DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

Hello and a warm welcome to our July edition of our monthly magazine, Dorset Business Focus. As always, the magazine is packed with interesting articles and news from the Dorset business community. One of our key roles as an accredited Chamber is to provide an export documentation service and we help businesses all across Dorset and beyond move goods across the globe. We also provide training and advice for business who are keen to or are already working on an international basis. Identifying new international trade opportunities can offer businesses significant opportunities for growth and we are very keen to encourage and support Dorset businesses who are considering new markets overseas. One of the key benefits we can offer businesses looking at new international markets are our connections with British overseas accredited Chambers. These Chambers can offer great support and connections to any business moving in to a new market and I am delighted to announce our new partnership with

the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore, with Singapore being seen as the gateway to Southeast Asia. This partnership will see us promote opportunities in Singapore as well as link with the Singapore Chamber to provide one to one support for businesses looking to trade in Singapore. The British Chamber of Commerce Singapore are very keen to reach out to UK businesses and we will be working closely with Executive Director David Kelly. Please do get in touch if this is of interest or you’d like to reach out to any other international or indeed you’d like to find out more about our export advice and support. I’ve always believed that Dorset’s extraordinary business talent and entrepreneurship has the potential to do amazing things on the global stage. I’ve been lucky enough to see first-hand our county’s innovation and enterprise, working with some of Dorset’s most ambitious business leaders – leaders who, like me, see an international future for Dorset Chamber and its inspirational members. It’s with this exciting vision that I’d like to celebrate the Chamber’s recent partnership and twinning with Singapore Chamber – the first step in Dorset’s global reach, and the start of an incredibly exciting journey into the Asian market. With this international expansion comes myriad opportunities for Dorset’s businesses – facilitated by us, the Chamber, and Singapore as a collaborative team. The recent international success of Dorset’s very own Field International is testament to the strength of this budding partnership. Dorset born and bred, and with their HQ in Poole, the ambitious company opened Field International Technologies in Singapore in February 2019 – a powerful step in their global expansion plans that enables them to offer a manufacturing and repair-based service to South East Asia and beyond. The Chamber and I want all our members to have at their fingertips the same global expansion opportunities and believe the Chamber’s journey onto the international stage marks the beginning of huge success for many. I feel incredibly proud to have driven this very important step and I am excited to see what the future holds for our business community. @DorsetChamber

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

The sky really is the limit for Field International! Field International Group are a great example of a leading UK ambitious international business expanding across the globe, with a manufacturing plant established in Singapore. Founded in Dorset in 1995, Field International supports and supplies most of the major airlines with licensed aircraft tooling and ground support equipment, employing 50 highly-qualified personnel in Dorset and fastapproaching 200 employees worldwide. Through ambitious global expansion targets and a focus on distributed manufacturing, they have experienced 30 per cent year-on-year growth right up until the pandemic hit, and are proud to enjoy an impressive international presence in key areas across the world. Driving business from their UK headquarters, their global expansion strategy has seen them develop sales and manufacturing facilities not only in Singapore, but also China and Spain, and they now trade in over 50 countries worldwide. Significantly, despite the pandemic, they have spent the last 18 months expanding their

presence even further, taking them to the USA, Abu Dhabi in the Middle East, and Chennai in India. Ultimately, Field’s aim is to create multiple manufacturing sites and sales offices across the globe, enabling them to develop local customer relationships in all of the world’s continents. By setting up sales and manufacturing facilities worldwide, they are also able to boost the area’s employment and economy and, in the case of their manufacturing plant in Singapore, help supply South East Asia and beyond, giving yet another opportunity outside of China. By continuing to drive the business forward with huge ambitions despite the devastating blow of the pandemic, they have been able to prepare for the next stage of accelerated growth; they confidently predict to be back to 30 per cent yearon-year growth within 12 months, and anticipate a return to accelerated growth thereafter.

When going to new international markets,

Their real strength comes from stepping into new international markets where others have failed, giving Field the experience, tech and expertise to strengthen their international foothold. Singapore has been a vital part of this journey and global expansion. Field International Group business development manager Richard Marples stated: “When going to new international markets, working with the British Chamber for that area offers huge support and offers a great welcome. We’ve worked closely with the Singapore Chamber for many years as we’ve established our Singapore operations.”

