A DUAL MISSION This program has a dual mission - Community Service and Employment. Partners such as the Hagerman Valley Foundation, often need help but don’t have the hiring resources. The DOL pays a stipend to the seniors while they work for the nonprofit. This provides older workers with a chance to use their experience in community service.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM This Department of Labor federal grant program assists lowincome, unemployed people at least 55 years old with part-time employment with 501(c)3 non-profit organizations such as the Hagerman Valley Foundation.

The past 18 to 24 months have been a very busy time for us at Hagerman Fire/EMS. Like most emergency service agencies in the Magic Valley we have experienced all time high call volumes due to growth and the COVID pandemic. In 2021 we had a total call volume of 417 calls for service, our EMS Division “QRU” accounted for 303 of these calls.

HAGERMAN FIRE DISTRICT

The COVID pandemic has been hard on our community as well as our agency. Even with our personnel vaccinated, wearing masks, gloves, gowns, and eye protection there were very few of our EMS personnel that did not end up contracting COVID from incident related contact. We did have a couple of EMT’s that chose to retire due to their age and underlying medical conditions.

Commissioners last October, Fire Board Chairman Mark Bolduc bid us farewell after serving the department and community for 43 years. The Board appointed a new commissioner in January of this year, Ricky Fritz is now serving as our new Commissioner. Mike Henslee has taken the helm as Fire Board Chairman, Kirt Martin holds the other Commissioner seat. In May of 2020 we asked the community for support of a two year temporary levy of $125,000 per year. With the community’s support the levy passed. This has been the pivotal funding that our EMS Division “QRU” requires to be able to continue provide the level of service that our community requires. About $100,000 of the $125,000 is used to keep the EMS Division “QRU” operating.

By Tim Peterson, Fire Chief

With the approaching election coming in May we again are asking for your support to extend the temporary $125,000 per year levy for another two years.

With spring approaching we remind everyone to be cautious with controlled burning. Notify us of your burning operation, (208-837-4552) have water available, be proper distance from structures, be in attendance the entire time, have enough help to safely conduct the burn, fully extinguish when complete, and be finished by sundown. The forecast from the National Interagency Fire Center is for our drought conditions to continue again this fire Hopeseason.to

There have been some positive things for the community and our agency, in June of 2021 we were notified that our grant application to the State of Idaho Department of Commerce had been granted for the purchase of a new Type 1 Structure Engine and a new Type 4 Wildland Engine. This is a almost a $750,000 project, our matching funds for this project will be $260.000. The order for these engines was made in August of 2021, the down side is that the supply chain issues we are all seeing are effecting our delivery date on the apparatus. We are hoping to receive the Type 4 Wildland Engine by fall of 2022 and our Type 1 Structure Engine by the spring of 2023. We had a retirement from one of our Fire

Every time I drive through Hagerman at night time on Highway 30 I think that someone has turned out the lights. Main street or Highway 30 needs the attention of the City Council. They need to solve this problem.

We, the city, have been incredibly lucky no one has been killed, but some have been hit in the past. We have had more than one person hit going from bar to bar. Salmon street and Highway 30 has low output street lights. The one on the east side of Highway 30 on Salmon street has none.

Pete’s Patch:

At night at the busiest corner in town we desperately need to upgrade the lighting on Highway 30 throughout town. So it looks more inviting to stop and enjoy. If you feel like I do make your feelings heard and go to a Council Meeting and tell them how you feel. If you see a Council member talk to them - it’s their job.
