Growing up in Hagerman
Valley P 4, 10, 19, 28 THE HAGERMAN VALLEY & HUNTING SEASON TheHagermanValleyandthefallturningof theleavesmarkedHuntingSeason.The farmerswerefinishedwithharvest.The haywascut,baled,andstacked.Thefield cornandsweetcornwerechopped,cut andhauledforprocessing.Theweather highlightedblueskieswiththeoccasional raincloudspatteringwaterhereandthere inthebriskaironthebrinkoffreezing. Familiesreadyforthechangeofpaceof sendingtheirchildrenofftoschoolasthey watchedthenewplaidskirtsandnonscuffedshoesscurrydownthefarmroads anxiouslycatchingtheschoolbuswith notebooks,pencils,anderasersinhand. Justasthekidshopedforsomenew adventuresandfriendshipsthefallwould bring,parentswerereadyforabreather andchangeofpace.
Mostofthemenduringthe50’sand60’s anticipatedhuntingseason.Itwasasortof ritualforthemtogathertheirtrustedband ofbrotherstoplanandorganizethebig hunt.Mydadwasnoexception.Aweekor twobeforethehuntthemengottogether totalkallthingshunting.Mymom, FlorenceMarySandy,understoodthatthis wasimportantforherhusband,Alfred Sandy.Alltheyearsofhisfallhunting adventuresweregladlysupported.Mom justknewthattheguysenjoyedplanning, connecting,andgoingonthehuntingtrip. Inthedays,menweretypicallythebread winnersworkingroundtheclocktomake surefoodwasonthetableandthefamily’s needswerecovered.Thehuntingtripwas theonetimesetasideforthemtoget togetherandhavesomefun“roughingit” withtheguysandtoputsomemeatinthe freezer!
Rainorshine,thesamegroupofhunting buddieswouldtackletheplansand preparationsforthebighunt.Dad’sgroup wasasfollows;DonSommers,whohada heartcondition,becamethedesignated cookandcamptender.PeteWoody,hailing fromuponthehillbeyondJusticeGrade,

Growing up in Hagerman Valley wasthetypicalcharacterandstoryteller, spinneroftalltaleswhichweremostly true!DocHefflywasadentistfromoutof statewhowasasteadyguywho appreciatedthechancetojointheIdaho bunch.MarionWalls,fromKimberly,wasa tall,croppedgrey-haired,military-style guy,whosewinsomesmileshowedoff dimpledcheeksandkindeyes.Don FredricksonfromGoodingwasaregular andagreathelpforanythingtheyneeded. Dadwasthatsteadyandcalmnatural leaderwhoseemedtomakethings happen.Asayounggirlonthefarm,I wouldquietlyobservethehappymood andfunDadexudedasthehuntingplans unfolded.Somehowthejoyhitmyheart andtheprideofwatchingthemanhoodof Dadandhisbuddiesonfulldisplay.This wasayearly“BigDeal”!Nodetailwasleft uncheckedaseachofthemenbroughta horseortwo,saddlesandblankets,bridles andpacksaddles,walledtentsandacamp stoveusedforcookingandheatingthe tentatnight.Theyalsohadsleepingbags linedwithwarmflannel,coffeepotsand crocksandironskilletsandaDutchoven ortwoandenoughfoodtofeedanarmy! Baconandeggs,sourdoughpancake starter,coffee,breadandbutter,oatmeal, stewmeatandcarrots,potatoesand powderedmilkwerecarefullypacked. Let’sjustsay,thesemendidn’tgohungry! Storiesthatlingeredandwereretoldyear afteryearwereetchedinthemindsofeach hunterthatbondedthegroupforalifetime astheyrelivedthetalesofthegreat outdooradventures.OnetimewhenDad wasoutonhishorseawayfromcamp scoutingforanelkordeer,hecameupon anentirefamilywhosecarhadbroken downonamountainroad.Theywerecold andhungryandhadalittle5-year-oldgirl withthem.Dadtoldthemheandhis friendswerehuntingandhadacampand warmfireabouthalfamileaway.He offeredtotakethelittlegirlintocampso shecouldgetwarmastheyfiguredout howtogetthehelpfortheirvehicle.They acceptedhisoffer.Theycouldtellthatdad wasatrustworthyman.Wrappedina warmwoolblanketthelittlegirlappeared incamponthehorsewithdadasthemen aroundthecampfirestarredin bewilderment.Mydadgotsuchakickout ofretellingofthisstoryandhowhekept theguysinsuspenseforatimeastohow thisgirlendedupridingwithhiminto camp.Thefamilywasreunitedand somehowgothelpwiththeirvehicleandall endedwellwithagreatstorytotell!
Anothertime,Don,thecamptender,had stayedbehindastheothermenwent huntingelk.Donhadjustfedsomegrainto afewofthehorses.Hewasstirringthe coals,gettingtheembersinthefiregoing, andbeginningtomakebreakfastwhenDon heardsomenoiseandlookedup.There wasabigbullelkeatinggrainamongstthe horses!Hequietlyracedtograbhisgun. Attemptingtostealthilypullhisriflefrom thescabbard,tohisdismay,Donsuddenly realizedhisgunwasfrozeninplace.His onechancetogettheprizedelkand contributetothehuntwaslost!Good timeswerehadbyallasherecountedthe missedopportunity!