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS

Bank of England acts to get inflation down You probably don’t need the Bank of England to tell you that prices have been rising sharply. The annual rate of inflation — how much the things that people buy have gone up in price over the past year — was 7 per cent in March. That is clearly some way above the 2 per cent target for inflation that the government has set for the Bank of England. Here’s why inflation is so high and how we are going to get it back down to target. People have been buying more goods as Covid restrictions have eased in the UK and in most other countries. That higher demand has pushed up on prices. At the same time, there have been supply issues, with many businesses having problems getting hold of enough goods to sell. For example, recent lockdowns have cut production in China — a major source of the world’s supply of raw materials and finished goods. And many of the contacts I speak to at businesses here in Dorset report that their shipping costs have become very expensive over the past couple of years because the pandemic disrupted the normal flow of freight ships around the world. These and other supply problems have all caused goods prices to rise, especially for goods coming into the UK from abroad. Even more strikingly, big increases in oil and gas prices have pushed up the costs of transport, heating homes and offices, and powering factories. The impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on oil and gas prices means there could be a further rise in the energy price cap in October. Taking all these things together, we expect inflation to rise further — to around 10 per cent later this year. With prices going up much faster than pay, the cost of living is a very big problem for very many people. We know that high inflation is hitting poorer households the hardest.

The Bank is taking action to ensure inflation gets back down to target. This will reduce the cost of living pressure on households and support businesses to invest and create jobs. We can’t do anything about the supply problems or the higher energy prices that are currently pushing up inflation. But we do have ways to get inflation down over the next few years — mainly by using interest rates. Higher interest rates make it more expensive for people to borrow money to spend and encourage them to save, so they tend to spend less. And when people spend less, prices tend to rise more slowly. The Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has raised Bank Rate — the rate that influences many other interest rates in the UK — from 0.1 per cent to 0.25 per cent in December, to 0.5 per cent in February, and then to 0.75 per cent in March. In early May, the MPC raised Bank Rate to one per cent, and they said they may need to raise it further in the coming months. Higher interest rates will, over time, reduce inflationary pressure in the economy. And it’s unlikely that the prices of oil, gas, and imported goods will continue to rise as rapidly as they have. We also don’t think that the demand for goods will continue to rise as fast, partly because the higher cost of living will reduce the amount of money people have

to spend. Some of the supply problems that businesses are facing are likely to ease too. All told, we expect inflation to begin to fall next year and return to the two per cent target in around two years’ time. With the help of our contacts in Dorset and across the UK, I and the rest of the Bank’s agents will make sure that the MPC has all the information they need to make the right decisions and get inflation down.

Andrew Holder, Bank of England Agent for Central Southern England

AFC Bournemouth’s Community Sports Trust visits South Africa AFC Bournemouth’s Community Sports Trust coaches have been out in South Africa working on a football project in both Johannesburg and Durban. The trip was in partnership with Switched On Christian School, with coaches also given the opportunity to visit local community projects in the areas they visited. Having landed in Johannesburg first, staff worked with teachers at Destiny Christian School and looked at what makes an effective coach. They then put on sessions with students at Rabboni Christian School and Saints Christian School, involving player development classes on and off the training ground. Away from the schools, members of the Community Sports Trust then visited a local project, with one man following in the footsteps

It resembled a foodbank and coaches were keen to get stuck in and help, making bread on the day they visited. Following the community visit, the coaches visited Zenzele Community School and The Kings School, playing games and football with the younger children, before handing out football kit to the older pupils. After some fantastic work in Johannesburg, the staff went on to Durban, visiting the local high school for coaching and then taking sessions with the players at Stella FC. CPD sessions were carried out for the coaches at Richard Bay Christian School, while Howick High School and Ashton College saw their students benefit from more Bournemouth expertise. Local club, Young Chiefs, were also paid a visit, with match kits handed out for them to wear in upcoming games. Following the trip, AFC Bournemouth’s Head of Community Steve Cuss shared his delight at its success.

Free digital learning platform for primary school pupils Internet Matters has launched Digital Matters, a free online safety and media literacy education platform helping pupils deal with the issues they are most likely to face in the digital world. The platform, created with support from digital security company ESET, will build the critical thinking skills they need to tackle a range of issues such as fake news and misinformation, as well as teach children about cyberbullying, online grooming, peer pressure and keeping their personal information secure. Specifically aimed at primary school pupils in Years 5 and 6, Digital Matters has been designed to enable parents and teachers to work together to educate and support children at the age they start spending more time in online environments. The lessons see children being asked to navigate a number of different situations they are likely to encounter online. Based on real-life scenarios, they will be able to discuss the issues in class and learn how to make the right choices in a safe space. It comes as new research of UK parents shows how there has been significant increases within 12 months in both concerns and experiences of primary school aged children across a range of different online safety issues. The number of parents of six to 10-yearolds who said their child had been affected by exposure to fake news, misinformation, or disinformation more than doubled compared to the previous year. More than twice as many children of the same age experienced

