CALM PARTNERSHIP

Maidenhead United are delighted to announce that Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) will be this season’s front-of-shirt sponsor for the third year in a row.

The club has proudly supported CALM since the beginning of the 2023/24 season, with CALM’s logo emblazoned across all of United’s home and away kits, including our men and women’s first teams, Juniors, and Futsal divisions among others.

Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is a suicide prevention charity fighting to reduce the devastating impact of suicide in the UK They run a life-saving helpline for anyone affected by suicide or suicidal thoughts It’s free, anonymous and open from 5pm to midnight every day

The CALM Partnership, which aligns with one of Maidenhead United’s key objectives to ensure our community is connected to one another, is made possible due to the generosity of local businesses.

Luis Mackness, Services Manager – CALM Clubs, said: “It’s great to be on the front of MUFC’s kits for another season

“CALM has been built on having a presence in places where people spend their free time Hopefully they’ll be having a great time watching their side win, but either way we need to make sure that everyone connected to the club knows that CALM exists. Never forget that CALM provides life-saving services, information and advice to help anyone struggling with life to navigate the issues that can make us feel miserable.

“A massive thanks to the club and of course the partners for getting us on the front of the shirts again We’ve got lots lined up that we hope will further support people in the community and we’re excited for the season ahead”

Sian Lancaster, Commercial Director, commented: “We are delighted to continue our CALM Partnership for another season.

“CALM’s logo will be prominently displayed around York Road and across all of our kits under the Maidenhead United umbrella, and we feel it’s vitally important to raise awareness of the charity’s work.

“We must say a huge thank you to our local businesses who continue to support the CALM Partnership We will be revealing more details very soon, but it’s not too late to get involved! If you or your business would like to support this initiative, please contact commercial@maidenheadunitedfcorg”

WILL DE HAVILLAND

Maidenhead United are delighted to announce Will de Havilland as Club Captain ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Having joined United from Dover Athletic in 2021, de Havilland enters his fifth season as a Magpie where he has been a mainstay in Alan Devonshire’s defensive line With 149 starts and 11 substitute appearances during in his time in Berkshire, our number 4 now takes on the permanent role as Club Captain as he looks to guide Maidenhead United back to the National League.

Towards to conclusion of last campaign, Will de Havilland became no stranger to donning the armband but to have the role set in stone meant a great deal. Asked to describe his initial feelings about taking on the role, de Havilland’s first words were: “Very, very proud.”

“I was honoured when the Gaffer asked me at the end of last season, obviously with when we had the club captains last year, [Alan] Massey and [Craig] Rossy, out for the last six or seven games last year, the Gaffer sort of gave it to me I think we've done quite well So, yeah, it was nice for him to ask I'm looking forward to it”

An experienced character on and off the pitch, de Havilland has been part of the leadership group at York Road for all of his spell so far. But the new permanent position creates the opportunity for an enhanced role and a few minor adjustments to his style.

“I've got to lead by example a little bit more, which I'm happy to do. I always sort of like to lead by way of playing and always being ready to battle So, whether it's going good or bad, I'll always show up and be ready to battle So, yeah, to just try and lead by example is how I'm going to take the role and [use] what I've learned from the previous captain, Massey, who I thought was a really good skipper and really enjoy playing under him as captain”

Having featured alongside each other 71 times for the Magpies, our new Club Captain could not underplay to role which his predecessor played.

“He's a legend of the club, a really good guy in general,” de Havilland said. “It was really good playing under Massey, he's always willing to help everyone, which is what I'll take from him Hopefully I pass that down to the younger lads as well He was always willing to help out, pass on tips and advice, especially to the younger ones So, I'm definitely going to try and incorporate that because he did it really well for a number of years”

WILL DE HAVILLAND

With Massey and many others departing over the summer, there has been substantial changes to the playing squad at United de Havilland is looking to embrace the numerous new teammates who will join him wearing the black and white stripes.

“I think it's almost a brand-new squad, really,” he explained. “There's probably four or five of us left. But I think everyone who's come in as gelled pretty well already quite quickly It's not an environment where people come in and feel a bit nervy and stuff It seems as if we've already gelled quite well as a team, which is good And it's shown in the pre-season performances So, we'll be looking to carry that into the start of the season because I think it's really important we start well this year because we got off to a really slow start last year and it ended up costing us So, I think starting fast this year is going to be really important - just carrying that momentum on through the season.”

