTeen in the final days of the Bandana Challenge. Ms O’Grady, 21, was recently re-elected as president of CanTeen’s Canterbury and West Coast chapter. For the two weeks of CanTeen’s largest annual fundraiser, she has been sorting bandanas, meeting with businesses and organisations to sell them, and helping to sell them herself in malls and on the street. In 2007, Ms O’Grady’s younger sister was diagnosed with leukaemia at age 12. It was then that she got involved with CanTeen, which supports young people with cancer and their families. Her sister was treated and made a full recovery. And Ms O’Grady – who lives in Casebrook – stayed with the organisation that had been a place for her

and her sisters to hang out and talk with others going through the same things. “It’s a really key part in young people’s cancer journeys when they get involved in CanTeen,” she said. CanTeen hosts a summer camp, a winter camp, a rest and relaxation camp, monthly activities, general meetings and workshops for its members, all of which build a supportive network. In addition to leading the CanTeen chapter, Ms O’Grady also studies primary teaching full-time at University of Canterbury and works part-time at a retail shop. “You’ve just got to be prepared to juggle CanTeen,” she said. “It’s something that I absolutely enjoy.” During the Bandana Challenge, she is especially busy. She’d try to finish off an assignment and then rush to a meeting with

doctors or a presentation for Foodstuffs or head into the CanTeen office to do some administration work. It’s important that the Bandana Challenge succeeds, as CanTeen relies entirely on fundraising efforts and public generosity. The organisation receives no direct government funding. “It’s what people know us by,” she said. For its 14th year, the Bandana Challenge had celebrity ambassadors and clothing labels design the eye-catching headwear. The bandanas have been sold since September 14 and will be on sale until Sunday. Ms O’Grady said the money raised through the challenge would help fund educational workshops for CanTeen members, like leadership workshops to equip them to head CanTeen or develop leadership in other areas of their lives.

THURSDAY SepTembeR Sep 27 2012 Mind games: Hannah McKeenan, left, and Melanie Aitken try to relax their brains enough to send the Brain Ball to the other’s side of the tube while Apoorva Patelkhana looks on. The three girls are part of Riccarton Primary’s Business Brains club.

Tips for Riccarton residents to beat burglary around and this is a particular problem with the student community,” Mr Brunton said. To reduce the risk of a burglary, the police recommend: locking doors and windows, recording the serial numbers of expensive electronic items, photographing electronics and other valuables, keeping valuables out of sight, installing an alarm system, getting security lights fitted and keeping your house secure while you are in the garden or yard. A good way of combatting burglars is to get to know your neighbours by joining a Neighbourhood Support Group. A Neighbourhood Support Group meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday, October 3, at the Riccarton Baptist church hall on Peverel St. Prevention advice will be given and residents can bring along their valuables for security marking. If you have any information about criminal activity you can give that information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Ready, set, relax Chelsea Shover

RICCARTON Primary students had the chance last week to compete in an unusual challenge. Science Alive lent the school a Brain Ball, a $US25,000 machine that tracks brain waves to measure relaxation. At morning tea, students swarmed round the table where the Brain Ball was set up as two pupils sat down on either side of the clear tube and strapped on headbands equipped with brain monitors. The onlookers hushed each other. The ball wavered in the middle and slowly travelled away from a student whose alpha and theta brain waves indicated she was in deeper relaxation. Competitive relaxation is tricky precisely because reacting to progress – whether the ball is rolling towards you or your opponent – immediately makes you start to lose. Most play with their foreheads against the table.

Deputy principal Andrew Wilkinson said a group of Business Brains – 10 entrepreneurial students – have been holding fundraisers like bake sales, mufti days and an upcoming calendar sale. “The big goal is we’re trying to get more people on camps and outdoors,” Mr Wilkinson said. The Business Brains borrowed the machine from Science Alive to use as a fundraiser. At morning tea, lunch and an after-school teachers’ competition, teachers, students and parents chipped in 50 cents per turn. The Brain Ball has been used to help people manage and monitor stress levels after traumatic experiences like domestic violence, and it can also be useful in teaching relaxation techniques in school. Riccarton Primary is the first school in Christchurch to borrow the machine.

