Although the sitting Ōhariu MP Greg O’Connor is holding an election night majority of 1,427 votes, he is waiting to see what will happen once special votes are counted.

The Labour MP tallied 14,453 votes when counting was completed late on election day, while National’s Nicola Willis attracted 13,026 votes.

“I will be relieved when the special votes are in,” Greg told the “Independent Herald”.

“I expect there will be some change when the specials arrive.

“I hope my margin on the night will carry me through.

“I will be pleased when the declaration is made [due on 3 November]. I will rest easy then.”

Greg said he had received a call from Nicola Willis “who has conceded that on the face of it, it looks like I have carried the day.”

This is the third time Greg has topped the poll in Ōhariu on election night.

In 2017 he defeated National list MP Brett Hudson, marking the beginning of his Parliamentary career.

On election night he held a lead of around just 500 votes in 2017 but ended with a majority of 1,051 after special votes were counted.

When Greg confirmed be was standing on 1 February 2017 it was to challenge the long-serving incumbent Peter Dunne of United Future. However Peter withdrew shortly before the election.

Greg made no race of it during the 2020 general election and was returned as Ōhariu’s MP with a margin of 11,961

“We are back to where we were in 2017,” he notes.

One of Greg’s hallmarks as a local MP is his frequent attendance at community events and the work he has done for the electorate and its people.

“I have always prided myself for my ground game,” he says.

“That’s what I would like to think carried the day.”

A lot of the work he has done for the Ōhariu electorate has been for individuals.

Some has been for the community however.

“The latest is getting a post box for Khandallah.

“I’ve been working with Foodstuffs and New Zealand Post on this.”

The new post box was due to be placed in New World Khandallah last week.

Election day was the culmination of an intense period of electioneering for Greg.

“I’ve knocked on thousands of doors.

“I’ve worn out two pairs of shoes and the heels on my dress boots need work.”

However the door knocking is something he enjoys and finds “quite compelling”.

“When I first came into politics I did not think I would like the door knocking,” he says.

“But I really do.

“Often I would only stop

when it got too dark.”

This year he has also noticed a significant difference compared to door knocking pre-Covid.

“Pre-Covid there wasn’t much point in door knocking during the [working] week.

“Post-Covid a lot more people are working from home, making door knocking more useful,” he says.

Greg is currently Parlia-

ment’s Deputy Speaker, a role he has held since 25 August 2022 and one he has found rewarding.

“It has really enhanced my understanding of the Parliamentary process in a way that would take a long time to understand otherwise,” he says.

With the change of government, his Deputy Speaker role is unlikely to continue however.

Head girl wins major award

Quiz night Cardinal McKeefry School in Wilton is running a quiz night in the school hall from 7 to 9:30pm on Thursday 26 October.

Newlands College head girl Qiana Ram has just won a major national award.

She was presented the Supreme Trailblazer Award at the 2023 GirlBoss Awards gala evening at Auckland’s Northern Club on 12 October.

Qiana won the Trailblazer Award as the lead organiser for the highly successful TEDx Youth@Paparangi talks evening.

Held at the Newlands College school hall on 23 August, this evening featured speeches by rangatahi from across Aotearoa presenting inspiring speeches on issues they are passionate about.

“This year it was such a successful event,” Qiana says.

The six speakers presented messages that were all about “defying stereotypes and creating change in their communities.

“It was such an awesome thing to see so many people inspired.”

Following each speech of around 10 minutes there was a time for questions and answers.

As well as the talks there was also a variety of entertainment at the evening, including hip hop dancing and “some amazing singers from our community”.

Qiana began TEDx Youth@ Paparangi because “I wanted to create a platform for everyone out there – a genuine platform designed for people to express themselves.”

So she brought together “young innovators, thinkers and change-makers from all different backgrounds.”

The first event, held last year, was a much smaller one than this year’s.

Following this year’s successful talks event, Qiana is now looking to expand it to even greater

“Each speaker embodies the essence of pushing boundaries and daring to imagine a brighter future.”

