Children at Warkworth Kindergarten have embarked on a one-year partnership with Warkworth District Museum, aimed at deepening their appreciation of local history. The Historic Warkworth Programme was launched last month when the kindergarten visited the museum and each child officially became a ‘friend’ of the museum. They also took the opportunity to plant a totara in Parry Kauri Park, assisted by Kauri Bushmen, Ray Jensen and Merv Bayer. Museum manager Victoria Joule says she’s thrilled with the initiative, which will give the children a better understanding of how life has changed over the years. The partnership means the children can visit for free as often as they like during the year and their families get a discounted rate. “We hope other schools will follow the kindy’s lead,” she says. Head teacher Leonie Hassall says groups of six to eight children will visit the museum every week, with larger groups for special occasions. “The resources at the museum are fantastic and we hope the children, and their families, will gain a greater knowledge and understanding of the Warkworth district’s history by visiting on a regular basis.”

Ashleigh Pringle was happy to give Merv Bayer a helping hand to plant the kindy totara.
