Magdalene College Impact Report 2024-25

IMPACT REPORT

From the Master

One of the many features of Magdalene which makes me so proud of our College is the level of support we have from our alumni and friends, one of the highest for any College in Cambridge. This report shows the many ways in which that support has a wonderfully beneficial effect in College.

The most visible impact at the moment is the work on the Pepys Building. One of the most beautiful buildings in Cambridge, it dates back to the end of the 17th century and, since 1724, has housed the Pepys Library, one of the principal jewels in the

College’s crown. Restoration work on the building has been needed for some time and became possible only when the main College library moved into its new building. Thanks to the generosity of so many Members of the College, we will be able to complete this restoration work by the end of 2026 and ensure better facilities both for the library and the Academic Office, which will at last be fully accessible to everyone.

Less visible perhaps, but just as important, is the enhanced student support which the generosity of so many alumni has made possible. Donations have enabled us to operate one of the best bursary schemes in Cambridge, which now supports around 40% of our undergraduates with some form of financial assistance, and increased scholarship provision for postgraduates. We have also been able to increase our outreach programme to schools in the United Kingdom and our provision for student wellbeing.

The results are evident in many different ways. While applications from home students to the University as a whole dropped last year, home applications to Magdalene increased by more than 20%. Tripos results were again excellent with almost 30% of our students obtaining first class honours and 88% of the graduating cohort obtaining a first or upper second. Mathematics had a particularly good year with Magdalene students coming top of the University in both Part IA and Part IB. Our students also continued to excel in music, theatre and sport.

The whole College is deeply grateful to all of you who have given so generously to support the education we provide. I hope you will enjoy reading this report and seeing in greater detail the significant and lasting impact your generosity has made possible for our students and the wider College community.

From the Senior Bursar

COLLEGE FINANCES

The 2024–25 financial year has been one of both significant progress and ongoing challenge for the College. We have seen strong growth in our restricted and endowment funds, continued generosity from our Members, and steady performance in most income streams. At the same time, our core operational account has moved further into deficit, reflecting the reality of rising costs in a demanding economic environment.

The College has a relatively diversified income stream which is fortunate as it helps to protect the College if there are factors impacting a particular income source. It has been pleasing to see our continued improvement in conference

income after the pandemic. Revenue from tuition fees, research and Member catering has again been stable, although underlying expenditure is growing significantly due to the high cost of building maintenance and labour expenses. The cost of delivering College services remains high and whilst the intention is to maintain all services, we try to do so in an efficient manner whilst sustaining a growing income stream.

The College’s operational finances, as is seen more generally for all universities, continues to be difficult to manage. It is tough for us to grow income at a pace to match the cost increases, and in particular labour costs with government policy on employer National Insurance and National Minimum Wage taking effect. The College’s revenue (unrestricted) financial account is still in deficit, and it will remain, nevertheless, negative in the medium term.

Plans and preparations in readiness for the start of the works on the Pepys Building have been made and construction commenced on site in July 2025. The

College has managed the complete decanting of the building, with specialist plans implemented for the temporary relocation of the Pepys Library. New electrical infrastructure has been installed and is available for when the project requires. A tender exercise was completed and the main contractor appointed in May 2025.

COLLEGE INCOME

College revenue includes income from its long-term endowment, tuition fees, provision of residential accommodation to students, commercial conferences, and donations from Members. Total income reached £19.81 million, up from £15.05 million in 2023–24, a 31% increase.

This growth was driven by exceptional new endowment gifts totalling £4.71 million, compared with £0.23 million in the previous year, largely due to a substantial legacy supporting the teaching and research of law. Donations for capital projects amounted to £1.22 million,

providing significant support for the major initiative of the Pepys Building restoration. Steady increases in academic fees, together with income from accommodation, catering, and conferences, also contributed, with conference activity remaining strong following the pandemic. In addition, investment income of £4.14 million, although lower than the previous year, continued to play an important role in maintaining financial stability.

Philanthropic support remains central to our mission, with gifts directed towards fellowships, scholarships, student welfare, and heritage projects.