Qiana was on a leadership course in Tonga when she received a phone call that was to let her know she had won an award.

Because the reception in Tonga was not good, she was not able to get the message.

However when she read her emails and received the one with the announcement “my jaw just dropped,” she says.

“I got quite emotional.”

That, Qiana says, was because the award recognised that “my idea and my purpose of getting

youth to speak .. brings value to people”.

She was happy and joyful “that this award could bring more opportunities to hear youth voices, which should be heard a lot more.

“I feel very humble and proud of my group and the fact that it [the TEDx talks evening] actually happened.”

GirlBoss NZ was founded in 2015 by social entrepreneur and women’s rights activist Alexia Hilbertidou.

GirlBoss encourages young women to dream big and consider fields in which they are under-represented such as STEM, business and governance – areas in which they can create large scale change which benefits everyone in the country.

GirlBoss is New Zealand’s largest young women network with 17,500 members nationwide.

The year’s GirlBoss awards saw

11 young women recognised, three of them from the Wellington region.

“We had over 530 nominations from Paihia to Invercargill, and it was extremely difficult for the judges to pick,” Alexia says.

“The acceptance rate was 2%, making The GirlBoss Awards the most competitive award scheme in the country.

“We must recognise the contribution of our young women and encourage them to keep striving and pushing for positive change, not only for themselves but for their community, country and the world.”

What the young women who received awards this year have achieved is remarkable, Alexia says.

“I cannot wait to see what they do next, and I know everyone involved is looking forward to celebrating their achievements.”

Karori Arts and Crafts is running a one day workshop on how to make knitted gnomes, particularly for Christmas.

Susan Hagedorn will be the presenter at the workshup which runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm on Saturday 25 November at Karori Arts and Crafts Centre, 7 Beauchamp Street. Suitable for knitters with some experience knitting in the round, this workshop knits and assembles a gnome complete with embellishments or embroidery or both.

A community workshop learning and sharing about actions people can take on climate change is taking place in Ngaio.

Gardens Magic returning

Wellington’s hugly popular Gardens Magic will return to the Botanic Gardens in January.

Gardens Magic will see a series of concerts at the Botanic Gardens ki Paekākā Soundshell between 9 and 28 January.

These concerts will feature the sounds of Wellington’s vivacious talent.

Along with the concerts there will be evening light displays at the Botanic Gardens.

During the day, families can enjoy the Kids

Garden Trail and Discovery Days.

This year’s Gardens Magic attracted thousands of Wellingtonians as well as visitors to the capital.

Wellington City Council has asked performers to submit applications to be involved in the Gardens Magic concerts, and these applications have now closed.

The council will be considering these applications and putting together a programme, which will be available on the council’s website, https://wellington.govt. nz/news-and-events/events-and-festivals/ gardens-magic.

They can easily afford to halve the prices. It’s time for action not words.

The supermarkets throw out a lot of produce. I think they could re-use. It seems ridiculous they aren’t proactive by giving the wastage to locals who are struggling.

I buy frozen vegetables.

They need to have a conscience with all the profit they are making.

As soon as an overseas competitor enters the market I will be boycotting the locals.

The ‘big boys’ need to show some humanity.

I’ve recently been made redundant so budgeting is the first priority. There’s no reason why they can’t lower basics like fruit and vegetables.

We need to buy direct from the farmer, miss out the suppliers.

Bike plays unusual part on stage Award-winning actor Helen Moulder shares the stage with an unusual partner – a bicycle – in her latest solo play at Circa Theatre.

Although she lives in Nelson, Helen is often in Wellington and when she is she lives in Johnsonville.

She is certainly no stranger to the northern

suburbs, having also lived in both Ngaio and Khandallah.

“I’m used to working alone on stage, but this time I share the space with an inanimate object,” says Helen.

“The bicycle starts on stage before I do. It becomes more significant as the play goes on and is almost a character in itself.”

