MELBOURNE CITY ROMP COMES TO DOCKLANDS The Melbourne City Romp will bring its unique style of treasure hunt fun back to the streets of Melbourne on Sunday 25 March, 2012. As the flagship fundraising event of the Burnet Institute, the Melbourne City Romp is part puzzle, part treasure hunt and part ‘Amazing Race’ and is accessible to all. And, for the first time, the 2012 Romp will include various checkpoints across the Docklands! Eight in fact! Armed with a map, clue sheet and mobile phone, teams of 2-6 will attempt to solve challenges at checkpoints located across Melbourne and the Docklands. Teams face a range of challenges involving trivia, observation, mathematics, geography, history and physical endeavours. Checkpoints are a secret until Romp day, when teams use a clue sheet and team map to navigate their way to as many checkpoints as they can visit in a four-hour period. What we can reveal

to 3008Docklands readers is that one of the Docklands checkpoints involves a giant farm animal up a tree. Use this hint wisely! All money raised through fundraising activities goes directly to Burnet’s fight against The ‘Big Three’: HIV, TB and malaria, some of the world’s worst infectious diseases. So, get your colleagues or family together for a great day out! And, the best part, it’s all for a good cause. To register visit www.cityromp.com Registrations close March 16, 2012.

DOCKLANDS HOSTS 28TH MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL On Sunday 11 March Victoria Harbour will burst into life to the beating of drums, splashing of paddles and the excitement of a traditional Chinese Lion Dance as the 28th Melbourne International Dragon Boat Festival gets under way. This year is particularly auspicious being the “Year of the Dragon” and while the cycle of the Chinese calendar sees the return of such icons every 12 years, it was in 1952, 60 years ago that we last celebrated the “Year of the Water Dragon”. Since the late ‘80’s Victorian dragon boat teams have travelled the world to compete in an ever expanding sport. Confined to China for over 2000 years, Dragon boating spread from Hong Kong throughout South East Asia to Britain, Canada and then the USA took to this exciting, colourful sport. Today we find countries as diverse as Iran, Hungary, Turkey, and Sweden and

8

Trinidad-Tobago have joined the action. The Australian Auroras Dragon Boat team, with a strong contingent of Victorians won 1 gold medal and 15 other medals at the hotly contested 2011 World Championships in Tampa Bay, Florida. Kuala Lumpa, Malaysia hosted the first IDBF Breast Cancer and Cancer Survivors World Cup in 2011 where Victorian paddlers won 2 gold and 2 bronze medals. Yet another team of middle aged ladies lead by DBV Administrator Jenny Mayne OAM won three silver medals in open competition in Busan, South Korea, were acknowledged with an arch of paddles as they came off the water and were featured all over Korea on TV as “The Grandma Express”. The 2011 Australian Corporate Games featured over 1000 paddlers from companies across town competing in dragon boats at

Docklands. Victoria has recorded an increase of over 30% in paddlers in the last 12 months. Breast Cancer survivors are legendary the world over in dragon boating and our ladies find a renewed zest for life with this exciting sport. Prostate Cancer survivors are now coming on board only to discover they too can experience the same exhilarating lift to their spirits that prompts the ladies to say, “if I’d never had breast cancer, I wouldn’t be here having all this fun”. In April, Victoria Harbour Docklands will also host the Australian Dragon Boat Championships over 5 days from April 1 to April 5 and we expect to see up to 3000

athletes from all over Australia competing in this 5 day spectacular event hosted by Dragon Boats Victoria for the Australian Dragon Boat Federation. You too can be a part of the “fastest growing sport in the world”. Just check the website www.dragonboatsvictoria.com.au or make the call (0411 706 370) and DBV will be sure to assist you to get fit, lose weight and join us as we paddle the international dragon boat circuit around the globe.

SERRATA RECOGNISED AS ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S GREENEST RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS Paul Shaw, Head of Lend Lease’s Apartments business said it was a great achievement that reaffirms our commitment to creating safe, healthy and sustainable communities.

Victoria Harbour in Docklands is building on its green credentials with residential apartment project Serrata awarded one of Australia’s highest green ratings. The 15-level Serrata building received the rating from the Green Building Council from Australia. The Lend Lease and Sekisui House project is one of only three in Australia with a four-star green star multi unit residential v1 certified rating.

