MAGICAL BRIDGE PLAYGROUNDS
EXPLORING THE IMPORTANCE AND IMPACT WHEN YOU DESIGN FOR EVERYONE

THERE’S ONLY ONE MAGICAL BRIDGE
The global need for Magical Bridge has always been there.
Yet, it wasn’t until the birth of her second daughter that Magical Bridge Founder and CEO Olenka Villarreal began her worldwide search for a playground designed thoughtfully enough for both her daughters: Ava, who was born with disabilities, and her older sister, Emma. After discovering there was not a single “inclusive” or “accessible” playground created to truly delight members of a whole family, Olenka conducted research, mobilized volunteers, and raised private funds to introduce Palo Alto’s Magical Bridge, the very first multigenerational playground designed for all ages and abilities. Now over a decade since its opening, Magical Bridge is proud to be recognized as the world’s most inclusive and innovative playground, one that uniquely incorporates the needs of children, parents, and grandparents of varying abilities like no other.
ABOUT MAGICAL BRIDGE
Magical Bridge Foundation innovates multigenerational playgrounds, parks, and programs for more inclusive communities.
Drawing from nearly two decades of research-driven innovation, Magical Bridge removes the physical and social barriers of today’s typical playgrounds to give all ages and abilities a place to play, learn, and connect. With 11 awardwinning playgrounds currently open and many more in development around the world, Magical Bridge proudly collaborates with cities, developers, and landscape architects to bring innovative play experiences and companion programming to public parks, schools, neighborhoods, zoos, hospitals, museums, and more.
While playground companies are now finally responding to the growing need for inclusive play, there is only one playground design where inclusive means everyone: Magical Bridge. We look forward to bringing Magical Bridge to your community!
Magical Bridge invites you to join the movement toward a brighter future where “inclusive” means everyone.
THE IMPORTANCE OF MAGICAL BRIDGE
BEYOND INCLUSION, THERE’S MAGIC.

Public playgrounds are essential for communities to thrive. When designed intentionally for all ages and abilities, they provide vital opportunities for physical wellness, social cohesion, and emotional health for everyone in the community.
THE SERIOUS SIDE OF PLAY
PLAYGROUNDS ARE A COMMUNITY RESOURCE WORTH INVESTING IN
The critical need for social connection and time spent outside is mounting — and designing playgrounds for everyone is the perfect place to start.
The US Surgeon General reports that 84% of Americans do not feel attached to their local community1 , fueling an epidemic of loneliness and isolation across all age groups.
Extensive scientific findings from a variety of disciplines conclude that social connection is a significant predictor of longevity and better physical, cognitive, and mental health2; The lack of social connection increases risk of premature death by more than 60%.3 Worldwide, physical inactivity is endemic, affecting every age group, and is the underlying cause of 10.8% of premature mortality5 and $53.8 billion worldwide in healthcare costs.5
1 , 2, 3, 6 “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation: The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community” — Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murth, 2023
4 “Effect of Physical Inactivity on Major Non-communicable Diseases worldwide: An Analysis of Burden of Disease and Life Expectancy.” Lancet. 2012
5 “The Economic Burden of Physical Inactivity: A Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal.” British Journal of Sports Medicine. 2017
The first of the US Surgeon General’s
Six Pillars to Advance Social Connection6 recommends:
STRENGTHEN SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE
IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES: Connections are not just influenced by individual interactions, but by the physical elements of a community (parks, libraries, playgrounds) and the programs and policies in place. To strengthen social infrastructure, communities must design environments that promote connection, establish and scale community connection programs, and invest in institutions that bring people together.

A CASE FOR INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUNDS
DESIGNING FOR EVERYONE
Universal Design
(aka Inclusive Design): when products and environments are designed to be accessed, understood, and used to the greatest extent possible by all people, regardless of their age, size, ability, or disability.
“INCLUSIVE” MEANS EVERYONE
Playgrounds and parks are vital for community connections at every stage of life, yet most designs overlook the needs of the 1-in-4 living with physical, cognitive, or sensory disabilities, autism, the medically fragile, and our aging population.