COLLEGE EXPENDITURE

College expenditure rose to £14.76 million (2023–24: £13.67 million). Key factors include increased investment in teaching, tutorial support, and student welfare, now totalling £6.46 million. Accommodation, catering, and conference costs were slightly lower despite higher activity levels, reflecting efficiency gains. The absence of last year’s £0.95 million USS pension scheme accounting credit made underlying cost growth more apparent, which in turn highlighted the deficit in the College’s general fund account. Continued inflationary pressures in wages and

construction also had a significant impact, with these pressures felt particularly strongly in Cambridge.

While the College recorded an overall increase in total income in revenues of £4.36 million (2023–24: £2.49 million), this was entirely due to the large legacy for law studies and donations for the Pepys Restoration Project. Below this overall position Unrestricted funds showed a £1.20 million deficit, highlighting the gap between core income and operational costs.

INVESTMENTS AND ENDOWMENT

The endowment (restricted and unrestricted permanent) grew to £78.64 million. Financial assets performed reasonably well within the high level of volatility in financial markets due to trade policy uncertainty, and whilst commercial property valuations improved, the strains of a collapse in business confidence has led to a weak and vulnerable commercial office sector. The College has vacant office suites which has led to overall a lowering of income and more expenditure relating to the voids. Investment capital losses of £0.68 million replaced last year’s £1.11 million gain, underscoring market volatility and a more uncertain macroeconomic environment.

The College’s long term financial position remains underpinned by a strong and diversified endowment, sustained donor engagement, and a broad income base.

However, the operational deficit in unrestricted funds remains a concern. Wage and construction cost inflation, along with rising taxes, will continue to challenge the balance between maintaining service quality and ensuring financial sustainability. The focus will

remain on growing recurring income, managing expenditure efficiently, and safeguarding liquidity.

We are deeply grateful to our Members and friends for their continued support. Your generosity enables us to invest in our people, preserve our heritage, and deliver excellence in education and research even in challenging times.

From the Development Director

We raised a fantastic £4.55 million in total this past year, helped by a hugely generous legacy from a wonderful Magdalene man who regarded his time here as transformational. His gift and those received from his fellow 1,131 donors are and will continue to make a very real difference to those who live and work in College.

Raising funds for our students is an ongoing annual objective, and thanks to your support, a marvellous £470,000 has been raised this year alone for both undergraduate and postgraduate student support. The continued remarkable generosity of our Members and Friends allows us to focus on our core mission of educating students to the very best of our ability. Your gifts help ensure that Magdalene continues to provide a

nurturing, safe environment with upgraded facilities, alongside a close-knit, scholarly community where our students can thrive and achieve their very best.

We have continued to receive generous support from Members and Friends, including a significant grant from The Wolfson Foundation for the Pepys Restoration Project. A total of £3.66 million has now been raised towards the total needed. Work is already underway, and visitors to College over the coming months will see the extensive scaffolding surrounding the building.

I do hope the facts and figures detailed in this publication clearly demonstrate your collective impact on everyday life, as we simply couldn’t provide for our students and staff or maintain the College estate in

the way we do without your donations. The lists of all our wonderful annual donors (unless they choose to remain anonymous), those whose exceptional lifetime giving has earned them membership of the Pepys Circle or the Master’s Guild, and Buckingham Society members who choose to make arrangements to benefit the College after they have gone, all of you make the College what it is today.

Every single gift we receive, however modest, makes such a difference and I do hope that you will take a great deal of pride in the collective achievement of the global Magdalene community detailed in these pages. Thank you.

Your Impact

The unwavering generosity of Magdalene Members ensures that the College remains steadfast in its commitment to need-blind admission.

By eliminating financial barriers, together we empower the brightest and best students to apply to Magdalene and Cambridge with confidence, regardless of their financial background.

Knowing that financial support and bursaries are available, students can fully immerse themselves in their studies, participate in extra-curricular activities, enjoy a May Ball, and, most importantly, feel like an integral part of the Cambridge and College community.

BURSARIES AT MAGDALENE

38 full undergraduate bursaries awarded

155 undergraduates have received financial support

Established in 2012, the Magdalene Bursary Scheme has supported hundreds of students, providing vital assistance in response to the tripling of university tuition fees for UK students. Delivered in partnership with the revised Cambridge Bursary Scheme (CBS2), the Magdalene Bursary offers guaranteed maintenance support ranging from £4,500 to £7,200 annually for those in receipt of a full bursary, and up to £4,500 for those receiving a partial bursary.