online trolling or abuse from strangers. There were also significant increases in children aged six to 10 having direct experience of contact with strangers online, peer pressure to do things they wouldn’t normally do and giving away personal information online. Teachers can share companion resources with parents from the platform so parents can continue the learning at home, supporting a joined-up approach to online safety education between teacher and parent. It also allows them to teach online safety and media literacy in a digital environment, with the flexibility of having offline materials to suit different teaching styles. Ghislaine Bombusa, head of Digital at Internet Matters, who led the creation of the platform, said: “There is a growing need to ensure young people not only stay safe online but have the media literacy skills they need to navigate their increasingly complex digital world. “At a critical time in their development, we hope to help schools teach young people these skills in a supportive environment where they can practice making choices in realistic situations, all on an interactive digital platform. “We also know the important role that

parents play in keeping their children safe online, so the programme encourages their involvement, making sure that they feel empowered to support their children as they stumble across difficult situations online.” Teachers and parents can access the Digital Matters platform for free, where content will be updated regularly with online safety topics in line with the Relationships Education curriculum and the UKCIS Education for a Connected World Framework. Julie Berriff, UK Marketing Director at ESET said: “We’re delighted to continue our support for Internet Matters with this new innovative learning platform and are committed to helping as many children as possible. www.internetmatters.org/digital-matters www.eset.com/uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS

Memes and your marketing strategy With the average person spending an hour and a half a day on social media, you want to ensure that your target audience sees your brand. You can do this by incorporating memes into your social media strategy. Memes are visually easily digestible content that can resonate with your audience. What is a meme? In the 2000s, the concept of modern-day memes became a cultural phenomenon (although the word meme was coined back in the 1970s by Richard Dawkins). While memes can exist in short-form videos or GIFs, a meme is usually an image with some text added to it. They are typically funny, entertaining, and easy to consume. Due to their simplistic format, memes resonate well with people. They are easy to make and are sharable, and relatable. The wonderful thing about memes is that there is no such thing as plagiarism, so if you see a great meme, you can make your own using that image. Why you should use memes in your marketing strategy As marketers, it is difficult to constantly create new content for social media. This is where injecting some memes into your marketing can help. Memes are easy to do and save a load of time as most of the demanding work is already done. Use memes and you are almost guaranteed to get impressions, likes, shares, and comments. A meme allows the brand to engage with its customers without appearing overly salesy. There are two golden rules for using memes in marketing: Know your memes – Start by looking at memes. Make sure you understand the meme (and its context) before you use it. Check your competitors and see if they are using them. Know your audience personas – You need to consider your target audience. Your memes should match the audience’s likes and beliefs. If you go against their beliefs, you could lose your audience. Consider age too – will the meme be relatable to them? How can memes help you with social media marketing? If you want a relatively easy and quick way to grow your following and reach on social media, then

memes should become part of your strategy. Here are just some easy wins meme marketing can help you with. Expand your reach on social media Memes are great for expanding your reach on social media. Anyone can share them, and they all lead back to your business so you can quickly grow and scale your business. Building your brand awareness If your meme includes a reference to your brand or market in which you operate, you can build awareness of your brand to a load of new audiences. Customer interaction Memes work well for your already existing customer and follower base. Are you struggling to get interaction on social media? If so, a meme is a suitable place to start. Look at the meme below – a still from 300 and an accompanying quote

which was posted on a sewing brand’s page on Facebook. The status was simply “Does anyone else feel like this?” A simple conversation starter (and shareable content). Establishing your presence If your business is on social media, it wants to establish its presence and communicate with its audience. Memes help show a fun and human side to the company. Memes and copyright: Can I use any image to make a meme? Copyright around memes is a lot more complicated than we think and is certainly not black and white. If somebody uses a meme on their personal social media account, it is unlikely that they will be prosecuted, but big businesses could be issued a cease-and-desist letter or sued for using the image without permission. Memes often use stills from movies. The copyright of these images belongs to the film companies although, if used on a personal social media page, is very unlikely to find the poster sued. However, when businesses use the image and turn it into a meme as part of their advertising campaign, then they could be seen as profiting from the image and the film company may feel that is a reason to sue the business. We suggest that if you think it may cause issues for the company, then don’t use the meme and create your own fun memes without fear of recriminations. www.localiq.co.uk

