PUBLIC LIBRARY
A public library is an essential community resource that provides access to knowledge and exposure to people lliving around. The project was to design a contemporary public library in Shilaj, Ahmedabad, that serves as a hub for knowledge, culture, and community interaction. The library should feature a reading space, cafeteria, library, and amphitheater, offering a dynamic environment for learning, relaxation, and social gatherings. The focus of this studio was to explore new materials and construction techniques to create a sustainable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space. This studio looks at the role of material in design and architectural expression. Along with the material and structural aspects, function and the user group is also taken into consideration. The form of the building is specific to respond the contoured site. All the levels are made facing the existing lake, creating a different expirience.
01
While designing, the primary consideration was the building’s purpose and its intended users. Given that it is a library, the key focus was on providing a sense of privacy for visitors. The design strategy revolved around creating varying levels within the space. Mezzanine floors were incorporated to distribute the number of readers across different levels, enhancing privacy during reading sessions. Additionally, a semi-open cafeteria/reading space was included to encourage gatherings and discussions. An exhibition area was situated at the -1 level, offering a direct view of the lake. Throughout the design, priority was given to ensuring that all levels enjoy ample natural light and scenic views of the lake.

MIXED HOUSING
The studio project centered on designing a housing society for the middle-income group in Shivranjini, Ahmedabad. Situated amidst a mix of residential and commercial buildings, the site posed a unique challenge. The brief called for a blend of row houses and apartments, drawing inspiration from India’s traditional jointfamily homes that fostered close-knit communities. The design focused on accommodating the evolving needs of modern families while preserving the essence of shared living. Central to the concept was the creation of spaces that encouraged social interaction, essential in collective housing. The architecture aimed to reflect the daily traditions and identities of the residents, merging individual lifestyles with community living. The final design aimed to create a harmonious balance between tradition, modernity, and community in a rapidly evolving urban setting.
05
To accommodate various types of families, the apartment sizes varied accordingly. There were 3BHK apartments and row houses, along with 2BHK and 1BHK apartments. This diversity in housing sizes would cater to families of different dynamics, enhancing the sense of diversity within the community. The inclusion of commercial shops on the building’s facade facing the main street would provide convenience to residents, as they would have easy access to amenities and public services. This thoughtful design approach aimed to create a vibrant and inclusive living environment for all residents.

AANGANWADI
The Aanganwadi is a pivotal community center serving as a hub for early childhood care and education, maternal care, and basic healthcare services. Located in Shilaj, Ahmedabad, this project aims to create a vibrant and inclusive space that not only meets the functional requirements of an Aanganwadi but also reflects the cultural and environmental ethos of the region. The studio looks at the perspective of understanding space and how elements come together to express the characteristics of a place and act as a cohesive hole. The ideas is to create a multifunctional space that serves as an Aanganwadi and a clinic for pregnant and lactating women in the morning and a public gathering space in the evening along with a clinic catering to the basic medical needs of people living nearby.

THE GREAT HOSTEL ROOM
The project was to design a sustainable and functional co-ling hostel unit ( Area 6m X 6m X 9m ) for 4 multidisciplinary students, accommodating a variety of spatial needs within a compact footprint. The main aim was that the unit should promote a sense of community while providing privacy and comfort for individual residents.
Communal spaces such as a kitchenette, dining area, lounge, and study room were to be provided with adequate circulation spaces. The primary material used for the project was brick.

Axonometric diagram
The primary concept involved completely carving out a brick block. To enhance the understanding of various spaces, the design process commenced with the development of several solid-void diagrams. Models and axonometric drawings illustrating space distribution were then created based on these diagrams. The ground floor accommodated a kitchenette, dining area, lounge, and washrooms, while the first and second floors comprised rooms and a study area. The terrace area could serve as a recreational space for students.

WORKS OF LAURIE BAKER AND HANDS-ON WORKSHOP
The collaborative program was designed to delve into the philosophies, ideologies, and works of Laurie Baker. Participants engaged in hands-on workshops to explore various construction materials and learn their techniques. Additionally, documentation of Baker’s renowned buildings provided insights into how his ideologies were manifested in his designs.

CULTURAL NARRATIVES, TAMIL NADU
The program aimed to connect the students with the essence of Indian temple architecture and cultural heritage, developing a sense of gratitude and giving them field-based experience. With the intent to experience the timelessness of the Indian Temple Architecture, three temple towns of Tamil Nadu were chosen for the study; namely, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Chidambaram. The program explores the spiritual, cultural, and ritualistic aspects of temples and analyses their spatial organization as a means of social and spiritual expression.
