DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / WELCOME

A warm welcome to our first magazine of 2022 and may I wish you a Happy New Year! I hope you had the opportunity for some rest and relaxation with your friends and family over the Christmas holidays and are facing the year ahead with renewed energy and optimism. After an incredibly unpredictable two years, my hope is that this year brings some stability, and we really start to learn to live with the virus and we end this start/ stop cycle we’ve been locked in. We need to start getting on with life and business. As we look to the year ahead, we will continue to have a major focus on building the resilience of our businesses through our health and wellbeing programme. We will push forward with our groundbreaking GU6 programme, taking care of our business leaders through events, practical advice, and support for taking care of our mental wellbeing and of course providing the reach-out support we offer through our GU6 Champions, all qualified mental health first aiders. We will also continue with our educational and campaigning work around menopause awareness which has been met with huge support – with Dorset being the only Chamber in the country

to be focusing on this vital issue. You’ll also see a range of other wellbeing events and resources, all aimed at improving our personal and business resilience. 2022 will also see Dorset Chamber launch a series of educational events and produce tools and resources to help businesses embrace the ESG agenda – which is coming down the line at an ever-increasing rate. ESG refers to environmental, social and governance. There is increasing pressure on businesses to really get behind ESG, not just from an investor’s perspective but also from that of a customer, supplier and employee. We will help businesses really focus on working towards net zero, and strong social responsibility and governance. Finally, at our AGM in December I launched our new vision statement. Business isn’t all about making money and creating dividends for directors. Business plays a critical role in our lives and society, helping fund our welfare, education, and health

services, providing educational opportunities, providing us with our homes, providing employment which in terms supports our families, helping us live happy and fulfilled lives. We really want to reflect this in our aspirations, our aim is more than just helping businesses. I hope our new vision, “Enabling better lives through business”, really reflects this. I wish you a healthy, happy, and successful 2022 and we look forward to working with you in the year ahead. Ian Girling Chief Executive Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Race to Net Zero

The need for businesses to firmly embrace net zero has never been greater, highlighted at the recent COP26 summit.

This month we are exploring some of the steps Dorset businesses have taken to become more sustainable as well as highlight just some of the help available to businesses. This will be a significant theme for Dorset Chamber as we look forward and we will be doing all we can to help Dorset businesses become more sustainable. You’ll see a range of events on this issue as well as practical tools and advice on our website.

UK’s first structural steel contractors to reach net zero John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) is a structural steel company which designs, fabricates, and erects steelframed structures worldwide. REIDsteel is planning a new multi-million-pound site being the UK’s first structural steel contractors to reach net zero – its manufacturing facility will be powered by renewable energy, with rooftop solar PV panels generating enough electricity at peak times for the entire factory. Other features include: • Slashing carbon emissions by switching from diesel to electric forklifts • Investment in energy-efficient machinery • High-specification buildings that allow an end to the burning of gas and oil for heat • Reduction of HGV traffic • Investment in new communication technology to reduce travel • Travel plan including electric vehicle charging points • Landscaping and biodiversity improvements • A pledge to decarbonise for the Race to Zero initiative. MD Simon Boyd is helping drive industry efforts to promote decarbonisation through his membership of the CBI’s manufacturing council and other trade bodies. The company is also encouraging stakeholders and customers to embrace net zero. While the production of steel may be considered energy intensive, the material itself is one of the world’s most recyclable materials – and one of the most durable and long-lasting. www.reidsteel.com

Taking ESG seriously Blue Sky Financial Planning take sustainability very seriously with a public commitment regarding the steps they themselves have taken to reduce their impact on the environment. They’ve looked at all areas where they believe they can be more sustainable and their policy offers some very practical steps that other businesses can take. This includes: Culture - They have brought the team with them on this so this is firmly embedded within the culture of the business. Energy - They seek to reduce the amount of energy used as much as possible. They are monitoring actual consumption and reduced this significantly. This has been achieved by using an instant hot water tap, reducing fans in the office, installing energyefficient lighting and switching to a renewable energy supplier. Paper – They have reduced paper consumption by

moving towards a paperless office switching to electronic notifications such as invoices, statements, internal customer communication and reducing post. Water - They harvest rainwater and grey water is used to flush the toilets and urinals. Packaging and Recycling - Where possible, recycled products are purchased and also those that are plastic free. Liquids for the kitchen are purchased from ‘Plastic Free’ retail outlets, and other products are ethically sourced. Recycling includes packaging, paper, plastic, metal, crisp packets, coffee pods, old pens and batteries. Disposable cups have also been removed. Maintenance and Cleaning Although cleaning of the offices is done by a commercial cleaner, they require that products used are environmentally friendly. www.blueskyfp.co.uk/sustainability

Actisense cuts carbon emissions Dorset-based Marine electronics specialists, Actisense, are set to dramatically drop their carbon emission output. The company’s offices and factory facilities are set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 4.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, annually. Working with Low Carbon Dorset, and making use of grant funding, Actisense are installing an LED lighting system as well as a new, high-efficiency boiler and hot water tank. Director Michele Whitehurst oversaw the project “Working with Low Carbon Dorset has been an absolute pleasure. Having identified key areas where we could make significant environmental improvements, we’ve been able to implement our Actisense Energy Efficiency project and futureproof our facilities with an excellent new heating and lighting systems”. Low Carbon Dorset stimulate growth in Dorset’s low carbon economy by offering free technical support as well as grant funding for projects that adopt renewable energy and energy efficient practices. www.actisense.com

Seaweed. The smart way of combating climate change.

Carbon Kapture fight climate change by using seaweed’s fast-growing features to extract CO2 from our oceans and atmosphere, achieving results 30 times quicker than reforestation. With a network of aquaculture farms, they aim to be a global player in the supply and use of seaweed to capture carbon, repurposing the biomass and developing a sustainable product alternative and will help the growth of Mangroves, seagrass, and eelgrasses all over the world. As seaweed begins to grow rapidly, it absorbs CO2 through photosynthesis. They then use the seaweed and turn it into products which is how they sequester CO2, aiding the rebalancing of nature. They then repurpose the seaweed, using some of the biomass from existing farms to build the components of new ones. Businesses can help offset their carbon footprint by buying ropes of seaweed from our farms. Their farm’s will reduce CO2 in our oceans and atmosphere. They also have other products that will achieve ecological good for our oceans and our planet, in addition to building seaweed farms. You can buy ropes for next season now by contacting Paulr@carbonkapture.org www.carbonkapture.org more news online - www.dorsetchamber.co.uk/news

Ban wet wipes that contain plastic Tops Day Nurseries make their own baby wipes after finding out that the baby wipes available on the market all contained one-use plastic. A Bill aimed at banning wet wipes which contain plastic cleared its first hurdle in the House of Commons in November 2021 after an MP proposed the new law. Tops stopped buying babywipes due to the pollution they cause. Around 93% of sewer pipe blockages in the UK are caused by baby wipes, which can cause widespread pollution. They also found chemicals in commercially bought baby wipes which can aggravate delicate skin, whereas more natural products can do the same job, and without costing as much. Cheryl Hadland, Managing Director at Tops Day Nurseries, said: “After introducing the glitter ban in 2017 and becoming the first chain of day nurseries to achieve B Corp Accreditation in the UK, we are very happy to see a proposal for a new law to ban the sale or manufacture of wet wipes that contain plastic. However, it is time manufacturers took more responsibility for their products rather than expecting consumers or governments to do it for them.” www.topsdaynurseries.co.uk continued on p6...