Lester Aldridge advises McCarthy Stone on flagship retirement village South coast law firm Lester Aldridge has successfully advised national retirement housing developer McCarthy Stone on the purchase of Wimborne Market in Dorset, following the grant of planning permission earlier in 2022. Development has now started at the site, where McCarthy Stone is delivering a £41million housing scheme consisting of 67 high quality one- and two-bedroom extra care apartments, 32 extra care bungalows and two-storey chalets, as well as nine open market houses. The scheme will be McCarthy Stone’s first urban retirement village in the UK, and will feature a wellbeing hub, circular fitness route, vegetable garden, village green, bistro and dining areas all paired with the support of 24-hour flexible care. The developer is looking to create a ready-made supportive and vibrant community for its residents to access, whilst retaining their independence and involvement in the wider local area. Dorset Council predicts the number of older people in the county will rise by 60 per cent by 2033. Following the recent levelling-up White Paper, a new government task force was launched on the issue of older people’s housing, designed to look at ways to provide better choice, quality and security of housing for older people. It has been estimated that some three million pensioners would like to downsize but cannot do so because of the lack of suitable housing, with only some 7,000 homes for the elderly being built each year.

Ed Garcia, divisional land director (Southern) for McCarthy Stone, said: “We are delighted to be delivering our first urban retirement village to the historic market town of Wimborne Minster. We had a great team of professionals working with us, managed by senior land manager James Day, in particular Lester Aldridge who represented us so brilliantly, Re-Format Architects for creating such an amazing scheme and the in-house development team at McCarthy Stone. We are grateful to the George family for agreeing to sell the site to us and allowing us the opportunity to deliver our concept scheme so

close to our head office in Bournemouth.” Lester Aldridge’s team was led by Mark Benham, head of Real Estate Group, who said: “There is a huge demand for all types of housing in East Dorset, including specialist housing for older people. McCarthy Stone’s scheme will help to increase the housing choices available for the local community and will free up family homes for the next generation. Lester Aldridge has advised McCarthy Stone on hundreds of its schemes and it was a pleasure to advise the company on the acquisition of such a historic site.” www.lesteraldridge.com

with Frettens Solicitors

Some commercial tenants have a right to create another lease below theirs. This is known as subletting or underletting. Essentially, the landlord lets to the tenant, who sublets to the subtenant. As a tenant, whether you can sublet or not depends on how the lease is drafted. Generally, you can sublet a whole property if you obtain landlord consent first. Subletting of part of the property may be permitted where there are separate spaces within the property. For example, a tenant of 10 self-contained office spaces may be allowed to sublet one of those spaces. One benefit of subletting is that you can increase your income if your business is struggling or if you can’t afford rent payments. Alternatively, if your business is booming, you may wish to sublet and move to bigger premises. The biggest risk is if the subtenant does not pay because you may well be relying on the subtenant’s rent to be able to pay the landlord. Without this, there could be big issues for you and your business. If you would like to sublet your property, you will need to: • Check the lease to see whether subletting is permitted • Check whether any conditions need to be met • Obtain consent from the landlord Even if you sublet the property, it will be you who is ultimately responsible for any terms breached by the subtenant or if the property is damaged by the subtenant. Whether you can or cannot sublet will depend on your lease so I would recommend instructing a solicitor to review it for you. With a little steer in the right direction, you could actually save yourself a lot of time and money by getting the correct advice right from the start. rramshaw@frettens.co.uk 01202 499255 www.frettens.co.uk

Jo Kelly, Credit Analyst at MSP Capital

MSP Capital expands underwriting team Property finance specialist MSP Capital has expanded its underwriting team to champion its growth in the development and bridging loan market. The south coast based lender has made two strategic appointments to reflect its continued growth in the property industry, with £165m of funding released in 2022 so far. Business development manager Mike Townsend is tasked with delivering new funding opportunities in Hampshire and West Sussex while credit analyst Jo Kelly, pictured, will support the business with asset lending and financial analysis. Both new recruits are experienced industry insiders. Their arrivals come as the property market continues to do well despite the wider economic context. Mike spent 35 years with a top five high street bank, and the past 20 as a relationship manager providing funding solutions for real estate clients. He has structured and supported property deals to enable a variety of residential, commercial and investment projects, many involving bridging finance. Mike said: “As part of the underwriting and business development team, my role is to spread more awareness of the MSP Capital brand, mainly across Hampshire and West Sussex, and seek out new funding opportunities to help our continued growth aspirations.” Jo has more than 25 years of industry experience having worked for asset finance providers and, like Mike, a top five high street bank. She was most recently a senior relationship manager helping Dorset businesses with asset finance requirements, a position she held for seven years. At MSP Capital, she will apply her skills in asset lending and analysis to assist both head of Broker Relations Arian Manouchehri and Underwriting and Credit manager Lee Merrifield. Jo said: “MSP Capital is increasingly recognised for its success in combining /company/dorset-chamber/