UNTIL last week, Allenvale School hadn’t had a sports day since QEII Stadium closed. Then the New Zealand Institute of Sport (NZIS) decided to host a Paralympics at Middleton Park for the 130 pupils at the special school. Spread out around the park, dressed in different colors to represent different countries, Allenvale students competed in hurdles, running races, standing long jump, shot put and discus throws and an obstacle course. NZIS students made the events inclusive for all abilities, adapting the track events, modifying the obstacle course, so pupils in wheelchairs could do it, and using quoits for the discus throw. POLICE in the Riccarton West area are warning residents to remain vigilant after some recent burglaries in the area. Since September 1, there have been five burglaries in the area, in Dallas Street, Maxwell St, Rattray St and Peverel St. This increase follows a six-week period where there were no burglaries in Riccarton West. Two occurred during the day and three occurred at night with the majority occurring on a week day. Laptop computers have been the main item stolen. “Police are interested in any suspicious activity in the area in recent times, particularly if anyone has seen a person of interest, described as a male New Zealand European in his early 30s, six foot tall with long hair pulled back, wearing dark clothing,” Senior Constable Dave Brunton said. The Riccarton Neighbourhood Policing Team is encouraging residents to be vigilant and step up their prevention and security. “Some residents are still leaving houses unlocked or insecure and valuables lying

said the NZIS helped with sports days in past years, but this was the first time the institute had hosted the sports day at their grounds. Rebecca Logan, a tutor at The New Zealand Institute of Sport, said 17-year-old students studying level three in the youth guarantee have to organise an event as part of their programme requirements. She suggested organising the sports day for Allenvale, and her students responded enthusiastically. Other students from the institute also helped. The day began with an opening ceremony and closed with a medals ceremony. First, second and third place in the events won gold, silver and bronze, and all students received medals for participating.

Great experience for Rippa medal winners

Artist returns to Christchurch roots Chelsea Shover

THE Paparoa Street School Rippa Rugby team won bronze medals representing Canterbury at the national championships in Wellington last week. The competition, modelled after the ITM Cup, whittled down a national pool of about 600 teams to 20 provincial teams competing in the championships. The Paparoa St team won six of their seven tournament games. Facing Southland to determine third and fourth place, Paparoa St won, 50 points to 10. A faster game than touch rugby, Rippa Rugby has players rip a belt instead of making a tackle. Coach Michael Keats said some of his team of five boys and five girls were mostly new to rugby. All played other sports, but some had just started playing Rippa in term two. Mr Keats said his players received star treatment during the tournament, which

covered transportation, lodging, food and some entertainment for the 20 teams involved. “They were treated a bit like the All Blacks,” he said. In fact, the team met and took photos with the All Blacks. “It was just an amazing experience for the kids,” Mr Keats said.

FREDERICKA Walker-Murray will return to Selwyn House School to exhibit her paintings in Christchurch for the first time this weekend. “I really wanted to come back to Christchurch,” Ms Walker-Murray, who was born in North Canterbury and now lives in Wellington, said. “Selwyn House is where I first got my interest in art.” Walker-Murray describes her oil paintings as post-expressionist. Though she did bachelors and masters degrees in science, Walker-Murray has been painting for years. While living in Geneva with her husband, who is a World Trade Organisation Ambassador, she studied with Maestro JeanPierre Mello. “Fredericka has a gift and has produced a body of excellent and individual work. I believe she has the innovative style which will continue to gather momentum as her work becomes more widely known,” Mr Mello said. Walker-Murray’s paintings will be on display and for sale in the Selwyn House School Atrium on Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 4pm. Being back at her old school, she will charge lower prices than usual, she said.

Age Concern to host Positive Ageing Expo Chelsea Shover

AGE Concern Canterbury will host its sixth Positive Ageing Expo at Papanui High School on October 1 to celebrate International Day of Older Persons. “It’s not just for old people,” expo organiser Yvonne Palmer said, adding that the event would showcase health, safety and lifestyle information relevant to children, grandchildren or ageing individuals themselves. From 10am until 2.30pm, attendees can browse over 100 exhibits, enjoy musical entertainment, watch demonstrations, drink

free tea and coffee and participate in tai chi and other low-impact exercises. Ms Palmer said Bin Inn will put on a glutenfree cooking demonstration. Rockers of Ages Choir and Val of VJs will perform. Blood pressure checks and other health readings will be available. Safety is the theme of many exhibits, from the New Zealand Survivors South Island’s evacuation kits to Hurunui Alcohol-wise to a Plunket booth on car seats. Ms Palmer said it was vital for grandparents to be aware of the

need for car seats, as younger grandchildren may try to persuade them to be allowed to sit in the front seat before reaching the recommended height of 148cm. Kiwi Outdoor Resilience Education will be among the exhibits highlighting activities to do with grandchildren. The Botanical Gardens Caterpillar will be on hand to transport visitors from the school gates to exhibit halls, and on-site parking will be improved. Last year, nearly 3000 people attended the expo.