“Yeah, it's been tough this year,” said the 30-year-old. “We've done a lot of work, and I think it was something [we struggled with] last year. I think the lads are fit, we're doing all right injury wise, whereas last season we'd already had like three or four really bad injuries and a lot of surgeries at the start of the season But this year there's no serious injuries, just a couple of little niggles But it looks like most of the lads are going to be fit for the start of the season, which is really good news And yeah, we've worked very hard, so we're in good shape as well”

As our number 4 enters his fifth season as a Magpie, he wanted to reiterate just how much being part of this club meant to him and what a pleasure it is to represent Maidenhead United on the pitch.

“I've loved my time here I think when I came here, I sort of got to know straight away that I was going to love playing here I get on really well with the gaffer, the staff and all the backroom staff as well There's a lot of good people in the club, which is the main reason I sort of wanted to stay because, it's important you enjoy what you do – and playing for Maidenhead, I've really enjoyed”

When asked about his aims for the season, Will was assertive: “I'd be disappointed with anything less than playoffs, personally.”

“I mean, giving it a good shot of winning it is what we're really aiming for, too. We saw last year in that league that the last game of the season there was about six teams who could still win the league So, we know it's not going to be easy, but we certainly back ourselves to be up there and winning a lot more games this year So hopefully we can go out and do that And, however we do it, whether we do it by playoffs or winning the league, hopefully we can get the club back up”

ALAN DEVONSHIRE

Alan Devonshire insists the objective is promotion for the forthcoming season, but acknowledges that it will be no easy feat as Maidenhead United embarks on a National League South campaign for the first time in nine years

Earlier in the summer, the gaffer discussed the ongoing summer transfer business, noting that it had been trickier to retain key players owing to the drop in division. The full article is available to read on our website.

“It's like Tristan [Abrahams], you know, he wanted to still play [in the National League],” said Devonshire “We’ve got Shawn [McCoulsky] who’s gone into the Football League, we’ve got Reece [Smith] that’s going into the League – so there's three players gone straight away who scored a lot of our goals last year

“It’s more difficult, and I think there's ten full-time clubs in the South There's lots of teams going for it. We'll have to have a look at it and see how we do. We just hopefully get onto a good start and just take it from there. But it isn’t going to be easy.”

ALAN DEVONSHIRE

The NLS is an almost unrecognisable league to the one from which United escaped eight years ago. Margate, for example, reside in the Step 4 Isthmian League South East Division these days, while East Thurrock – whom the Magpies crucially beat to build a healthy buffer over Ebbsfleet in April 2017 – no longer exist after going into liquidation two years ago.

Structurally, the league has also changed over the past decade There are now 24 teams in the division compared to 22, meaning an extra four games per season (and an additional relegation spot) Likewise, the playoff format has since been revamped, with six teams eligible for promotion come the season’s end rather than four

“I think it’s better,” Devonshire said on the quality differences between 2017’s NLS and the one of today. “I think last year there were about eight clubs that could have got promoted in the last couple of weeks of the season. So, the standard's gone up. As I say, there's ten full-time teams in the league.”

As the name implies, the National League South is regionalised, meaning no overnight trips for the Magpies this season “It'll be more local, but it's going to be tough,” insists Devonshire “We know that there's a lot of clubs going for it spending lots of money So, we'll just have to wait and see”

The gaffer said that despite being largely over the disappointment of relegation, it “still wrangles” with him, and noted that the buck stops with himself when it comes to the team’s performance. “I'll always blame myself,” Devonshire said. “It's my fault, always. It's, you know, it's down to me. But yeah, we'll just have to see, I've got to wipe that clean now and start again fresh”

The sheer amount of squad turnover means there will be more players to “bed in” this season, according to the gaffer While preparations remain largely unchanged no matter the division, Devonshire is looking forward to the new campaign

“Well, the aim is to try and get promoted. That's the aim. That would be what we want,” Devonshire said. “So, I think it's top seven or top eight. You need to be amongst that, but [we need] to just get a settled side together and hopefully build on what we’ve done over the years.”