Helen, who plays five characters aged from 11 to 93, and her Australian collaborator Sue Rider are used to challenges.

“The Bicycle & the Butcher’s Daughter” is the fourth play they have written together despite living in separate countries.

Helen will perform the play at Circa Two from 25 October to 11 November. The shows will begin at 7:30pm from Tuesday to Saturday and at 4:30pm on Sunday.

In addition to the play, Helen and Sue have also produced a book containing their four plays, and the new book will be launched on the opening night of “The Bicycle & the Butcher’s Daughter”, 25 October.

“It’s quite a funny play,” Helen says.

“There are plenty of laughs, but there are also some serious provocations around eating meat, connecting with family, and acceptance of what matters in a world of shifting parameters.

When the show has been performed until now “the response has been extraordinary,” Helen says.

“I chat with people afterwards, and often they talk about the play’s message of grace under pressure in a changing world.”

It’s a theme Sue and Helen have taken to heart in writing and in life and both artists are thrilled to be finally bringing the play to Wellington.

“Circa is like our home,” says Sue. “All of our other plays have been performed there.”

“I’m very excited that Sue is coming from Brisbane for the show,” Helen adds.

Helen has been working in theatre, television and film for more than 40 years in the UK, New Zealand and Australia.

She is a founding member of the New Zealand women’s comedy troupe Hens’ Teeth with her fading opera singing character, Cynthia Fortitude.

Helen’s film and television credits include “Close to Home”, “Pictures”, “Country GP”, “Erebus – the Aftermath”, “Abberation”, “The Dark Knight”, “Rest for the Wicked” and “Food for Thought”.

She has twice won Actress of the Year in the Wellington Theatre Awards. Helen is a patron of the Nelson Historic Theatre Trust and an honorary vice-president of the Nelson Musical Theatre.

Team in green arrives Metlink has welcomed eight Warranted Transport Officers (WTOs) to its public transport network for the first time to support passengers with their journeys.

The WTOs began working on Metlink buses, trains, and ferries, and at stops, stations, and wharves on 16 October.

Dubbed the “team in green” after their distinctive green uniforms, Greater Wellington Transport Chair Thomas Nash defines their primary role as network ambassadors.

“The role of our team in green is first and foremost to be a friendly face and helping hand with fares and ticketing.

“They can also issue fines for people who are deliberately not paying their fare,” Cr Nash says.

“The team in green are there to engage with people, to educate people and to encourage people. Enforcement action

is there as a last resort,” Cr Nash adds.

WTOs have been delegated the ability to issue infringement notices up to $150 under the Land Transport Amendment Act 2017.

Metlink Group Manager Samantha Gain says the WTOs will complement the work of frontline teams.

“Our drivers and onboard staff all perform essential roles of their own, including ensuring passenger safety and helping them during their journey,” Ms Gain says.

“The team in green can also advise passengers on their best fare and help visitors to the Wellington region navigate the network.”

Politics & Property? YIP! Hey Everyone! With the great rugby matches, Paul Coll taking the US open, the elections, weather, it has been quite a week. Firstly, a congratulations to our Local MP Greg O’Connor on his re-election. Regardless of your political position, it was a very tough campaign and full credit to Greg and his team’s efforts on getting the win. Although there are still around 20% of votes to be considered and polls are likely to change a little bit, but it is clear we will have significant political change. So how can this affect the local property market? Here are a few things to consider.

• Property Value: Historically data shows that across the last 11 elections, house prices in Wellington had outperformed the national average by 3.3 percentage points when Labour was elected and fell behind by 4.4 percentage points when National was elected. This is likely due to the job changes and Wellington being a bit more of a ‘left’ city.

• Public Sector Jobs: The big one will be the promise to cut $600m from public spending, this will be mainly job cuts in back-office functions, and ministries are likely to be told not to fill jobs.

If ACT succeed in negotiations, this number will go from $600m to $9.5b as ACT wants to halve the number of staff a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). This is going to reduce jobs and demand for rentals/houses.

