SENIOR RECRUITMENT SENIOR RECRUITMENT RECRUITMENT

THE PROGRAM This Department of Labor (DOL) Federal Grant assists low-income unemployed seniors with part-time training at a 501(c)3 non -profit such as the Magic Valley News.

THE STIPEND The DOL pays a stipend while training. These training wages are not to be used for income determination under federal housing and food stamp programs.

APRIL IN THE VALLEY

Aprilinthevalleybringsthejoyofspring time’snewgrowth.

Hagermanwasknownforvarietiesoffruit treesmostlyseeninthegardensofhomeowners. Inthespringwedelightedinseeingthefruittreebudsastheylaterbegan tobloom. Ourfriends,RayandGrace Clausenwerealwaysgladtoinviteour familytopickcherriesorpeachesorapricotsfromtheirbackyardfruittrees.

MysisterLoraandIlovedtakingturns climbingaladderbracedupagainstatree loadedwithpeaches,carefullyholdingour smallbuckets.Reachingtopluckaluscious peachandplacingitinthereusedplastic icecreambucketverygentlysothefruit wouldn’tbruise,thelittlehigher. We couldn’twaittogetourbucketsfilledso wecouldclimbdowntheladderandpartakeoftheperfectlyripeandjuicy peaches. Asthesweetnectardripped downourfaces,puredelightinthemomentisstilletchedinmymind.

Whenourfamilyhadabushelfulloffruit generouslysharedbyourkindfriends,off wewenthomereadyformymomtocan thepeachhalvesintoquartjars. Rowsof thesecolorfulsweettreatswerestoredup forthewintermonthsinourbasement fruitroomtoenjoyinthecoldmonths whenfreshfruitwasn’tavailablelocally.

TheClausen’swerewonderfulpeoplewho didn’thavechildrenoftheirown,butwere aprominentpresenceininfluencingyoung peoplearoundtown. Asregularchurch attendeesattheoldMethodistChurchon SalmonStreettheywerealwaysreadyto greetusyoungoneswithapatonthe headandawarmsmile. Ray,beingamilitaryveteranfromtheWorldWarIIdays andearliercampaigns,volunteeredfor yearsinthelocalboyscouttroopheldat theMethodistChurch,alongwithsomany othersincluding,WarrenBerry,MacBilliard,Mr.TitmusandMr.Edwardsand laterPatRussell.Thesewereamongthe menandwomenofthegreatestgenerationandon,faithfultoGod,countryand family. ManyEagleScoutswerehonored asaresultofthesemenshapingtheirlives overtheyears.

TheanticipationofEasterweekwasso exciting. LeadinguptoSunday,therewas aHagermanGradeSchoolEasteregg hunt. Irememberitbeingquitecivilizedas wedashedinthebigHagermanCityPark tofindourspeciallycoloredeggs,each holdingsomeformofwickerbasket. The schoolteacherswereamazinginthat dramaseemedtobekepttoaminimumin ourrushforthespecialchocolateeggs.

Ofcourse,onecan’tthinkofEasterwithoutrememberingthecertainfamilytraditions. MyMom,FlorenceMarySandywas raisedinafarmandranchfamilyandthen continuedinfarmlifewithherhusband, AlfredSandy,alwayshoninghernatural loveandskillofcooking.

Itsoundslikeacliche, buttomeshewasa spittingimageofthosehousewivespicturedontheoldblackandwhiteTVshow, “LeaveittoBeaver.” Shewouldoften wearadresscinchedatthewaste,donning anapronandmakingthemostelaborate mealsorbakedgoodsseemeasy. Oneof herfriendsaccusedherofhavinganoven inhercarasshejuggledmultipletasksof homemakingsuchascarpooling,volunteering,cleaningandcookingforourfamilyandhiredhandssoeffortlessly.
