ALBANY IS A WELCOMING CROSSROADS! The new “I-87 Travelers Torah” transforms our medium-size Jewish community into a meeting-point and welcome center for weary Thruway travelers that connects us with major regional communities.

Mr. Bruce Lorence, Baruch Binyamin ben Levi HaLevi, dedicated this second Torah to Maimonides in memory of his great-uncle Harry J. Rosenson (1884-1926), a prominent civic leader and NYC Asst. Corporation Counsel, a founder and President of Williamsburg’s Y.M.H.A from 1916 until his untimely death at age 42.

Bruce shared his Mitzvah by inviting Jewish tourists and travelers passing through the Capital Region to sponsor letters in this “Traveler’s Torah” scroll. Nearly 1,000 people already signed-up in this special Torah!

The “I-87 Travelers’ Torah” broadens our base as a convenient stop-over between New York City & Montreal, Boston and Toronto, offering hundreds of travelers kosher opportunities and a Minyan oasis. Beyond the Torah inscriptions, it raises awareness among travelers that Albany is more than just a sign on the Thruway!

We launched this project with Montreal’s Jewish Leadership and the Israeli Consul, the Honorable Joel Lion, and it is being promoted in Montreal synagogues, communal newsletters and the Canadian Jewish News.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Passover proclamation also praised Maimonides’ Thruway hospitality.

Instead of rushing off after Minyan in Albany to get back on the road, some travelers extend their stopover to enjoy local sightseeing. We are also receiving inquiries about inter-city Bar-mitzvahs and Simchas, and already hosted several family simchas. We hosted traveling Jewish youth groups and touring day camps headed to Cooperstown, Saratoga & Great Escape.

We all rejoice with the “I-87 Travelers’ Torah” and its continued intercommunal cross-pollination and Ahavas-Yisrael connections.