• Salary Drops: We’ve enjoyed a very good period of low unemployment which has created much higher salaries in the last 2 or so years.

Yes, cost of living is up globally, but we’ve been able to enjoy higher than normal salaries for some time. This is likely to change with so many people losing their jobs in Wellington, we’ll start to see a lot more competition for jobs again, and employees will not be in the driving seat for salaries anymore. Coupled with the re-implementation of the 90-day rule to fire employees, employers are back in control in Wellington. A drop in the average home-buyers’ earnings and uncertainty around job security will equate in lower demand.

• Immigration: We’re already expecting almost 100,000 new migrants to NZ, which all can be

on a pathway towards being able to buy property in NZ. As long as we have the jobs for them in Wellington, even if we welcomed 10,000 new migrants to Wellington, this could help boost demand. Typically, a good portion of migrants who come to Wellington have come from a higher value property market and are more likely to bid freely for houses here than the local market.

Both ACT, National (and Labour) had plans and pathways for current citizens/residents to bring their parents over, this is significant, as there is a lot of property potential/wealth to be realised should the previous generation bring their assets to NZ. • Investor Confidence: Although we are a long, long, way from landlords making any real money, the perception is that things will get better, and the perception alone can push some investors to buy. Two October celebrations October has seen Johnsonville Uniting Church celebrating on two occasions.

The church celebrated White Sunday with the children on Sunday 8 October.

The children read bible verses and shared with the worshippers what Jesus or God means to them. The theme of the service was Fruits of the Spirit.

White Sunday or Lotu Tamaiti is celebrated to focus on children and the young people of the church On Sunday 15 October Johnsonville Uniting Church celebrated 25 years of belonging to the Passionist family Group movement.

For the occasion the church was joined by Paul Traynor the National Convenor of the Passionist Movement and Kerry and John Kleinsman from St Francis of Assisi Parish who have been involved with uthe church since the beginning.

Following the service the people attending viewed a most memorable slide show put together by Graham Cochrane covering 25 years of activities.

The goals of the Passionist Family group movement (a family for all) are kept alive in the Parish as people support each other through the good times and the bad.

Huge swing sees Tamatha Paul elected

The Green Party’s Tamatha Paul is Wellington Central’s new MP following a massive swing in the voting.

In 2020 Labour’s Grant Robertson won the seat with a majority of 18,878 votes.

This year Labour’s Wellington Central candidate Ibrahim Omer was 3,329 votes behind Tamatha on the election night count.

That represents a swing of more than 22,000 votes away from the Labour Party’s total in favour of the Green Party candidate.

Tamatha is a Wellington City Councillor, and will continue in that role until 10 November.

She was first elected to the council in 2019, and is one of three Pukehīnau/ Lambton Ward Councillors.

When she first sought a seat around the council table in 2019 Tamatha stood as an independent candidate and campaigned on issues such as a zero waste Wellington, connecting communities, an aspiration for a living wage city, and the importance of prioritising future facing leadership which puts the needs of the next generation front and centre of decision-making.

In May 2022 Tamatha announced that she had joined the Green Party and was seeking selection as the party’s candidate for the Pukehīnau/Lambton Ward.

Not only did she receive the Green Party nomination. she also was re-elected to the council.

In 2018, the year before she first stood for the council, Tamatha became the first wahine Māori President of the Victoria University of Wellington Students Association.

Before that she served the students association as an Equity Officer and then Engagement Vice-President.

During her time with the association she worked alongside a number of community organisations on issues such as renting, city safety, and mental health.

Tamatha graduated from Victoria University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in international relations and political science.

She also received the Andrea Brander Accommodation Scholarship, the James MacIntosh Scholarship for achievement, and was on the Dean’s List for Academic Excellence.

She then studied at Massey University, graduating with a Master of Resource and Environmental Planning in 2022.

Former Wellington Mayor Celia WadeBrown could also possibly enter Parliament as a Green list MP, depending on the results of the special votes.