“Victoria Harbour is a precinct that boasts the highest concentration of green-star rated buildings in Australia. These include The Gauge office building, rated six stars, and Convesso, Australia’s most sustainable luxury residential tower with a fourstar green star rating. Its twin Concavo is also set to achieve the rating.” “Serrata confirms the credentials with a number of features that not only contribute positively to the environment, but reduce the operating costs for the purchaser,” said Mr Shaw.

Serrata, known for its bold design and creative urban edge is a joint venture with Japan’s largest home builder, Sekisui House. Toru Abe, President and Managing Director for Sekisui House Australia Pty Limited said the company believes strongly in the importance of sustainable communities and receiving the green rating was further acknowledgement of their efforts. Serrata’s key sustainability features include: • Installation of smart meters in all apartments which allow residents to monitor and manage their energy and water consumption in real time and historical figures, leading to the reduction in usage and costs. • Low-E glazing double glazed windows to reduce the use of heaters and air conditioners. The glazing rejects the heat in summer months and retains warmth in winter months. • Natural light and ventilation to the corridors which reduce the ongoing operating costs and provide fresh air and natural light to the corridors.

• A rain water tank for garden irrigation and toilet flushing. • Materials chosen with low volatile organic compounds and low formaldehyde resulting in improved indoor air quality by reducing irritations and increasing comfort. • A superior acoustic performance that reduces external and inter tenancy noise. • Bicycle storage for all dwellings as well as a secure visitor bike storage room with access to local cycle paths. The central location of Serrata allows residents to take advantage of public transport, local amenity and sustainable travel. Residents are in walking distance to Merchant Street shops including a full line supermarket, cafes and restaurants and the Collins Street tram provides direct access to the CBD and Southern Cross Station. Construction for Serrata commenced in October 2010 and more than 90 per cent of apartments are sold. Work on the project is due to finish in June this year. DOCKLANDS IN VIEW AT GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY TALKS IN MELBOURNE Melbourne hosts some of the world’s leading thinkers on sustainability during the C40 Workshop from 27 to 30 March. Many cities face the common challenges of population growth and climate unpredictability. Coming together to exchange ideas on how best to meet these challenges and adapt to climate change, city officials from many nations are a leading force for global action on climate change. The C40 Workshop held in Melbourne this month brings together experts to share ideas on how to create sustainable urban communities, exploring how

18

cities plan, design, build and maintain sustainable communities. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said that in an environment of climate change, a carbon tax debate and clean energy ideas, it was not always easy for people to connect with high-level proposals. ‘Five years ago, a handful of the world’s great cities came together to form the Climate Leadership Group, to share best practice around sustainability. Melbourne was among them. The group has now grown to more than 40 cities and is chaired by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg,’ the Lord Mayor said.

This March, the world’s leading sustainability experts meet in Melbourne, travelling from New York, San Francisco, Portland, Sao Paulo, London, Copenhagen, Johannesburg, Yokohama, Karachi, Dhaka, Lagos, Changwon and Sydney. As part of the four-day workshop, officials from these great cities turn their attention to Victoria Harbour in Docklands, working together to find the best way for developers to create a sustainable precinct. ‘The challenge is to create sustainable communities within our city. We need to explore localised energy sources,

harvesting stormwater, creating more green spaces and new ways of waste management,’ the Lord Mayor said. ‘Together, we will build a competitive and sustainable city with a prosperous economy that attracts and retains the best and brightest, propels economic growth even further and retains the qualities of Melbourne that we know and love.’ For more on the C40 Workshop visit melbourne.vic.gov.au and read about the C40 Climate Leadership Group visit http://live.c40cities.org