It’s a resounding final statement from the manager as our interview draws to a close

“I want to try and get back to where I think we belong”

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

Our season starts this afternoon with a fixture against the club who have visited York Road for competitive fixtures more than any other. Chesham United was established in 1917 by a merger ofChesham TownandChesham Generals and footballing history between our two towns goes back as far as 1882 when a Chesham side were beaten 3-0 in a Berks & Bucks Cup tie at York Road. We’ve since met sides from the Buckinghamshire town in each of the FA Cup, the Amateur Cup, Berks & Bucks League, Great Western Suburban League, Spartan League, Great Western Combination, Corinthian League, Corinthian League Memorial Shield, Mithras Cup, Premier Midweek Floodlit League, Isthmian League, Isthmian League Cup, Isthmian League Subsidary Cup and the FA Trophy

Chesham feature prominently in our history, not least due to the fact that our first ever competitive ‘league’ away fixture was played at the New Road ground of Chesham FC, who became Chesham Town five years after that historic match, played on 22nd September 1894. Both were founder members of the Southern League Second Division and Maidenhead had made a great start to league soccer, with a 2-0 victory over Sheppey United two weeks earlier

Despite the relatively short but, according to the Maidenhead Advertiser, “tedious” journey the ‘Red and Black’ visitors arrived late and the match kicked off at five minutes to four Chesham won the toss and chose to play down the slope Maidenhead began to take a control after a scrappy start and “Spratley spoilt a good chance by passing the sphere behind.” Captain William Walton – one of three brothers who would go on and play for Maidenhead FC – opened the scoring with “a neat kick” and the skipper then assisted William Gilroy for the second. Roley Edwards took advantage of a miskick by Chesham ‘keeper Humphrey to give Maidenhead a three-goal half time lead

The second half was more even as “Chesham acted together a little better” but Edwards added his second with a header from a Lamb “side centre” and Lamb then assisted Walton for his own brace and Maidenhead’s fifth before the final whistle Maidenhead surely had perfected this league football lark immediately! Not a bit of it – none of their remaining ten Southern League fixtures were won that season and they finished bottom of the table, one point behind Chesham. There was some solace however in that Maidenhead picked up the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup for the first time ever in April 1895, beating local rivals Marlow not far from York Road over at Kidwells Park – a competition that Chesham Generals would win in 1901 before Chesham Town enjoyed success in 1904

The Magpies last league meeting here with Chesham United in August 2002 resulted in another 5-0 win for Maidenhead What price a ‘three-peat’ of that scoreline today?

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

Chesham United’s management duo James Duncan and Michael Murray agreed a contract extension last summer until the end of the 2026/27 season, with Chairman Peter Brown reflecting: “when we appointed James and Michael, we were facing a relegation scrap to avoid dropping to Step 4 of the Non-League game We made it clear back then that our long-term commitment was to take Chesham United up to the National League South, Step 2”

That goal was achieved at the end of 2023/24 with the Generals crowned Southern League Southern Premier champions by a nine-point margin. ‘JD & Muzza’ were originally appointed as Joint Managers in October 2018, guiding the Generals from the bottom of the table to a 10th place finish Prior to joining Chesham, the pair linked up in management at Potters Bar Town, where in the 2017/18 season they led the Hertfordshire club to promotion into the Isthmian Premier Division.

THREE TO WATCH

Dan Bayliss – Defender. The 26-year-old centre back joined Chesham this summer after two years at Slough Town. Bayliss started his senior career at Basingstoke Town and went on to captain Bracknell Town Bayliss quickly established himself as a key figure in the Rebels defence, demonstrating solidity and an ability to contribute offensively, particularly from set pieces.

Samson Esan – Forward Former Magpie who joined us in February 2022 from Potters Bar Town He rejoined the Scholars for the rest of the 2021/22 season and – with opportunities at York Road hard to come by – switched to Chelmsford City on loan in the National South Samson was a youngster at Norwich City

Nathan Minhas - Forward. Nathan started in the Maidenhead United Academy and joined Chesham from our neighbours Slough Town in the summer of 2024 He scored 17 times in his debut National South season with Slough after joining from Beaconsfield. Minhas was Generals top goalscorer last season as they finished 13th in the National South

MUWFC

Maidenhead United announced on 30th June that former Premier League forward Dave Kitson has agreed to become manager of Maidenhead United Women with immediate effect. The 45-year-old’s appointment came as our team commence pre-season training ahead of the 2025/26 FA Women’s National League season, their twelfth consecutive season at Tier 4.