Eco-friendly toys and crafts – Striving to be plastic-free! Pack A Range business has put a stake in

the ground with their solution to tackling the world plastic waste problem. The company behind the idea, Mauveworx, was one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of PPE Face shields for the NHS during the Covid crisis, all produced from their factory in Ferndown. Managing Director, James Martin said, “After observing our own consumption of plastic through toys I did a bit of research to understand the issue better. The toy market is $20bn a year industry, of which 90% contains plastic. Unlike single use plastics, such as drink bottles, the toy market is not geared towards recycling with most ending up in oceans or landfill. A recent study of 2000 parents found that 25% admitted to throwing away plastic toys that were in perfect working order. These alarming figures compelled me to enable a way for playtime to not only be fun, but also eco-friendly”. www.mauveworx.com

The Master Key Group specialises in acquiring and working with a number of companies specialising in the environmental sector to regulate their carbon footprint and assist with waste stream controls for the greater good of all, driving sustainability to the UK. Waste Streams They deliver products and services to help industry meet its social responsibilities, working to find ways to move waste streams into second use, educating businesses on what options are available to dispose of their waste, to drive revenues back to the businesses and to conform with all regulations. At the same time, they provide an advantage to businesses working with us to cut their waste disposal costs. They also specialise in business rewards programmes for their staff and businesses. They are happy to provide a free waste audit to help your business with its waste stream understanding, with the goal to see that your current providers and collectors are providing you the ultimate solution with the best cash rewards. From January 2022, The Master Key Group are providing car charging solutions to businesses as part of our sustainability drive. They provide funding, and grant rebates that cover the costs of chargers for 19 months, offering a free site visit to evaluate all their options. www.themasterkeygroup.com

Let us Buy Back your old workwear Did you know, 350,000 tonnes worth of textiles are sent to landfill each year? Workwear Pro Direct’s (WWPD) ‘BuyBack’ scheme was introduced to recycle surplus clothing and signage after events. Partnering with textile destruction and recycling firm; Avena who specialise in secure clothing & uniform disposal, has allowed them to develop further. WWPD customers can return old/ damaged workwear or uniforms to them, which is then sent for disposal. As an incentive for customers to dispose of old clothing in an environmentally conscious way, WWPD credits customers with £30 for every 100kg of workwear returned! WWPD sort through all BuyBack returns into 2 containers for collection: Textiles with 50%+ cotton content which can then be broken down and recycled into new materials. /company/dorset-chamber/

Less than 50% cotton, all other materials currently cannot be recycled with Avena are sent to be incinerated and turned into energy. Both options reduce landfill waste. WWPD’s initiative has been created to make it even easier for customers to reduce their environmental impact. WWPD now provide ‘Eco-Workwear-Audits’, evaluating customers current workwear and sourcing alternative sustainably made garments – using recycled or recyclable materials. With more sustainable products on the market WWPD can further reduce amount of clothing sent for incineration. New incentive to switch to sustainable uniform in 2022: All orders over £500, WWPD are doubling their BuyBack credit amount to £60 for every 100kg of clothing returned! This additional credit can be used to offset the cost of new sustainable uniforms. www.workwearprodirect.com

British e-commerce marketplace OnBuy, which is on track to be UK’s next tech unicorn after recording 200% revenue growth in the last 12 months, is looking to maintain its impressive growth by offering all of its 100+ employees the chance to grow as well with an option to have a stake in the business. The news follows an extremely successful month for the online marketplace, reporting that GMV over the infamous Black Friday weekend increased YOY by 25%, despite the retail sector showing an overall decline in the same period. Continuing to show consistent growth, the reward of equity to its employees comes at a pivotal moment for the business, as they prepare for international expansion. Over £1 million in granted share options will be offered to OnBuy staff, giving them the opportunity to be direct beneficiaries of the company’s future success. Founded by British entrepreneur Cas Paton in 2016, the UK-based marketplace has been a breath of fresh air for retailers looking for an alternative to Amazon to sell their products. OnBuy offers 36 million listings and is committed to being a fair partner to retailers, as unlike other major marketplaces it does not create its own product lines that compete directly with sellers. OnBuy also offers a simple, flat fee structure across the board and recently sacrificed 85% of its commission fees on Black Friday so sellers could offer great promotions without losing margin. To recognise the commitment and hard work that has won the company numerous accolades in the business community, each employee at OnBuy will be rewarded with share options in the company equivalent to around 25% of their annual income that can be exercised during any liquidity event. With an anticipated IPO in the next two years, staff are set to benefit sooner 8

rather than later. Cas Paton, CEO & Founder of OnBuy said, “At OnBuy, we do the right thing by our retailers and customers, so it’s natural that we would do the right thing by our staff too - and we don’t believe any employee should have to be in the boardroom to benefit from company growth. E-commerce is a fast-paced 24-hour business and many firms have been in the spotlight recently for poor working practices and in some cases, downright abuse of staff. Frankly this is unacceptable and at OnBuy, we are committed to creating a fair and transparent working environment for all. We want to show that working for an e-commerce giant can be a hugely positive experience and our team is vital to our future success. We want to reward hard work financially, showing employees that they aren’t just a cog in the machine.” The announcement comes as OnBuy finishes 2021 strong with recognition in Deloitte’s Fast 50 as the fastest growing company in the South /company/dorset-chamber/

West and Wales, and Paton winning the Regional Scale-Up Entrepreneur award at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards in November. As a result of the ongoing public success, OnBuy has grown its team to more than 100 talented members prompting a relocation to new, larger offices in Bournemouth. With sights firmly set on international expansion in the coming months as well as the launch of a much-anticipated mobile app, the company is set to grow further still, with plenty of roles yet to be filled and several business milestones to be announced imminently. www.onbuy.com

Inspire supports Seismic’s multimillion-pound acquisition Poole-based business and tax advisors, Inspire, has completed a complex corporate finance project, supporting London-based Seismic Venture Partners in its acquisition of three automation and manufacturing companies – now trading under the i3 Group brand. The four-month project involved the Inspire team carrying out the financial and tax due diligence for all three companies that were to be acquired, working closely with Seismic’s Principal, Ewan Lloyd-Baker. Once the due diligence project was completed, Inspire began work advising on the share purchase agreement for the transaction. Working in partnership with legal advisors, Keystone Law and Seismic, Inspire provided comprehensive advice, coordinating activity between the three parties, ensuring that the transaction was completed on schedule and achieving the desired outcome for Ewan. The specialist design, manufacturing, test, and automation companies, comprising Adept Automation, Sapcote Engineering and Testworks have now been brought together under the i3 Group brand. Focused on ‘intelligent, industrial, integration’, the i3 Group provides support for manufacturing companies to improve performance and drive efficiency and reliability. With all work overseen by Inspire’s Director, Andrew Singleton and delivered by a team headed by Advisory Manager, Jon Huggins, the fast-paced project included an in-depth review of working capital, ratio analysis to assess the company’s financial performance and financial modelling, alongside overall advice, and guidance. Andrew Singleton commented: “After taking the initial brief from Ewan and the requirements for the transaction, the Inspire team were all hands on-deck to get the financial and tax due diligence projects completed as efficiently as possible, to keep to the tight schedule. This required a dynamic approach, involving an ongoing dialogue with Ewan to agree upon areas of focus and discussions about our findings. “Having an experienced advisory team in-house allows us to deliver high value corporate finance transactions - such as this for Seismic - within tight timeframes and to a high standard, to meet the requirements of our brief. “Working with Ewan and the team at Keystone, we were also able to advise on the share purchase agreements and provide an experienced financial sounding board for pricing and deal structure considerations.” Ewan Lloyd-Baker, Principal of Seismic Venture Partners, added: “The team at Inspire were incredibly proactive, from our initial discussions, all the way through to the completion of the transaction. They communicated very well with us and managed the whole process with a great deal of professionalism. “The project schedule remained on-track, despite having to complete much of the activity through the lockdown period earlier this year. “We are delighted with the outcome and are now looking forward to growing the i3 Group in the future.” www.inspireaccountants.co.uk