By Tom Elliott For many of us, the recent strength of the Aussie Dollar (A$) has been an absolute boon. Internet shoppers, overseas holiday makers and foreign car buyers have all seen their purchasing power increase as the local currency has risen well through parity with the US$. Given that economics is often referred to as the ‘dismal science’, however, it goes without saying that where there is a group of winners, there must be a corresponding cohort of

losers. In Australia’s case, the obvious losers from the A$’s rise are domestic tourism operators, education providers to offshore students and domestic manufacturers of global goods like cars and aluminium. Unfortunately for both car and smelter workers in Victoria, the recent news emanating from their sectors has not been good. While the prices of both foreign made vehicles and aluminium have been falling, the relative cost of making these products here has risen to the point where volumes are being cut and employees are losing their jobs. Strong unionisation of both workforces has led to please for more government assistance – but the question which must be asked is do such handouts really make sense for taxpayers? When the auto industry began here in the late 1940s, government assistance combined with tariffs were ostensibly used to help

the industry make a start in a competitive world. Over 60 years on, however, Australian consumers still seem unmoved by the sometimes dubious charms of locally made vehicles, with 17 out of every 20 cars sold here being manufactured overseas. Even more so than cars, aluminium is a truly global product that tends to be smelted where bauxite, the necessary raw material, is plentiful (tick for Australia) and electricity is cheap (which used to be the case in Victoria). Alcoa has only kept its two Victorian smelters running because the state government decided decades ago that subsidising cheap power was an appropriate price to pay for the creation of local jobs. Over the past few years, however, electricity here has become dramatically more expensive at the same time aluminium prices have sagged on global exchanges. Combine this with a stated commitment to return

the state budget to surplus, and all of a sudden the subsidies needed by Alcoa to keep open the Point Henry smelter near Geelong seem excessive.

FINANCE

CAN WE STILL AFFORD INDUSTRY SUBSIDIES?

All job losses are sad, as each represents the loss of financial hope for often struggling families. Having said this, across a large and diverse economy like Australia’s people lose their jobs all the time – and the majority find new ones. The rise of China as a economic powerhouse means we’ll always struggle to compete with the manufacture of both basic products like aluminium, and even complex ones like cars. No amount of government subsidies will change this inexorable equation. As a result, I think we must resist the siren-like call to preserve at all costs old assets like the Point Henry smelter. 3008 WELLBEING

THE FASTEST WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH By Nicole Hutcheson - Kinesiology Practitioner & Instructor As a Kinesiologist, I am always being asked for advice on ways to improve your health. My number one top tip would have to be- Drink More Water. One of the most common imbalances I see in my clinic every day is dehydration. Most of us simply are not drinking enough water. So how much is enough? The usual recommendation is 8 x 200ml glasses per day, but that is actually the absolute minimum we should be consuming. For optimal health and body function, you need to be drinking 1 litre, for every 23Kg of body weight. Our bodies are at least 60% water. It is the main component of all of our bodily fluids including blood, and it is involved in every function of our body. Put simply- if we don’t drink enough-

our body doesn’t work properly. We can live for about 3 weeks without food, but survive less than a week without water. One huge benefit of drinking your optimal water intake is weight loss. Not only because it often replaces high calorie drinks such as soft drink and juice, but it also fills you up so you eat less. Many of us mistake thirst for hunger and end up snacking during the day, when really, we are just thirsty. Adequate water will also increase your metabolism. Another benefit of drinking more water is how much it helps with our digestive system, which needs lots of water to work properly. You wouldn’t dream of using the same dinner plate for every meal you eat without washing it in between meals would you. However, when we don’t drink enough water to help break down and digest our food,

that is exactly what we are doing to our insides. Old food starts to build up in our body and it makes it harder and harder to get rid of. When we are dehydrated we feel tired, fatigued and weak. Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp, your mood balanced and your motivation flowing. Try increasing your water intake and see how much your energy levels improve. And of course, a common cause of headaches is lack of water, which is also used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body.

By Dr. Rohan Armstrong - Principal Osteopath As you read this, take a note of your posture… Are you slumped at your desk, spine rounded, shoulders drooping forward? Or are you sitting up straight, tall spine, trunk muscles activated, shoulders relaxed as your elbows rest by your side?

20

Whilst holding the posture, they completed a mock job application, listing their strengths and weaknesses relevant to the job. They then rated the degree to which they believed themselves to be a good candidate for the job. The researchers found that posture had a significant effect on these ratings, in that sitting slumped over was associated

The easiest way to increase your water intake is to carry a water bottle around with you, or keep one on your desk at work and just keep filling it up. Also make sure you keep track of how much you are drinking. You will find that a little perseverance will quickly turn into a very healthy habit.