INNOVATING FOR INCLUSION + ACCESSIBILITY
When we use innovation to design playgrounds for all ages and abilities, more people will visit, stay longer, and reap the many benefits of social connection and the physical and mental rewards of outdoor play.
2.5x more visitors*
Innovative playgrounds attract 2.5 times more visitors than traditional playgrounds.
3x more activity*
Innovative playgrounds generate 3 times more physical activity than traditional playgrounds.
2x more time*
People spend 2 times longer at innovative playgrounds than at a typical playgrounds.

Spectrum Disorder
Incorporating movement and sensory stimulation improves the symptoms of autism, resulting in:
• brighter mood
• fewer outbursts
• greater ability to concentrate
• better quality of sleep,
• more healthy food choices

DESIGN FOR ALL ABILITIES
25% One in four Americans are living with a disability, including the 1 in 31 children diagnosed with autism and our aging population with increasing physical challenges.1
The American Disabilities Act of 1980 (ADA) requires that public playgrounds provide limited access to those using wheelchairs. However, laws do not require that public playgrounds consider the full range of disabilities, such as those living with cognitive, social, or sensory challenges or physical disabilities.

10% An estimated 10% of playgrounds across the US are not designed for accessibility beyond ADA requirements.

A TYPICAL PLAYGROUND

SITE DESIGN PROBLEMS
1 LOOSE SURFACES
Not easily traversed for wheelchair users nor safe for those using oxygen tubes.
2 RAISED PLATFORMS
Not accessible for those with physical limitations, including Seniors and wheelchair users.
3 RAISED BORDERS
Not accessible for those using a wheelchair or mobility device and unsteady Seniors.
4 NO SHADE
Plastic structure caps do not provide meaningful shade for comfortable play and extended visits.
5 NO GATES OR PERIMETER FENCING
Children may run or wander off into busy streets or outside play area.
6 DENSE, DEFINED PATHWAYS
One way to play offers little play value or opportunity for exploration.
7 NO SPINNING OR SWINGING
No benefit from vestibular motion which improves balance, focus, etc.
8 SINGULAR CHALLENGE LEVEL
Activities do not consider less daring visitors or those with disabilities.
9 DULL EQUIPMENT AND NO GROUP PLAY
Ubiquitous structures do not inspire group or creative play.
10 NO RETREATS
Nowhere to take a break from the frenetic pace of play, especially important for those with autism..
DESIGN FOR ALL AGES
Despite perceptions that playgrounds are just for children, they are a public resource for all.1 And when designed for all ages, from tots to seniors, playgrounds can support the health of the whole family.
HEY, PARENTS! PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE AND PLAY!
Besides being fun, did you know swinging helps memory? Spinning helps calm the symptoms of ADHD? Sliding stimulates the vestibular system, which is responsible for balance and spatial awareness?
Studies have shown that children significantly enjoy playing with their parents, with positive impacts on their cognitive development, social skills, and emotional well-being, highlighting the importance of quality parent-child playtime for healthy child development. Research also indicates that the positive affect expressed by parents during play is linked to fewer behavioral issues in children.2

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS
ACTIVITY LEVELS Physical inactivity costs the U.S. $117 billion annually in healthcare (CDC). People with access to playgrounds are 3x more likely to be physically active, thereby reducing obesity and lowering healthcare costs. Magical Bridge measures success by the variety and frequency of movement activities (e.g., swinging, climbing, and spinning) and the overall health benefits observed, from improved physical fitness to reduced stress and anxiety. In fact, every $1 invested in parks and recreation saves $3 in healthcare costs (Trust for Public Land).
People spend 2x longer at a Magical Bridge Playground than at a typical playground.*
MENTAL WELL-BEING Magical Bridge incorporates spaces for relaxation, reflection, and creativity into the playground design. As such, we are encouraged by the mental and emotional health improvements of visitors, particularly for those with disabilities, caregivers, and multigenerational families.

ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Magical Bridge inspires community stewardship, working together to keep the space beautiful and welcoming for all.
LOCAL ECONOMIC BENEFITS Playgrounds have a measurable positive impact on the surrounding community including increased local foot traffic, patronage of nearby businesses, and the role the playground plays in supporting the revitalization of public spaces and neighborhoods. A single busy playground like Magical Bridge can contribute millions in annual economic value through property taxes, health savings, job growth, and tourism.
Proximity to parks and playgrounds can increase nearby property values by 8–20%. – NATIONAL RECREATION AND PARK ASSOCIATION

SUSTAINABILITY Magical Bridge designs playground spaces to remain viable and sustainable over time, both environmentally and financially. With quality equipment and materials throughout, vibrant yet low-maintenance landscapes, and custom features such as our tung-oil stained wood playhouses and bridges, Magical Bridge Playgrounds are a source of pride. Close civic and community partnerships, including a Kindness Ambassador volunteer program, ensure the playground remains active and well-maintained without overburdening local resources.

DESIGNING FOR LONGER STAYS
Ample Shade. Magical Bridge ensures large, mature trees are integrated into the playground design — and adds shade awnings as well as fast growing trees that provide additional natural shade over time.
Basic Needs. Playgrounds with restrooms see 44% more users and a 48% longer stay time. Ample parking and drop off points are a must.
Gathering Space. Each additional picnic table increases playground use by 9%, highlighting the importance of social infrastructure.

PROGRAMMING AND EDUCATIONAL VALUE
ACTIVATING THE PLAYGROUND WITH PROGRAMS AND EVENTS
Throughout the year, adult and teen volunteers offer activities, performances, and services as part of Magical Bridge’s Kindness Ambassador program or through partnerships with service clubs and Parks and Recreation departments. The programs, such as adaptive movement and inclusive storytimes, align with educational goals, promote hands-on learning, and stimulate curiosity among visitors of all ages.
In 2024, Magical Bridge hosted nearly 80 events across its Bay Area playgrounds.
STEM / INCLUSIVE DESIGN
As part of Magical Bridge’s mission, the foundation provides or supports learning opportunities related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), as well as fosters social-emotional skills through creative play and leadership volunteer programs. Magical Bridge’s KIND BY DESIGN™ activity booklet complements student field trips and guided visits to provide hands-on learning — on and off the playground. Utilizing design thinking principles, such as empathy and brainstorming, these programs help teach the importance and the impact of inclusive playgrounds.

PROXIMITY MATTERS:
THE CLOSER THE BETTER
Choosing where to build and invest in playgrounds is crucial to public health. Based on data collected by Journal of Urban Health in their “Playground Locations and Patterns of Use,” 2023 study, playgrounds should be within one half-mile of every resident for optimal benefit. Whether it sits in a large metropolitan area, a medium to small town, a residential housing development, or a public or private space that serves members of a community, as the adage says: location, location, location.
People living within 1/2 mile of a playground are 5x more likely to visit weekly than those living further away.
People walking to a playground are 6x more likely to visit weekly than those driving.
With our “hub and spoke” model, cities can introduce a larger destination Magical Bridge in a central location and smaller pocket playgrounds sprinkled through the surrounding schools and neighborhoods.

