National Youth Policy: A Critical Look

During the preceding of ten years, the youth of Somaliland architected illicit journey towards Europe with intend to acquire residential and job opportunities, because of the low job opportunity available in the country.

This illicit migration fascinated many youngsters in Somaliland to put effort how they will cross in many hazardous borders and seas. Many of them die in the way to Libya, others were raped and tortured, and many of them die in the Mediterranean Sea, while the rest were detained in work detention.
SONYO Umbrella has become aggravated from these painful events. It become too difficult to take in their hearts and wait till the last drop of tears dry on the check of many parents, Power distraction, brain drain, knowledge extermination, and economic distraction become hurricanes facing the future of the country.
The youth has become center of this disaster those who are the leaders of today and tomorrow, those the development of the country is on their hands. The emigration of powerful, educated young generation from the country has become black clouds heading to the future of the country.
In respond of this, SONYO formulated and drafted a proposal with the objective to resolve brain desert, unemployment, mass migration and economic lost heading to the country and the youth in generally with the help of DRC (Danish Refugee Council). DRC took the responsibility of getting a fund for this project.
As you can understand from the name of this project, the overall objective of the project is to divert the youth from doing evil actions, radicalism and interyouth conflict through advocacy, entrepreneurship skills and skill trainings. The advocacy program is airing for three activities interdependent with each other (sports, culture and conflict management education) by expecting to train 1000 youth as direct beneficiaries’ and more than 10,000 indirect beneficiaries.
Turning the Tide is the name given to this project, because the project activities make an effort to turn the youth from emigration to inhabitation. This project started with well organized youth festival congregated more than 2000 youth in crown hotel with the guest speaker of Nuur Dalacay (real nationalist), the most popular Somali poets, HAVAYO Circus group, KMC peace craven, minister of youth and sports, and other honorable guests provided memorable lectures about migration.
The project is sixteen months project involving in Hargeisa and Ainabo, and it has four phases of intervention, three in Hargeisa and one in Ainobo. The first phase of intervention started the first week of September in SOCSA center, more than 250 participants will benefitted the first phase of the project by capacitating them the skill of sports, culture and conflict management education, with the objective to educate them the methodology of Somali traditional conflict resolution.
In addition to that, the project builds a key component between the youth and the traditional leaders, those involve the peace building and conflict resolution in Somaliland.