CHANGE YOUR POSTURE, CHANGE YOUR MOOD How you are sitting may be influencing how you are feeling, and vice versa. Not just right now, but throughout the whole day. A recent study in the EJSP (Social Psychology) looked at how posture influences self-confidence. Participants were asked to hold one of two postures; slumped sitting, or sitting up straight.

with lower work related self-confidence as compared with sitting up straight. Another study found that posture is more important to a person’s sense of power and confidence that one’s actual title or position. These are two good examples of how the body can influence your mind, and a good reminder to check in with your body to know how you are feeling. For example; • The muscles in your face can shift your mood. Place a pen between your teeth engages the muscles of smiling which increases happiness & amusement. • Changing your breathing pattern to a slow, steady deeper breath through your nose,

whilst relaxing your belly, throat and face can also help reduce the effects of stress, cortisol levels, and leave you with a sense of calm and contentment. • Combine them; sit up straight, take a slow, deep breath in through your nose to fill your belly and smile. These are all good reasons for taking care of your body and paying attention to your habits of posture, facial expression, muscular tension and breathing. So the next time you’re feeling stressed or need a boost in confidence, consider changing your body to change your mind. As your mother always told you, sit up straight and smile! HEALTH’S SAKE

One of the biggest challenges when adding exercise into your life is wanting to do it. So why make it harder by doing something you hate. Choose exercises that you enjoy. Exercise that stimulates positive responses will help you to exercise. Exercise that you don’t like or even hate will drive you further away from exercise. It is always frustrating to hear people say they hate the gym and then wonder why they don’t go. Not exercising is costly for your health and shelling out for gym memberships is not good for your hip pocket. If you don’t like the gym don’t go to the gym.

There are plenty of exercise opportunities out there from walking clubs to sports teams to canoe clubs to coaches - put yourself in a position to be successful with your exercise. Choose exercise you enjoy and you will keep doing it. I give my clients one ‘free pass’. They get to choose one exercise that I will never put in their program. This gives them some control over the exercise we do and helps them to stop thinking exercise has to hurt, be boring or even horrible. Life is too short to not enjoy what you do.

Exercise is simply physical activity that increases the heart rate - that includes gardening, cleaning, taking the dog for a run or walk, playing with kids and even walking down the street. You do not have to run a marathon. Our bodies were not designed or today’s sedentary lifestyle and limited physical activity will eventually affect the quality of your life. Our bodies need to move.

Ask yourself these four simple questions: • Do I enjoy exercise when I am by myself or with others? • What environment do I enjoy exercising in? • How do I like to feel after I have exercised? • What physical activities do I like?

If you have been inactive for more than three months or have an existing medical conditions always check with your doctor before commencing an exercise program.

With your answers you can begin the journey to find the exercise you will enjoy whether it is indoors, outdoors, by yourself, with others, full pelt or just for fun and that will help you live a longer, happier and healthier life.

3008 - MAKEUP BAG MAKEOVER BY WENDY SCHMID With all the great products on the market, it’s easy to amass quite a beauty stash. When they’re kept too long, however, cosmetics can go from enhancing your clear complexion to compromising it with funky colours and smells -plus they can spread bacteria. “Over time, preservatives stop working efficiently and it’s possible for staph, fungus and yeast to contaminate makeup that’s been stored past its prime,” says dermatologist Francesca Fusco. So resolve to keep your get-glam arsenal well-edited and up-to-date this year. These are the key items to have in your beauty bag, says Global Creative Design Director Pat McGrath of Procter & Gamble: foundation, concealer, powder, bronzer or blusher, eye shadow, eyeliner, “bold” and “safety” lip colours, and mascara. Now use this cheat sheet to figure out when to throw away different beauty products. Begin the countdown when you first open the product.