an entrepreneurial lending approach with robust diligence and checks to identify and progress tailored solutions. I look forward to bringing my experience to bear to help more clients complete deals and make developments happen on the ground.” Welcoming Jo and Mike, MSP Capital’s managing director Martin Higgins said: “A large part of our ongoing success in the market is due to our ability to build strong relationships with our clients. That is the reason we see our volume of enquiries, applications and completions all going up. “Strengthening our team with two more industry experts, both with vast experience, will enable us to continue to service our clients on a personal level, while our loan book grows.” According to Statista, the UK real estate sector generated more than £68.6 billion in turnover in 2021, created or maintained 551,000 jobs, and is set to see 205,000 new houses completed in 2022. The overall value of residential property in the UK is put at £7.2 trillion. The latest ONS figures also show increasing demand for property with the average house price rising 1.1 per cent in April and now standing at £286,079. That is more than 10 per cent up on a year ago. At the same time, the most recent UK brokers’ Bridging Trends report tracked an 8.5 per cent rise in the value of bridging loans in the first three months of 2022 compared with the same period last year. Reasons include heightened demand for investment properties and funding for chain break transactions, a means to avoid the need to sell one home before buying another. www.mspcapital.co.uk

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / HEALTH & WELLBEING

Addressing men’s health Xanthe Grace, our Health and Wellbeing coordinator, focuses on men’s health and why it is so important that there is greater focus in this area. When it comes to prevention and early detection, men’s health often takes a back seat to women’s health. However, research shows that, compared to women, men are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, take more risks and generally lead less healthy lifestyles. In addition, men are more likely to put off routine check-ups and also delay seeing a doctor for symptoms of a health problem. Compared to working-aged women, workingaged men are also less likely to have a regular doctor and health insurance. The good news is that many of the health conditions and diseases that men face can be prevented or treated. The key is early detection, as it generally increases the chances of successful treatment. To help men to understand the importance of early intervention, it is vital to understand their risk factors and how they can improve their overall health. The most common conditions affecting men are heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes and cancer (in particular prostate, testicular, and colon cancer). Heart Disease Risk factors for heart disease include: • High blood cholesterol levels • High blood pressure • Diabetes • Obesity • Cigarette smoking • Physical inactivity • Increasing age • Family history of early onset of heart disease

It is important to raise awareness around the fact that these feelings are hard-wired into men and that it is normal to be worried. However, it should always be stressed that visiting a doctor as soon as you begin to have symptoms will result in the best chance of a positive outcome. Shockingly, there is no men’s health strategy in the UK, unlike other countries such as Australia and Ireland. In March 2022, this issue was debated in Parliament and it was outlined why men’s health needs to have a specific focus. There were some shocking statistics given, including: • One in five men in the UK do not live until they are 65, with an increasing gender age gap • Thirteen men take their own lives every day • Men in Kensington and Chelsea live 27 years longer on average than those in some parts of northern England • One man dies of prostate cancer every 45 minutes • Nearly 6,000 men die an alcohol-related death every year • Two thirds of men are overweight or obese

economically disadvantaged areas are dying from a whole range of illnesses far earlier than men who live in more affluent areas. There is no innate biological reason for this, therefore a joined-up approach is needed. There are a number of things that can be done to improve this situation such as campaigns that encourage men to access the health system. Men’s health should be approached from a positive perspective, basing it on need. Finally, a 10-year men’s health strategy is needed, such as the one developed in Australia, that provides a robust, holistic framework focusing on a preventative, rather than a reactive, approach. Men’s health seems to be pushed away in a corner and, in the meantime, the NHS continues to creak under the burdens of unhealthy lifestyles. By having a positive focus and a strategy around men’s health, it is hoped that it will improve some of the huge geographical and gender disparities in modern-day UK healthcare. www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/events

Part of the problem is the current focus on the outcomes of poor men’s health, rather than addressing the underlying causes and barriers, and how to make the health system more responsive. If suicide, alcoholism and obesity are addressed as separate issues, it is overlooked that they are often a result of similar circumstances. It also needs to be examined why there is such a vast health disparity in the UK. Men who live in