COMMUNITY INPUT AND ENGAGEMENT
Magical Bridge commits to creating playgrounds that authentically represents the community it serves. With multiple touch-points throughout the project timeline, our engagement process is designed to gather input from all community members, making sure their voices are heard, and to ensure the playground is truly reflective of the location’s diverse needs. We meets the community where they live, work, and play with a process that is designed to be fun, accessible, collaborative, and convenient.
Listening Sessions
Magical Bridge hosts community input meetings to encourage broad participation on the design and planning of the playground. These sessions provide a platform for the community to share their ideas about the design, programming, and art to make this playground their own. Community input surveys are also available in-person and online.
Inclusive
Outreach
Magical Bridge works closely with local organizations to reach families with children with disabilities, seniors, and low-income households, ensuring their voices are part of the planning process.
Project ambassadors—local volunteers and longtime supporters—help facilitate outreach and engagement.
Creative Collaboration
We collaborate with local artists, including students, to incorporate the community’s unique culture into the playground design. Residents help select the themes, colors, and artwork that reflect their values, history, and aspirations, ensuring the space feels deeply personal and reflective of the community.
Promoting the Playground
We invite neighbors into the conversation by distributing door hangers that provide a project overview and ways to share ideas and concerns.
Magical Bridge also provides a project web page, construction site signage, postcards, and newsletter updates to keep the community informed.

Targeted Conversations
We hold smaller meetings, including at schools and clubs, to educate and collect feedback on specific needs, such as accessible play, community health programs, or intergenerational activities. These discussions focus on ensuring the playground serves diverse needs while encouraging social interaction and community bonding for all.

Volunteer Recruitment
Magical Bridge works actively recruits Kindness Ambassador Volunteers to help activate playground programming including events, arts and crafts, and educational activities both on and off the playground. Volunteers can include local teens, seniors, and people with disabilities to give everyone a sense of belonging and purpose.
Community Celebrations
Groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies bring the community together in a most magical way. With opportunities to recognize key contributors to the project, the events include city and state government officials, the press, artists and performers, and Kindness Ambassador volunteers to celebrate together.

LET’S TALK ABOUT SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS
Every Child Deserves to Play
TYPICAL SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS
ARE NOT ENOUGH
Playground structures may look fun, yet even “inclusive” designs don’t serve all students. With high platforms, narrow pathways, and ladders, they overlook the 1 in 5 children with physical, cognitive, or sensory disabilities, autism, or social differences. They also lack swings and spinners — motions proven to reduce anxiety and improve focus — as well as spaces for open, creative play or retreat.
WITH MAGICAL BRIDGE,
EVERYONE BENEFITS FROM PLAY
Unlike any solution on the market, Magical Bridge removes the physical and social barriers of today’s playgrounds so every student can enjoy the physical and developmental benefits of recess — whether it’s spinning, swinging, sliding, creative or sensory play, or just having an engaging conversation with a friend. Magical Bridge ensures that every student returns to the classroom refreshed, focused, and ready to learn.

– AMANDA BOYCE, PRINCIPAL ADDISON SCHOOL, PALO ALTO, CA “
“Seeing the children playing on their new, magical playground brings such joy to my staff and to teachers. We love the innovative space so much.”

“When we offer cities matching funds from the county, others will step up. Cities, school districts, area businesses, local donors and philanthropies –we’re leveraging all of those funds to spread all-inclusive playgrounds like Magical Bridge throughout the county. My hope is that our county-wide effort inspires others not only in the region, but the state, and the nation to follow suit until one day, a truly inclusive playground becomes the norm and all will be as inclusive as the Magical Bridge. Magical Bridge is leading the way and serving as a national model.”
Our impact studies and continued research, collected and shared here, prove that cities investing in accessible, multigenerational play spaces experience measurable benefits in public health, economic vitality, and community cohesion. We invite city leaders, developers, landscape architects, and urban planners to collaborate with us as we bring truly inclusive play to more communities.

“Our family is honored to support Magical Bridge in creating a space where everyone feels seen and valued. In a world that can often feel divided, we believe in the importance of inclusive places that celebrate belonging and bring people of all abilities together. As Fred Rogers said, ‘You've made this day a special day, by just your being you. There's no person in the whole world like you, and I like you just the way you are.’ We’re proud to support this meaningful work and can’t wait to see more inclusive play spaces bring joy and unity to cities everywhere.” — Dave Chen