Based on the election night figures the Green Party will bring in six new first term MPs. If the Green Party picked up another two seats following the final count, due to be released on 3 November, Ms WadeBrown would become an MP. Another former Wellington Mayor, Andy Foster, will become a new list MP for New Zealand First.

The Kāpiti Concert Orchestra presents its final concert for the year on November 11th in the Otaki Memorial Hall. “KCO SALUTES THE 40’s” is a blend of music from New Zealand composers and the light-hearted swing band American style of Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Artie Shaw and Richard Rodgers - to name a few. In the 1940’s Paekakariki was a temporary home to American Marines.

Their influence in the Wellington region was not only in safeguarding New Zealand waters but the renowned social scene that was a highlight for many locals. Over the last few years, Jennifer’s focus has changed with the opportunities to become more involved atmospheric firings - wood, salt and soda, and the building of a diesel kiln at Te Horo for The Mirek Arts Trust.

This style of firing pottery creates interesting surface effects from salt and soda added to the firing at high temperatures. Work fired in these kilns produce juicy surfaces, and each piece is individual, not repeatable, making them one–off pieces of ceramic art. It is exciting to be involved and I feel very lucky to be part of this wonderful community project.

Work on show at this year’s Kapiti Coast Arts Trail has come for a variety of kiln’s Darryl Frost, Mike & Judy Page wood-soda kiln and latest kiln build, and salt and soda firings from the Hautere kiln, built with Duncan Shearer for the Mirek Arts Trust.

We know when our children are sick, they go from being active and alert to quiet, grumpy, sleepy, clingy and wanting more cuddles. Often they lose interest in food.

The most common general signs of illness are fever, pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, headache and rash. Fever (body temperature above 37°C) indicates that the body is ‘fighting’ infection from either bacteria or viruses.

Children’s natural defence mechanisms are less well-developed than adults’ immune systems, so children are at higher risk of infections.

Fever accompanied by cough, runny or blocked nose and headache can signify the common cold. “Ask us about our Children’s Pain & Fever fact card”, recommend Self Care pharmacists, “because this has a lot of helpful hints for looking after sick children. Also it indicates what other signs to look out for in children that indicate more serious illnesses.”

Keeping your child comfortable in bed, giving plenty of fluids, and using liquid medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever, are best when your child has a cold.

“But” advice from Self Care pharmacists is “use proper medicine-measuring spoons when measuring-out doses of liquid medicines.

Don’t use kitchen teaspoons because they are not accurate, the volume varies from spoon to spoon, and your child will not receive the correct dose of medicine.”

It is important to look out for sore throats in children as it can lead to Rheumatic Fever. This is a serious illness that affects mainly Maori and Pacific children and young people, aged four and above.

PROTECTING YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH Sore throats generally clear up by themselves but “strep” sore throats can lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease which can be life threatening. It is important to check up children with sore throats so if they do have a “strep” sore throat they can be treated with antibiotics and stop the illness progressing any further.

If you are unsure then get in touch with your pharmacist, doctor or nurse.

Parents can encourage their children to take simple steps to help prevent the spread of some illnesses.

Children should cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze and cough, and then wash their hands straight after. Washing hands is also VERY important after going to the toilet, and before eating. They should not share cups and drink bottles, nor spoons and other eating utensils. Tissues are best for blowing noses, and then they should be thrown away immediately after use.

Immunisation is generally one of the most effective ways of protecting children against infections that can cause serious diseases and associated complications (including death).

All forms of immunisation work by causing the body to produce an immune response, in the same way it would if exposed to the disease but without the child suffering all the symptoms and consequences. In the future, when the child comes into contact with the disease, the immune system responds quickly and helps prevent the child developing the disease.

The World Health organisation and the Ministry of Health recommend immunisation for your children. However there may be cases where it is not suitable to immunise and it is important to see your pharmacist or doctor regarding possible risks and/or contraindications.

