CINEMA under the STARS Locarno is a city of culture with a pulsating heart, the piazza Grande welcomes 8000 spectators under the huge screen, high as a building of 8 floors. For 11 days, expert and occasional filmgoers stay under the stars in a small city of Ticino on the shores of Lake Maggiore, the Film Festival starts at the beginning of August and this year it celebrates its 64th edition. Since 2010 the event is directed by the French Olivier Père. For the edition 2011 the major USA (Universal and Sony) are back together with important names of the art cinema, above all French. 20 feature films are competing, 14 in the competition of present filmgoers and 16 in the piazza Grande. Then: retrospective dedicated to Vincent Minelli with the projection “An American in Paris” in the piazza Grande, with the presence of the protagonist Leslie Caron. The Leopard of honor was assigned to Abel Ferrara. The prize for the best independent producer was given to Mike Medavoy. The prize for excellence Award Moet & Chandom was given to Isabelle Huppert and in Locarno 6 movies of the good French actress were projected. Also Maurice Pialat and Gerard Depardieu got two prizes and one prize for the career was given to Claudia Cardinale. The Festival
is more and more Swiss with a long list of productions in all the sessions: in the international contest three movies, among which the Gold Leopard “Abrir Puertas Y Ventanas” first feature film by the Argentinian Milagros Mumenthaleb, it is about the story of three young sisters after the death of their grandmother who grown them. The other two films of Swiss production were “Mangrove” by Julie Gilbert and Fréderic Choffat and “Vol Spécial” by Fernand Melaar. The President Marco Solari expressed his satisfaction for the event wishing that “the result of the edition 2011 of the Festival contributes to convince the population of Locarno that it has the potentials to become a center of excellence of the audiovisual sector”. The operative Director Marco Cacciamognaga showed the first positive figures of the budget. The artistic Director stressed the fact that the edition 2011 was marked by good art films, good international premiere and good event films the public enjoyed and he expressed his satisfaction regarding the success of public, press and experts. The organization is already working for the next edition of the Locarno Film Festival, held from 1st to 11th August 2012. 183