FOUNDATION: Six months to eighteen months In a hot, humid climate, liquid or cream foundation can break down in as little as six months. “Ditch foundation if there is separation or if the liquid starts to get grainy or extra-thick,” says celebrity makeup artist Sue Devitt. Stored in a cool place (not under the lights of your medicine cabinet), liquid foundation can stay fresh for as long as a year. Powder-formula foundations will last an additional six months, as long as you wash the sponge applicator weekly. Tip: Smell your foundation when you buy it. “If the smell changes at all, throw it away,” advises celebrity makeup artist Joanna Schlip,

22

who has worked with Sandra Bullock and Sarah Jessica Parker. “It’s not worth holding on to the product and risking a breakout.”

CONCEALER: Six months to one year Powder and stick concealers last a year, but liquid formulas should be replaced in half that time. Again, watch for shifts in colour, consistency or scent.

PRESSED FACE POWDER: Up to two years Moisture or oil from your face can transfer back to the compact as you perfect your complexion, so prolong the life of face powder by cleaning your brush weekly with shampoo or a mild detergent, or replacing sponge or puff applicators when they become soiled from use. While pressed powders can last as long as two years, they should be discarded if a hard film forms on the surface of the powder before then, says Schlip.

you don’t pick up bacteria from the moist eye area and transfer it back to the shadow pot or compact.

LIQUID EYELINER: Three months to one year If your liner is drying out and you can no longer achieve a flirty cat-eye, you may need to say farewell at the three-month mark. However, liner can safely be used for a full year. “You’ll know it’s still good if it applies smoothly,” Schlip says.

EYE PENCILS: One to two years Luckily, your cache of colourful pencils can stick around a while. Most have a wax base, and bacteria can’t grow on wax, notes Devitt. Tip: Sharpen once a week to keep pencils fresh.

MASCARA: Three to six months

POWDER EYE SHADOW: Up to two years Like face powder, these can be kept for up to two years. Just be sure to practice clean-tool maintenance, says Fusco, so

LIPSTICK: Up to two years Those bold reds and deep berries you save for glamour nights will safely last for up to two years, as lipsticks generally contain wax in their base.

LIP GLOSS: One year Although, with frequent re-application, you’re likely to go through your favourite shades long before then! Wendy Schmid is a former beauty editor of Vogue. She writes for numerous magazines, including Vogue and Marie Claire.

As soon as the smell is off or the wand is nearly dry when you pull it out, it’s time for the

By Tahlia Mandie – Psychotherapist & Family Counsellor We all know someone who does too much. Maybe we all do a little too much. Saying ‘No’ is not always easy; in fact, it is often one of the hardest things to say. I, for one, get joy and exhilaration from helping others, challenging myself and taking on new responsibilities and roles. Saying ‘No’ sometimes feels like I am letting someone else down, maybe even myself. Is this just me? So, when was the last time you said ‘No’ to someone and turned an opportunity down? Taking on the world, extra work projects or extra volunteer roles may seem like the very best thing to do, but here is the thing, we all have a burn out button eventually. Taking on too much may in fact not be the best thing at all. It becomes time away from family, partner, children, friends, and what about you and your “me time”? Without sounding totally insensitive and under valuing the importance of helping and being there for others, being a little selfish sometimes is giving yourself

permission to focus on you and the other important things in your life. Ask yourself, what am I really doing this for? Is it worth sacrificing my other roles and commitments, joys and passions?

year out of college as they play at adulthood, fumbling their way through “the real world” of love, marriage, academicism and religion.

Jeffrey Eugenides had a tough task ahead of him with The Marriage Plot. After the brilliant success of the chilling, dreamlike The Virgin Suicides and the Pulitzer Prize-winning epic Middlesex, his long-anticipated follow-up was always either going to be received in one of two ways: rapturously praised as yet another work of genius, or dismissed as a complete disappointment.

First there’s Madeleine, the object of the other two’s affections. Dark-haired, beautiful and from a sheltered, well-off family in the suburbs of New Jersey, she is described within the first few pages as “incurably romantic.” She loves the Victorian novel and writes her honours thesis on “the marriage plot” in the works of her favourite authors like Jane Austen and Henry James. In a semiotics class, she meets and falls in love with Leonard, a brilliant and mesmerising science major who is shackled by the violent pulls of manic depression. Then there’s Mitchell, obsessed both with Madeleine and discovering some kind of meaning in religion, whose existential yearnings take him to Kolkata to volunteer (albeit briefly) with Mother Theresa.

