SUMMER 2011

Dear parents, students and friends

I

am delighted to be introducing the summer 2011 edition of the newsletter which reflects the diverse range of activities open to students at CVC and celebrates the many interests, skills and talents of both students and staff at the college. This newsletter is a special one for me because it marks the end of 22 very happy years at Cottenham Village College. As I start a new phase of life, retirement, I wanted to say thank you for helping to make my working life here so enjoyable.

there has not been unconditional support. We are very lucky at CVC to have such an interested and engaged group of parents; it is very much appreciated. To have had a small part in shaping the next generation has been a real privilege. With best wishes Chris Williams Deputy Headteacher

To students, both past and present, I’d like to say a very big thanks: you have kept me on my toes, amused me with your wit, enthused me with your energy, amazed me with your creativity and stunned me with your sheer brilliance. Even at your most exasperating, there was never a student that I couldn’t find something positive in - honest!! It is always a real pleasure to meet ex-students in Cambridge and catch up with their lives. To parents and carers: excellent parental support and co-operation have been a particular feature of my time as both Year Head and Deputy Head; I can count in single figures the number of times when

OurHouse COTTENHAM VILLAGE COLLEGE

arch 2011 saw the annual CVC production which, this year, was the musical Our House, featuring the songs of Madness. The play is eight years old and the original London production won the Olivier award for Best New Musical of its year. The story set in Camden, London, centres around the life of Joe Casey as he celebrates his 16th birthday.

The whole cast acted, sang and danced with tremendous energy and conviction in a production directed by Simon Bowen and well received by capacity audiences. The production team is already in the planning stages for the 2012 CVC production!

M

Harry Pledger performed the challenging part of Joe with energy and aplomb, contrasting Joe’s personalities with great skill. He was ably supported by Megan Parker in the role of Sarah, Joe’s girlfriend, who played it with great sensitivity. Ali McNamara and Angus Beauchamp played Joe’s friends Emmo and Lewis, highlighting the comedic nature of the parts, while Katie Peacock and Lucy Matthews made the roles of Sarah’s friends, Billie and Angie, their own.

Fairytale Trip Students from 7R and 7L visited Cottenham primary school in May, reading fairytales they had written (based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest) to the reception class pupils. A great time was had by both the “little” and “big” kids alike! Here is Hannah’s report:

University of Cambridge science master classes

When visiting the colleges it wasn’t so much of a learning experience of things that I had never heard of before, it was more inspirational. I really enjoyed being able to participate in the lectures and found them really interesting and they seemed to trigger a part of my brain that hadn’t fully got going. Now it’s much later and I am still buzzing from the experience and it has made my love of science even greater than it was before.

S

tudents from years 9 and 10 attended the science master classes held during the University of Cambridge science festival. They attended lectures and had a chance to look around several of the colleges.

My favourite two lectures were the ones on astro-physics, as that is a subject that I find fascinating and would love to jump into, and the immune system as that is also a subject I would love to learn more about. My head is whizzing trying to now find answers to: Why does nuclear fusion create energy? Do photons have a mass? Where do neutrons come from? I found the day really interesting and that the university is a great place to study; I would really like to study there in the future. Hannah Roberts

Cup Final 2011 The college’s U16 football team won the district schools cup in a 32 thrilling final against Bassingbourn Village College.

A penalty was awarded to Cottenham very early on through a tackle on Reece Cockbill and Jimmy Chivers netted it in the top left corner. Reece then went on to score another goal as the goalie missed an easy stop. Bassingbourn were then awarded a penalty through a Jack Stone tackle and they netted the shot. Cottenham then struck again through a Reece header. Bassingbourn then scored a very good goal but Cottenham managed to hold on for the win!!

Year 11 Jack Stone, Jimmy Chivers, Lewis Easy, Alec Whiteside, Josh Eake, Peter Nunn, Aaron Males, Matt Green, Ed George, Ashley Brown, Anthony Williams, Reece Cockbill and Andrew Williams. Evan Key, Nico Bishop & Joe Faulkner (played in rounds but not in final).

Year 3 striking and fielding festival Year 10 sports leaders organised and planned a festival based on cricket. Year 3 students rotated around a number of stations practising batting, bowling and fielding skills. They then finished off with some games. The year 10 students were helped out by a group of year 9’s who took to the role very well, with the year 10 students acting as their mentors.

The golden boot in year 9

Year 9 netball team

The year 9 football team made it all the way to the semi-finals this year - a fantastic achievement after losing their first game 61! After scoring the most goals in this competition and getting a hat-trick in the quarters, Jason Hunter picked up the `golden boot` award! Well done to all the lads including: Dom Brady, Adam Braybrooke, Nathan Taylor, Lawrence Morrison, Randall Butler, Dylan Simms, Raheeb Yousaf, Luke Males, Elliot Aldhouse, Ryan Macdonald, Callum Lenk, Cameron Sharpe, Connor Shelley, Jack Tunbridge and Liam Purser.