Presidents Column by Caron Khan

2022 – Do you have a plan? With the first month of the year nearly under your belt, now is the time to ensure your business makes the absolute most out of 2022. But this doesn’t mean slamming on the accelerator in a bid to increase productivity, it means stopping, examining and ensuring you have a robust strategy that is securely aligned to your business objectives. The first question you need to think about is: ‘where are you now?’ Understanding your starting point is crucial to success. Examining where you are and your strengths and weaknesses gives you the foresight to remedy them in the future, and this will be an important part of your overall strategy. Remember – knowledge is power, and the more you examine your starting point the more leverage you’ll have to move forwards positively. Secondly, what are your goals and how are you going to achieve them? This encompasses both your short-term and long-term business objectives. Your strategy must be securely aligned to any business objectives, and will identify the stepping-stones that lead to the desired outcome. Determining how you achieve your goals and ensuring you stick to the right path is key to a successful strategy, and any deviation or reverting to the ‘old ways’ will simply dilute the desired result. Thirdly, who is going to help you achieve it? There’s no doubt that when it comes to creating a strategy, it’s important to ensure the entire team are on board with it. Not only does this help to achieve the business’ goals, it also brings the team together and motivates them to work towards a common objective. Keeping your team involved will help them stay on task, give them a shared sense of purpose and ultimately prevent individuals from losing sight of the business’ aims. And last but by no means least – measure, measure, measure! Whilst helping your business achieve its goals is the fundamental purpose of a strategy, it’s also important to measure results accurately and regularly. Your strategy should incorporate this, giving you the tools and knowhow to understand whether you’re proceeding as planned, or deviating from the path.

Cherries coaches support Bournemouth University’s men’s and women’s football teams, while students also working closely with the club on a range of placements, live project work and match day work experiences. Bournemouth University placement students bring fresh perspective to local businesses At Bournemouth University (BU) they know how important employability is to students. That’s why all undergraduate degrees – and many of our postgraduate degrees – offer the chance of undertaking a placement. This gives students the chance to place their learning into context, seeing how their studies relate to the industry in which they hope to operate. However, they also provide the placement company with considerable advantages too – bringing a fresh perspective and the latest thinking into the organisation, as well as providing support for short-term projects or a safer way to attempt to expand a business. Two BU students who have recently completed placements are Katie Smith, a BSc (Hons) Sport management student, and Patrick Day, from our Meng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree. Bournemouth University caught up with them to find out how their placements have been of benefit to both them and their placement companies. Katie spent her placement at Reid Bikes, a global cycle business with roots in Australia and a head office in Poole and enjoyed the experience of being part of a small marketing team. “Working for a smaller business meant that I quickly became part of the team, and had lots of responsibility from the get-go,” she says. “It meant I was able to get involved with a lot of different projects during my time there, which was great.” Katie’s success came as no surprise to Reid Bikes’ Marketing Manager, Kyle Gouveia, himself a BU graduate. “I undertook a placement year as part of my degree at BU, so I already knew the importance of getting practical experience in the workplace,” he says. “When I grew my role at Reid to the point where I needed an assistant, I couldn’t think of a more rewarding way to hire someone than by reaching out to BU to hire a placement student.” Katie was the second placement student to work at Reid, and Kyle feels it is a system that is working well for the organisation. “I can honestly say that I couldn’t have made a wiser decision,” he says of the experience. “The injection of

youth and new perspectives that a placement student provides has been incredibly valuable to our business.” As well as smaller teams, BU placement students can make an impact at larger organisations. Patrick Day, a Meng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering student, spent his placement year with ASM Assembly Systems in Weymouth, the world’s largest supplier of bestin-class equipment for the electronics industry. “I was particularly attracted to their diverse work, which matched my ambitions to gain experience with industry experts in the technology field,” says Patrick of the reasons for his choice of placement company. “My days were varied, including design work, practical builds, testing, team meetings, and building relationships with suppliers, customers and colleagues.” During his time at ASM, Patrick benefitted from a supportive and nurturing culture, which saw him provided with training and support whenever it was needed. He undertook product and CAD training, as well as individual development based on his own development and skills. Ashley Chalker, Project Manager at ASM, is clear about the benefits that placement students can bring to an organisation such as ASM. “As a company, we embrace new ideas and fresh approaches to engineering and technical challenges, and placement students embody that approach,” he says. “Patrick stood out thanks to his willingness to undertake a wide range of projects, and the way he was able to apply his strong engineering skills. Our customers have high expectations and can make challenging requests, but we knew that Patrick’s positive attitude and willingness to learn would be a great asset.” Ashley feels that a solid support structure is key to getting the most out of a placement student, especially at a larger organisation like ASM. “We allocate a mentor to placement students, to make sure they are supported to develop their skills to meet our business challenges. This means they are able to make

a fuller contribution, as we help to build on their business and technical knowledge throughout the year.” As businesses look to build back after a challenging year, a placement student can represent a chance to bring new skills into an organisation on a short-term basis and – as the experiences of both Katie and Patrick show – can make a difference to businesses of any size. www.bournemouth.ac.uk

Jim Hawkins, Delivery & Security Director of C31A

Cyber firm welcomes new legislation A company certified by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has welcomed new legislation that will help protect people from having their devices hacked and data stolen.

Michelle Lane, James Owen, Rachel Saltonstall & Tracy Neal

Battens Solicitors expand their Agricultural and Rural Property team with two new appointments

C3IA Solutions, headquartered in Poole, Dorset, said the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Bill is long overdue. Jim Hawkins from the company said that the new law will ban easy-toguess default passwords being installed on devices. It will also require that customers are told when they buy an internetenabled product how long it will receive security updates and patches. Jim said: “This is something that will make hacking harder and is the sort of bill the cyber security industry has been calling for. “It is a move in the right direction and shows that legislators are beginning to understand the threats that ordinary people face. “Easy-to-guess default passwords enable hackers to target a device and that can give them access to home networks meaning they are able to steal data or sensitive information. “So many things are internet-connected now – from televisions to toys – and it gives criminals new opportunities. “During the lockdowns we saw more traditional criminals move into cybercrime, and there they remain. “The legislation will also provide a place where people can report bugs and flaws – and the whole thing will be overseen by a new regulator. “Companies that do not comply with the new law could face large fines – and this is hopefully the stick that will create compliance. The law will apply to manufacturers, importers, and distributors. “There will be an estimated 50 billion connectable products worldwide by 2030, and on average there are nine in each UK home. “The bill also aims to boost the security of 5G and broadband networks. “It is important that people don’t become complacent because the bill is not in effect yet and there are plenty of other ways in which internet security can be breached. “As ever we would urge people to use hard-to-guess passwords on all their devices and change them regularly. A good technique is to use three random words or a password management system. “We know that ‘1234’, ‘qwerty’ and ‘password’, as well as popular football teams’ names, are still used by far too many people.”

