COVER ARTIST: BEATRICE WHITNEY VAN NESS

Beatrice Whitney Van Ness (1988-1981) received her formal art education from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) in Boston, where she studied with Impressionists Frank Benson and Edmund Tarbell. It was during this time that she began developing her own Impressionist style with single nude figures rendered in oil paints. This early work would later give way to portrayals of families and small groups, with a special focus on the qualities of light.

In 1910, Van Ness joined the faculty of SMFA after further study with Ogunquit Art Association founder Charles Woodbury, who would become a longtime mentor. Van Ness went on to found the art department of the Beaver County Day School near Boston, where she would deepen her study of arts education, a lifelong pursuit that led to the establishment of many of the first arts education programs in public schools.

In 1915, Van Ness married Carl N. Van Ness, beginning a period of summering in Ogunquit and North Haven, Maine, where she would refine her focus on capturing the special qualities of intense, golden summer sunlight on her painting subjects.

The cover painting Summer Sunlight (1936) depicts a domestic scene, likely painted while summering in Bartlett Harbor, North Haven. The painting depicts, from left to right, her neighbor, her eldest daughter, and her nephew against a backdrop of dunes and the ocean. The focus of the work, however, is the sunlight which strikes through the scene diagonally, lending a brilliant, penetrating warmth and shadow to the composition.

Van Ness would continue to explore the qualities of light for the rest of her life. She passed away in Massachusettes at age 91, still an active painter. Her work is held by the National Academy of Design and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Beaver County Day School founded the Beatrice Van Ness Society in memory of her commitment to art in public schools.

“Summer Sunlight” resides at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, D.C., the first major museum in the world solely dedicated to championing women through the arts.

Welcome to the 2024 Tour of Maine Art

Suzanne and I are delighted to unveil the latest in Maine art and to share with you the latest artistic output from one of the world’s coolest art scenes.

Be prepared to be impressed. Maine has a two hundred year old standing with famous American artists of note. The lovely slanting light, a grand and rugged coastline dotted with thousands of islands, and a rare solitude attracted the finest painters as the word of Maine spread.

Discovering Maine’s art today is an experience just waiting for you.

There are two great ways to see galleries and studios and buy Maine art.

First, the owners of art galleries invest years with their gallery artists and are very knowledgeable and involved with their art. The artists are as carefully selected as the art being shown on gallery walls. The gallerist is always happy to explain background and provenance and help you aquire the best work of art.

Second, artist studios mainly show their own work. A visit can be intimate and informative. As a new collector, you are creating a bond with Maine art, a personal relationship with an artist, and an engaging story to tell of your new art.

When you take home Maine art everyone wins. Your home becomes more artful, and you have added beauty and value to your home and estate. Your purchase supports galleries, which support artists directly. It gives studio artists the means to buy supplies to make new art, and to support their family and their communities.

Enjoy your Tour and best wishes on your search for Maine art.

Minavivana appeared to be about 50 years of age, he was well over 6' in height and had in his countenance an indescribable mixture of good and evil.

Looking steadfastly at me, he began his speech: “Englishman, although you have conquered the French, you have not conquered us! We are not your slaves. These lakes, these woods, these mountains were left to us by our ancestors. They are our inheritance; and we will part with them to none.”

Maine, a state of beauty, a state of art

Collect Maine Art

ank you so much for using Maine Gallery + Studio Guide. We hope your visit to Maine makes special memories and leads you to new discoveries.

Being a helpful guide to your purchase of Maine art is our rst and most lo y goal. Here are a few reasons why taking home Maine art is much more than a simple purchase: It adds beauty and value and to your home for years; payment goes directly to a Maine artist and not an outside corporation; the purchase allows an artist to create new art and support their family; and you have an interesting story to tell that also bene ts a gallery, a studio, and your family home.

And you can start your Maine art collection with a single painting.

ABIGAIL DEVILLE IN THE FULLNESS OF TIME

June 29 through November 3, 2024

Organized by the Bronx Museum in coordination with the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, In the Fullness of Time features the work of artist Abigail DeVille. With a humanizing lens, DeVille explores how marginalized communities persevere through their search for renewal and happiness as they migrate to new places that become sanctuaries. She uses found materials and detritus to unearth forgotten narratives of those whose contributions have been erased throughout history. This exhibition will feature large-scale installations and sculptural works that are part of her “Libertas” series, as well as a newly created piece related to Bowdoin College’s history. It will also include rarely seen works that examine familial and ancestral experiences as they relate to the complex notion of freedom.