The Marriage Plot takes on much simpler, more ordinary subject matter than his previous two novels. Set in the 1980s, the story centres around three Brown graduates- brilliant, well-read and entirely clueless about how to live. Starting on graduation day, the novel slips back a few years to fill in some of the blanks of their overlapping stories, then follows them through their first

The story is a simple love triangle at its heart, but it also plays at pulling apart ideas about love and marriage and all its complications. Eugenides is enquiring whether “the marriage plot” is still a meaningful literary form, when marriage hardly seems a satisfying goal for these characters with such wild, youthful aspirations. The idea of romance is explored in academic

SOMETIMES WE NEED TO SAY “NO”

terms -Madeleine becomes obsessed with Roland Barthes’s A Lover’s Discourse, which claims that humans would not experience romantic love unless we had read about it first, and her growing infatuation with Leonard becomes troublingly entangled with her intellectual ideas. The tragedy of The Marriage Plot is ostensibly Leonard’s struggles with mental illness, but another, quieter sadness permeates the novel - the way Madeleine’s life gradually diminishes behind the screen of Leonard’s needs. Though her character is introduced as the centre of the story, as the novel progresses she becomes almost wholly reactive, responding to the desires and actions of her two suitors. There are little flashes of her independence sparking up, but on the whole she has less of a “journey” than the other two, instead receding and becoming almost irrelevant by the end of the book. Without the heaviness and difficult topics that Eugenides tackles with such flair in his previous works, it’s very easy to dismiss this book as frivolous, but there are layers beneath the light and easy tone of The Marriage Plot that make this both an enjoyable and thought-provoking novel, and one that has more impact and relevance than you might at first imagine. 3008 WELLBEING

DOCKLANDS KARATE FOR KIDS As a lifelong practitioner of Shito-Ryu Karate, Sensei Rodney Mcleod believes in the mental and physical benefits of doing martial arts. And as a devoted martial artist, Rodney has just opened Melbourne Kids Karate in the Docklands. Rodney says, “Karate is a great opportunity for kids to get active and have fun. As well as building strength and fitness, Karate is fantastic for developing self esteem. Personally

speaking, It’s had a great positive effect on my life and I practice it every day.” Having learnt Karate for over 15 years and teaching for over 10 of those years, Rodney has seen many generations of students grow in both skill and character. “Without a doubt, Karate builds confidence and resilience. It’s really an amazing thing to see the effect it can have on a young person.” Though Karate remains his main style, he is open minded about learning other

forms of martial arts. In fact, Rodney is also a competitor in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and freestyle wrestling. Andrew Lai the local head instructor of Docklands Brazilian Jiu Jitsu speaks highly of Rodney and his teaching style, “Rodney’s a fantastic instructor - not only does he have great skills, he has a great attitude with the kids and they look up to him. I think Docklands is lucky to have someone so experienced teaching in the area.” For those who are interested in joining in, Melbourne Kids Karate will be running after school classes every Tuesday and Thursday at the Docklands Hub venue at 17 Waterview Walk, Docklands.

Further information is available at the Melbourne Kids Karate website at www.MelbourneKidsKarate.com.au or phone (03) 9016 8471.

Defence Force, all eyes will be on the sky when the F/A-18 and Roulettes buzz the crowd. The Australian Grand Prix attracts a bigger worldwide audience than any other local event and organisers are confident this year’s event is on track to break attendance records. Did you know? • The Albert Park circuit in Melbourne is 5.303 km long and the race runs clockwise around the track for 58 laps. • The drivers have to remove the steering wheel to get inside the car. A latch behind the steering wheel releases it from the column. • The length of time between the red light and the go signal is a pause of random duration so drivers cannot predict it. • F1 cars can go from 0 to 160 kph and back to 0 in just 4 seconds.

• Small planes can take off at slower speeds than F1 cars travel on the track. • A driver can slow his car down from 200 kph to almost a standstill in the space of just 80 metres • Sebastian Vettel, the 2010 drivers champion is the youngest ever drivers champion - aged 23 and 133 days.