Leading South West law firm Battens Solicitors are delighted to announce the expansion of their Agriculture and Rural Property team with the appointment of two new members of staff. Senior Associate Solicitor Rachel Saltonstall and Conveyancing Executive Michelle Lane are joining the team of agricultural law specialists at one of the area’s largest and longestestablished legal firms. Rachel and Michelle bring with them a wide breadth of experience in agricultural and commercial law. Rachel has worked in the South West for the past 17 years, acting for a diverse range of clients in the private, commercial, charitable and agricultural sectors. This includes sales and acquisitions, all aspects of non-contentious landlord and tenant matters, telecommunications, and renewable energy projects. Rachel says “I have had a long association with Battens dating back to 2004 and I re-joined the company last year. I am very pleased now to be part of the agricultural team, which is very well respected in the area for both its in-depth legal expertise and its pragmatic advice on farming and rural estate matters.” Michelle is also returning to the agricultural team after spending some time away to bring up her young family. She is a Graduate of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and has specialised in agriculture and rural property since 2014. She advises on matters associated with the ownership and occupation of land and rural properties, such as sales, purchases, easements, tenancy agreements and borrowing secured on land. Along with other members of the department, Michelle is very much involved in farming. Helping out on her parents’ dairy farm in North Dorset gives her a real insight into the issues farmers face: “When you talk to farmers during site visits, it definitely helps if you can speak the same language and understand the challenges they have to deal with. Most farms are family businesses, some going back for generations, so it is important to understand the family dynamics as well as the complexities involved in rural land transactions and negotiations.” James Owen, of the Battens’ Agricultural Rural Property team said: “Rachel and Michelle are a valuable and welcome addition to the team, strengthening the expertise and service which we can offer to all our clients and helping us to build the best and most knowledgeable agricultural legal team in the area.”

Health and Wellbeing If you didn’t achieve your health and fitness goals last year, then now is the time to reassess and embed some good habits for the year ahead The start of a New Year provides us with the chance to take stock of our lives and reflect. We are all ageing that is a fact of life, but the overall goal should be to head into our mid-life and golden years in the best possible health. Our diet and physical routines can really influence the likelihood of getting serious disease and becoming a burden on our loved ones and the health service, therefore prevention is key. If this Christmas was particularly indulgent, you are not alone, but now is the time to focus on what you can do to ensure that your 2022 has the best possible start. So many New Year’s resolutions don’t even make it to the end of January, therefore, to give yourself the best chance of succeeding, try to set regular goals and come up with a simple and measurable plan. DIET Add one piece of fruit and/or one piece of vegetable at every meal. It’s amazing how quickly that will accumulate your intake of the healthy stuff and it also has the effect of ‘crowding out’ the bad food. Try to go plant-based for at least one day a week. Not only are you doing your bit for the planet, especially if you use seasonal and local fruit and veg, it also helps overall wellness, promotes longevity and prevents disease. Always have healthy snacks on hand, this makes it easier to overcome the munchies. A handful of almonds, an apple or some prunes can help satiate cravings and stop you reaching for the biscuit tin at those critical trigger times of the day.

Try to add one new healthy food each week. Start with the alphabet: week one, A is for asparagus, week two, broccoli, celeriac, dates etc. Have fun with the family coming up with a list and put it on the fridge and tick off each week you achieve. Before you know it, you will have done six months. Ensure that you keep well hydrated as a dehydrated body doesn’t work as efficiently and the benefits of water include increasing energy, flushing out toxins, improving skin complexion and boosting immunity. If you struggle with plain water, try infusing it with cucumber, mint, or watermelon, or drinking herbal tea. Experiment with spices in your cooking, not only do they add flavour and save you adding too much salt, but they also have many health benefits in particular cinnamon, turmeric and garlic. Studies around gut health show that these can ward off inflammation which is linked to many diseases. Try to have homemade smoothies or soup five days a week or avoid processed food for a month. It doesn’t seem like such a life overhaul if you add or eliminate a certain food for just 30 days. Plus, if you get in the rhythm of it, you might continue. Or if not, you know you will start a new goal the next month. ACTIVE LIVING Aim for 30 minutes of activity daily, try doing the midday mile, a brisk walk in your lunch hour. Set your alarm 30 minutes early to fit in some exercise, or get the children involved after they have done their homework in the evening. If you can enlist a workout buddy and set some goals, this accountability will help you stick to your goals, at the same time making fitness more fun. If your bestie doesn’t live close

by make a phone date and walk together. If you try to create a new goal every month it helps prevent you becoming overwhelmed, which is when you are most likely to give up. MINDFUL LIVING What exactly is mindfulness? It is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you are sensing and feeling in the moment without interpretation or judgement. The benefits are that it quiets a racing mind and helps to alleviate stress and anxiety. Give the Morning Miracle a try. This practice popularised by Hal Elrod involves a wake-up routine. At its simplest it can involve a 30-minute period where you practice meditation (apps such as Headspace or Calm can guide you with this). Write a gratitude journal of all the things that you have to be grateful for, read a book to increase your knowledge and devote some time to stretching. This practice puts you in the right frame of mind in which to tackle the day ahead. Remember it is vital that you focus on good quality and solid sleep. The latest research shows that eight hours sleep is essential for our bodies to heal and restore. Try to ensure that you go to bed between 10.00 - 11.00pm to give yourself the best chance of achieving the optimum time. Finally, and most important of all remember to - BE KIND. To yourself and to others – always. It really does make a difference.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS

MYTIME Young Carers gets Greendale’s Vote! Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited has announced it will be supporting Dorset based MYTIME Young Carers as it’s chosen charity for 2022. Founded in 1987, MYTIME Young Carers is on a mission to level the playing field for young carers and young adult carers by providing them with the support, opportunities, and friendship that every child needs and deserves. Maria Tidy, Community Development Manager said: “MYTIME Young Carers aims to provide support for young carers wherever there is a need. We understand that caring responsibilities can have far-reaching impact on a child’s life, and we know that no two young carers’ needs are the same. That’s why we offer a range of programmes, each designed to address a different area of need and to provide a different kind of support. “With over 80% of young carers saying their mental health has been impacted by their role, our R&R retreat in the Purbecks also gives young carers that vital ‘me time’ they so greatly need and deserve. “We are thrilled that Greendale has chosen MYTIME Young Carers as its charity for 2022 as this will enable us to continue providing the much needed and valued support to all our young carers across Dorset.” Maria Seabright, HR/Finance Director, Greendale Construction, commented: “Greendale are proud to be supporting yet another fantastic Dorset charity in MYTIME Young Carers. We will be raising funds over the coming year in a number of ways, including at our Greendale Christmas party where there will be an auction, and our annual cake sale. In lieu of sending Christmas cards this year we are also donating £500 the other two charities in our Greendale charity vote; Helping Young Minds and Lewis Manning, who will each receive a donation of £500.” www.greendaleconstruction.com

FOCUS ON

HR

with View HR

Looking Ahead – What are the key HR Issues for 2022 Firstly, we would like to wish you a very happy new year. The Covid-19 pandemic has shown that none of us can predict for certain what the future holds! However, we explore some of the key HR issues that employers might find themselves facing this coming year. What can employers do to help ensure they have the talent to succeed? Of course, the rules of supply and demand mean that rates of pay, and benefits are important factors but the heightened appetite for hybrid and flexible working is also a leading factor. However, it is also important to remember that (as with customer service), retaining your current employees can often be more cost effective than trying to recruit new ones. As such, tools such as “stay interviews” can help to inform the management of that individual employee, as well as wider HR strategy. Will flexible working grow? Employers are likely to face more requests, questions (and possibly even challenges) from employees on this topic. Benefits such as enhanced flexible working entitlements can be a helpful in attracting talent to your organisation, and some reports also highlight that this can improve accessibility for a diverse workforce. We recommend having a clear flexible working policy in place, and publicising this with your employees. What impact will rising inflation have on our people? A rise in inflation is not just an abstract economic concept; it means that employees are likely to be facing an increase in day-today living costs, and so their salary will not be stretching as far as it used to. As such, employees may be more likely to seek a pay-rise; either from their current employer, or by going into the market and seeking a new opportunity with better pay. We do recommend that employers undertake regular benchmarking and keep abreast of market data, to inform their pay policies. It’s also worth remembering that the National Minimum and Living Wage rates are set to increase in April 2022.

