SIGNS OF A GOOD YEAR AHEAD 7TH GRADE YAHADUS LINES UP These kindergarteners IN TIME FOR YOM-KIPPUR

hold a “Simanin Apple” they made before Rosh Hashanah with traditional “signs” for a good year: apple in honey, the seeds of a pomegranate, head of a fish… May all the signs point in the right direction, and may we all be blessed with a wonderful year ahead. At Maimonides, its looking good already and we are looking forward to a great year ahead!

ODD AND EVEN NUMBERS On Yom Kippur this weekend many will be more attuned to page numbers than any other day of the year. Some may remember when Megama played their “I Got the Prayerbook Blues” song, many years ago at the Albany JCC. Our first graders with Ms. Arika Ford happened to learn all about odd and even numbers this week. They cut out numbers from newspaper grocery circulars to paste on odd or even sides of their page as appropriate. Some Machzorim have Hebrew-English pages listed as separate numbers and some have them listed as two sides of the same page number.

Morah Dini and the 7th graders learned this week in Yahadus curriculum all about the Avodah (the special service in the Temple which is remembered in the Musaf Avodah prayers) on Yom-Kippur. Perfect timing!

NO WASTE, USE EVERYTHING Mrs. Ramsay’s class learned how Native Americans made the most of their resources. Plains Indians hunted buffalo but used every part of the animal, for food and clothing, fuel and soap, utensils and threads, even stuffing for pillows —nothing went to waste. This can be a message for us as well, to maximize what we already have and make good use of it and ty to not let things go waste. It’s not only about things and stuff, its even about utilizing our time and our minds!

JEWISH GIRLS UNITE – INTERSCHOOL EVENT Girls in grades 3-7 participated in a JGU interschool event with schools across the country. They learned a song about Chana’s bravery and how to turn a worry into a wish. But what was most impressive is how our students reacted to a situation: There were technical issues with the technology on our end, but our kids were super patient and extremely well behaved. Sophia held up the phone for all to listen. We’re proud of them!

This week’s MC newsletter is sponsored in loving memory of

Dr. Bernie Teitelman Yartzeit: Yom Kippur by Joyce and the Teitelman and Lew families

THE MOSES IN ME SONG “8th Day” has a new song titled “Moses in Me” so Rabbi Shmuly printed the song lyrics, as well as the Talmud and Tanya texts the song is based on, for students to appreciate where the song is coming from and to see how songwriters use inspiration for their own adapted interpretation in song form. This also gives a modern sense of how the old “Piyutim”the Machzor’s liturgical poems were creatively and poetically written with many hidden references to earlier texts & layers of meaning.

ELIANA SOHN IN YU’S TORAH2GO Eliana Sohn, who taught at Maimonides and went to school here as a child, was recently published in YU’s “Torah-To-Go” publication. Her article was “Menucha: The Gift of all Gifts”.