Preventative measures: • Reduce saturated fat • Increase high fibre foods such as fruit and vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds • Limit alcohol intake, try to abstain for at least three days a week and no more than 14 units per week • Stop smoking • Increase physical activity Cancer Risk factors for cancer can include: • Overweight or obesity • High fat diet • Low fibre diet • Excessive alcohol intake • Physical inactivity Studies conducted by the Cleveland Clinic in America have found that men often convince themselves their condition will improve on its own and cite that they don’t want to bother a doctor in the meantime. Superhero syndrome was also mentioned, in that men are much more averse than women at feeling vulnerable. The main factors that prevented men from visiting a doctor were fear and concerns about how they would cope with a worrying diagnosis. more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

finance with Peter Harding

Rising to the business challenges of increased rates and inflation Just as the Covid crisis begins to fade, a number of other significant challenges for entrepreneurs have presented themselves. Looming largest is runaway inflation, which sees the Bank of England attempting to control it by raising interest rates. The combination of sharply rising prices with successive increases in interest rates has put pressure on business owners for two reasons. Firstly, the cost of doing business – buying raw materials, paying wages and general overheads – has shot up. Secondly, rising interest rates mean the cost of business loans will go up, which restricts financing options for companies, especially those already in debt. What can you do if your business is trying to deal with rising prices? Many businesses are contemplating – or have already taken – drastic action to mitigate the impact of inflation. According to a survey of 985 businesses, published in February this year by the British Chambers of Commerce, 73 per cent of firms said they are increasing prices in response to rising costs. Another issue for businesses to contend with is rising energy prices. Unlike consumers, businesses do not have a price cap to protect them, and they face spiralling costs in the months ahead. According to research commissioned by NatWest in Sept 2021, out of 500 small to medium size business owners surveyed, 70 per cent believe that the cost of their energy bill impedes the growth of their business. In these challenging times, it’s important for businesses to look carefully at their expenditure and ensure the financial planning arrangements in place continue to remain up to date and relevant. Antony Batty & Company celebrates 25th birthday Insolvency practitioner and turnaround specialist Antony Batty is celebrating 25 years in business as licensed insolvency practitioners. Over the past 25 years, the company has grown from one to five offices with five insolvency practitioners and over 40 employees. Established in 1997 by Antony Batty, in what he calls a ‘moment of madness’, it has seen many changes over the years. At the beginning, Antony was joined by Hugh Jesseman, who gave up his successful career at Ernst & Young to join the firm. The two of them remained the only employees for the first three years. The company’s first case was the liquidation of Davzest Limited in June 1997. It was appointed to its 2,500th case in 2021. As the company grew, more partners joined: Stephen Evans, now a consultant with the firm, joined in 2007; Hugh qualified as a licensed insolvency practitioner in 2004 and was made a partner in 2011; Lawrence King and Matt Waghorn became partners and licensed insolvency practitioners at Antony Batty’s Thames Valley sister company in 2021; and the most recent addition was Claire Howell, partner and licensed insolvency practitioner. The Bournemouth office opened in 2020 as the company’s client base and demand for its services grew in Dorset. Over the years, there have been happy and sad times. There have been several staff weddings and births, and sadly, two of the company’s past employees have passed /company/dorset-chamber/

away: David Pallen who was a consultant and Michelle Barthel, its third employee, who passed away at a very young age in 2016 after a tough battle with cancer. Both are remembered with fondness and sadness in equal measure. The company has dealt with many interesting assignments over the years, notably the administrations of the international retail brands, Deschamps, Missoni London and Zilli UK; travel companies including Diamond Shortbreak Holidays and Isle of Wight Tours; the first debt for equity swap Company Voluntary Arrangement of Orchard Furniture PLC; and, more recently, winding up Venture Capital Trusts for Downing and Triplepoint. Antony said: “Having run my own business for 25 years, I understand the emotional and financial roller coaster that business owners ride on, which of course includes highs and lows. I hope that my own experiences make me more empathetic towards directors and owners of business who are facing business difficulties, often through no fault of their own, for example, Brexit and the pandemic. “Now we look forward to the next 25 years. The life of licensed insolvency practitioners is exciting and ever changing, and whatever happens, we will always be here for businesses and individuals for when it isn’t business as usual.” www.antonybatty.com

