COVER ARTIST: Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer lived a life where he allowed nothing to come between him and his art. A quiet person, observant and reserved, Homer often preferred the company of working people and the fisherfolk who populated many of his famous scenes. A calm and serious man, he could observe scenes in long, probing silence to find their truest nature and genuine emotions. Homer was creating a new American art, independent from the European conventions of the day, and making iconic paintings that showed a new and often heroic American spirit.

Born in 1836 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Homer began in his twenties as a commercial illustrator for Harper’s Weekly and later served as their war artist during the Civil War, sketching scenes at the front lines. Homer traveled for several years, painting hunters in the Quebec forests, native fishermen in the Bahamas and Florida, and children playing in coastal scenes. Homer spent a year in the small English town of Cullercoats on the North Sea Coast, captivated by the ocean storms, rough waves, and the sturdy fishing community in their struggles against the sea.

In 1883, Homer moved to a family compound in Prout’s Neck, Maine, most notable for its rocky ocean frontage, the sound of the waves, and a perfect solitude. Here Homer would live the rest of his life, painting his most famous and iconic works in isolation and quietude. Homer jealously guarded his isolation. The privacy and silence allowed him to paint the great themes of his career: the struggle of people against the sea and the relationship of

Winslow Homer with “The Gulf Stream” in his studio at Prouts Neck,1899, Gelatin silver print, unidentified photographer. It is believed to be the only photograph of Homer working on a painting.

fragile, transient human life to the timelessness of nature.

The Portland Museum of Art purchased the Prout’s Neck property in 2006 and offers tours of the Winslow Homer Studio.

The cover art for this year’s guide, “Beach Scene,” is in the permanent collection of Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain.

“Homer is in a place by himself as the most original and one of the strongest of American painters.” The New York Evening Post

Dear friends:

Welcome to the State of Maine a State of Art, a State of Beauty

Suzanne and I are incredibly proud and pleased to present the 2025 Tour of Maine Art and our 25th-anniversary edition. Inside these pages, you will find sociable gallery openings in the evening air, art being created in the studio, and impressive exhibitions happening up and down the coast. You will also discover new Maine art that has just been created, patiently waiting to be seen by you. Organized maps and contact information make finding and visiting studios and galleries easy.

Our cover art, “Beach Scene,” was painted in 1869 by Winslow Homer. It is a charming painting with children, capturing the joy of the moment and movement of the sea. Other paintings by Homer depicted the courage and grit of Yankee sailors and fishermen in their struggles against the harsh North Sea. His paintings helped define a character portrait of resilient New Englanders and their rugged fortitude in adversity.

Maine art is one of Maine’s best products. When you hang Maine art in your home, wonderful things happen. You add memories, beauty, and value to your home. Your purchase goes directly to the artist, enabling them to support their family and community and allow new art to be created. You introduce your family to art.

You can become a Maine art collector with your first painting. Your purchase also includes a new relationship with an artist or gallerist, and usually a good story.

Suzanne and I hope your tour is rewarding and that our publication is your essential guide to discovering new Maine art.

Inspired by Edward Harrison’s Masks of the Universe, the work by artists Gregg Harper, William Hessian, Eva Rose Goetz, and Abbeth Russell (pictured) explored humanity’s evolving understanding of the cosmos. Originally built to provide live/work space for older artists, Oak Street Lofts has designed a beautiful lobby gallery space. The UMVA, founded in 1975, is a non-profit organization that promotes and advocates for the visual arts, artists, and all arts supporters.

Moss Galleries: 20 Years of Championing Maine’s Legacy in American Art

With more than two decades of experience in the contemporary art markets, Moss Galleries stands as a cornerstone of Maine’s vibrant art scene. Under the direction of founder Elizabeth Moss—an art advisor certified by the Appraisers Association of America—the gallery has become a trusted destination for collectors, curators, and enthusiasts seeking meaningful connections to fine art.