Children with asthma or allergies, or who are recovering from an illness, such as a common cold, can be immunised.

Free immunisation, at specific times in a child’s life according to the Ministry of Health’s immunisation schedule, is available to all children in New Zealand, to protect against a number of diseases – diphtheria, haemophilus influenzae type b (a cause of childhood meningitis), pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus and whooping cough.

Side effects from vaccines can sometimes occur and include redness and soreness at the injection site. There may also be mild fever.

While these symptoms may be upsetting at the time, the benefit is protection from the disease. More serious reactions to immunisation are very rare.

The festival will also feature a retrospective of 14 poetry films produced in Aotearoa that will screen out of competition, bringing the total up to 50.

The three categories films could be entered into the competition were Best International Poetry Film, Best New Zealand Poetry Film, and Best Student Poetry Film.

The 36 films in competition will

be whittled down to 14 finalists, and the judges will decide the overall winners for each category, to be announced at the end of the festival.

“Poetry film is a quintessentially interdisciplinary medium bringing together literature, sound, music, and moving images,” Dr Leotta says.

“The festival has provided the opportunity to foster and reinforce interdisciplinary connections both within the university and outside of it.”

Well known Ngaio artist features Ngaio artist Roy Cowan’s work will feature during a tour of Wellington Cathedral of St Paul at 2pm on Sunday 29 October.

Roy’s remarkable mosaic “Moderne Madonna” is one of four works by famous New Zealand artists held in Wellington Cathedral which will be discussed in the tour, organised as a fund-raiser by The Companions of the Cathedral.

A renowned ceramic artist, Roy’s large murals had adorned Wellington commercial and public buildings, including the huge mural in what was PG Wrightson House on Featherston St. Roy’s house in Heke St, where he lived with his wife Juliet Peter, was a mecca for ceramic artists and potters from the

1970s to the 1990s, and renowned potters gathered there to mark regular firings of Roy’s kiln.

Barry Brickell, Guy Ngan, Doreen Blumhardt and other well-known artists were there to witness the last firing of the famous kiln in 1999.

There are Cowan works on display in museums throughout New Zealand and overseas.

Two of them, Adam and Theo, had already been playing in bands for about four years when they joined up with Savannah and James.

Section 11N have been playing regularly at 1841 and also in Upper Hutt featuring their repertoir of mainly 1990s music, including songs by Pearl Jam and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The reason for choosing that era of music is to cater for the mainly 40 to 50 year age group in their audience.

J’ville’s greenkeeper of the year

The Johnsonville Bowling Club’s greenkeeper Brendon Gibson has been named Bowls New Zealand’s 2023 Greenkeeper of the Year.

“His greenkeeping at Johnsonville, his help with other greens in the Wellington region, and his help to other greenkeepers in the Wellington region has made him the unequivocal go-to greensperson in the capital,” says Bowls New Zealand’s Martin Mackenzie.

“So much so, that he has grabbed the attention of bowlers up and down the country.”

The top New Zealand award follows Brendon winning Bowls

Wellington’s 2023 Greenkeeper of the Year.

“Brendon is a greenkeeper who is truly worth his weight in gold,” says General Manager of Bowls Wellington, Blake Signal.

“And all bowlers in Wellington will thank him for his hard work and dedication.

“He is not only hugely important to the state of greens in the Wellington area, but will be hugely important for the state of greens in the Centre for years to come.”

The members of the Johnsonville Bowling Club know when it comes to greencraft, they’re lucky to have the best of the best.

by Ingrid Cree Olympic Harrier Ingrid Cree ran a marathon course record at the recent Hawkes Bay Marathon with a time of 2 hours 47 minutes 42 seconds.

Ingrid ran most of the race in second position but was able to reel in lead female Alice Mason and eventually overtook with just a few kilometres to spare.

“I feel amazing,” Ingrid said.

“I just ran my own race because I knew there were some quicker runners in there.

