Point of sale (also called as POS or checkout) is the place where a retail transaction is completed. It is the point at which a customer makes a payment to the merchant in exchange for goods or services.

At the point of sale the retailer would calculate the amount owed by the customer and provide options for the customer to make payment. The merchant will also normally issue a receipt for the transaction.

The application Barcode Scanner is an Android app, from the open source project ZXing (short for Zebra Crossing), that allows a user to scan 1D or 2-D "graphical barcodes" with the camera on their Android device. The program turns that scan into the original data that is represented by the barcode.

In this way the android based system works almost like a conventional Barcode Reader except that it is only composed of commodity hardware and this software application.
