MBC launches Maidstone Cares crowdfunding appeal

M

aidstone Borough Council (MBC) has launched a crowdfunding appeal – ‘Maidstone Cares’ today (Friday 24 April), to support local charities and help communities across the borough most affected by the ongoing Coronavirus (Covid-19) and is asking everyone who can to help by donating money to the campaign. The aim of Maidstone Cares is to raise £10,000 to support organisations which are helping those most vulnerable in the borough and MBC is asking everyone who can help to donate now. The Council prides itself on working with partners to improve the quality of community services and facilities including health care and activities as outlined in the MBC Strategic Plan, and it has never been more important to do that than now. Maidstone Cares will support local charities including: • Making a Difference to Maidstone (MADM) – supporting the homeless, those in addiction, socially isolated, disadvantaged and in crisis in the Maidstone area • Maidstone Family Food Bank – providing food supplies across the borough • FareShare Kent – Maidstone branch of the charity ensuring quality surplus food doesn’t go to waste and goes to the local community • Involve Kent – supporting the isolated with phone calls, help with shopping and prescription collections • Heart of Kent Hospice – caring for 1,500 patients and their families each year • Salvation Army - transforming the lives of people in our community MBC Leader – Cllr Martin Cox said: “Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus we have

6

seen so many people across the borough come forward to help - working together to support the most vulnerable people in our communities which is quite overwhelming. “Maidstone Cares is a crowdfunding appeal to help those most in need during this challenging time. We are asking for all those who can to help by donating some money to provide that additional support to these great organisations.” To donate to Maidstone Cares and find out more information – please go the website: https://www.spacehive.com/maidstonecares Cllr Cox concluded: “We would like to thank everyone who can donate. Your support and generosity are crucial now more than ever, please help us help them.”

New date for Race for Life in Maidstone

O

RGANISERS of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Maidstone have announced a new date this autumn for the much-loved event money to the campaign. The charity has postponed Race for Life events this spring and summer across the UK to protect the country’s health during the coronavirus outbreak. This includes the Race for Life 5K, 10K, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids at Mote Park, Maidstone which can no longer take place on Saturday 4th July and Sunday 5th July 2020. But everyone across Maidstone can once again be part of the empowering Race for Life movement and show support to the 51,400 people diagnosed with cancer every year in the South East. The Race for Life 5K, 10K, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events have been rescheduled for 22nd and 23rd August. Participants who had already signed up for the Race for Life event in July can transfer their entry to the new August date. ** Entries are also open for more people to join at raceforlife.org. Lucy Hayward, Cancer Research UK Event Manager for Maidstone, said: “We’re sending a heartfelt message to everyone to seize the opportunity and come join us to Race for Life in Maidstone this August at Mote Park. “As the coronavirus outbreak continues to unfold, we are listening to the advice and guidance of the UK Government carefully. “We have urgently reviewed our events, including Race for Life. As the safety of our supporters, volunteers, suppliers and staff across the hundreds of Race for Life events due to take place in 2020 is incredibly important we have made the decision to postpone the events scheduled in May, June and July including Race for Life Maidstone this July. “We hope men, women and children will unite against cancer and make Race for Life 8

Maidstone the best yet this August. Together we can beat cancer. “Since it began, Race for Life has raised over £890m for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.” Every hour six people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East of England. But the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work relies entirely on the public’s generous support. The charity was able to spend over 34 million last year in the South East on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research. Now many of the scientists and researchers funded by Cancer Research UK are currently being redeployed to help in the fight against Covid-19, including assisting with testing for the virus. Money raised through Race for Life helps to make long-term research and pioneering trials possible, leading to new tests and kinder treatments, which could save the lives of more men, women and children across the South East For more information, visit raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Book Reviews Keeper by Gustawsson

Johana

Oh wow, this is a slicing, chilling, whammy of a read that has left me reeling. In 2015 an actress is abducted, the case has all the hallmarks of a murderer who was locked up in Broadmoor ten years previously, then a body appearing to link to the abduction and murders is found in Sweden. The second in the ‘Roy and Castells’ series continues with sharp, fast-paced drama. I really do recommend starting at the beginning with the fabulous ‘Block 46’, you need to get to know the characters, as to try to step into the middle of the storyline would be almost impossible. The translation is spot on, at no time did I stop to consider this originated in a different language. Set in two countries, and two storylines, with one story steadily advancing through the years, I found myself on full alert and at times racing to keep up. There are sections that are so horrifyingly descriptive they are almost impossible to read, yet the story is so gripping, it is impossible not to. Johana Gustawsson delivers morsel upon morsel of information, and stomach-churning shivers raced down my body. An inkling of what is happening zipped into my thoughts, however I couldn’t have even begun to imagine the final outcome. ‘Keeper’ isn’t an easy read, it isn’t meant to be, it is thoughtprovoking, challenging, and an absolute knockout…I’m still in shock - highly recommended.