Representing both emerging and established artists, Moss Galleries was named one of Blouin ArtInfo’s 500 Best Galleries in North America and was a finalist for the 2013 Maine Family Business Awards. Moss Galleries’s exhibitions have reached far beyond Maine, appearing at prestigious venues such as New York’s 28th Street Armory, Boston’s AD20/21 Cyclorama, and in the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program.

Moss also serves as the founding Executive Director of the Maine Museum of Photographic Arts and is active in the Women’s Executive Forum, continuing her leadership in the arts across multiple platforms. The gallery’s works are featured in public and private collections across the U.S., Europe and Asia—including L.L. Bean, Acadia Insurance, and MaineGeneral Hospital.

At Moss Galleries, art is not just displayed—it’s a conversation. Visitors are welcomed into a friendly, educational environment that celebrates Maine’s legacy as a muse to greats like Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keefe, and the current superstar of the international art world Lynne Drexler. Today, the gallery proudly supports a new generation of artists whose work resonates nationally and internationally. The Maine Art Gallery and Maine Farmland Trust collaborate on a Joseph Fiore retrospective

Joseph Fiore (1925-2008) was a widely respected artist and active member of the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasett during the 1960s and ‘70s. In celebration of the 100th year of his birth, the gallery is partnering with Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) on an exclusive and overdue major retrospective, “Fiore at 100: Maine Observed.” The show runs June 19 to Aug. 24, with an opening reception on June 21 and will be enhanced by several related events.

A catalogue with an appreciation by art writer Suzette McAvoy will accompany the show.

The exhibition is curated by distinguished Maine watercolorist David Dewey, who sees “Fiore At 100, Maine Observed,” as a celebration of an artist whose two creative modes — representation and abstraction — have always run parallel with one another. These approaches merged together and nourished one another as his career developed, enriching our appreciation of the Maine landscape and its history.

Joseph Fiore was born in Cleveland, Ohio, where his father was a founding member of the Cleveland Symphony. He studied at Black Mountain College under Josef Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky and Willem de Kooning. He was a member of the 10th Street art scene in New York City in the late ’50s and ’60s, showing alongside the likes of Alex Katz, Lois Dodd, and Bernard Langlais. These and other artists showed in the celebrated summer exhibitions mounted in the first decade of the Maine Art Gallery.

Fiore was an avid supporter of Maine Farmland Trust. The works on loan to the Maine Art Gallery were donated to the Trust by the artist’s estate in honor of his longstanding commitment to the organization and its history of programs combining art and environment. Sales of the work will benefit both the Maine Farmland Trust and the Maine Art Gallery.

A nonprofit organization since 1958, the Maine Art Gallery, located at 15 Warren St., Wiscasset, is dedicated to the advancement and preservation of the visual, fine and applied arts through exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations and educational programs for children and adults. More information can be found at maineartgallerywiscasset.org and on Facebook at Maine Art Gallery Wiscasset.

Sylvia Murdock’s current works are on view at her coastal Port Clyde Gallery. Sylvia has been painting for over 40 years, primarily in watercolor, but also with egg tempera. Murdock has exhibited in galleries and museums from Searsport to Philadelphia, but it’s the simplicity and clarity of coastal Maine that has left a lasting impression on Murdock and her work.

UMVA Dark Skies Exhibit: Yearlong Effort Yields Impressive Results

The recent Union of Maine Visual Arts (UMVA) Dark Skies exhibition, in partnership with Belfast’s Waterfall Arts and Dark Sky Maine, was by all measures a tremendous success.

Not only did the exhibit gather a sizable crowd of roughly 240 people at the opening and 800 visitors overall during its six week run, it also gave UMVA a healthy dose of exposure in media, ranging from newspapers such as The Portland Press Herald; community websites, such as New England Living; and local TV stations, such as News Center Maine in Portland.