Dave started his professional career with Cambridge United and his goalscoring form with the U’s attracted the attention of Reading, with whom he achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2006 He subsequently played in the top flight with Stoke City and enjoyed spells with Portsmouth, Sheffield United and Oxford United Dave is relishing the opportunity to build on the recent success of MUWFC, telling us: “I am delighted to be here. I am looking forward to meeting the players and helping them in their development.” In addition to his role with the Women's team, Dave will also be undertaking the important role of Head of Performance at the club. All at Maidenhead United welcome Dave to the club and wish him a successful tenure with MUWFC.

Kitson moved quickly to appoint assistant manager Sean Hillier in one of his first acts as manager Hillier joins United after a successful spell behind the scenes at Brentford FC Women having started his footballing journey at the west London club Growing up in Ealing, he was one year older than a certain Ryan Peters who was also on Brentford’s books at the time.

From Brentford it was onto the non-league circuit for Sean with firstly AFC Wimbledon before spells at North Greenford, Hanwell Town and Chertsey Town. From then it was onto coaching, thanks to his close links to Karleigh Osborne, who took on the Brentford FC Women’s managerial job in 2018 Hillier explains: “In 7 seasons at Brentford we had 2 promotions Twice in a row we were close to promotion from Tier 6 to 5, and we had success in cups – going through the FA Cup qualifying rounds and losing narrowly to Fulham in Round 3 We won the Capital Cup twice, the League plate and reached the semi-final of League cup Finally, last season we won Tier 6, losing only once all season and winning all of our other league games”.

Osborne left his role at Brentford in the summer which opened up a new opportunity for Hillier when Kitson came calling. Hillier added: “We are trying to get our identity into place, but I must say that what we call ‘the glue’ – the established players - have been great since day 1 which really helps us all We are all excited for the season ahead and the challenge in a tough division"

PRE-SEASON ROUNDUP

Pre-season for the Magpies ended on an unbeaten note last weekend at Oxford City as Sam Barratt’s glancing header on the stroke of half time earned victory at the M Group Stadium.

The programme of friendlies commenced on Tuesday 8th July as United made the short trip to Southern League neighbours Flackwell Heath Maidenhead took the lead through Manny Onariase’s header The Magpies added a second on the cusp of half-time; Sam Barratt and summer signing Jordon Ragguette linked up, with the latter delivering a cross into the path of Josh Popoola – in his first game of a successful trial period - to beat the ‘keeper with a smart header Asher Yearwood’s corner was nodded home by Barratt early in the second period, the scoring rounded off by a tidy finish from another trialist late on.

The following Tuesday, United made the trip to the Oxford United training ground and, with the U’s first team on tour in Indonesia, Maidenhead faced the Championship club’s Under 23 side A gale force wind at Oxford Sports Park made quality football difficult and a goalless draw resulted This set the Magpies up for a run of three home fixtures

PRE-SEASON ROUNDUP

Firstly, a sizeable crowd saw West Ham’s Under 23 side defeated in an entertaining game at York Road Ryan Bartley – one of ten brand new faces looking to force their way into Dev’s plans this afternoon – notched early on before a spectacular volley from the returning Harry Pritchard gave United daylight. Bartley got a decisive touch onto a Barratt free-kick and the fourth goal for Maidenhead came midway through the second half courtesy of former Gosport man Asher Yearwood’s crisp strike. The usual raft of pre-season substitutions followed and Sean Moore’s effort from just outside the box fizzed past Harvey Collins in the 83rd minute In the 90th, substitute Josh Ajala ramped home another past the Maidenhead substitute ‘keeper with a tidy finish

Two Enterprise National League sides also fell to defeat at York Road Two early goals put Boreham Wood on the back foot - a dangerous ball in the box allowed Kane Ferdinand to fire towards goal. Former Magpie Nathan Ashmore could only parry, with new boy Josh Umerah tapping home an early lead. United doubled their advantage within minutes of their first. Harry Pritchard, this time providing an assist, lofted a volley to the back post where Manny Onariase was on hand to head the ball into the back of the net Barratt again headed home a corner in the second period, his decisive goal sandwiching a brace from the Wood’s Matt Rush

A week later and Eastleigh – who led thanks to Aaron Blair’s first half goal – were defeated by another Pritchard stunner and a late winner by recent capture Liam Dulson.

