Regardless is focusing on cultural representations and identity and challenging the way fashion media is dealing with these issues.

How we express ourselves through what we wear?

How our identity plays a role in shaping our style choices?

This issue explores the idea of belonging and identity through the eyes of young individuals living in a different country from their home country.

Each of them is asked to provide one word that represents the most important aspect of their identity and then explain whether it impacts how they dress. Through these interviews, we hope to shed light on the relationship between fashion and personal identity and prompt the fact that fashion can be a tool for self-expression and reflection.

“I have felt stronger bond with my Japanese roots after coming to the UK. Also, I prefer to wear Japanese brands or clothes related to my country more than before. I want to keep my style of dressing (it could be Japanese) even though I live in the UK.”

“Sometimes it leads me to wear traditional things that indicate Iran’s culture and art, like accessories and clothing with Persian motifs.

However, sometimes it has a negative impact on the way I dress. For instance, it prevents me from choosing my style freely. Always hear voices like don’t wear this! It’s too short! Or What do other people think of it?

“It definitely influences how I dress because it’s freeing to explore the styles you like!

I used to try and dress how other people were kind of “okay” with seeing me in a way (if that makes sense). Still, now I’m more interested in finding pieces or outfit combinations that I’m comfortable in but also something that expresses my identity through fashion.”

I feel I’m a big girl now! I’ve noticed that my fashion sense has evolved. I used to be all about the pink outfits, but these days, I’m just not choosing it anymore. I think it’s because I’m getting older and starting to feel more mature. I feel like I’m dressing more like a lady now.
