is a GAP YEAR?
When you hear the term "gap year," does it sound like simply taking time off or hitting pause?
According to the Gap Year Association (GYA), it’s far more intentional.
While it does involve stepping away from the traditional path of going directly from high school to college, a gap year is intended to be a period of experiential learning, growth, and preparation.
The GYA defines it as "a structured break from formal education, lasting from two months to two years, often taken between high school and college or during transitions in higher education."
Gap years have long been a tradition in places such as Europe, and Australia. Now, they are becoming increasingly popular in the United States and Canada.

What’s your advice for new students?
Finding a career can feel so far away, but I really encourage students to realize that your career is already starting when you begin college.
What’s the best way to get started?
Little things like getting involved, picking up an on-campus job, volunteering in the community – that’s career development.
What if a student has no idea what career path to pursue?
Not everybody has this immediate clarity of what they want to do. We have a lot of different tools and encourage students to take assessments that identify their current interests and skills that they bring to the table.
How does your team support students?
We have a lot of skill-building resources and programs so students can jump in and develop skills that they need to be successful. Students can come to our team for job-search strategies, and things like developing résumés or cover letters, mock interviews, peer coaching, and more.

Taking a gap year isn’t a new idea. For decades, students in countries like the UK and Australia have taken time off after high school to explore life outside the classroom. Now, this trend is catching on in North America, and for good reason. The Gap Year Association estimates that each year 40-60000 students in the US take a gap year.
1. You may do better in college
Did you know students who take a gap year often do better in college?
According to the American Gap Association, 90% of gap year participants graduate from a fouryear institution, compared to just 60% of students nationwide. They also tend to graduate faster, averaging just over four years. Why? Taking a gap year helps you figure out what you really want to study, so you return to school with focus.

But for others, taking a gap year can be an eye-opening, life-changing decision.

"Not many people can take a gap year or go abroad, and it’s not cheap. I’ve become more grateful for everything, especially my parents’ support," she shared.
Just ask Francesca, who stepped away from traditional academics to explore her options, experience life abroad, and gain a deeper understanding of herself before committing to university.
Born and raised in Japan, Francesca had never lived abroad, though the idea intrigued her.
A visit to her brother’s college in the U.S. sparked a new curiosity about studying in another country, but she wasn’t sure.
"I thought a gap year would help me decide if I wanted to study in the U.S."
Instead of mapping out every detail, she left room for spontaneity.
Her only concrete plan was to audit a university semester in the U.S., but beyond that, she kept an open mind.
Financial concerns initially worried her— she didn’t want to burden her parents.
However, she was fortunate to have their encouragement, and she supported
One of the most impactful parts of her gap year was auditing classes at an American university.
She unexpectedly found herself sitting in a senior year seminar class on the fall of the Roman Empire.
Although challenging, she enjoyed it so much, that this challenge was what ultimately solidified her enthusiasm for an American-style education.
Living in the U.S. also brought cultural adjustments.
Coming from Tokyo, where people tend to mind their own business, she initially struggled with the close-knit, small-town lifestyle.
But over time, she grew to appreciate the warmth and community spirit, and even the local gossip.
Another unforgettable experience was living with her grandfather, an 84-yearold, legendary college football coach.
Observing his dedication to his players taught her about the power of connection and mentorship.
"He always says everything goes by super fast and that you shouldn’t take anything for granted," she reflected. "Everything is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
As her journey unfolded, she returned to Japan to spend time with her grandparents, took on a part-time job, and even earned her driver’s license.
She tutored math and French, discovering that while she enjoyed teaching, it wasn’t her true passion.
Working in an American restaurant also opened her eyes to the value of diverse job experiences.
Seeing her high school friends dive straight into university gave her a new perspective on her own unique path.
Her gap year wasn’t just about experiences - it deepened her appreciation for the opportunities she had.
Her career ambitions shifted, too. Initially set on Political Science, she discovered a natural strength in working with people.
"I realized I love interacting with and helping people, so now I want to study Psychology."
Taking time off also changed her perspective on education.
Having received a French education and now preparing for an American university, she’s excited to embrace diverse learning styles.
Looking ahead, Francesca feels really prepared. Meeting people from different backgrounds helped her figure out the kind of person she wants to be - openminded and accepting of others.
Her advice to students considering a gap year?
"If you're thinking about it, do it! Any experience is valuable as long as you learn from it. If you’re unsure about what you want to do, taking time to reflect can be incredibly helpful."
A gap year isn’t for everyone, but for Francesca, it was the perfect choice.
Her journey was filled with selfdiscovery, personal growth, and life lessons - proof that sometimes, taking a step back can help you move forward in the best possible way.