Amy Tingle, program director at Waterfall Arts, commented that it was a wonderful melding of art and science. In the last week of the exhibit, WABI Bangor News visited the Dark Skies exhibition and spoke to Kathleen Dervereux, Waterfall Arts (WFA) arts

marketing manager, who said, “There’s a lot of folks who visited for just the science aspect of the show and they’ve left with a greater appreciation for art and then of course those who come looking for really awesome art to look at, they’ve learned more about the science of dark skies. So, it’s really cool to see that crossbreeding of interests and passions.”

Complimentary Dark Skies programming included guest speakers such as Nancy Hathaway of Dark Sky Maine; Elizabeth Dickerson of the popular Maine Aurora Borealis Watch Facebook group; a presentation by John Meader of Northern Sky Planetarium with Serena Sanborn of Waterville Creates about the need to preserve and cherish dark skies and reduce light pollution for the health of the ecosystem; and "Wilfred Buck," a hybrid documentary film that follows the life of a charismatic and irreverent Cree

elder who overcame a harrowing history by reclaiming ancestral star knowledge and ceremony, shown at the Belfast Public Library.

Over a year of planning went into the exhibition and related events. It all began at a brainstorming session of possible 2025 exhibition themes that was held at a midcoast downeast chapter meeting. Fortuitously, Arlene Jurewicz-Leighton had just come from a Dark Skies meeting, and suggested the Dark Skies theme. It immediately appealed to Liv Kristin Robinson (with many decades of co-curating and organizing art exhibitions in Midcoast Maine) and Emily Sabino, a more recent active organizer of exhibitions at UMVA and beyond.

After several meetings, the goals of the show became clear: 1) to create a professionally curated, well-attended exhibition that gets UMVA and its Artists into the News; 2) to provide an opportunity for emerging UMVA artists to exhibit alongside well known Artists; and 3) to

raise awareness of the necessity of night time darkness and reducing light pollution.

To accomplish these goals, the organizers set out to do the following: 1) Organize a juried call, open to all UMVA members state wide, to submit dark sky themed work. 2) Invite several well-known Maine artists, including Katherine Bradford, Jane Dahmen, Frances Hynes, and Linden Frederick, among others, whose dark skies-themed work could expand the range of the show’s appeal among art enthusiasts. 3) Partner with Waterfall Arts, Dark Sky Maine and other popular environmental groups for increased interest from media outlets.

The exhibit and programming, along with excellent publicity efforts by UMVA’s own Ann Tracy and the WFA staff, resulted in an impressive amount of media attention for UMVA, artists and the dark skies cause. And equally important, a growing bond of affection and appreciation among all who were involved in organizing the project.

Nationally-renowned photographer Jim Nickelson views the Dark Skies exhibit, where his work is on display. Presented by Belfast’s Waterfall Arts in collaboration with Dark Sky Maine and the Union of Maine Visual Artists (UMVA), Dark Skies showcased work from more than 30 artists selected by jurors Nancy Hathaway (President and Co-founder of Dark Sky Maine), and UMVA members Liv Kristin Robinson, Emily Sabino, and Arlene Jurewicz Leighton.

Maxwell Nolin is an award-winning portrait and figurative painter with a genuine desire to capture the true essence of his subjects. His goal is to transcend the superficial and convey unique personality and spirit in every portrait he creates. His artistic journey has taken him to places like Florence, Italy, where he studied classical painting at The Florence Academy of Art, and he has received private instruction and mentoring from renowned artists. His studio is on 33 Main Street in Belfast.

WILLIAM IRVINE

Oh say, poet, what is it that you do? – I praise. But what of the deadly and monstrous, how do you endure all this, how do you take it in? – I praise.

But the nameless, the anonymous, how, despite it all, do you keep calling to them, poet? – I praise. Where does it come from, your claim to be true in every guise and in each mask? – I praise.

And that the stillness and turbulence know you like star and storm?

Translated by

– Because I praise.