The bursaries we are able to provide with your help make a lasting difference to students’ lives. Many recipients tell us that this support allows them to focus fully on their studies, take part in College life without financial worries, and embrace opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. These bursaries ease financial pressures and enable students to make the most of academic and cultural life at Magdalene and across Cambridge. They exist thanks to the generosity of our alumni, helping every gifted student to thrive.

We invite alumni and supporters to contribute to the Magdalene Bursary Scheme. Your support not only alleviates financial pressure but also builds confidence, fuels ambition, and fosters a strong sense of belonging at Magdalene. THE IMPACT OF BURSARIES

The Tim Llewellyn Bursary has enabled me to focus on my final year and cover the cost of essential books for my history dissertation. It allowed me to explore my topic in depth with resources I could not have accessed otherwise. It also eased day-to-day financial pressures, giving me the chance to enjoy a full university experience.

The bursary opened doors to experiences that shaped my time at Cambridge. I was able to attend society events such as the India Society Ball, the Hindu Society Diwali Ball, and the Magdalene May Ball, which is such a defining part of student life. It also allowed me to focus on my swimming and fitness. More than this, it transformed my time here from one of worry into a true home. I feel deeply part of Magdalene and the wider University community, especially through social events connected to my faith and culture.

When I first arrived at Magdalene, I was anxious about fitting in and creating a place for myself. Walking into First Court, the first thing I noticed was the College motto, Garde ta foy. As a spiritual person, I felt an immediate connection to those words. At a time when I was nervous about leaving behind the comfort of the life I knew, discovering that the phrase means keep the faith resonated deeply. It reminded me that Magdalene was not demanding everything of me, only that I trust myself and the choices that had led me here. In many ways, the bursary echoed that same message, asking me to place my faith in Magdalene to ease my worries.

Thank you for believing in me and giving me the chance to achieve more than I thought possible. Looking ahead, I hope to make a positive difference in my community and pursue a career in politics, protecting human rights and providing vital legal support to those in need.

“The

update from Sanjana brought me great happiness. I admired her outlook and her enjoyment of every part of Magdalene life. Tim would have been delighted by both her academic achievements and her decision to attend the May Ball.”

Mrs Elizabeth Llewellyn, wife of the late Mr Tim Llewellyn OBE (1966)

STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Magdalene College’s Health and Wellbeing Service offers comprehensive support for students’ mental and physical health, helping them thrive both academically and personally. The Service provides Freshers’ check-ins, one-to-one consultations, health assessments, counselling, advice sessions, and creative and social activities, creating multiple ways for students to access support and maintain balance throughout the year.

In 2024/25, nearly a third of students engaged with the Service. Demand peaked in November, February, and May, reflecting the highpressure weeks of each term. Many students benefited from shared care, working with both the College Nurse and the Head of Student Health and Wellbeing to receive coordinated and holistic support.

Group activities remain a key part of the Service, supporting resilience, social connection, and relaxation. Weekly Tea-at-Three sessions provide an informal space for students to pause, socialise, and take a break from their studies, regularly attracting over 40 participants. Yoga classes continue to be popular, promoting

mindfulness, flexibility, and stress management. Creative workshops, including needle-felting, lino-printing, and mosaic-making, offer opportunities for self-expression and relaxation. In Lent Term, a communal crochet blanket project encouraged students to contribute squares, later assembled into a collective community piece.

During Easter Term, wellbeing initiatives were expanded to help students manage exam-related stress. Highlights included the Owl and Raptors event, which drew over 150 students and staff, Pet Therapy sessions, sunset walks, and welfare rounders. These activities provided social engagement, stress relief, and opportunities to step away from academic pressures.

Health promotion and preventative care remain central to the Service. In partnership with University of Cambridge Sports and Healthy Nudge, Magdalene offered 64 free health check sessions over eight days, covering key health metrics including cholesterol, blood glucose, body composition, and oxygen saturation. These sessions help students make informed decisions about fitness and lifestyle while raising awareness of preventative health measures. Looking ahead, paddle boarding will be introduced and plans for a Couch to Cambridge Half Marathon and a bike maintenance programme are in development.