“Alice is an amazing runner and it just worked out in the end. My daughter said, ‘she’s one minute ahead mum go’ and I thought I’d give it a go and managed to get the win so it’s fantastic”.

Olympic Harriers Club Life Member Max O’Kane ran the half marathon in the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia, plaicng fourth in the men’s 70-74 age competition.

The National Road Relays 2023 took place at the brand new ‘Loburn 68 Relay’ hosted by Canterbury Athletics.

The course was designed to fill the gap left by the perhaps permanent closure of the Takahe to Akaroa Relay, which ran nearly every year from 1935.

The race organisers had listened to what clubs wanted and landed on an undulating two-lap course just north of Rangiora in the rural settlement of Loburn.

As Michelle Van Looy started her warm-up for the race they spotted international high jumper Hamish Kerr and quickly ascertained that they were running the same lap – a fact that popped

up regularly in conversations throughout the day.

Rik Van Looy was first up for the team setting off at 9am. Rik worked hard all the way up the hill to get the team off to a great start – clocking 33 minutes 53 seconds for the 8km lap.

Next up was Craig Holden who has had a fantastic season – with strong performances on road and country.

Craig dispatched the leg with aplomb in 42 minutes 9 seconds (5th fastest M50 time of the day).

Craig handed over to Butch Borlase for leg three. Unfortunately, Butch pulled his calf about 500 metres into the race and found it almost impossible to attack the hills with his usual vigour.

Nevertheless, with his descending less inhibited Butch battled through the lap in 33 minutes 35 seconds – matching Craig’s 5th best M50 performance and taking Olympic up one place to fifth in the M50s race.

The last leg fell to Michelle Van Looy who pushed through her 6.2km lap in 28 minutes 54 seconds and just six seconds behind international star athlete Hamish Kerr!

Darren Gordon took the fifth lap, and skipped through the leg in a rapid 31 minutes 26 seconds – a time only bettered by two other M50s on the day.

Joe Fowler took the baton for the sixth lap and averaged 3:38 mins/km through the leg to secure the fifth fastest M50 time of the day in 40 minutes 55 seconds.

Club members are effusive in their praise of Brendon’s handiwork.

“We have two beautifully manicured Maniototo greens without a blemish on them … which play with such trueness that even billiard tables look on with envy,” one of the club members says.

Brendon not only puts his skills to work at Johnsonville. He spreads his expertise around the whole Wellington Centre.

He is the Vice President of the Wellington Greenkeepers’ Association and he is also available to help any club in the centre with greenkeeping repairs, rehabilitation or redevelopment.

Covering local sports

Adrian Jurke for lap seven and AJ’s time of 36 minutes 56 seconds was enough to secure another fifth place M50.

Rounding off the race was the evergreen Keith Chapman who ran a sterling 32 minutes 10 seconds – doing enough to fend off the rapidly finishing Lake City Athletics team who finished a couple of minutes later.

The team finished fifth overall in the M50 category.

The last club race of the season was the Perston Baton Relay, held at Karori Park. This event is named after JR (Jack) Perston who was an important figure in the early years of the club who went on to be club President for 21 years from 1928 to 1949.

The winning team in just over the hour were Ella Egan, Carmel Stallard, Martyn Cherry, Noah Tonkin, Martin McCrudden, Regan Stallard and Tom Pescini.

Tom had a clear two minute lead from the next team so could ease down coming to the line.

The Bernie Portenski Memorial Cup in Titahi Bay is a handicapped race to celebrate the end of the harrier season and to commemorate Bernie Portenski.

While Bernie was a staunch Scottish Athletics Club member, she trained with and supported many members from other clubs.

The overall race was won by one of the youngest runners in the race who happened to be an Olympic Harrier, Riley Holden.

The 2023-24 summer sporting season has just begun or is about to begin for the various sporting codes.

The “Independent Herald” is keen to cover the sporting successes of clubs and individuals in the northern and western suburbs of Wellington.

At this event people will find out more about the Karori Community Emergency Hub and the types