Charity expands support across Dorset Dorset Mind has announced it has expanded its ecotherapy service, ‘Eco in Mind,’ by launching a new allotment plot in Weymouth. Eco in Mind began life in Dorchester by offering its residents practical support whilst offering a service and a safe space for those struggling with their mental health. The outcomes are phenomenal – when asked, 100 per cent of participants report an increase in their mood from the start to the end of the sessions, and 80 per cent of participants (attending since Jan 22) claim they have seen an improvement in their mental wellbeing. After huge success in Dorchester, the new service offers the people of Weymouth a chance to build their confidence, self-esteem and resilience whilst connecting them with their surroundings and their communities. Working on the allotments as a volunteer or participant will help them discover the benefits of being outside and working with nature. As well as growing bedding and other herbaceous plants, the project also grows and harvests numerous types of fruits and vegetables which are then donated to local food banks for families in the area who may need them most. Over the last year, food from the allotments helped support over 200 families in Dorchester and the charity hopes to repeat this in Weymouth. This gives the project an additional purpose that the local community can benefit from. Dorset Mind CEO Linda O’Sullivan said: “Ecotherapy is somewhat of an unsung hero when it comes to a more holistic and ‘hands on’ form of therapy for mental health. Ecotherapy is known to improve physical and mental health whilst also positively impacting mood – and reducing stress and anger. You could also say it’s a form of mindfulness. “Additionally, Eco in Mind provides its service users with a live project, which is constantly changing and growing, meaning that our participants are actively caring and nurturing something; all whilst learning how to actively do the same for their own mental health and wellbeing.” Eco in Mind project coordinator, Dan Bradshaw, added: “The new Weymouth site is great. The best part about it is that we are at the beginning, which means that our volunteers and participants can see the transformation from what started as an overgrown field to what will be a beautiful space over the coming months and years, thanks to their arduous work and commitment. There are other plots like ours, an orchard, some woodland, and forest school and there will be some classrooms and kitchen for making a product to sell to pay for the running of the site, so it is all exciting.” Dr Andy Mayers, principal more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

academic at Bournemouth University and Dorset Mind patron said: “I am so delighted to see this expansion of our ecotherapy projects at Dorset Mind. There are so many positives in using nature to improve wellbeing, including being more mindful of our environment. This is something close to my own heart, having recently transformed our own garden into a haven for wildlife and growing our own produce. The result is very uplifting for my own wellbeing.” The Eco in Mind team offers weekly sessions in Dorchester on Monday and Thursday mornings from 10:30am, and afternoons from 12pm; and Wednesday mornings from 9am and afternoons at 2pm in Weymouth. If you are interested in participating or would like to know more about Eco in Mind, email: ecoinmind@dorsetmind.uk and one of the team will be more than happy to help you. Or, if you wanted to help run the sessions, the charity welcomes volunteers to work on the project and help deliver this life-changing service. Dorset Mind would like to take this opportunity to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the project’s founders and benefactors Mark and Claire Meyers of Meyers Estate Agents for creating and funding this project in its infancy. Originally known as The GAP Project, their support enabled the charity’s mission to support and improve the mental health of Dorset residents. Dorset Mind delivers mental health education, training, and 1-2-1 and group support for adults and young people across Dorset. www.dorsetmind.uk/help-and-support

What are T Levels and why are they important for business in Dorset?

T Levels herald one of the biggest reforms to qualifications for 16-19 year olds in England for many years. With a staggered introduction of 23 new two-year courses (due to complete in September 2023) T Levels combine classroom learning, practical learning and a substantial 45-day quality-led industry placement and are equivalent to three A Levels (attracting UCAS points in a similar way). T levels are becoming a significant choice option for students post GCSE and will sit alongside apprenticeships, A Levels and other post 16 qualifications. T Levels are based on the same standards as apprenticeships but differ in the students they will attract. T Levels prepare students for work, further training or further study whilst the 80 per cent on-the-job element of an apprenticeship is more suited to those students who are ready to enter the workforce at 16. One of the standout features of the T Level course offer is the involvement of business in its creation, development and implementation. The offer has been developed with direct involvement from employers and businesses to ensure that course content meets the needs of industry and strongly prepares students for work. The industry placement element offers employers early access to upcoming local workforce talent. You will see the student working in your business and can consider first-hand if their skills, knowledge and attitude may be a good fit for your company in the future. The placement will also offer the opportunity to develop in-house mentoring skills, provide extra resource and potentially offer new ideas which may encourage the consideration of new and alternative approaches. At Weymouth College, we are now opening applications for September 2023 start T Levels in Education and Childcare and Health and Science (Adult Nursing). Would you like to work with us to craft the high-quality industry placement elements for these courses ensuring they work hard for both you and our first wave T level students? /company/dorset-chamber/

new Range Rover is currently available at Hendy from £99,375. Verdict: The new Range Rover sits confidently in a sea of great competitors, but why compete where nothing can compare? Land Rover sits its own category of modern British luxury, with confidence, clever design, and intelligent engineering. Now, don’t get us wrong – it’s not the most affordable SUV out there (prices start at £81,785). But, with a premium model like this, you’re paying for more than just a car to get you from A to B. With innovation across the board, you’re ticking boxes and exceeding expectations in every aspect. We definitely recommend adding the new Range Rover to your shortlist! www.hendy.co.uk