In the coming year, the Health and Wellbeing Service will continue to provide physical and mental health appointments, group activities, and psychoeducation sessions covering topics such as alcohol reduction and women’s health awareness. Popular activities including Tea-at-Three, Yoga, and creative workshops will remain central to supporting our students’ overall wellbeing.

Magdalene’s Health and Wellbeing Service provides a welcoming, inclusive, and responsive support network, enabling students to manage challenges, strengthen resilience, and flourish throughout their College experience.

TELEPHONE CAMPAIGN 2025

Our annual Telephone Campaign is a key part of the College’s fundraising programme and we are incredibly grateful to all 1,129 of our Members across the globe who took the time to speak with our students and hear the latest news from Magdalene.

The focus of this year’s campaign was student support. Of our team of twelve student callers, five were recipients of financial support funded by alumni. They were able to share first-hand the significant impact this support has had on their time at and experience of Magdalene. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, we can continue to provide the necessary support to all students, ensuring the brightest and most talented can study and thrive at Magdalene.

Other donors chose to support different areas of College life, including student welfare and mental health, and the current restoration of our unique, Grade I Listed Pepys Building. We are delighted that 240 of our Members chose to make a donation as part of the 2025 Telephone Campaign, raising a total just short of £194,000. Every donation makes a real difference, helping to make Magdalene accessible to the brightest minds, enhance the College environment, and provide the best opportunities for all. Thank you for taking the time to engage with our students and for your generosity; we are extremely grateful.

256 Year 12 students entered the Armstrong Arts and Humanities Essay Competition. Magdalene Fellows Dr Simon Ravenscroft (2018), Professor Silke Mentchen (2005), Dr Michelle Taylor (2024), and Mr Alistair Mills (2006), set a series of questions covering the wide range of arts and humanities subjects at Cambridge.

First Prize went to Miss Lydia Davenport of Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, Cheshire, for her essay on the question: If no one is truly responsible for their actions, then there is no justification for punishing people?

The winners and their guests were welcomed to a prize-giving ceremony hosted by the Master.

VISITS TO MAGDALENE

We regularly welcome school groups to Magdalene, where students learn about the university application process, experience the academic environment, and meet current Magdalene Student Ambassadors. Over the past year, we hosted

942 students from 43 schools for visit days at the College and partnered with The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme and the Cambridge Physics Experience to give as many students as possible the chance to experience Cambridge.

In July 2025, Magdalene was a popular destination during the University Open Days, with more than 4,000 prospective applicants visiting over two days. Visitors met Admissions Tutors, Directors of Studies, and Student Ambassadors to gain insight into undergraduate study at Magdalene.

STEM SMART

Each August, Magdalene hosts 18 STEM SMART students for a four-day residential. The STEM SMART initiative provides subject-specific support for talented Year 12 state school students through online learning, weekly tutorials, and residentials in Cambridge. During their visit, students attended academic sessions at the Cavendish Laboratory, taking part in problem-solving activities across Maths, Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering. Your Legacy, Our Future

The College has been fortunate to receive bequests from Members for centuries. Our legacy society, the Buckingham Society, is named in honour of Henry Stafford, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, a past benefactor who chose to leave a gift in his will to Magdalene.

Legacy gifts, whatever their size, make a lasting difference to the College and to the lives of our students. We are deeply grateful to Members who decide to leave a bequest in support of Magdalene. Each gift reflects personal reasons, relationships, and connections with the College, and we value the affection shown through this meaningful gesture.

Since the earliest days of Magdalene (and our predecessor, Buckingham College), the generosity of legacies has helped to shape the College. In recent years, bequests from alumni have provided substantial funding for the building of the New Library, the endowment of the Head of Student Health and Wellbeing, and the restoration of the Pepys Building.

Allocation of Legacy Donations Received by the College (2005–2025)

Total: £5.26m

General Purposes: £2.31m

Buildings: £2.08m

Student Support: £0.62m

Teaching: £0.25m

We are humbled that so many Members choose to include Magdalene in their wills. All those who support the College in this way are invited to join the Buckingham Society, which recognises this special commitment. The Master hosts a biennial luncheon for Society members in early June.

For more information about planned giving or to discuss your gift in confidence, please contact us at +44 (0)1223 764410 or email development.director@magd.cam.ac.uk.