Full Steam Ahead for Swanage Railway with Keyfort IT Swanage Railway Case Study The ten-mile branch line from Wareham, where it joined the London to Weymouth main line, to Corfe Castle and Swanage was opened in May 1885. The new railway brought tourists to Corfe Castle and Swanage and enabled ball clay and Purbeck stone to be exported out by train while coal, for domestic heating as well as gas production in Swanage, could be brought in by train. The Swanage branch line thrived from the 1880s to the 1940s but increased car use in the 1950s saw train passenger numbers start to decline. The last train ran from Swanage to Corfe Castle and Wareham on the evening of Saturday 1 January 1972. After several years of hard campaigning, a small party of volunteers moved in to start restoration work on the station buildings in February 1976, with the first tracks being allowed to be laid in 1977. The summer of 2017 saw Swanage Railway run a 60-day trial diesel train service from Swanage and Corfe Castle to the main line at Wareham. Winning several national awards, the rebuilding of the Swanage Railway shows what the human spirit can achieve. Swanage Railway now contributes more than £15 million a year to the Isle of Purbeck economy. The Challenge As with many UK organisations Swanage Railway was faced with shutdown 2020/21 as part of the Government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. They were also faced with the burgeoning 21st century threat of ransomware, a malicious and selfish means to attempt to extort money which lay in stark contrast to the community effort of

Swanage Railway. In tune with their 45-year history, Swanage Railway needed to build back better so that they could meet the needs of their passengers, staff, and stake holders when they reopened to the public. The Solution Swanage Railway turned to Keyfort to develop a solution that would use best technology to meet their burgeoning IT productivity, resilience, and cyber security requirements. In addition to secure Internet Connections the old site servers and services were migrated to the cloud implementing software upgrades, additional resilience, additional backups, and additional cyber security in the process. All the work was completed to budget, quality, and time, ready for the reopening of Swanage Railway to the public 2021 and the return of Eddystone locomotive, a classic 1946 West Country Class Bulleid Pacific No. 34028 after a threeyear refit. The commitment to using the best technology to full advantage has set Swanage Railway fair for this year’s fares and beyond. Peter Milford, Company Secretary at The Swanage Railway Company said “Keyfort worked with the railway to understand their quite specific requirements – incorporating 21st century IT with century old transport technology. The work has seen greatly enhanced resilience with fast secure connections from various locations to upgraded servers in remote data centres. Customers have noticed the difference with greatly improved online booking systems. Swanage Railway is delighted that the work has helped them to achieve Cyber Essentials accreditation in 2021.” www.keyfort.co.uk

Healthcare sector staffing challenges

Staffing remains the number one challenge for care home operators both in terms of cost and recruitment. The number of social care staff fell by 42,000 in the six months leading up to the end of October this year mainly due to the Government’s mandatory vaccination policy which impacted care home staff after it was introduced on 11 November, with providers raising fears they will lose 8% of workers because of the rule. Gaps in workforce data supplied by providers of social care services means there is uncertainty over the scale of the staffing shortages across this fragile sector. But this analysis does paint a bleak picture of a deepening crisis just as over-stretched care staff prepare for what is expected to be one of the sector’s most difficult winters. Mploy Healthcare aware of the difficulties in clients finding new staff and the costs involved, we are actively recruiting new staff to the industry that will go through our robust recruitment process including ID Checks, vaccination passports, referencing, weekly COVID checks and a DBS. They will attend our Care certificate training and moving and handling and can be offered to our clients as a temporary or permanent solution according to their needs. We pride ourselves on our motto ‘Proud to Care’ and as such try and offer a personal, bespoke, and comprehensive service to all our clients. What can you do to tackle racism in your business? The past couple of years have exposed in alarming ways just how much racism still pervades society and remains inherent in the national consciousness, institutions, and systems. To quote just a few examples from the UK: Unemployment levels are twice as high amongst black men than white men.1 Applicants with white-sounding names are called to interview far more often than applicants with Asian or African sounding names.2 Black women are still four times more likely than white women to die in pregnancy or childbirth in the UK, and women from Asian ethnic backgrounds face twice the risk. 3 In Dorset, which is less racially diverse than many other parts of the country, entrenched prejudices persist often simply because there is no minorities in the room to take offence or call it out. When confronted with difference, however, these prejudices can quickly come to the fore. It is striking that in the months following the Brexit vote incidents of hate crime across England and Wales increased by up to 100% with Dorset seeing the greatest increase!4 As businesses and employers, we have a responsibility to root out discriminatory practices and ensure that we comply with employment law and the Equality Act 2010. However, complying with the letter of the law doesn’t go anywhere near far enough in ensuring that all staff, clients, and customers feel valued and safe and that access to opportunity is equitable. It’s very easy to think, ‘we don’t have a problem with racism here’. Probably what you mean by that is there have been no reported or explicit incidents of racism in your workplace. But racism is not simply the easy-to-spot occurrences of aggressive discrimination or the use of racial slurs or terms, it is far more covert and often unconscious than that. The truth is, when dozens of people who all share the same biases join and form a business or organisation then their shared biases become part of the workplace culture, unwittingly baked into the structure of how things work. This is what is meant by structural, institutional, or systemic racism. There may not be conscious or malicious intent, but the norms which advantage some and disadvantage others persist unless we deliberately examine those systems, listen to other perspectives, and seek to be proactively anti-racist. So how can we address inequalities, promote fairness, and celebrate difference in our workplaces? Below I suggest three starting points to begin to transform our businesses into beacons of hope for a fairer world. Valuing Difference – Ensure representation at every level of your company A study at Columbia Business School gave teams the task of solving a murder mystery. In half the cases the groups were composed of four friends. The other half were composed of three friends and a stranger. The result? The teams with a stranger consistently and significantly outperformed the teams without one. They also found the task more cognitively demanding as they were forced to engage with different /company/dorset-chamber/

perspectives and think carefully to justify their own perspectives. They were enabled to see their own blind spots which in turn helped them collectively to find more effective solutions.5 Difference is good for us. Valuing rather than fearing difference is the beginning of change. Making sure that difference is represented at every level of your business is essential if you are going to grow. Engaging with difference – Listen to the lived experience of people of colour in your workplace. In any system which is inherently biased, minorities are likely to feel anxious about speaking up when they experience discrimination or microaggressions6. To survive, people have often learned to just ‘put up with’ some of the injustices they experience. (The same is true of women in a male-dominated context). Finding out how black, Asian or minority ethnic people feel daily in your workplace or context is essential to effect real, lasting change. But meaningful listening and learning is not a one-time thing and can only take place in a safe, or possibly anonymous, context in which people feel confident that their perspectives cannot and will not be used against them. Before such honest reflection can take place, you may well need to invest in some training. Challenging Indifference – Re-think your vision and values Inertia is the greatest barrier to change. “Where there is no vision the people perish,” wrote King Solomon in Proverbs 29. Change requires clarity of purpose and a coherent message that galvanises action and generates momentum. Two questions: a) How much focus and attention do you give to the ethos and values of your business? And b) Are those values in need of an update? In other words, do they firmly and unequivocally affirm the value of every human person, and do they translate into the everyday, living reality of your workplace? Change takes time, openness, and the willingness to have meaningful dialogue about these issues. We need to move beyond polarised soundbites on social media and commit to create positive working environments for all. Social Media Trends to Watch Out For in 2022 It’s that time again, where social media managers everywhere are preparing their strategies and keeping an eye on what social media trends are going to be for 2022. • Is TikTok finally going to overtake Instagram? • Is organic engagement any better? • Where should we focus our attention from the new year? Here are 5 social media trends we expect to take shape from 2022… TikTok to become the world’s most popular social media platform? TikTok has consistently been the most downloaded non-gaming app worldwide and has since surpassed 1 billion downloads. That made it the 7th most popular social network in the world. If you exclude messaging networks, TikTok is now the 4th most popular social media network after Instagram. The platform is based on a highly personalised content proposal system that helps brands gain exposure and connect with the right audience. In addition, it is about to introduce e-commerce and monetisation models. Now is certainly a good time to try and get to grips with the platform to see if it’s right for your business. Social media emerges as a shopping platform In 2020, Instagram launched the Shopping tab as a way for its users to explore new products. Facebook pushes retailers to use its built-in storefront and has simplified the process for uploading products and Pinterest uses buyable pins to promote items for sale. Live shopping could be a key commerce trend we’re expecting to see an increase in 2022 as Instagram and Facebook have their own live streaming features catering to both shoppers and retailers, allowing brands to link directly to the products they’re talking about. Influencer marketing continues to rise Influencer marketing has officially shifted from an experimental tactic to a foundational component of any viable social media strategy, and rightfully so. Influencer marketing helps build trust and community, and this trust goes a long way. Influencer marketing is up to 70% more effective