Anja’s Gap Year Working Holiday
For a lot of students, the final years of school are all about university applications, career decisions, and figuring out what’s next.
But what if the best choice isn’t rushing straight to university, but instead taking a break?
That’s exactly what Anja did when she decided to take a gap year—and she has zero regrets.
For Anja, this wasn’t something she had planned for years.
In fact, it all started as a joke between her and a friend when they were feeling overwhelmed by university applications.
But the more she thought about it, the more it made sense.
“Once the idea of taking a year off was in my head, I just couldn’t shake it. I was way more excited about planning a gap year than filling out applications.”
So she and her friend came up with a plan.
Because they both had passports that made them eligible for a working holiday visa for Australia, they’d spend part of the year earning money, and then they’d travel through Southeast Asia with their savings.
Also, both had completed basic sailing theory and decided to work on getting more credentials before looking for jobs with sailing companies in Australia.
“We wanted to do some more courses on top of the licenses that we already had that would qualify us to work on big yachts.”

“We had to write CVs, apply to loads of jobs, and go through interviews
before we got anything,” says Anja.
“It wasn’t necessarily easier than applying to university—it was just different.”
Once they landed jobs on sailing yachts, the adventure truly began. They spent months at sea, working as crew members, learning navigation skills, assisting guests, and even dealing with seasick passengers.
Some days were tough, but Anja fell in love with sailing and realized she was way more capable than she had ever given herself credit for.
“I'm more confident now after having had to deal
with a lot of situations that I wouldn't have come across at university, I think it definitely makes you mature a lot faster.”
After their time on the yachts, they set off to explore Southeast Asia.
They wandered through bustling markets in Thailand, hiked through rice fields in Vietnam, and relaxed on the beaches of Indonesia.
There were plenty of challenges, but every experience helped her grow.
Despite the ups and downs, Anja believes taking a gap year was the best decision she could have made.
“I don’t know anyone who regrets taking a gap year,” she says. “University will always be there, but the opportunity to take a year out like this might not come again.”
So, what did Anja gain from her experience?
Independence – From budgeting for food, transport, and accommodation to
handling unexpected challenges, she learned how to take care of herself.
Adaptability – Whether it was navigating new cultures, dealing with difficult yacht guests, or figuring out last minute travel plans, she became comfortable with the unknown.
A new appreciation for University – “I’ve realized how hard working life actually is,” she laughs. “Now I’m grateful to have four more years of studying before fully entering the workforce.”
Confidence – Having handled everything from language barriers to tricky financial situations, Anja feels much more prepared for the future.
The Challenges of a Gap Year
Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing (literally). Some of the hardest parts included:
Budgeting – Learning to manage money wisely, especially when converting so many currencies between countries,
was tough. Situations where credit cards weren’t accepted and they didn’t have cash were stressful.
Logistics – Finding places to stay lastminute, dealing with unreliable internet, and navigating unfamiliar places weren’t easy.
Cultural Differences – Being in places where punctuality wasn’t a big deal or dealing with tricky customers on the yachts took patience and flexibility.
The Importance of Keeping a Journal
One thing Anja wishes she had started earlier? Keeping a journal.
“We thought keeping a journal was so lame at first,” she admits, “but now, I’m so glad we did. It’s amazing to look back on all the little moments we might have forgotten.”
Anja’s Advice for Future Gap Year Travelers
Just go for It – If the idea excites you, seriously consider it. University isn’t going anywhere!
Have a Plan – “Sitting at home for a year isn’t fun,” she says. “Make sure you have a purpose; whether it’s work, volunteering, or travel.”
Stay Open to Spontaneity – While planning is essential, some of the best experiences come from last-minute opportunities.
Think About Your Budget – Different places have different costs, and thinking ahead can prevent financial stress.
Document Your Journey – Keeping a journal or scrapbook will let you relive your adventures later on.

Every year, between 90 and 130 students take a gap year at Harvard, and their experiences are “uniformly positive.”
In order to make sure you have an effective gap year, make sure you set goals and have a plan.
While your gap year doesn’t need to follow a rigid schedule or be planned to the last detail, you should be clear on the purpose of how you’ll be spending your time.
You may want to start the year off by participating in an internship or service program before transitioning into a less structured period of traveling or development of a personal skill or interest.