Letters to Iris by Elizabeth Noble ‘A gloriously uplifting story about love in all its forms from the Number One Sunday Times bestselling author of The Reading Group and Things I Want My Daughters to Know.’ This 10 10

author has certainly not lost her touch despite it being six years since her last book. This is warm, affectionate, engaging and insightful. Well written with well portrayed characters who interconnect with each other in a tale that grabs your interest from the first chapters and holds it to the satisfying final page. The story revolves around two women, young pregnant Tess who has just left her boyfriend and gone home to mum, and middle-aged Gigi who has just left her husband and needs to sort her life out. Her three kids have grown up and her marriage is stale. The person Tess loves most in her family is her grandmother Iris who is slipping away in a home. The same home houses Gigi’s fatherin-law. Here then is a wonderful multi-generational cast. Mix them together, plus Gigi’s family, and you get a tale of real depth and emotion. The letters of the title are from Iris’ brother during and just after World War II plus some from her grandfather from the same period. They are poignant and affect Tess greatly. A wonderful read, highly recommended.

A Secret Garden by Katie Fforde Another joyful hug of a read from Katie Fforde, what more could you want, than to settle down with her latest book! Philly, Lorna and Anthea, all wonderful ladies, in various stages of their lives, sit centre stage in this delightful story. Set in a friendly community, with a garden to restore, will love pay a fleeting visit or settle in for a longer stay? As to be expected, the three main characters are surrounded by a lovely cast of friends, as life throws gravel, pebbles, and socking great boulders in their path. Katie Fforde has the wonderful ability to put a smile on my face, and I feel re-energised and ready to face the world again when I finish her lovely tales. To be honest, her stories speak for themselves, I really only need to tell you that the latest Katie Fforde is out, and it’s the warm and very charming ‘A Secret Garden’.

Council committee meetings going virtual

N

ew legislation a n d government regulations which have changed rules around holding Council committee meetings will now allow Maidstone Borough Council to resume some Committee meetings in the coming weeks. The new legislation expands the definition of the ‘place’, which means local authority committee meetings can be held electronically, digitally or in virtual locations rather than only with councillors physically present in a room. As long as councillors are able to hear and can be heard and where possible, to see and be seen, the meetings can go ahead. Council officers have been working hard during the last few weeks on technology arrangements and how meetings will be conducted and facilitated to enable committee meetings to be restored. Alison Broom, Chief Executive of Maidstone Borough Council said: “We have been working with our Committee Chairs and Vice Chairs to have the first of these new types of meetings held by the end of April ensuring the important decision making functions of the Council can continue.

12

“Our new arrangements will also give remote access to the public and press, enabling them to participate by telephone and listen to the meetings live.” “We will hold the first meeting of the Policy and Resources Committee on 29 April 2020 at 2pm.” “The new regulations also allow our Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be deferred or cancelled if necessary. A decision has been made to hold our next AGM in May 2021. The appointments made at our last AGM will continue until the next one takes place, this includes the

CHEESE

f you are one of those lucky people who ‘prefer cheese’, you probably won’t have much sympathy for the sugar addicts around you. Not that the two camps are at war or anything but there are a few key differences that set them apart. You see, sugarholics - almost synonymous with chocoholics (have you ever met a sugarholic who doesn’t like chocolate?), claim to be born that way. “I’ve had a sweet tooth as long as I can remember!” they often say, thinking of whatever finger-licking pot of gooey, chocolatey loveliness had started the love affair. Cheese lovers, on the other hand, tell you that you can learn to love cheese. My sisterin-law who is a true cheese connoisseur even promised me that if I’d started eating cheese, it would eventually ‘cure’ my sweet tooth. Well, what can I tell you, I launched into my new cheese eating campaign with enthusiasm, only to find myself liking cheese as had been promised, but guess what? I still have an incorrigible sweet tooth. Whatever taste buds were meant to be re-educated by the new onslaught of salty, creamy flavours, remained stubbornly in favour of sweetness. So although I still identify as a sweet tooth owner, chocoholic and sugar addict, now I also like cheese and eat it with a gusto, where before I had the same attitude to the white

stuff as cheese lovers have to sweets: take it or leave it. The experiment has failed. And just in case you think this is a one off case, the experiment was repeated in the scientific conditions of our household on my other half, who - you’ve guessed it, is also a chocoholic. The result was the same. Having evolved from the days of mild cheddar and the gentle, nutty flavours of emmental, we find ourselves in the supermarket cheese counter pondering whether we should go for mature or extra mature cheddar for the broccoli and cheese soup. Just to make sure we buy both, and then some more, so if you opened our fridge, you’d think two cheese lovers live here. You see, there is white Stilton, French goat cheese, a slice of Brie, even a few packages with names I cannot even pronounce, let alone know what they mean. No spaghetti Bolognese is complete without a generous topping of Parmigiano Reggiano; we always have a good laugh trying it on with the Italian accent. But has eating cheese cured us of the sweet tooth? No. At the end of the supermarket trip we head towards the dessert counter to keep the peace between the two warring sets of taste buds. “A little bit of something you fancy is good for you, right?” my other half says, holding on tight to his chosen cheesecake.