than traditional social media marketing. It seems all eyes are on creators in 2022. Beyond traditional influencers who amass large audiences and market to them on behalf of brands, a creator produces content on behalf of brands that addresses a specific need or target audience. Creators are influencers in their own right, and they’re in high demand after this year’s creator economy boom. They’ve been integral to helping businesses fill the gap when it comes to entertaining and relatable social content, especially on emerging platforms like TikTok. Consider influencer marketing to help you expand your existing content strategy. More spend, less Tracking Marketers in the U.S. have reportedly spent upwards of $50 billion on social media advertising this year, and that metric is only expected to increase for 2022. Paid social media is critical component of a strong strategy to break beyond the algorithmic limitations on organic content visibility, and this isn’t new. What is new, is that the consumer privacy landscape is changing. With the introduction of Apple’s iOS 14 advertising changes, which allow users to block the tracking of their online activity, paired with Google’s elimination of third-party cookie tracking, marketers have less data available to them, which makes it harder to track the results of social media ads. This is a win for consumer privacy, and a loss for marketing efficiency. With this said, we can expect to see brands and businesses experimenting with enhanced creative and new social media advertising platforms. Expect to see ads looking less like ads and more like regular content. With new ad formats and spending options, like Instagram Reels ads, Branded Content, and the rollout of ads on TikTok, successful ads will likely mirror successful organic content. Increased augmented reality options According to Social Media Today, searches for the keyword “social media AR” are up by 81% over the past 5 years. While some services have integrated augmented reality into their products – including Instagram, others have yet to explore what it has to offer. Over the next year, we are predicting that augmented reality is set to become more mainstream. Users can already create their own filters on Instagram which is great for brands. If you aren’t clued up on the potential of augmented reality, now is the time to get learning. Get planning Now is the perfect time to reflect on your current social media journey. From short-form vertical video content to social media advertising, consider these social media trends for 2022, and activate the ones that make most sense for your personal brand or business. www.southcoastsocial.com

In uncertain times, ensure you’re in good financial health The Covid pandemic has reminded us all how unforeseen events can rock the lives and financial foundations of many families. One thing is clear, as we emerge from Lockdown, repaying the high costs of the pandemic is paramount in the mind of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak. Tackle rising taxes Taxes are predicted to increase significantly, some allowances to remain frozen, with others expected to disappear altogether to help begin repaying the government’s mounting debt accumulated in tackling the pandemic. Top tip: Look carefully at how to make the most of the current tax and pension saving options, as by not doing so, many of these tax allowances can so easily go unused and become lost to you forever. Combat low savings rates: With interest rates remaining at a record low, keeping large amounts in a bank or building society leaves your savings exposed to being severely eroded over time by inflation as well as taxation. Top tip. Explore the many other ways available to help manage your money, but be careful, don’t leave yourself open to undue risk. Protect family well-being: The past 19 or so months has served as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and with it, the need to protect ourselves and those around us to ensure well-being and peace of mind. Top tip: Check to ensure you have the right levels of life/critical illness protection in place and are taking the appropriate measures to preserve your hard-earned assets from the financially devasting impact Inheritance Tax can sometimes have on the legacy you wish to leave to your family. If any of these 3 points resonate with you, it’s worth acting today. Compliance made easy No matter what sector your business is in, you will have key regulations that you must comply with. Compliance can often be viewed as ‘dull but essential’ but is, in reality, super-important – like fire safety, environmental health and trading standards. Well, how do you manage them? If you tackle each one separately with a different regulatory agency, you’re almost certainly missing out on a more efficient way of doing things. It’s called a Primary Authority partnership. As a scheme, Primary Authority has been in operation for more than a decade, helping businesses across the country to get accurate, consistent regulatory advice that makes compliance simpler and easier. There are lots of benefits, that ultimately mean you’ll get more time back to work on growing your business: • Receiving all your regulatory support in one place • Having a single point of contact for enquiries, with agreed response times • Access to assured, professional and tailored regulatory advice • Support with complaint monitoring to identify trends • Developing a positive and collaborative relationship with local regulators You can form a Primary Authority partnership regardless of whether you’re a sole trader operating in one local authority area, or a larger regional or national company trading across multiple local authority areas, or if you only trade online. In any case, you can benefit from the scheme. Businesses that operate as part of a group, such as trade

38

January 2022 | Dorset Business Focus

associations and franchises, can also benefit from entering a Primary Authority partnership. So how do they work? Many people will not have heard of the term Primary Authority let alone know how they can help their business. Originally launched in 2009 to help businesses with sites located in multiple areas, the scheme was expanded in 2017 meaning that any business can now participate in Primary Authority. So if you are just starting out in business, this means you can make sure you get it right from the outset, meaning you can invest with confidence in products, practices and procedures, safe in the knowledge that the resources you devote to compliance are well spent. Let’s consider some of the benefits of forming a Primary Authority partnership a bit more. Firstly, it gives you the confidence that your business is operating within the law. The introduction of new legislation is a regular occurrence and can have farreaching implications for businesses. The example of Natasha’s Law earlier this year is a good example of this, which requires food businesses to provide full ingredient lists and allergen labelling on foods prepackaged for direct sale on the premises. In addition to specific advice, a Primary Authority partnership also gives you a single point of contact for any regulatory queries that relate to your business, meaning you have one relationship to manage instead of what could four or five. This can help your business to cut down on red tape, reducing inspection times and reducing cost and confusion

/company/dorset-chamber/

caused by conflicting advice whilst also helping you to build a positive, collaborative relationship with local regulatory services. Dorset Council has been successfully offering and running the Primary Authority partnership scheme with the likes of Kondor, Fladden Fishing and Hobby Craft – names you may very well recognise – underlining that it really can apply to any type of business. As a service, they have a team of specialist officers who cover a wide range of regulatory disciplines covering areas such as health and safety, food safety and food standards, licensing, agriculture, and product safety. Advice can be provided on a reactive basis, for example in relation to a business query, or on a proactive basis, where your business may want input into a review of a particular process. International Trade Updates Changes when moving goods in and out of the UK from 1st January 2022 At 12.01am on 1st January 2022, additional rules and procedures have come into force that will affect all UK importers and exporters moving goods between the EU and beyond. Dorset Chamber are at the forefront of supporting businesses navigating these changes. We are here to ensure businesses remain in the know with what to expect, and more importantly, how to prepare your business. What has changed include: The end of delayed declarations: From the 1st January 2021, importers were allowed 175 days before the full (supplementary) import declaration needed to be submitted, VAT and duty (if any) to be paid. Rules of Origin: From the 1st January 2021, the EU and UK customs authorities agreed that they would not request proof of origin for goods. This changed on 1st January 2022. All exporters and importers must be able to prove the original manufacturing country for the goods they are shipping. Furthermore, they will be able to retrospectively request proof for goods that were shipped during 2021. REX – Invoice Statements – Declaration of Origin: If you are importing goods into the UK from a country or bloc with whom we have a free trade agreement (FTA), your overseas supplier