Closing the gender PPE gap

Mayor Cllr David Kelsey and former mayor Cllr Susan Phillips

Mayors commend hotel’s new facilities Bournemouth’s incoming and outgoing mayors have heaped praise on a host of new accessible facilities installed by the Marsham Court Hotel. In a project costing £160k, the familyowned Marsham Court has become the first UK hotel to install a fully-equipped Changing Places toilet. The hotel, on Bournemouth’s East Cliff, also has a new sensory room, wheelchair lift into the hotel, laundry facilities, swimming pool hoist and two new accessible guest rooms with wet rooms, specialist beds and ceiling hoists. According to the national Changing Places Consortium, which campaigns for more Changing Places toilets, an estimated 250,000 children and adults in the UK would benefit from the use of a Changing Places toilet, which include a hoist, an adult size changing bench and generous space for a disabled person and up to two carers. Yet, as of 2020, there were just 1,500 in the UK – and just 16 in the whole of Dorset. The Marsham Court Hotel secured a £70,000 grant from Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council’s post-covid Bounce Back Fund which it more than doubled to create its raft of accessible facilities. Cutting the ribbon on the new wheelchair lift at the front of the hotel, new Bournemouth mayor Cllr Bob Lawton called the provisions “market-leading”. He said: “I would like to thank the family and staff at the Marsham Court who have worked tirelessly, both through the pandemic and afterwards, to provide such wonderful facilities, which have been received so well, both locally and nationally. “I would also like to thank Cllr Philip Broadhead and his team at BCP Council who have worked to ensure that grants such as this have been distributed to businesses within the BCP area to more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

aid them in their recovery from the pandemic.” Rosie Radwell, whose family have owned the Marsham Court Hotel for over 30 years, said: “We are incredibly proud of our new facilities, which are already proving very popular with our guests and also the many local people who regularly enjoy the hotel as a place to meet work colleagues, attend events and spend time with friends and family. “Accessibility and the way in which we cater for all our guests – including those who need carers for their personal needs – is vital and was made painfully clear to us when our mother Jennie Deavin was in the final stages of her battle with cancer. “We want to make sure people can come to Bournemouth knowing their comfort and needs have been considered, from the toilets they use, to the bed they sleep in, to specialist laundry services they might require and even the chance to join their families in the pool.” Cllr Philip Broadhead, deputy leader and cabinet member for Development, Growth and Regeneration at BCP Council, said: “Over the course of the pandemic we issued over £250m of support to businesses across the BCP region – and our focus was always to try and ensure that we all bounced back better than before, and not just survived. The work that the team at the Marsham Court have done, helped by some of our Bounce Back Challenge funding, is the very epitome of what we were aiming for: coming back stronger than ever and now offering one of the most accessible hotels in the whole country. It really is incredible to see, and they deserve all the success they are now having.”

Why is finding PPE that fits a major challenge for women? Because PPE is an area of workwear that is traditionally male dominated, and despite more women than ever joining industries where providing suitable PPE is mandatory, 71 per cent of PPE is still designed for men. What is the current state of female PPE? Some brands have approached the problem by simply rebranding workwear to ‘unisex’ and offering different size groups for men and women. The clothing itself does not change, it’s still the original design which has always catered for men. Unfortunately, the lack of change is mainly down to lack of demand. There has always been fewer women in these sectors and industries. But times are changing rapidly, and we are seeing more and more tradeswomen and female engineers acting as role models for the next generation. Why is most PPE not suitable for women? Many people don’t realise that the physical differences between men and women don’t just make unisex clothing uncomfortable, it is also unsafe. For instance, women generally have shorter arms than men, and having excessive fabric around the end of arms can increase risk of injury. This isn’t about women’s PPE not ‘looking right’ or ‘feeling feminine’. Women don’t want pink PPE! It’s about form, function, and women feeling properly represented when it comes to their workwear. Every business has a duty to supply suitable, comfortable, and safe workwear. For more on the Gender PPE gap, follow Tower Supplies on LinkedIn. We would like you to join the conversation to help support fit-forpurpose women’s PPE workwear.