ASHER YEARWOOD

Asher Yearwood spoke of pride and excitement for the new season in his first interview since becoming a Maidenhead United player, adding that the Magpies should be looking to challenge for promotion over the next nine months.

The midfielder was Alan Devonshire’s second addition to the squad earlier this summer, signing on after an excellent season with Gosport Borough Scoring 18 times and assisting 11, Yearwood was a fundamental player in the Boro’s line-up making 52 appearances across the campaign

Describing himself as “an all-action midfield player,” Yearwood said he likes to “go win the ball back, run hard, work hard, and always try and make things happen”.

“It was a bit of an up and down season, but it personally kind of went well,” said the 28-year-old. “I took on quite a lot of responsibility for the team, scoring goals, helping out the team and I enjoyed the kind of football the team played. The coach developed me really well, and saw traits and parts of my game that translate really well into how they wanted to play and yeah, it was just enjoyable I was personally proud of how it went, but I still think that I've got more and more to give So that's the aim”

ASHER YEARWOOD

Asher spoke highly of the Magpies and manager Alan Devonshire during the interview just before preseason training began on Tuesday, 1st July

“It's obviously a big club It's obviously a club that has done really well over the last ten years, one that I'm definitely proud to play for and [I’m] looking forward to getting started,” said Yearwood “Dev's a very experienced manager and he knows what he's doing,

and I'm looking forward to him taking me under his wing, looking to improve me and get the best out of me”

The midfielder acknowledged what he described as “one of the toughest National League Souths” he’s witnessed, but took a positive outlook ahead of the season’s commencement on Saturday, 9th August.

“I think it's important to take on that challenge for a club that's been in the National League for as long as it has,” Yearwood explained. “We should be looking to be favourites; we should be looking to go and bounce straight back up, understand what we are and make sure we go and put the hard work in so that come April/May next year, we're in the right position where we want to be

“I think it's important that we take everything seriously, we're as professional as possible, and we put the work in,” he added, “we put the work in on the training field and when it comes to games, we're playing with a style and identity that we know what we're doing when we get on the pitch, and we go out there and we execute it.

“However that may be, playing home or away, I think it's really important to use the fans as well to make sure that we've got such a good, strong fanbase, and make sure we’ve got them on our side and they’re supporting us all the way so they can kick on, and come May we’ll all be celebrating”

ON THIS DAY

Harry Pritchard featured on the front of our programme during the 2014-15 season, including an opening day 2-1 victory over Sutton United – welcome back Harry! However, a new signing from Hampton & Richmond by the name of Dave Tarpey made an immediate impact netting a brace in this Conference South victory. The visitors dominated the opening stages, Maidenhead keeper Elvjis Putnins was forced to make a decent save from Marvin Williams before Kane Haysman was denied by the woodwork Against the run of play the Magpies took the lead in the 19 minute when Tarpey collected a pass from Stefan Brown to fire a shot past Tim Lovelock After the break, Sutton, much-fancied for promotion that season, started in determined fashion and it was no surprise when they equalised on 56 minutes, Jessy Reindorf finishing off a fine move. Both sides created further chances and in the 85 minute, after some excellent build-up play Tarpey fired home the winner to earn the Magpies an unexpected three points. Tarpey (top, centre) was presented the MUSA ‘Man of the Match’ award in Stripes Bar after the game and would go on to achieve legendary status at York Road. The match also marked the official opening of the new 550 seat stand on the railway side of the ground th th

In 2008 Maidenhead recorded their first opening day win in five years with a 2-1 victory at Bromley Both sides created chances in a lively opening, the hosts took the lead on 22 minutes when a free-kick from Louis Fazakerley just outside the box flew in to the net despite a despairing dive from debutant keeper Shane Gore. A few minutes later the visitors were back level following a corner, Richard Pacquette setting up Lee Newman to apply the finishing touch. United slowly took control after the break and took the lead with Newman’s second goal of the game from the penalty spot after Steve Clark handled. Bromley created a number of half-chances in the latter stages but the Maidenhead defence held firm to record a long-awaited opening day victory