will need to declare the goods originated in their country. Each FTA will have an official notification in the documentation. It could be a statement on the invoice, a Certificate of Origin, a preferential trade certificate, a supplier’s declaration, a trusted trader status (Registered Exporter (REX), Approved Exporter (AE) or Authorised Economic Operator (AEO)) or the goods originate in a GSP country. Whatever it is, you as the importer of record must show HMRC that you have done sufficient due diligence to prove the goods you are importing meet FTA preference rules. As this is a new chapter in our relationship with the EU, from 1st January 2022 all suppliers from Europe must have a REX authorisation. The REX registered number must be shown on their Commercial Invoice for the goods to enter the UK duty free. Any goods arriving at the UK customs border point without the REX authorisation number will have an import duty charge if the products’ commodity code carries duty. It is important that all businesses bring this to the attention of all their EU suppliers. It is very easy to get REX authorisation and it is free. UK companies exporting to the EU should continue to put the officially worded origin

declaration on their commercial invoices. For the rest of the world UK-EUR1 preferential trade certificates, Certificates of Origin, invoice statement declarations, long term supplier’s declarations or a trusted trader status (REX, AE, AEO) etc will be used to prove origin. Products of Animal Origin (POAO), Sanitary and Phytosanitary products: Sanitary products are for animal health, and certification is required to determine the health of the animals. A Phytosanitary certificate is for Plants and Fauna. These are referred to as SPS checks. POAO relates mainly to the food chain sector, however it also includes other industry sectors such as products from leather, gelatine, etc. From 1st January 2022, UK importers of Products of Animal Origin, animal by-products, high-risk food, and feed not of animal origin, must pre-notify UK import authorities of incoming consignments. Shipments coming from the EU or European Economic Area must pre-notify UK import authorities before the consignment is due to arrive in Great Britain. Exporting POAO from the EU to UK From 1st January 2022, an Export Health Certificate (EHC) will be required for exports of POAO from the EU into the UK. EU exporters must be registered on TRACES NT (TNT) to apply for an EHC. TRACES NT is the European Commission’s digital certification and management platform for all sanitary and phytosanitary requirements. Importing POAO into the UK

From 1st January 2022, UK importers must be registered with IPAFFS (Import of Products, Animals, Food, and Feed System) and are responsible for the import. They must have a UK address and are responsible for submitting the pre-notification of incoming consignments with the attached EHC via IPAFFS before the consignment is due to arrive. IPAFFS is a web-based service used to notify UK authorities of imports of live animals, their products, and germplasm.

Everything you need to know about buy-to-let mortgages We are fortunate to live and work in one of the UKs most beautiful locations. People want to live, work and holiday by our wonderful beaches. Couple this with the recent property price boom, and it’s understandable why the buyto-let market is as busy as it is; showing no sign of slowing. BTL mortgages are used on properties which are being bought to rent out to a tenant. The owner of the property becomes the landlord. Most BTL mortgages are interest only, with the capital debt being payable at the end of the mortgage. Owning a BTL might be the first time that you receive income that is not taxed at source. You will likely need to complete selfassessment tax returns every year. You can register for this through HMRC. You will need to keep records of income and expenditure. Some expenses will be deductible against income and/or CGT. Income tax arises on the net rents each year, at 20% for basic rate taxpayers and 40% for higher rate taxpayers. CGT is only relevant if the BTL is sold for a profit. Main residence relief will not exempt the gain from tax as this is a property you will not have lived in. The annual exemption will reduce the taxable gain, but the profit on sale will be taxed at 18% and or 28%, again depending on your rate status for the tax year of that disposal. Take advice on whether it’s best to hold your BTL in your own name, or in a company name which you own. There are tax advantages to using a company structure, but this will add a level of paperwork and annual compliance. If you’re looking to purchase a BTL, please get in touch. We offer a free initial appointment for all new clients. Jen Smith, Conveyancing Executive 01202 499255 | jsmith@frettens.co.uk www.frettens.co.uk

Global Rainbow hailed a ‘shining success’ as thousands share online Having lit up the night sky over Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch for three nights last month, the Global Rainbow has been hailed a ‘shining success’ for the BCP region. American artist Yvette Mattern’s renowned light art installation was hosted by Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, as a beacon of hope for the future and a signal of the venue’s resilience as it builds back from the dark days of the pandemic. “As an expression of optimism and a signal of the way forward, Global Rainbow was a shining success,” says Tim Colegate, Head of Programming at Lighthouse. “Thanks to funding from BCP Council with the support of the Garfield Weston Foundation and Poole BID, as well as sponsorship from HSBC UK, we have been able to host a dramatic and entirely

positive cultural experience that focusses on how the arts can give us all a lift. “And the community has responded in the most amazing and creative way, sharing photos and stories on social media in their thousands.” In the five days from the first test transmissions, Lighthouse reported its Facebook page likes had rocketed by more than 700% and views of its Facebook page were up by more than 500%, reaching well over 140,000 people. Global Rainbow made the news on BBC TV and radio, even attracting reports of ‘unexplained lights in the sky’ from the Isle of Wight and a competition to photograph the laser lights the furthest from Poole was won by a social media follower on the Isle of Wight. Global Rainbow is a large-scale public art light installation that beams seven rays of laser light to represent the colour spectrum of a natural rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet – and create a natural perspective horizon arc, like that of a rainbow. It has been seen previously in major cities including London, New York, Berlin, Tokyo and Toronto, and was hosted by Lighthouse as part of its autumn reopening programme helping to keep a spotlight on Poole. www.lighthousepoole.co.uk

Dorset Chamber unveiled an ambitious new ‘declaration of intent’ at its annual meeting to reflect business’ valuable role in society. Its new mission statement – Enabling better lives through business – comes as it continues to provide support for firms but also focus on the environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda. Chief executive Ian Girling announced the new vision at the end of the annual meeting at the Marsham Court Hotel, Bournemouth in December 2021. It was launched after president Caron Khan and vice-president Tony Brown were both re-elected for second terms in office. Ian said: “We want to recognise the incredibly important role business plays in society. “Business isn’t all about making big profits for shareholders, it’s not about exploiting people to make money or all about dividends.

“Business helps finance our health service, our welfare system and education. Business provides opportunities for people, it supports the charitable sector and provides opportunities for individuals to lead happy and fulfilled lives. “We have been thinking bigger than the usual mission statements and wanted our vision to reflect the critical role business plays in society and how we want to contribute.” The annual meeting heard how the chamber – the county’s voice of business – would continue to focus on mental health and wellbeing, including its trailblazing Got Your Six and Menopause in the workplace campaigns. It will also help businesses focus on ESG, including net zero and sustainability, and connect with more young people – including

new apprenticeship awards for 2022. Caron praised businesses for their perseverance, ambition, resilience and willingness to evolve in the face of the pandemic. She added that there was a great future to look forward to as ‘forward thinking, taboo smashing’ business leaders. The annual meeting was also told that Theresa Higgins had been promoted to chief operating officer and that Frankie Murphy had been appointed as the chamber’s new events co-ordinator. Dorset Chamber – the county’s leading business support organisation – has nearly 700 members. www.dorsetchamber.co.uk