We have been very pleased this year because we managed to get two netball teams competing at the district tournament. During the tournament both teams played well with the A team reaching the semi-finals. They were, unfortunately, knocked out by a goal in the last few seconds of the game.

Berlin trip A

National trampolinist We are pleased to report that Naomi Waldock is now competing nationally in trampolining galas! She has qualified for the national finals in Birmingham and we wish her all the best with her training! She says “I would love to go to the 2016 Olympics in Rio, and not just to watch!”

t the beginning of the Easter holidays, 40 students from years 10 and 11 travelled to Berlin for the annual GCSE history trip. The group stayed in central Berlin and toured many historical and cultural highlights of the city, including the Reichstag, the Berlin Wall memorial centre, Checkpoint Charlie, Sachsenhausen, the Olympic Stadium and the TV Tower. They still found time for some shopping, bratwursts and the odd slice of cake! It was another fantastic trip and an ideal opportunity for students to see a vibrant city that has experienced so many of the 20th century’s significant events. The group were a pleasure to look after. Watch out for details of next year’s trip soon…

DT primary challenge days Students from Cottenham, Willingham and Waterbeach primary schools enjoyed the design and technology challenge days. The students took part in two group activities which involved designing, making and evaluation skills. They made a hovercraft using simple electronics which they raced in teams in the hall and also a paper rocket which was launched over the millennium garden.

Duke of Edinburgh‘s bronze award This year there have been 47 year 9 students enrolled for the Duke of Edinburgh’s bronze award. In glorious sunshine the group completed a training walk around the beautiful setting of Wimpole Hall, followed by a training weekend of 35-40 km of walking around Audley End. For this the students had to be self-sufficient, carrying their own food, sleeping bags, stoves and tents. A real highlight was the group who prepared a wonderful stir fry complete with a range of fresh vegetables. More recently the group have planned and completed their final expeditions to the Peak District. The scheme this year was run by Mr Fordham and Dr Millington. The commitment and respect shown by the year 9's have been exceptional and in many aspects far better than students who complete the award at an older age. Attendance at the numerous after-school training sessions has been excellent and the majority of students have been able to find activities to support the other areas of the award. Thank you to all the volunteers who had given up their weekends to assist with the scheme. We would be delighted to hear from parents who may be able to help with the award in the next academic year. In particular we would benefit from additional volunteers to assist with the expedition weekends or financial support from local companies to purchase specific items of kit.

MOCK TRIAL

The mock trial team from year 8 and 9 took part in the regional final of the mock trial competition in May. Team members gave excellent performances as lawyers, witnesses, court officials and magistrates and, although we were disappointed not to go through to the national final, the event was thoroughly enjoyable.

Leavers’day

COTTENHAM VILLAGE COLLEGE

The year 11 leavers had clearly invested a lot of time and effort in their costumes and it was great to see everyone having fun! It was only after the leavers’ assembly that the smiles seemed to fade a little as the end was near. Thank you to all staff who made the day special and kept the students in line; the police outfits certainly helped! We hope the leavers will make the most of the opportunities that come their way in future.

Wexability In May, year 10 students were involved in a conference day focusing on preparation for work experience. The students came to school in business dress and followed a programme designed to help prepare them for the world of work. This included setting personal goals, health and

safety awareness, interview techniques, identifying employability skills and preparing personal statements. Students voted within their form groups to find the most appropriately dressed male and female, who received a small prize and certificate. This was a most successful day, with some great feedback from the year group.

CVC students represent Cambridgeshire in regional carnival project In June, CVC students represented Cambridgeshire in the opening parade for the new look Strawberry Fair. During workshops with dancer Marianna Whitehouse, the students learnt a hip-hop samba routine that wowed crowds during the parade through the streets of Cambridge. The students joined young people from Impington and Ely who were chosen to take part in the exciting project led by the UK Centre for Carnival Arts which will be part of the London 2012 Festival. The project, called Carnival Crossroads, involves 500 participants from schools and community groups across the east region working with international arts towards events in 5 different cities. Youth Gam es

Plus n June, students from the hearing support centre took part in the Youth Games Plus event at St. Ivo outdoor centre. It was a fantastic day with students from nineteen schools across Cambridgeshire taking part. This year hearing impaired students from the college competed against other schools in four athletic events – 60 metre sprint, javelin, shot put and long jump. Everyone took part with great enthusiasm and gave lots of support and encouragement to each other. They also enjoyed a great amount of success as all our students participated in each event and received medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. A thoroughly enjoyable day!

GCSE Dance O

Showcase

ne evening in May, twelve GCSE dance students performed their choreography and performance work for a small audience, in preparation for their GCSE practical examination. The work was very well received by those in attendance who were impressed with the level of maturity and complexity of the students’ choreography. Of particular note were those students who had no formal training in dance until year 9 and had progressed to a high standard, displaying an understanding of the principles of both choreography and performance.