Inspiring local GP toughs it out to raise over £3K for YMCA Bournemouth YMCA Bournemouth are extremely proud and grateful to work with local partners in our quest to help those in need locally. The ‘helping those less fortunate than ourselves’ story includes so many people working together, including the Health Bus, NHS Mental Health Support, YMCA and local Practitioners. YMCA Senior Operations Manager, Martin Stockley said, “Locally, and nationally, there are numerous organisations and charities that are simply focused on making a positive difference to people’s lives. We never forget however, that behind these groups there are inspiring and passionate individuals that really do make a difference. Thank you never seems enough, but each success and each live turned around is the reward we all celebrate and seek.” Russell Betts has worked as a GP partner in Bournemouth for 18 years and is a GP Trainer. One of his colleagues delivers a weekly clinic with the Health Bus in Bournemouth and is a local inspiration to Russell. Russell said, “He has a truly selfless manner and seems to genuinely thrive of the work he does with the homeless, coming back from a clinic full of enthusiasm and positive energy, it made me want to do more to help out in some way.” Russell has always enjoyed long distance events and during lock down in 2020 signed up for the Ultraman Triathlon distance event in

Castellon de la plana in Spain. He was the only British entrant among 21 other competitors. Russell continued, “It was a gruelling few days. Day one was a 10km swim and 140km cycle, day two 280km on the bike then a double Marathon on day three.” Russell was pleased with his result, completing it in 30 hours. “I really enjoyed the swim and bike ride; the scenery was beautiful and the weather good. The first marathon was OK but to be honest the last 20km of the 2nd marathon were really tough, my legs were screaming with every step

thinking of the sponsorship and those in difficulty every day of their lives, this helped inspire me to get through the dark moments.”. YMCA Bournemouth, Poole & Christchurch work tirelessly to help those who are also toughing it out and are so proud and thankful to have people like Russell help raise invaluable support. This is turn means that YMCA can deliver more services/programmes to those in need, ensuring that all can thrive for a lasting and positive future in our local communities. www.ymcabournemouth.org.uk

Car Review: ŠKODA ENYAQ iV June 2021 heralded the arrival of ŠKODA’s first fully electric car: the ENYAQ iV promised to be a fresh new take on technology, performance, and environmental responsibility. This large, practical, family-friendly SUV was an immediate success, and has already been named ‘Car of the Year’ by a whopping four different industry titles, including What Car?. It’s safe to say, then, that the ENYAQ iV has been met with a very positive response, so I was excited to review it. Let’s dive in! An electric future Firstly, some introductions. The ENYAQ iV is not just ŠKODA’s first bespoke electric car, but the battery is also integrated into the floor to give the occupants generous interior space and improved handling. The model launched with its ‘Purrs electric, grrrs attitude’ campaign, which sets out its stall as a car with two very different sides – an eco-conscious persona with dynamic design. It also marks the start of a new naming convention whereby its electric cars will begin with the letter E. Head-turning looks As the ‘grrrs attitude’ part of the campaign intends to prove, the ENYAQ iV shows that eco-friendly doesn’t mean compromising on looks. Far from it! I love the look of the ENYAQ iV – from its distinctively shaped bonnet to its confidence stance, it really makes an impression. All the range The ENYAQ iV is certainly a car that goes the distance – it’s available in the UK with two battery size options: 62kWh and 82kWh – with the latter delivering a WLTP driving range of up to 331 miles. In the real world, that’s about 260 miles, but it much depends on conditions and driving style. It can also be rapid-DCcharged to 80% in as little as 38 minutes.

Room for all the family If you’re looking for an electric car for you and your family, the ENYAQ iV is definitely a contender. It’s slightly smaller than its KODIAQ stablemate, but still boasts ample space and an impressive 585-litre boot. What’s more, you can create a loungelike feel in the cabin, with a choice of design packs – you could go for the luxurious ‘Suite’ design pack, which comes with decadent black leather and piano black décor panels, but the ‘Lounge’ pack gets the nod from me. The grey leather with mustard yellow stitching instantly makes you feel at home! The ENYAQ iV is also packed with handy features. It has all the tech and connectivity you need, with ŠKODA Connect and a handy 13-inch navigation screen. I’m a big fan of the Remote Air Conditioning feature – where you can schedule the air con at a specific time, so you’ll always head off in comfort. Perfect for these brisk winter mornings! Safety first The ENYAQ iV doesn’t do things by halves, and as well as achieving the maximum fivestar Euro NCAP safety rating, it also got the best result ever recorded, with 94%

for the protection of adult passengers and 89% for children. Can’t argue with that! Summary It’s safe to say that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this new model, and now I’ve had time to test it out, I can confirm it gets a firm thumbs up! I like all of the trims, but for that extra sportiness, the top-of-the-range ENYAQ iV 80x gets my vote – thanks to its two electric motors with a combined output of 195 kW and all-wheel drive, meaning no adventure is off limits. Sound like the car for you? Find out more and book a test drive to experience it for yourself. www.hendy.co.uk/skoda/new-cars/new-enyaq

Clever Software Group Celebrate Fifth Anniversary

Bespoke software development company Clever Software Group has recently celebrated their 5th birthday and most successful year to date. Based in Ringwood, Clever Software Group was founded in December 2016 by Company Director and self-taught software developer Andrew Matthews. With sixteen years’ experience already working in the software development industry, firstly as a computer programmer and then at the helm of a Bournemouth software company, Andrew set out to create a new business that crafts cleverly simple business software. Since starting as a team of two, the company is now proud to employ sixteen team of expert software specialists and has a valued client base in Dorset and across the UK in sectors from aviation and architecture to retail and public information services. Clever Software Group has experienced incredible growth year on year since its inception; in 2021 alone, the company doubled in size. Company Director Andrew comments: “I’m thrilled to have reached this milestone and in a short space of five years, we’ve achieved so much. We were proud to emerge from last year with our most successful year to date, which is absolute testament to how our team have embraced and conquered new challenges. It’s never been more vital to be forward thinking to keep our clients ahead of the curve.” Building long term software partnerships has always been a key focus of Clever 54

January 2022 | Dorset Business Focus

Software Group and the company are proud to still be working with their very first two clients as well as enabling a range of leading providers to drive positive change with bespoke business software. The custommade software projects are always exciting and varied, including everything from a Cloud based solution using IoT tech for the remote monitoring of assets, to the creation of full practice management systems. Andrew prides his team on technical excellence and extensive skill set. Clever Software Group’s team of expert software developers undertake meticulous research to understand client’s working practices and how they can use their technical expertise to create digital solutions. “Taking care of the difficult has been our motto for some time. I’ve always set out to create super smart software that solves business issues and creates greater efficiencies. We look after the technical aspect of developing a new business software system as well as guiding our clients through the process in a way that works for them. While we all have our own skill set, our team are united in loving the power of technology. Some of our greatest successes have been when we’ve been able to introduce real technical innovation into our client’s businesses to help them revolutionise the way they work.” /company/dorset-chamber/

As a self-taught software developer, it’s incredibly important to Andrew to offer opportunities to those with a flair and passion for coding. Andrew comments: “In 2018 we recruited our first Apprentices, one of whom is a significant part of our software development team today. I’m always interested to hear from budding programmers who have taught themselves to code; there’s nothing like it to really learn the art of problem solving. My first foray into computer programming came in the early 90s when computers were like gold dust and I was lucky enough at school to have a go on one of the BBC Micros, which were built by Acorn Computers for the BBC Computer Literacy Project. I’ll never forget that incredible feeling of seeing my code fix a broken tool. That fascination with the power of technology has stayed with me and grown ten-fold.” Three office moves, one rebrand and a pandemic later, the software company has come a long way. Looking forward into 2022, the team are excited to start work with some fantastic local brands and launch some pioneering projects. “We look forward to building on our software partnerships with our wonderful clients, working with new businesses in the local Dorset community and expanding our software team further.” www.cleversoftwaregroup.com
